Degrees Of Emotion: Judicial Responses To Victim Impact Statements, Mary Lay Schuster, Amy Propen Feb 2010

Degrees Of Emotion: Judicial Responses To Victim Impact Statements, Mary Lay Schuster, Amy Propen

English

Emotional standards and hierarchies in the courtroom may affect judicial reactions to victim impact statements. Based on judicial conversations and courtroom observations in two judicial districts in Minnesota, we suggest that judges contrast emotion with reason in order to maintain control of their courtrooms; when faced with emotional expressions in victim impact statements, judges appreciate expressions of compassion and tolerate expressions of grief but are uncomfortable with expressions of anger. These judicial responses to emotional expression, however, must be contextualized; for example, the judges we spoke with often articulated different reactions to impact statements given by victims of sexual assault, …

Socio-Cultural Dimensions Of Cluster Vs. Single Home Photovoltaic Solar Energy Systems In Rural Nepal, Kimber Haddix Mckay Feb 2010

Socio-Cultural Dimensions Of Cluster Vs. Single Home Photovoltaic Solar Energy Systems In Rural Nepal, Kimber Haddix Mckay

Anthropology Faculty Publications

This paper analyzes the socio-cultural dimensions of obstacles facing solar photovoltaic projects in two villages in rural Nepal. The study was conducted in Humla District, Nepal, one of the most remote and impoverished regions of the country. There are no roads in the district, homes lack running water and villagers’ health suffers from high levels of indoor air pollution from open cooking/heating fires and the smoky torches traditionally burned for light. The introduction of solar energy is important to these villagers, as it removes one major source of indoor air pollution from homes and provides brighter light than the traditional …

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

The Effect Of Water Depth On Energy Expenditure And Perception Of Effort In Female Subjects While Walking, Wafa Alkurdi, David R. Paul, Kelsey Sadowski, Dennis G. Dolny Feb 2010

The Effect Of Water Depth On Energy Expenditure And Perception Of Effort In Female Subjects While Walking, Wafa Alkurdi, David R. Paul, Kelsey Sadowski, Dennis G. Dolny

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The purpose of this study was to compare energy expenditure (EE), heart rate, and perceived effort during walking in water at several depths versus land in female participants. Eighteen females walked on three separate days on a land treadmill (Land) and in a water treadmill (ATM) at 30° C at 6 speeds. Water depth was at the xiphoid (xip), 10 cm below (-10 cm), and 10 cm above xip (+10 cm). Heart rate (HR), oxygen consumption (VO2) and carbon dioxide production (VCO2) were recorded. RPE overall (RPE-O) and RPE legs (RPE-L) were solicited following each bout. Regardless of walking speed, …

Differences In Individualistic And Collectivistic Tendencies Among College Students In Japan And The United States, Emiko Kobayashi, Harold R. Kerbo, Susan F. Sharp Feb 2010

Differences In Individualistic And Collectivistic Tendencies Among College Students In Japan And The United States, Emiko Kobayashi, Harold R. Kerbo, Susan F. Sharp

Social Sciences

It is a worldwide stereotype that Japanese, compared to Americans, are oriented more toward collectivism. But this stereotypical notion of more collectivism among Japanese, which typically stems from a view that individualism and collectivism stand at opposite ends of a continuum, has been filled with dashed empirical findings, especially in a sample of college students. In the current study, following the view that individualism and collectivism are two separate concepts rather than one with two extremes, we test and compare both individualistic and collectivistic tendencies among college students in Japan and the United States. A review of theories and research …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Two correlative approaches to the challenge of ecological niche modeling (genetic algorithm, maximum entropy) were used to estimate the potential global distribution of the invasive fruit fly, Bactrocera invadens, based on associations between known occurrence records and a set of environmental predictor variables. The two models yielded similar estimates, largely corresponding to Equatorial climate classes with high levels of precipitation. The maximum entropy approach was somewhat more conservative in its evaluation of suitability, depending on thresholds for presence/absence that are selected, largely excluding areas with distinct dry seasons; the genetic algorithm models, in contrast, indicate that climate class as partly …

Comments On The Emergence And Persistence Of Inequality In Premodern Societies, Kenneth M. Ames

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The author discusses the development and persistence of permanent inequality in human societies. He comments on an article which undertakes inequality in premodern societies and proposed that intergenerational wealth transmission is the reason for the evolution and persistence of inequality, mentioning the three categories of wealth including material, relational, and embodied.

What Is ‘Catholic Enlightenment’?, Ulrich Lehner Feb 2010

What Is ‘Catholic Enlightenment’?, Ulrich Lehner

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

Recent research has demonstrated not only the existence of a variety of Enlightenments, but also the importance of the religious aspect to this worldwide process. In particular, special interest has been paid to the long-neglected Catholic Enlightenment, which entailed many strands of thought by Catholic intellectuals and political leaders who attempted to renew and reform Catholicism from the middle of the 18th to the early 19th century. This renewal was an apologetic endeavor designed to defend the essential dogmas of Catholic Christianity by explaining their rationality in modern terminology and by reconciling Catholicism with modern culture. The Catholic Enlightenment was …

Evolution Of The Cerebellar Cortex: The Selective Expansion Of Prefrontal-Projecting Cerebellar Lobules, J. H. Balsters, E. Cussans, J. Diedrichsen, Kimberley A. Phillips, T. M. Preuss, J. K. Rilling, N. Ramnani Feb 2010

Psychology Faculty Research

It has been suggested that interconnected brain areas evolve in tandem because evolutionary pressures act on complete functional systems rather than on individual brain areas. The cerebellar cortex has reciprocal connections with both the prefrontal cortex and motor cortex, forming independent loops with each. Specifically, in capuchin monkeys cerebellar cortical lobules Crus I and Crus II connect with prefrontal cortex, whereas the primary motor cortex connects with cerebellar lobules V, VI, VIIb, and VIIIa. Comparisons of extant primate species suggest that the prefrontal cortex has expanded more than cortical motor areas in human evolution. Given the enlargement of the prefrontal …

Domestication Alone Does Not Lead To Inequality: Intergenerational Wealth Transmission Among Horticulturalists, Michael Gurven, Monique Borgerhoff Mulder, Paul L. Hooper, Hillard Kaplan, Robert Quinlan, Rebecca Sear, Eric Schniter, Christopher Von Rueden, Samuel Bowles, Tom Hertz, Adrian Bell

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

We present empirical measures of wealth inequality and its intergenerational transmission among four horticulturalist populations. Wealth is construed broadly as embodied somatic and neural capital, including body size, fertility and cultural knowledge, material capital such as land and household wealth, and relational capital in the form of coalitional support and field labor. Wealth inequality is moderate for most forms of wealth, and intergenerational wealth transmission is low for material resources and moderate for embodied and relational wealth. Our analysis suggests that domestication alone does not transform social structure; rather, the presence of scarce, defensible resources may be required before inequality …

An Analysis Of The Publishing Activity Of Keston Institute In The Context Of Its Last Three Years Of Operation In Oxford (2003-2006), Davorin Peterlin Feb 2010

An Analysis Of The Publishing Activity Of Keston Institute In The Context Of Its Last Three Years Of Operation In Oxford (2003-2006), Davorin Peterlin

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

By way of introduction, the study will give an outline of the history of Keston Institute (KI). It will then identify the period of three years (2003-2006) as the period during which KI attempted to integrate in the academic life of the Oxford University under the new director. The period ended with the effective closing down of the institution in its historical shape and with regard to many of its previous activities. On the surface this decision had to do with increasing financial difficulties, but it is the author's contention that on another level it was an outcome of a …
