The United States' Failure To Ratify The International Covenant On Economic, Social And Cultural Rights: Must The Poor Be Always With Us., Ann M. Piccard Dec 2010

The United States' Failure To Ratify The International Covenant On Economic, Social And Cultural Rights: Must The Poor Be Always With Us., Ann M. Piccard

The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice

The United States remains one of only half a dozen U.N. member states that have yet to ratify the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. The treaty was signed by President Jimmy Carter in 1977, but no steps toward ratification have ever been taken. Meanwhile, the gap between the rich and the poor in this country continues to grow, and is among the highest of any democracy on earth. The United States is historically suspicious of even recognizing economic, social and cultural rights as “rights” that might be amenable to any method of enforcement. As a result, the …

Moreover, it proposes that open-ended questions invites preschoolers to offer lengthier and more detailed responses, thus stimulating their language growth.

Emotional Response To Auditory And Visual Stimuli, Amy Pitchforth Dec 2010

Emotional Response To Auditory And Visual Stimuli, Amy Pitchforth

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Emotion can be studied by measuring physiological, behavioral, and verbal responses to specific stimuli. In current research, it is most common to use visual stimuli to measure the emotional response. One of the most common sets of stimuli used for this purpose is the International Affective Picture Systems (IAPS). An additional set of stimuli, the International Affective Digital Sounds (IADS), was created to be an auditory equivalent of the IAPS. The present study sought to compare the emotional response (measured with Heart Rate, Skin Conductance, and a self-report measure of emotion called the SAM) to sounds from the IADS and …

Protein Preservation In Fossil Whale Bones Of The Miocene/Pliocene Pisco Formation, Peru, Uriel Leme Vidal Dec 2010

Protein Preservation In Fossil Whale Bones Of The Miocene/Pliocene Pisco Formation, Peru, Uriel Leme Vidal

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Fossil remains have recently been the focus of considerable attention due to several independent reports of protein and soft-tissue preservation in ancient biological remains. The fossil whales from the Pisco Formation in Peru were previously reported to be very well preserved. A considerable percentage of these whales have their bones still articulated, and not a few have fossil baleen in life position. In this study we assayed bone samples from some fossil whales for ultrastructure preservation and the presence of original protein/proteinaceous materials. For analysis of fine details of structural preservation we used light microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). …

Long-Term Hypoxia Regulates Cortisol Biosynthesis In The Ovine Fetal Adrenal Cortex, Vladimir Enrique Vargas Dec 2010

Long-Term Hypoxia Regulates Cortisol Biosynthesis In The Ovine Fetal Adrenal Cortex, Vladimir Enrique Vargas

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Previous studies demonstrated enhanced fetal adrenal cortisol biosynthesis following exposure to long-term hypoxia (LTH). The studies presented here were designed to determine the mechanism(s) regulating this important adaptive endocrine response. Ewes were maintained at high altitude (3,820 m) from approximately day 40 to 138-141 of gestation. Fetal adrenal glands were then collected from LTH and age matched normoxic controls. Dispersed fetal adrenal cortical cells (FACs) were untreated, treated with ACTH, treated in combination with ACTH precursors (POMC and 22-kDa pro-ACTH), or pre-treated with H-89 and or UO126 followed by ACTH treatment. Following ACTH treatment, cortisol biosynthesis increased in both groups …

Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy And Transition Metals In Alzheimer's Disease, Matthew Schrag Dec 2010

Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy And Transition Metals In Alzheimer's Disease, Matthew Schrag

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Alterations in brain metals homeostasis and particularly brain iron overload have been postulated to play a role in Alzheimer's disease, contributing to oxidative stress and neuronal injury; however, the source of this iron is not clear and may be due to metabolic derangement(s), failed iron clearance mechanisms or exogenous deposition such as through bleeding. This series of studies was designed to evaluate the extent of metals dyshomeostasis in the Alzheimer's disease brain and specifically whether microvascular bleeding is a major contributor to Alzheimer's disease-related iron overload. Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is a vascular manifestation of Alzheimer's disease present to some …

Characterizing And Treating The Neuropathology Of Tuberous Sclerosis Complex In The Mouse, Sharon W. Way Dec 2010

Characterizing And Treating The Neuropathology Of Tuberous Sclerosis Complex In The Mouse, Sharon W. Way

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a multisystem, autosomal dominant disorder affecting approximately 1 in 6000 births. Developmental brain abnormalities cause substantial morbidity and mortality and often lead to neurological disease including epilepsy, cognitive disabilities, and autism. TSC is caused by inactivating mutations in either TSC1 or TSC2, whose protein products are known inhibitors of mTORC1, an important kinase regulating translation and cell growth. Nonetheless, neither the pathophysiology of the neurological manifestations of TSC nor the extent of mTORC1 involvement in the development of these lesions is known. Murine models would greatly advance the study of this debilitating disorder. This thesis …

Rmi1 Is Essential For Early Embryonic Development And Attenuation Of Tumor Development, Haoyi Chen Dec 2010

Rmi1 Is Essential For Early Embryonic Development And Attenuation Of Tumor Development, Haoyi Chen

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

RMI1 (BLM-Associated Protein 75 or Blap75) is highly conserved from yeast to human. Previous studies have shown that hRMI1 is required for BLM/TopoIIIα/RMI1 complex stability and function. However, in vivo functions of RMI1 remain elusive. To address this question, I generated RMI1 knockout mice by homologous replacement targeting. While RMI1+/- mice showed no obvious phenotype, deletion of both RMI1 alleles leads to early embryonic lethality before implantation. I then generated RMI1/p53 double knockout mice. After ionizing radiation treatment at 4Gy, RMI1/p53 double-heterzygous mice showed shortened tumor latency and aggressive tumor types when comparing with wild type, RMI1+/- and p53+/- control …

Analysis Of Β8 Integrin In Neurogenesis And Neurovascular Homeostasis, Aaron K. Mobley Dec 2010

Analysis Of Β8 Integrin In Neurogenesis And Neurovascular Homeostasis, Aaron K. Mobley

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Neurogenesis in the adult mouse brain occurs within the subventricular zone (SVZ) of the lateral ventricle. In the SVZ, neural stem cells (NSC) reside in a specialized microenvironment, or vascular niche, consisting of blood vessels and their basement membranes. Most NSCs in the SVZ differentiate into progenitor cells, which further differentiate to generate neuroblasts, which then migrate from the SVZ to the olfactory bulbs (OB) along the rostral migratory stream (RMS). ECM-mediated adhesion and signaling within the vascular niche likely contribute to proper NSC self-renewal, survival, differentiation and neuroblast motility. The mechanisms that control these events are poorly understood. Previous …

Anencephaly: Concepts Of Personhood, Ethical Questions, And Nursing Care, Jessica L. Ryskamp Dec 2010

Anencephaly: Concepts Of Personhood, Ethical Questions, And Nursing Care, Jessica L. Ryskamp

Senior Honors Theses

Anencephaly is a neural tube defect that severely limits the lifespan of affected infants. While these infants have no higher brain function, they are still persons, and should be given the same moral and ethical considerations as healthy infants. With this in mind, organ donation procedures should follow the same guidelines that apply to other donors. Because a large part of nursing care for anencephalic infants is palliative care, nurses need appropriate training to care effectively for both the infant and the family, providing for physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual needs.

The "Enlightened Barbarity" Of Inclusive Fitness And Wrongful Death: Biological Justifications For An Investment Theory Of Loss In Wycko V. Gnodtke, Ryan Shannon Dec 2010

The "Enlightened Barbarity" Of Inclusive Fitness And Wrongful Death: Biological Justifications For An Investment Theory Of Loss In Wycko V. Gnodtke, Ryan Shannon

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Wrongful death laws should permit and encourage courts and juries to consider the survivors' investment in decedents when determining wrongful death damages, given new biological justifications for this theory of loss. The investment theory of damages, which permits an award of damages based on the investment of financial resources relatives make in one another, originated in Michigan's courts in the early 1 960s, but as of present day has been largely abrogated. In the context of modern understandings of evolutionary biology, including kin selection theory and sociobiology, the investment theory of recovery accords with the goals of corrective justice as …

Exhausted Or Unlicensed: Can Field-Of-Use Restrictions In Biotech License Agreements Still Prevent Off-Label Use Promotion After Quanta Computer?, Kristal M. Wicks Dec 2010

Exhausted Or Unlicensed: Can Field-Of-Use Restrictions In Biotech License Agreements Still Prevent Off-Label Use Promotion After Quanta Computer?, Kristal M. Wicks

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “In the biotechnology (biotech) industry, companies must be increasingly aware of their intellectual property and how their licensing strategies can impact their rights. When licensing patented technology, it is common practice for biotech companies to include restricted field-of-use provisions in their license agreements. Such provisions permit a licensee to only use licensed technology in a defined field and restrict use or development in another field. This licensing strategy plays an important role within the biotech industry because it allows companies to more effectively control their intellectual property and to more efficiently research and develop pharmaceutical products.

A problem that …

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Coarctation of the aorta (CoA) is often considered a relatively simple disease, but long-term outcomes suggest otherwise as life expectancies are decades less than in the average population and substantial morbidity often exists. What follows is an expanded version of collective work conducted by the authors' and numerous collaborators that was presented at the 1st International Conference on Computational Simulation in Congenital Heart Disease pertaining to recent advances for CoA. The work begins by focusing on what is known about blood flow, pressure and indices of wall shear stress (WSS) in patients with normal vascular anatomy from both clinical imaging …

Age-Associated Changes In Synaptic Lipid Raft Proteins Revealed By Two-Dimensional Fluorescence Difference Gel Electrophoresis, Lei Jiang, Jianwen Fang, David S. Moore, Natalia V. Gogichaeva, Nadezhda A. Galeva, Mary L. Michaelis, Asma Zaidi Dec 2010

Age-Associated Changes In Synaptic Lipid Raft Proteins Revealed By Two-Dimensional Fluorescence Difference Gel Electrophoresis, Lei Jiang, Jianwen Fang, David S. Moore, Natalia V. Gogichaeva, Nadezhda A. Galeva, Mary L. Michaelis, Asma Zaidi

Faculty and Staff Publications

Brain aging is associated with a progressive decline in cognitive function though the molecular mechanisms remain unknown. Functional changes in brain neurons could be due to age-related alterations in levels of specific proteins critical for information processing. Specialized membrane microdomains known as 'lipid rafts' contain protein complexes involved in many signal transduction processes. This study was undertaken to determine if two-dimensional fluorescence difference gel electrophoresis (2D DIGE) analysis of proteins in synaptic membrane lipid rafts revealed age-dependent alterations in levels of raft proteins. Five pairs of young and aged rat synaptic membrane rafts were subjected to DIGE separation, followed by …

History Of The Indian Caste System And Its Impact On India Today, Manali S. Deshpande Dec 2010

History Of The Indian Caste System And Its Impact On India Today, Manali S. Deshpande

Social Sciences

The Indian Caste System is historically one of the main dimensions where people in India are socially differentiated through class, religion, region, tribe, gender, and language. Although this or other forms of differentiation exist in all human societies, it becomes a problem when one or more of these dimensions overlap each other and become the sole basis of systematic ranking and unequal access to valued resources like wealth, income, power and prestige. The Indian Caste System is considered a closed system of stratification, which means that a person’s social status is obligated to which caste they were born into. There …

Rangeland Condition Assessment Of A Portion Of The Cal Poly Sheep Unit, Colin S. Mckim Dec 2010

Rangeland Condition Assessment Of A Portion Of The Cal Poly Sheep Unit, Colin S. Mckim

Animal Science

This rangeland condition assessment was conducted as part of the Cal Poly Rangeland Condition Assessment Project. Five pastures comprising 31.7 acres at the Cal Poly sheep unit were assessed to collect baseline ecological information. Methods used were Line-point Intercept, Belt Transect, Residual Dry Matter, and the rangeland health indicators recommended by Pyke et al., 2002. Additionally, a preliminary species list was collected. The rangeland health assessment method found all pastures to have no to slight departure from the local reference area when evaluated for soil and site stability, hydrologic function, and biotic integrity.

La Buscadora: Una Novelita, Brynne Marie Gilbert Dec 2010

La Buscadora: Una Novelita, Brynne Marie Gilbert

World Languages and Cultures

This project is a fictional novella which manipulates the boundaries of identity and time in order to explore the ways in which and to what extent one depends upon the other. Because society converts time into a fixed entity of measurement for practicality’s sake, one of the attempts of this novella is to foreground the ambiguity of time so as to illustrate that the confinements that society has placed upon it are not characteristics of time itself. Upon establishing the indefinite nature of time, the text then ponders what becomes of our notion of identity if we are not permitted …

Epigenetic Regulation Of Neuronal Maturation: The Effect Of Mecp2 And Micrornas On The Maturation Of Hippocampal Neurons, Richard D. Smrt Dec 2010

Epigenetic Regulation Of Neuronal Maturation: The Effect Of Mecp2 And Micrornas On The Maturation Of Hippocampal Neurons, Richard D. Smrt

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Dendrites and the dendritic spines of neurons play key roles in the connectivity of the brain and have been recognized as the locus of long-term synaptic plasticity, which is correlated with learning and memory. The development of dendrites and spines in the mammalian central nervous system is a complex process that requires specific molecular events over a period of time. It has been shown that specific molecules are needed not only at the spines point of contact, but also at a distance, providing signals that initiate a cascade of events leading to synapse formation. The specific molecules that act to …

In this thesis, I review the current trends in diagnosis and disease control of JD and present the results of the studies on the seroreactivity of two proteins encoded for by the MAP1152-MAP1156 gene cluster. MAP1152 encodes for a PPE protein and MAP1156 encodes a diacylglycerol acyltransferase involved in triglyceride metabolism and classified in the uncharacterized protein family UPF0089. Maltose-binding protein (MBP) tagged recombinant MAP proteins were purified from Escherichia coli. …

Staphylococcus Aureus Virulence Factors Synthesis Is Controlled By Central Metabolism, Yefei Zhu Dec 2010

Staphylococcus Aureus Virulence Factors Synthesis Is Controlled By Central Metabolism, Yefei Zhu

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Staphylococcus aureus is a versatile pathogen that can survive in diverse host environments. This versatility depends on its ability to sense nutrients and respond by modulating gene expression, including the synthesis of virulence determinants. In addition to its ability to synthesize virulence factors, the capacity of S. aureus to form biofilms is an important mediator of virulence in certain infections. Biofilms are a complex aggregation of bacteria commonly encapsulated by an adhesive exopolysaccharide matrix (polysaccharide intercellular adhesin; PIA). To study S. aureus biofilm formation, we assessed the metabolic requirements of S. aureus growing in a biofilm and …

The In Situ Function Of A Microbial Community Profiled By Ft-Ir: A Snapshot In Time, Ryan Roberts Dec 2010

The In Situ Function Of A Microbial Community Profiled By Ft-Ir: A Snapshot In Time, Ryan Roberts

Department of Biochemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Photographs of an ecosystem are an important tool in macro-community ecology. The photograph is a permanent record of species phenotype. In microbiology, biochemical activity provides the most descriptive information of an organism’s phenotype. A method for fingerprinting all biochemical activities occurring within a microbial community is analogous to a photograph. Infrared spectroscopy in the region between wavelengths 2500 to 20,000 nm (mid-IR) is a well established instrumental method for fingerprinting the total biochemical profile of axenic cultures. Spectra are complex and sensitive as demonstrated by the ability to discriminate between strains of bacteria, fungi, and algae. This thesis develops the …

Justice Souter And The Civil Rules, Scott Dodson Dec 2010

Justice Souter And The Civil Rules, Scott Dodson

Faculty Publications

Justice Souter’s recent retirement from the Court after nearly twenty years presents a unique opportunity to comment on his legacy. No doubt others will eulogize or castigate him for his membership in the Planned Parenthood v. Casey troika, but there is much more to the man and his jurisprudence. Indeed, the danger is that Justice Souter will be pigeonholed into one opinion, an opinion that he wrote early in his Supreme Court career, to the detriment of understanding the complex justice that he was. And what it finds is a justice deeply committed to the fair treatment of the litigants …
