Los Caminos Del Enfermo En Una Comunidad K’Iche’ De Guatemala: Una Contribución Del Análisis De Redes Al Estudio De Los Comportamientos De Búsqueda De Atención En Salud, Alejandro Cerón

Anthropology: Faculty Scholarship

Where Christ Dies Daily: Performances Of Faith At Orlando‘S Holy Land Experience, Sara B. Dykins Callahan Jan 2010

Where Christ Dies Daily: Performances Of Faith At Orlando‘S Holy Land Experience, Sara B. Dykins Callahan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This manuscript focuses on performances of place and faith inside the Holy Land Experience (HLE), an edutainment complex nestled in the fantasy nexus of Orlando, Florida. A self-proclaimed living-history museum, the HLE includes animatronic Bible characters and musical dramas. The HLE enacts and embodies evangelical narratives of Christianity and Christian faith, and visitors to the park are asked to join the performances, blurring the distinctions between spectators and professional actors. I argue that visitors' performances of faith invest the space of the HLE with sacredness, while the location and design of the HLE infuses the space with elements of the …

Aretē And Physics: The Lesson Of Plato's Timaeus, John R. Wolfe Jan 2010

Aretē And Physics: The Lesson Of Plato's Timaeus, John R. Wolfe

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Plato's Timaeus is traditionally read as a work dedicated to the sole purpose of describing the origin and nature of the cosmos, as a straightforward attempt by Plato to produce a peri phuseos treatise. In accord with this reading, the body of Timaeus' monologue is then seen as nothing more than an attempt by Plato to convey his own cosmological doctrines.

I propose an alternative to the view that the Timaeus is nothing more than a textbook of Platonic physics. The Timaeus is rather squarely focused on the human being, in her moral and political dimensions, and on her relation …

Multicultural Counseling Competency Development With A Guatemala Travel Study, Mary L. Fawcett, Cynthia A. Briggs, George Maycock, Elizabeth Stine Jan 2010

Multicultural Counseling Competency Development With A Guatemala Travel Study, Mary L. Fawcett, Cynthia A. Briggs, George Maycock, Elizabeth Stine

Journal for International Counselor Education

This quantitative study focused on the self-rating of multicultural counseling competencies by counselor education graduate students in a pre-post design. Twelve students participated in a ten day travel study course to Antigua, Guatemala in May, 2008. Prior to travel, students self-rated their levels of multicultural competency using the Multicultural Counseling Competencies Self Assessment (MCCSA) developed by Arredondo et al. (1996). Following travel, students reassessed their levels of competency using the same measurement tool. All students’ self-ratings of multicultural counseling competence increased. The authors discuss implications of this study and provide recommendations for future research.

The Impact Of News Coverage On Conflict: Toward Greater Understanding, Richard C. Reuben Jan 2010

The Impact Of News Coverage On Conflict: Toward Greater Understanding, Richard C. Reuben

Marquette Law Review

To be sure, the media and conflict have been studied from the perspective of a variety of mass media theories, including framing, critical discourse analysis, and others. While this research has been helpful in describing conflict coverage, it has not yet gone the next step: to assessing the impact of that coverage on the conflict itself. I see this as an interdisciplinary task, and in this Article, I propose that principles of conflict theory can be joined with mass communications research to take this next step, to explore and understand the question of the news media’s impact on conflict. In …

In The Global Village, Can War Survive?, Susan G. Hackley

Marquette Law Review

William L. Ury once asked: "What if fighting, violence, and war were preventable—and we simply didn’t know it? What if we didn’t know it because we had never fully tried to prevent them? What if we had never really tried because we had never really believed prevention to be possible?"

Most people understandably steer clear of violent conflict, only reading about it in their morning newspaper or online, or watching it on the evening news from the safety of their homes. Others, however, choose work that takes them directly into harm’s way. Soldiers, of course, are in a profession that …

Recreational, Cultural And Aesthetic Services From Estuarine And Coastal Ecosystems, Paulo Augusto Nunes, Andrea Ghermandi, Rosimeiry Portela, Nalini Rao, Sonja S. Teelucksingh

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The role of economic analysis in guiding the sustainable development of estuarine and coastal ecosystems is investigated based on a comprehensive review of the literature on the valuation of the recreation, cultural and aesthetic services. The implications of the findings for the sustainable management of coral reefs, Marine Protected Areas, and Small Island Developing States are discussed. Finally, the potential of meta-analytical benefit transfer and scaling up of values at various aggregation levels is demonstrated in the context of coastal tourism and recreation in Europe. The results of the study support the conclusion that the non-material values provided by coastal …
