Electroless Deposition Of Plasmonic Nanostructures On Star Polymer Templates, Melia Tjio
Electroless Deposition Of Plasmonic Nanostructures On Star Polymer Templates, Melia Tjio
Master's Theses
As an alternative technique, electroless deposition is gaining interest due to its simplicity (solution-based process, no complex instrumentation), economical aspect, and effectiveness to form certain desired film thicknesses and morphologies on a wide variety of substrates. This work describes the use of water-soluble, polyvalent star polymer templates to form spontaneous self-limiting monolayers on complimentary functionalized substrates that act as efficient adhesion layers for the electroless deposition of thin gold films. The resulting gold films display outstanding thickness control, uniformity, reproducibility, and plasmon resonance generation, as evaluated by Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS), surface plasmon resonance (SPR) spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Some bioactive organotin(IV) derivatives of 3,4-dichlorophenylacetic acid (HL) were synthesized by reacting the ligand acid with various di- or tri-organotin compounds (in suitable mole ratios) in the presence of triethylamine. The structural investigation was carried out via multinuclear (^1H, ^{13}C, and ^{119}Sn) NMR, IR spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography. The crystal structure of 4 comprises a central Sn_2O_2 core with O atoms bonded to 2 dibutylbis(3,4-dichlorophenylacetato)tin(IV) units. All the Sn atoms of 4 are essentially 5-coordinated in distorted trigonal-bipyramidal geometry. Some of the compounds exhibited significant antibacterial and antifungal activity.

Genomic sequencing projects are an abundant source of information for biological studies ranging from the molecular to the ecological in scale; however, much of the information present may yet be hidden from casual analysis. One such information domain, trends in codon usage, can provide a wealth of information about an organism's genes and their expression. Degeneracy in the genetic code allows more than one triplet codon to code for the same amino acid, and usage of these codons is often biased such that one or more of these synonymous codons is preferred. Detection of this bias is an important tool …
Autonomous Evolution Of Topographic Regularities In Artificial Neural Networks, Jason Gauci, Kenneth O. Stanley
Autonomous Evolution Of Topographic Regularities In Artificial Neural Networks, Jason Gauci, Kenneth O. Stanley
Faculty Bibliography 2010s
Looking to nature as inspiration, for at least the past 25 years, researchers in the field of neuroevolution (NE) have developed evolutionary algorithms designed specifically to evolve artificial neural networks (ANNs). Yet the ANNs evolved through NE algorithms lack the distinctive characteristics of biological brains, perhaps explaining why NE is not yet a main-stream subject of neural computation. Motivated by this gap, this letter shows that when geometry is introduced to evolved ANNs through the hypercube-based neuroevolution of augmenting topologies algorithm, they begin to acquire characteristics that indeed are reminiscent of biological brains. That is, if the neurons in evolved …

Density Based Pruning For Identification Of Differentially Expressed Genes From Microarray Data, Jianjun Hu, J. Xu
Density Based Pruning For Identification Of Differentially Expressed Genes From Microarray Data, Jianjun Hu, J. Xu
Faculty Publications
Motivation
Identification of differentially expressed genes from microarray datasets is one of the most important analyses for microarray data mining. Popular algorithms such as statistical t-test rank genes based on a single statistics. The false positive rate of these methods can be improved by considering other features of differentially expressed genes.
Results
We proposed a pattern recognition strategy for identifying differentially expressed genes. Genes are mapped to a two dimension feature space composed of average difference of gene expression and average expression levels. A density based pruning algorithm (DB Pruning) is developed to screen out potential differentially expressed genes usually …

Lipid Bilayer-Nanoparticle Interactions In Nanotoxicology And Nanomedicine, Yanjing Chen
Open Access Dissertations
Nanoparticle (NP) interactions that may destabilize cell membranes and cause toxicity can also be used to design and control therapeutic assemblies. Fundamentally examining interactions between NPs and cell membranes is crucial to understanding NP toxicity mechanisms and the development of safe and non-toxic NP-based commercial and therapeutic applications. In this dissertation it is demonstrated that self-assembled lipid bilayers can be employed as model membranes to determine NP interact ions. First, protocols were developed for examining hydrophobic and hydrophilic NP-bilayer interactions using lipid bilayer vesicles or liposomes. Second, interactions between liposomes and NPs were characterized by examining changes in liposome structure, …

The extracellular matrix (ECM) is an essential requirement for maintaining permanent shape and rigidity in multicellular organisms. The ECM serves two main functions: scaffolding and signaling. Insoluble collagen and soluble proteoglycans, glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), and glycoproteins allow for water retention and flexibility. The signaling role of the ECM is essential for a multitude of events including vascular development and angiogenesis. Via interactions with vascular endothelial cells, proteins of the ECM can induce or repress angiogenesis.

Caged Morpholino Oligonucleotide For Control Of Gene Expression In Zebrafish, Chad Michael Jarreau
LSU Master's Theses
To control gene expression in vivo with spatial and temporal precision remains a significant hurdle in laboratory studies of development as well as clinical genetic therapies. Here we demonstrate such control over gene expression by use of photochemistry to reversibly inactivate the hybridization of a nucleic acid analog used for specific protein knockdown. A morpholino oligonucleotide, commonly used for knockdown of protein expression in developmental studies, was “caged” using carbodiimide conjugate chemistry which yielded photocleavable adducts that can be removed with light exposure. Photochemical inactivation approaches to produce caged molecules have been used to control the spatiotemporal activity of biomolecules …

Atherosclerosis is the leading cause of mortality in developed countries accounting for 50% of all deaths. Atherosclerosis develops when macrophages in the artery wall accumulate large amounts of cholesterol via uptake of oxidized low density lipoproteins (LDL), causing a negative effect on cholesterol metabolism. Thus, the development of atherosclerosis can be inhibited by increasing cholesterol efflux, which can be achieved by activating ATP binding cassette (ABC) transporters in macrophages. In particular, ABCA1 mediates reverse cholesterol transport to the liver via high density lipoproteins (HDL) and therefore is an attractive molecular target for raising HDL levels and protecting against atherosclerosis. ABCA1 …

Platinum group metals (PGMs) have been shown to accumulate in various tissues of organisms but their toxicity is not well-known. Raman spectroscopy is a powerful analytical technique that enables direct and non-destructive chemical characterization of bone tissues. PGMs were injected into chick embryos in the following concentrations: 0.1, 1.0, 5.0, or 10.0 ppm solutions of Pt(IV), Rh(III), Pd(II) or PGMs mixtures (0.1 ppm or 1.0 ppm of each metal). The micro-Raman maps recorded on the paraffin embedded tibiotarsus cross-sections showed significant changes in the chemical composition and structure of the bone tissue as a result …

An object may be identified by its properties which may comprise both continuous data values and categorical data values. Sometimes a particular property (categorical) value may select a group of objects which have similarity in their attributes (continuous). This feature is observed in gene data sets as well as other multivariate data sets. This paper presents a tool to identify patterns formed by data subsets based upon some categorical attributes. The tool reads data from various data sources, filters data according to supplied criteria and shows them as a Parallel Coordinates graph which a user can manipulate to find the …

We have developed a coupled 3‐D pan‐Arctic biology/sea ice/ocean model to investigate the impact of declining Arctic sea ice on the marine planktonic ecosystem over 1988–2007. The biophysical model results agree with satellite observations of a generally downward trend in summer sea ice extent during 1988–2007, resulting in an increase in the simulated photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) at the ocean surface and marine primary productivity (PP) in the upper 100 m over open water areas of the Arctic Ocean. The simulated Arctic sea ice thickness has decreased steadily during 1988–2007, leading to an increase in PAR and PP in sea …

fac-[ReI(CO)3L]n complexes serve as models for short-lived fac-[99mTcI(CO)3L] imaging tracers. Dangling groups on L, needed to achieve desirable biodistribution, complicate the NMR spectra, which are not readily understood. In fac-[ReI(CO)3L]+ with less complicated L, NH groups (exo-NH) projecting toward the L face sometimes showed an upfield shift attributable to steric shielding of the exo-NH group from the solvent by the chelate rings. To investigate whether exo-NH groups in six-membered rings exhibit the same effect and whether the …

Discovery And Visualization Of Co-Regulated Genes Relevant To Target Diseases, Vaibhan. Lad
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
In this thesis, we propose to discover co-regulated genes using microarray expression data, as well as providing visualization functionalities for domain experts to study relationships among discovered co-regulated genes. To discover co-regulated genes, we first use existing gene selection methods to select a small portion of genes which are relevant to the target diseases, on which we build an ordered similarity matrix by using nearest neighbor based similarity assessment criteria. We then apply a threshold based clustering algorithm named Spectral Clustering to the matrix to obtain a number of clusters. The genes which are clustered together in one cluster represent …

The article focuses on the historical ecology of the Pacific herring, a marine food web resource, in the Gulf of Alaska. It states the hearing conducted by the Alaska Legislature's House special committee on fisheries on the status and management of herring in Southeast Alaska during which Tlingit fisherman Clarence Jackson of Kake notes the disappearance of herring in his lifetime. Information on herring ecology based from Native and non-Native individuals from Southeast communities and archaeological site reports reveal that non-Natives in Southeast Alaska have exploited herring with the development of a herring reduction plant. It underscores the need for …

The Role Of The Ca2+-Dependent Protein Kinase, Camk-Ii, In Heart And Kidney Development In The Zebrafish, Danio Rerio, Sarah Rothschild
Theses and Dissertations
Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase type II (CaMK-II) is a multifunctional serine/threonine kinase that is ubiquitously expressed throughout the lifespan of metazoans. Mammals encode four genes (α, β, γ, δ) that generate over forty splice-variants. CaMK-II is important in a myriad of functions, including ion channel regulation, cell-cycle progression, and long term potentiation. In adults, alterations in activation of CaMK-II induce cardiac arrhythmias and heart failure. Developmental roles for CaMK-II are not as well understood since mouse knockouts are embryonic lethal. Therefore the identification of other vertebrate CaMK-II genes will add to our understanding of development. Zebrafish encode seven catalytically active CaMK-II …

Automated Interpretation Of The Tandem Mass Spectra Of Peptides Using Artificial Neural Networks, Timothy Patrick Manning
Theses
The manual interpretation of mass spectra is a complex and time consuming task. The problem of manually interpreting this data is further exacerbated by the large numbers of mass spectra which can potentially be produced in a single proteoniics experiment. This shows the need for high throughput approaches to the interpretation of mass spectra. Existing automated approaches are however error prone due to the complexity of the task. Accordingly, this thesis discusses and evaluates the application of neural networks to improving the sensitivity, specificity and robustness of current approaches to the automated interpretation of such mass spectral data.

Investigation Of The Nature Of Science Views Of Undergraduate Natural Science And Nonscience Majors In Biology Courses, Marie Christine Desaulniers Miller
Biological Sciences
Science educators have the common goal of helping students develop scientific literacy, including understanding of the nature of science (NOS). University faculties are challenged with the need to develop informed NOS views in several major student subpopulations, including science majors and nonscience majors. Research into NOS views of undergraduates, particularly science majors, has been limited. In this study, NOS views of undergraduates in introductory environmental science and upper-level animal behavior courses were measured using Likert items and open-ended prompts. Analysis revealed similarities in students' views between the two courses; both populations held a mix of naYve, transitional, and moderately informed …
