Regulation Of Cyclin E1 By The Breast Cancer Microenvironment, Yuehan Wu May 2010

Regulation Of Cyclin E1 By The Breast Cancer Microenvironment, Yuehan Wu

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

The behavior of breast epithelial cells is influenced by their microenvironment, which includes stromal cells and extracellular matrix. During breast cancer progression, the tissue microenvironment fails to control proliferation, resulting in uncontrolled growth and invasion. Upon invasion, the extracellular matrix encountered by breast cancer cells changes from primarily laminin and collagen IV to primarily collagen I. The current study used a three-dimensional (3D) collagen I culture model to address how the microenvironment controls the breast cancer cell cycle after invasion through the basement membrane. We show that culturing breast cancer cells in 3D collagen I inhibits proliferation through direct regulation …

Energy Restriction During Development In Breeding Gilts: An Economic Analysis, Justin Cech May 2010

Energy Restriction During Development In Breeding Gilts: An Economic Analysis, Justin Cech

Department of Agricultural Economics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Swine production has become a low-margin business. As costs of production have increased, producers are continuing to increase efficiency in market pig production and gilt development. Restricting energy intake during gilt development could have a positive impact on a producer’s bottom line, but few studies have economically analyzed production differences caused by energy restriction. This study utilized gilt development and market pig production data from biological studies that included a 2x2 factorial arrangement of half-sibling maternal lines (LWxLR and L45X) entering two gilt development programs. In one program, gilts were fed on an ad libitum basis. In the other, gilts …

"If A Passage Could Be Found": The Power Of Myth (And Money) In North American Exploration, Brenden Rensink May 2010

"If A Passage Could Be Found": The Power Of Myth (And Money) In North American Exploration, Brenden Rensink

Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The popular lore of North American exploration and westward expansion has oft been woven with themes of heroic bravery, divine providence and Manifest Destiny. These tales indeed relate portions of actual history, but also offer insight into the self-perception and culture of the societies perpetuating them. As larger-than-life figures braved the "unknown" in the name of nation or creed, the motives behind their ventures often were not so singular. The ever-driving force of economic gain stood as a foundation for most expeditions. Simultaneously justifying the current expedition and providing support for future endeavors, explorers interested in self-preservation placed a premium …

The Ontology Of Pure Dispositions, William A. Bauer May 2010

The Ontology Of Pure Dispositions, William A. Bauer

Department of Philosophy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This dissertation defends and develops the thesis that some instances, or tokens, of dispositional properties are pure. A pure disposition has no causal basis in any further properties beyond the disposition. A causal basis typically consists of some set of properties underlying a disposition that enables the disposition to manifest when stimulated in the appropriate circumstances. For example, a vase is fragile because it is disposed to break when a hammer or other suitable object strikes it, where the causal basis for fragility is the underlying micro-structure of the vase. Moreover, micro-structural properties of the vase seem to anchor the …

Tactics For Identifying And Eliminating Tritrichomonas Foetus From Infected Beef Herds, Jeff D. Ondrak May 2010

Tactics For Identifying And Eliminating Tritrichomonas Foetus From Infected Beef Herds, Jeff D. Ondrak

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The protozoan, Tritrichomonas foetus (TF), has been recognized as a cause of bovine infertility for more than 100 years (Skirrow and BonDurant, 1988). As an obligate parasite of the bovine reproductive tract its control and eradication seems achievable (Harding, 1950). However, this disease continues to trouble United States cattle producers and a recent epidemic in the Western US has lead to increased interest in research and regulatory efforts (Cima, 2009). Outbreak investigations were carried out on three Nebraska ranches to assess the efficiency of currently available diagnostic tests, culture, gel polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and real time PCR (rtPCR), in …

Pretreatments And Energy Potentials Of Appalachian Hardwood Residues For Biofuel Production, Adebola Bamikole Adebayo May 2010

Pretreatments And Energy Potentials Of Appalachian Hardwood Residues For Biofuel Production, Adebola Bamikole Adebayo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Continuous increase in crude oil price and environmental issues related to toxic emissions from the use of petroleum products has necessitated the need to find an alternative renewable source of energy in woody biomass. Accordingly, properties, chemical pretreatments, and enzymatic hydrolysis of logging residues to fermentable sugars were evaluated in this study. Logging residue specimens of yellow-poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) and red oak (Quercus rubra) were collected from fifteen previously harvested sites across West Virginia and then analyzed for their physical, chemical, and thermal properties. Results indicated that logging residues of yellow-poplar and red oak were dried in nature to a …

Alterations In Hepatic Enzyme Activity And Progesterone Clearance In Lactating Dairy Cows, Caleb Owens Lemley May 2010

Alterations In Hepatic Enzyme Activity And Progesterone Clearance In Lactating Dairy Cows, Caleb Owens Lemley

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In the cow, inadequate concentrations of progesterone during gestation may lead to an abrupt termination of pregnancy. The primary organ involved in progesterone catabolism is the liver, which contains an abundance of cytochrome P450 isozymes (CYP; EC 1.14.14.1) and aldo-keto reductases (AKR; EC 1.1.1.145-151), which are involved in the first phase of steroid inactivation, before second phase conjugation and excretion of the steroid metabolite by UDP-glucuronosyltransferases (UGT; EC 2.4.1.17). The objectives of the current experiments were to: (1) determine the effect of feeding two isoenergetic and isonitrogenous diets formulated to cause divergent insulin secretion, on hepatic progesterone catabolic enzyme activity …

Alterations In T Cell Function And Activation During Exposure To The Herbicide 3,4 Dichloropropionanilide (Dcpa) And Its Metabolites, Tricia L. Lewis

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Approximately 5.3 billion pounds of pesticides are applied annually across the United States and 15 of the top 25 most used pesticides are herbicides. Total herbicide use the in the United States represents 28% of all worldwide herbicide use. DCPA (3,4 dichloropropionanilide, common name propanil) is a post emergent herbicide that is used extensively for control against several broadleaf plants and grasses. It is the 17th most common herbicide in the United States and 6--9 million pounds are applied annually to 2 million acres of rice fields. In mammals, DCPA is metabolized in the liver and produces 3,4-dichloroaniline (DCA) and …

Stream Fish Metacommunity And Metapopulation Ecology In A Mined Appalachian Watershed, Roy Worth Martin May 2010

Stream Fish Metacommunity And Metapopulation Ecology In A Mined Appalachian Watershed, Roy Worth Martin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Chapter one is a direct empirical evaluation of metacommunity theory using stream fishes in a heavily mined and least impaired region of the Monongahela River basin. Metacommunity ecology, a new multi-scale paradigm, has provided important insights into mechanisms controlling regional patterns of assemblage structure. Metacommunity ecology offers four competing hypothetical models---neutral, patch dynamic, species sorting, and mass effect---each differing slightly in its underlying mechanistic framework.;Our results overwhelmingly supported the mass effect metacommunity model, which suggests that regional patterns of diversity are maintained by local habitat heterogeneity and dispersal among local assemblages. However, our findings also indicated that natural communities are …

Conservation And Ecology Of The Yellow-Blotched Sawback (Graptemys Flavmaculata), William Winsyl Selman Ii

Dissertations

The role of species conservation is becoming increasingly important due to the mounting pressures from humans on habitats and populations of organisms. This is particularly evident in riverine ecosystems throughout the world where the human demand for freshwater resources is increasing, and consequently, the number of imperiled aquatic organisms is also growing. The seven chapters of this dissertation primarily focus on the Yellow-blotched Sawback, Graptemys flavimaculata, an endangered riverine turtle that is endemic to the Pascagoula River system of southeast Mississippi, USA. At the population level, we aimed to study the impacts of Hurricane Katrina on two study populations within …

Impact Of Golf Video Games On Teaching Golf In Physical Education, Ann Pohira-Vieth May 2010

Impact Of Golf Video Games On Teaching Golf In Physical Education, Ann Pohira-Vieth

Dissertations

Although technology has become an integral part of many classrooms across the country, the incorporation of technology through the use of video games in physical education is also becoming a mainstay in multiple school districts. In West Virginia public schools, Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) has entered the physical education classrooms as a way to help curb obesity (“Study Shows Video,” 2008). Schools in Arkansas, Missouri and Hawaii have also followed suit by adding DDR to the physical education curriculum (Gallaway & Lauson, 2006). Even though the incorporation of video games into educational programs is becoming more prevalent, there is a …

The Natural Provenance: Ecoliteracy In Higher Education In Mississippi, Sarah Elizabeth Wheeless May 2010

The Natural Provenance: Ecoliteracy In Higher Education In Mississippi, Sarah Elizabeth Wheeless

Dissertations

Researchers have suggested that there is an increasing apathy in the study of natural history both in academic settings and in the scientific community (Schmidly, 2005). Natural history is the cornerstone of ecological literacy. However, most studies of environmental knowledge do not directly address knowledge of local natural history. Instead, they concern knowledge of human environmental issues, environmental concepts, or broad ecological knowledge. Ecoliteracy established the study of natural history as fundamental to environmental knowledge and seeks to determine levels of knowledge of local environments and factors associated with that knowledge (Pilgrim et al., 2007).

This study investigated ecoliteracy in …

This study compares one scholastic semester without a laboratory and another scholastic semester offering a laboratory in partnership with the traditional lecture. The students without a laboratory were examined by means of their final grades in comparison with the laboratory and lecture combination. In order to acquire perspectives on the impact the laboratory had on student learning a …

Topological Visualization Of Tensor Fields Using A Generalized Helmholtz Decomposition, Lierong Zhu May 2010

Topological Visualization Of Tensor Fields Using A Generalized Helmholtz Decomposition, Lierong Zhu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Analysis and visualization of fluid flow datasets has become increasing important with the development of computer graphics. Even though many direct visualization methods have been applied in the tensor fields, those methods may result in much visual clutter. The Helmholtz decomposition has been widely used to analyze and visualize the vector fields, and it is also a useful application in the topological analysis of vector fields. However, there has been no previous work employing the Helmholtz decomposition of tensor fields. We present a method for computing the Helmholtz decomposition of tensor fields of arbitrary order and demonstrate its application. The …

Killing Us Sweetly: How To Take Industry Out Of The Fda, Jason Iuliano May 2010

Killing Us Sweetly: How To Take Industry Out Of The Fda, Jason Iuliano

Journal of Food Law & Policy

For more than a century, the Food and Drug Administration has claimed to protect the public health. During that time, it has actually been placing corporate profits above consumer safety. Nowhere is this corruption more evident than in the approval of artificial sweeteners. FDA leaders' close ties to the very industry they were supposed to be regulating present a startling picture. Ignoring warnings from both independent scientists and their own review panels, FDA decision makers let greed guide their actions. They approved carcinogenic sweeteners such as saccharin, aspartame, and sucralose while simultaneously banning the natural herb stevia because it would …

Splitting Scales: Conflicting National And Regional Attempts To Manage Commercial Aquaculture In The Exclusive Economic Zone, Brandee Ketchum May 2010

Splitting Scales: Conflicting National And Regional Attempts To Manage Commercial Aquaculture In The Exclusive Economic Zone, Brandee Ketchum

Journal of Food Law & Policy

Like other environmental resources subject to public use, various interest groups struggle over joint management of scarce fisheries resources. Further, differing goals for resource management, such as financial goals versus conservation goals, frequently pit regional groups against one another. In some cases, regional interests may conflict with overall national interests. As goes the water and the air, so go the fish.

Not Cool: The Consequences Of Mandatory Country Of Origin Labeling, Matt Mullins May 2010

Not Cool: The Consequences Of Mandatory Country Of Origin Labeling, Matt Mullins

Journal of Food Law & Policy

The much anticipated and hotly debated Country-of-Origin Labeling (COOL) provision of the 2002 Farm Bill went into effect on September 30, 2008. The interim final rule published on August 1, 2008 finally put into law a provision first passed in the 2002 farm bill. This provision requires grocery stores and other retailers who sell food products to the private consumer to label certain meats, vegetables, fruits, and nuts with their country of origin. Foods that must be labeled are identified in the bill as "covered commodities." But, for all of the covered commodities, there exists a substantial list of products …

Avian Piscivores As Vectors For Myxobolus Cerebralis In The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, Todd M. Koel, Billie L. Kerans, Scott C. Barras, Katie C. Hanson, John S. Wood

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Myxobolus cerebralis, the cause of whirling disease in salmonids, has dispersed to waters in 25 states within the USA, often by an unknown vector. Its incidence in Yellowstone cutthroat trout Oncorhynchus clarkii bouvieri within the highly protected environment of Yellowstone Lake, Yellowstone National Park, is a prime example. Given the local abundances of piscivorous birds, we sought to clarify their potential role in the dissemination of M. cerebralis. Six individuals from each of three bird species (American white pelican Pelecanus erythrorhynchos, double-crested cormorant Phalacrocorax auritus, and great blue heron Ardea herodias) were fed known-infected or …
