Lilian Westcott Hale And Nancy Hale: From Victorian To Modern In Art And Text, Norah Hardin Lind

Theses and Dissertations

Lilian Westcott Hale (1880-1963) and her daughter Nancy Hale (1908-1988) built successful careers during a period of transition in America, as Victorian mores were replaced by new modern freedoms. Greater independence for women had evolved during the preceding century, before the influential cultural factors which occurred during the early twentieth century like urbanization and world war. This interdisciplinary analysis of Lilian Hale‘s artwork and Nancy Hale‘s writings demonstrates the imprint of the surrounding world on their work. Lilian Hale‘s art is influenced by her Victorian childhood, and Nancy Hale‘s fiction reveals many conflicts of the modern era. The study of …

The Meaning Of Development Of Filipinos By Filipinos In Diaspora: Rhetorical Vision In Participatory Communication, Louella Lim Lofranco Apr 2010

The Meaning Of Development Of Filipinos By Filipinos In Diaspora: Rhetorical Vision In Participatory Communication, Louella Lim Lofranco

Theses and Dissertations

Development is currently one of the drivers of international migration resulting in south-to-north or third-to-first world movements of immigrants seeking for a better life in more developed countries. Consequently, new economic diaspora communities are being formed, most of which help alleviate poverty of relatives back home through regular remittances, now considered an important source of foreign capital in many developing economies. Amidst new challenges for the field of development is the question of the relevance of development communication in migration and diaspora. This exploratory study investigates the role of participatory development communication in expanding diaspora contributions to their home countries. …

Optimality Principles For Model-Based Prediction Of Human Gait, Marko Ackermann, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert Apr 2010

Optimality Principles For Model-Based Prediction Of Human Gait, Marko Ackermann, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Although humans have a large repertoire of potential movements, gait patterns tend to be stereotypical and appear to be selected according to optimality principles such as minimal energy. When applied to dynamic musculoskeletal models such optimality principles might be used to predict how a patient's gait adapts to mechanical interventions such as prosthetic devices or surgery. In this paper we study the effects of different performance criteria on predicted gait patterns using a 2D musculoskeletal model. The associated optimal control problem for a family of different cost functions was solved utilizing the direct collocation method. It was found that fatigue-like …

Even Satan Spoke Hebrew, Gilad Elbom Apr 2010

Even Satan Spoke Hebrew, Gilad Elbom

Theses and Dissertations

A novel preceded by a scholarly introduction, EVEN SATAN SPOKE HEBREW employs a variety of metafictional devices—collage, appropriation, borrowing, minoring, framing, indeterminacy, textual parody, obtrusive narration, structural constraints—in an attempt to propose a deliberate departure from the concepts of mimetic art, verisimilitude, and believability. Set in Jerusalem and Los Angeles, it revolves around an aspiring writer who insists on working in a foreign language, a self-professed exile accused of betraying her homeland, national identity, and mother tongue. When her first novel disappears—somehow she manages to misplace the only copy of her manuscript—she embarks on an intertextual journey in search of …

The Effect Of Male Confederate Presence, Betting And Game Play On Male Participant Gambling Behavior In Blackjack, Casey L. Mcdougall

Theses and Dissertations

Problematic gambling behavior, left unchecked, can be a debilitating condition; however, little research from the behavior-analytic perspective has been conducted on the topic. The present study was an extension of McDougall et al. (2008). The present study consisted of an experiment that had male participants play the game Blackjack. The variables manipulated were the confederate presence and confederate style of game play. This experiment investigated each variable using a within-subjects design. Each participant (N=16) was required to complete six gambling sessions. Results showed that the confederate's actions during the leave sessions influenced the gambling behavior of the participants. In addition, …

The Influence Of Positive Mother-Child Verbal Interactions On Adolescent Mothers' Literacy, Heather-Lee M. Baron Apr 2010

The Influence Of Positive Mother-Child Verbal Interactions On Adolescent Mothers' Literacy, Heather-Lee M. Baron

Education

The purpose of this six-month qualitative microethnographic case study was to determine what influence a family literacy program based on positive mother-child verbal interactions would have on the participating adolescent mothers' literacy skills. The design of the program was founded on the Hart and Risley study (1995) and their findings regarding the five categories of significant family experiences that enhance children's vocabulary: language diversity, feedback tone, symbolic emphasis, guidance style, and responsiveness. These experiences stress the importance of affirmative interactions between children and their parents. The three adolescent mothers who participated in the study were single, white, of low socioeconomic …

Maybe An Answer Is In There: Life Story In Dialogue, Jennifer L. Carroll Apr 2010

Maybe An Answer Is In There: Life Story In Dialogue, Jennifer L. Carroll

Anthropology

This dissertation explores the ways in which Gwich'in women's lives have changed over the past century through the life story and historical and cultural reflections of Vera Englishoe, a Neets'qii Gwich'in woman in her late 50s from Venetie and Fort Yukon. Vera's story illustrates one woman's pathway through changing times and provides an example of resilience in the face of family and community turmoil. This work also shows how Vera uses stories to sustain herself and others amid dialogues that challenge Gwich'in identity and how the Gwich'in approach to knowledge, understanding, and stories emphasize personal experience and accountability, promotes independent …

Come On Ugzruk, Let Me Win: Experience, Relationality, And Knowing In Kigiqtaamiut Hunting And Ethnography, Josh Wisniewski

Anthropology

This ethnography of marine mammal hunting explores linkages between personal experiences and shared understandings of ecological phenomena among a group of Kigiqtaamiut hunters in Shishmaref, Alaska. Specifically it examines the relationships between Kigiqtaamiut hunters' experiences in the world and means by which the experienced world is brought into being through hunters' ways knowing. This work is informed by three spring hunting seasons spent as a member of a familial marine mammal hunting crew and over 20 months of fieldwork. It addresses hunters' ways of learning, knowing and directly experiencing the reality of the phenomenal world. Exploring a multiplicity of modes …

Landscape Structure And Terrain-Based Hunting Range Models: Exploring Late Prehistoric Land Use In The Nutzotin Mountains, Southcentral Alaska, Jody J. Patterson

Anthropology

Striving for better delineation of site function, land use, and settlement patterns, the data and analyses presented in this dissertation aim to explore more robust and objective avenues of inquiry for addressing the variability and distribution of surface lithic scatters using terrain-based hunting range models. Using large mammal distributions, Athabascan hunting ranges, and topography, landscape metrics, and an exploratory data analysis (EDA) framework, landscape structure is quantified and compared across much of the Alaskan Interior to identify reoccurring patterns related to hunting land use and the range characteristics of caribou, moose, and sheep. Key components of the landscape structure are …

Skin Drums, Squeeze Boxes, Fiddles And Phonographs: Musical Interaction In The Western Arctic, Late 18th Through Early 20th Centuries, Paul R. Krejci

Anthropology

This dissertation explores the nature of early globalization in the Western Arctic with a focus on musical interaction between indigenous and foreign populations during the late 18th through the 20 th centuries. The region experienced an unprecedented amount of cultural contact represented by various cultural groups including Native Alaskan, Canadian, Chukotkan, European American, African American, Latin American, Asian American, Oceanic peoples and others. Numbering in the thousands, natives and non-natives developed continuous and long-term relations working as explorers, whalers, traders, missionaries, miners, hunters, trappers, seamstresses, educators, law enforcement officials, and scientists. The Western Arctic's ethnically diverse population, relatively harsh physical …
