Teaching Intercultural Communication In A Professional Language Course, Michael Hager Dec 2010

Teaching Intercultural Communication In A Professional Language Course, Michael Hager

Global Business Languages

In the following article, we will discuss culture instruction and the necessity to include information about the native culture. Culture instruction can also include stereotypes in order to permit students to confront their own use of stereotypes. Then we discuss background information about culture, including self-construal, the distinction between independent and interdependent cultures, and paradigm shifting. This background information provides the basis for demonstrating how culture can be taught in a business German course by using, for example, marketing and culture assimilators.

Behind The Technology: Ct Perfusion In The Setting Of Acute Stroke Management, Benjamin Zussman, Adam Flanders, Robert H. Rosenwasser Md, Pascal Jabbour Md

JHN Journal

Computed Tomography Perfusion (CTP) is an imaging modality that generates parametric maps of cerebral hemodynamics which are useful in the assessment of suspected acute ischemic stoke. However, the technology underlying CTP is complex and serious controversy surrounds the safety of CTP tests and the reproducibility and validity of CTP results. This report briefly outlines the history of CTP, its current clinical applications for stroke management, the main controversies surrounding CTP, and future directions for this technology.

Dural Arteriovenous Malformations: A Review Of The Literature And A Presentation Of The Jhn Series, Ed Marchan, Stavropoula Tjoumakaris, Robert H. Rosenwasser Md, L. Fernando Gonzalez, Ciro Randazzo Md, Pascal Jabbour Md

JHN Journal

Dural arteriovenous malformations (DAVMs), also known as dural arteriovenous fistulas, are arteriovenous shunts from a dural arterial supply to a dural venous channel, typically supplied by pachymeningeal arteries and located near a major venous sinus.1 The etiology of these lesions is not fully understood. DAVMs in the pediatric population are associated with structural venous abnormalities ,2 but the majority of DAVMs are thought to be acquired. Different etiologies have been implicated in this phenomenon, namely: sinus thrombosis, trauma or surgery.2–6

Generalized Quantifiers In Distributed Databases., Michael Dobbs Dec 2010

Generalized Quantifiers In Distributed Databases., Michael Dobbs

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Optimizing queries in a distributed database is quite difficult. This work proposes defining new generalized quantifiers which operate on sets rather than tuples. These quantifiers would allow for easier optimization in a horizontally distributed database. These operators are scalable with respect to both the number of hosts in the environment and the size of the data used.

Implementation Of A Microsoft Windows Embedded Standard System., Kristopher L. Kumler Dec 2010

Implementation Of A Microsoft Windows Embedded Standard System., Kristopher L. Kumler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many dedicated-use computer systems sold as complete products require a turn-key design delivered to the customer. This requires a system which is stable, secure, and serviceable. Adaptability of the system to existing software applications is a key consideration for many vendors. This thesis attempts to establish and gather best practices for designing, configuring, and building a Microsoft Windows Embedded Standard 2009 system. An existing real-world system will be used as a case study and example implementation. The end result will be a relatively compact, secure, and efficient Microsoft Windows Operating System image to support the target software application.

Dynamic Probe Positioning Within Peer-To-Peer Networks For Mining Contraband File Exchanges., Derek Reese Dec 2010

Dynamic Probe Positioning Within Peer-To-Peer Networks For Mining Contraband File Exchanges., Derek Reese

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Peer-to-peer networks have been growing in popularity over the past decade. There have been many new innovations that greatly improve access to a wide variety of content. This expanded capability combined with a strong sense of anonymity has given rise to increased proliferation of illicit content. In particular the increase in child pornography has been a growing concern in the United States and other countries. Thus law enforcement is motivated to find improved means for finding those sharing this material online. Due to the dynamic and expansive nature of peer-to-peer networks, there is a need to develop methods that allow …

The Phenomenology Of The Bachelor Of Science In Hvac Engineering Technology From Ferris State University, Michael Feutz Dec 2010

The Phenomenology Of The Bachelor Of Science In Hvac Engineering Technology From Ferris State University, Michael Feutz

Dissertations

Career and Technical Education (CTE) has evolved from industry-specific training to a more broad-based education that incorporates core academic learning objectives and prepares the student for work (Rothwell & Gerity, 2008; Uloa, 2006; Reese, 2002; Rojewski, 2002; Stone, 2002; Schmidli, 2001). Little is known about how well individual programs align with the industry for which graduates are prepared, (Zinser, 2003) or what CTE has meant to its graduates.

This research focused on graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Engineering Technology (HVAC-ET) at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan. A phenomenological design was used …

Blanchot And Ambiguity, Paolo Bartoloni Dec 2010

Blanchot And Ambiguity, Paolo Bartoloni

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Blanchot and Ambiguity" Paolo Bartoloni investigates the enigmatic and ambiguous turn of the famous Blanchotian statement "existence without Being." The intention of the article is to locate Blanchot's remark in the context of a discussion on history and its possible end, famously initiated by Alexandre Kojève in a lecture on 4 December 1937 at the College of Sociology in Paris; and provide insights into the difference that distinguishes Kojève's reflection on the end of history, Bataille's subsequent interpretation of it, and Blanchot's original conceptualization of a state of being suspended between nature and culture, history and the …

Ambiguity Now, Martin Harrison Dec 2010

Ambiguity Now, Martin Harrison

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Ambiguity Now" Martin Harrison focuses on the pivotal place which modernist critical theory ascribed to ambiguity in the definition of meaning and structure in poetry. In particular, Harrison considers the way in which the category of experience is deployed in the discourse of ambiguity but is limited to only certain narratives of so-called experience. Harrison argues for a contemporary practice less focused on ambiguity and more on notation and provisional structure, demonstrating key elements of such practice in the work of modern poets Leslie Scalapino and Frank Bidart and the poet-artist Alex Selenitsch.
