Predictors Of Acculturative Stress For International Students In The United States, Christopher Sullivan
Dissertations
International students in the United States are confronted with a wide range of challenges and difficulties as they move to a new country and need to adapt to a new cultural, social, andacademic environment. A Community-Academic Partnership To Improve Access To Healthy Foods In Low-Income Communities, Heather Kitzman-Ulrich, Mark Dehaven, Cindy Romero, Nicole Beltran
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Purpose: Access to healthy foods is often limited in low-income communities and prevents the adoption of a healthy diet needed to meet national dietary recommendations, reduce chronic disease, and prevent obesity. The Healthy Harvest Community Gardening Partnership is a community-based participatory research program between faith-based organizations, academic institutions, local philanthropy, and other non-profit institutions, created in 2009 for improving access to healthy foods and quality of life through a community garden network. Methods: Healthy Harvest uses a social ecological framework combining individual, interpersonal, and community level influences into a single program, and employs a train-the-trainer approach for providing expertise in …
The Ingredients Of Change: A Political Ecology Approach To Diabetes In The Somali Community Of Minnesota, Mina Tehrani
The Ingredients Of Change: A Political Ecology Approach To Diabetes In The Somali Community Of Minnesota, Mina Tehrani
Geography Capstone Projects
In the early 1990’s, due to political circumstances at home, Somali immigrants and refugees began arriving in the state of Minnesota in large numbers. Over the past two decades, Somali immigrants have come to comprise one of the most populous ethnic groups in the Twin Cities, and are the largest Somali population in the world outside of Eastern Africa. Although quantitative data is unavailable, qualitative evidence and testimonies of healthcare professionals support the conclusion that Somali immigrants in Minnesota suffer from higher rates of diabetes than non-immigrant groups and than they likely did before migration. Why might this be the …

Patterns Of Social Activity Engagement Among Older Hispanics And Their Relationship To Sociodemographic And Health Variables, Marta B. Rodríguez-Galán, Luis M. Falcón
Sociology Faculty/Staff Publications
The purpose of this study was to examine patterns of social activity engagement in a sample of older Hispanics (Puerto Rican, Dominican, and other Hispanic) and determine whether these patterns differed significantly from the comparison non-Hispanic White group. This article also analyzes how ethnicity, sociodemographic, and health variables (health problems and depression) relate to each of the activity engagement patterns. The factor analysis of social activities from the Norbeck Social Support Questionnaire yielded three factors, which describe engagement in social activities as: children and relatives active, friends and activities active, and senior services active. The results from the regression analyses …

The Function Of Narrative In Leadership: Theoretical Foundations And Empirical Evidence, Michael S. Carriger
The Function Of Narrative In Leadership: Theoretical Foundations And Empirical Evidence, Michael S. Carriger
WCBT Faculty Publications
This research is focused on the differential impacts of narrative and facts and figures on the understanding of corporate strategy or competitive advantage. In this way a theoretical (philosophical) foundation can be laid for narrative and the understanding of corporate strategy. Additionally, much needed theoretically sound, empirical validation can be offered for the use of narrative and storytelling by leaders within organizations as a means of creating, disseminating, and executing strategy. Employing a model derived from the tension between modern and post-modern thinking about the nature of ideas and concepts a conceptual framework is offered to try to explain the possible …

Shrouded In Stigma: A Heuristic Study Of Living With Hiv, Neal Stacy Rosenburg
Shrouded In Stigma: A Heuristic Study Of Living With Hiv, Neal Stacy Rosenburg
Dissertations
HIV-related stigma is a serious hindrance to addressing the recruitment, maintenance, and follow-up nursing care of HIV-infected persons. This study was anchored within the heuristic research model, which engaged both the researcher and participants in a dialogical and aesthetic manner to unveil the stigma of HIV. The close proximity of the researcher and study participants revealed the most visceral, emotional, and self-reflective nature of gathering data, while maintaining the integrity and rigor of a qualitative study. The purpose of this heuristic study was to examine the lived experiences of HIV-infected individuals relating to internalized stigma within an existential context. This …

Demystifying Conventional Assumptions: Do African American Parents Anticipate Investing Less Toward Their Children’S College Costs Than Their White Peers?, Abebayehu Aemero Tekleselassie
Demystifying Conventional Assumptions: Do African American Parents Anticipate Investing Less Toward Their Children’S College Costs Than Their White Peers?, Abebayehu Aemero Tekleselassie
Journal of Student Financial Aid
Some researchers and theorists tend to portray African American parents as lacking the cultural know-how to provide a supportive home environment that enhances college access and success for their children. Since contribution toward college costs is one tangible means by which researchers gauge parents’ commitment toward their children’s education, this study draws data from the National Longitudinal Study (NELS: 1988/2000) and examines how the amount and source of funding parents anticipate toward college costs differs between African Americans and Whites. Results indicate that while racial differences in anticipated college funding appear to favor Whites, who aggregately expect to contribute more …

The Monuments Of Amenmesse And Seti Ii: A Historical Inquiry, Roy Winston Hopper
The Monuments Of Amenmesse And Seti Ii: A Historical Inquiry, Roy Winston Hopper
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Many historical issues surround the late Nineteenth Dynasty after the reign of Merneptah, and one of them is the reigns reigns of Amenmesse and Seti II. These two kings ruled over a period in which both Amenmesse and Seti Ii were competing kings with evidence suggesting that Amenmesse founded a rival kingship during the reign of Seti II and managed to control ancient Nubia and Upper Egypt for at least four years. This dissertation seeks to examine the known monuments and monumental inscriptions belonging to Amenmesse and Seti II in order to answer historical, archaeological, genealogical, and epigraphic questions pertaining …
