Perspectives On Intern Well-Being: The Importance Of Education, Support, And Professional Satisfaction, Heather Speller Sep 2010

Perspectives On Intern Well-Being: The Importance Of Education, Support, And Professional Satisfaction, Heather Speller

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore intern's perspectives on how the professional environment impacts their well-being. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted in March and April of 2009 with seventeen interns from residency programs in a variety of specialties at an urban teaching hospital. Investigators coded interview transcripts line-by-line, and identified recurrent themes through an iterative process of analyzing tagged quotations. Three themes (each with three sub-themes) characterized aspects of the professional environment that interns perceived as impacting their well-being: 1) high-quality education (workload, work hours, and quality and quantity of teaching), 2) professional development and satisfaction (making …

Automobile Injuries As Injuries With Remedies: Driving, Insurance, Torts, And Changing The Choice Architecture Of Auto Insurance Pricing, Jennifer B. Wriggins Sep 2010

Automobile Injuries As Injuries With Remedies: Driving, Insurance, Torts, And Changing The Choice Architecture Of Auto Insurance Pricing, Jennifer B. Wriggins

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

While mandatory auto insurance laws virtually guarantee the availability of remedies for auto injuries, other types of physical injuries, including those resulting from domestic violence, lack similar protections. By providing a broad array of compensation mechanisms to auto accident victims, the law encourages people to drive more. The rationale underlying that public policy has, however, eroded. Environmental degradation, public health problems, and other costs require overhauling the system. This Article recommends two changes to the auto insurance system aimed at encouraging people to drive less.

Fear Of Cancer, S. Lochlann Jain Sep 2010

Fear Of Cancer, S. Lochlann Jain

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

While the cancer rate and related statistics remain remarkably high, people rarely consider the actual suffering of people living with and dying from cancer as the real sacrifice for, and structural result of, the everyday use of carcinogens such as those in gasoline, pesticides, and cosmetics. On the heels of the recently published President's Cancer Panel Report, "Reducing Environmental Cancer Risk: What We Can Do Now," this Article aims to better understand why "fear of cancer" litigation has failed to accomplish its intended purpose-to distribute the costs of known and potentially toxic chemicals-and examines how the relevant law justifies this …

Creating Digital Heritage Content; Bridging Communities And Mediating Perspectives, Judith Van Der Elst, Heather Richards-Rissetto, Jorge Garcia

Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports

In this paper we focus our attention on an often overlooked aspect of digital heritage content, namely by whom how, and with what purpose such content is created. We evaluate digital materials that are anthropological and archaeological in nature, both digitized archives and newly created materials. In our work and efforts to understand and represent different cultural perspectives, we have encountered differences in cultural knowledge systems that have shown the need for cross-cultural consultation and communication as an essential first step in the creation of digital content for new systems of representation and knowledge transfer. Our efforts focus on developing …

Digital Tools, Strategic Alliances, And The Protection Of Traditional Knowledge, B Singer, Judith Van Der Elst, J Garcia

Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports

This white paper provides a means for indigenous peoples to communicate current information and impacts among constituents and tribal groups. These concepts are very important in understanding how these groups disseminate policy and resource utilization impacts such as energy policies related to traditional knowledge associated to generic resources. In todays society the development of Information Communication Technologies (ICT) is imminent yet, large segments of the world remain marginalized. Our contention is that peer-to-peer and inter-institutional networks can be used to connect local with global systems to close this divide. Using today virtual and digital technologies the gap can be bridged …

Retention And Graduation Of Hispanics In American Community Colleges, Claudia M. Griffin Sep 2010

Retention And Graduation Of Hispanics In American Community Colleges, Claudia M. Griffin

Theses and Dissertations

The Hispanic population in the United States is the fastest growing ethnic group. It is also one of the least-educated and poorest groups and one of the least researched nationally. The purpose of the study was to identify the variables that affect the persistence of Hispanic college students who begin their postsecondary educations at community colleges. The study used data from the 2004/06 Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. Persistence was defined as either graduating from or being enrolled in any Title IV postsecondary institution three years after the beginning of the study. Community …

Factors Influencing The Academic Success Of Second Generation Immigrant College Students, Natalya V. Boureiko Sep 2010

Factors Influencing The Academic Success Of Second Generation Immigrant College Students, Natalya V. Boureiko

Theses and Dissertations

The changing demographic situation in the U.S. creates paramount social problems as the population of immigrants grows. Because the higher education is the most effective tool for incorporating the immigrant populations into the society, the purpose of the proposed study was to determine what students' characteristics, parents' characteristics, as well as students' actions affect the academic attainment versus grade point average (GPA) of immigrant population in college. The study was based on longitudinal datasets NPSAS 2000, NPSAS 2004, and NPSAS 2008. There were three cross-sectional samples and statistical analysis included descriptive statistics and stepwise regression. The findings of the study …

The Effect Of Advanced Placement And Concurrent Enrollment On Post Secondary Math Achievement, Angela L. Kremers Sep 2010

The Effect Of Advanced Placement And Concurrent Enrollment On Post Secondary Math Achievement, Angela L. Kremers

Theses and Dissertations

Unprepared postsecondary students and poor high school retention rates emphasize a significant issue with education in the U.S. Although there have been increases in the number of programs to address retention and matriculation to degree attainment, little research has been completed to examine outcomes of these programs. Advanced placement and concurrent enrollment are two such programs in which high school students are purported to be better prepared for college while getting a head start on college credits. The purpose of the study was to examine the effect of advanced placement and concurrent enrollment on post secondary math achievement. The multi …

Identifying Opportunities For Collaborations In International Engineering Education Research On Problem- And Project-Based Learning, Kacey D. Beddoes, Brent K. Jesiek, Maura Borrego Sep 2010

Identifying Opportunities For Collaborations In International Engineering Education Research On Problem- And Project-Based Learning, Kacey D. Beddoes, Brent K. Jesiek, Maura Borrego

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

We report on the results of a study to examine the global state of engineering education research on problem- and project-based learning (PBL). This paper has two major aims. First, we analyze a large collection of conference papers and journal articles to report on research trends in PBL, including in specific, leading countries. Second, based upon our analysis as well as a literature review of meta-analyses/syntheses of PBL literature, we propose a theoretical model for conceptualizing international research collaborations. Based on this model, we make recommendations for future initiatives, including multinational collaborations for research on PBL in engineering education
