Rural Research Brief: Vertical Teaming: K-12 Teachers Engaged In Scientific Research In Rural Settings, Penny J. Gilmer May 2010

Rural Research Brief: Vertical Teaming: K-12 Teachers Engaged In Scientific Research In Rural Settings, Penny J. Gilmer

The Rural Educator

Improving the knowledge and skills of practicing K-12 science teachers is our challenge. By doing so, teachers bring a renewed understanding and excitement for science to classrooms and can pass along their enhanced skills and growing expertise to their K-12 students. yet, many K-12 teachers, particularly those in rural areas, find themselves isolated from other scientists and science educators and often have scares resources for experiments and other classroom activities. . . . .This study explores the outcomes of a form of experiential professional development in science education for rural educators that involved teachers working in multi-grade level teams on …

Water Resources In Sub-Saharan Africa: The Case Of Mali, Ria Elise O'Brien May 2010

Water Resources In Sub-Saharan Africa: The Case Of Mali, Ria Elise O'Brien

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The world is experiencing the first effects of the water crisis and its importance will become more prevalent in the next few decades. In this study, the case is made that there are steps that can be taken that can improve the standard of living for people by addressing the water needs of both rural and urban areas affected by the water crisis. If the standard of living was increased using the advice given in the thesis, Mali would then serve as an example for what could be done right in other arid areas.

Cell Culture Models Of Genetic Variation, Joshua T. Witten May 2010

Cell Culture Models Of Genetic Variation, Joshua T. Witten

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Studying genetic variation presents a dilemma. While the genetic variation of greatest interest is that causing variation in traits and disease risk in natural populations, natural populations have characteristics that make them challenging to study. In this work, I have assessed the use of cell culture methods as a solution to some of these challenges. In particular, I studied genetic variation in the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae that was generated by selection in the lab as a model for natural genetic variation. I have found that even simplistic selection programs in the laboratory, including the use of chemical mutagenesis to …

Re-Annotation Is An Essential Step In Systems Biology Modeling Of Functional Genomics Data., Bart H.J. Van Den Berg, Fiona M. Mccarthy, Susan J. Lamont, Shane C. Burgess May 2010

Re-Annotation Is An Essential Step In Systems Biology Modeling Of Functional Genomics Data., Bart H.J. Van Den Berg, Fiona M. Mccarthy, Susan J. Lamont, Shane C. Burgess

CVM Publications

One motivation of systems biology research is to understand gene functions and interactions from functional genomics data such as that derived from microarrays. Up-to-date structural and functional annotations of genes are an essential foundation of systems biology modeling. We propose that the first essential step in any systems biology modeling of functional genomics data, especially for species with recently sequenced genomes, is gene structural and functional re-annotation. To demonstrate the impact of such re-annotation, we structurally and functionally re-annotated a microarray developed, and previously used, as a tool for disease research. We quantified the impact of this re-annotation on the …

Individuals Differences In Exploratory Behavior Of Prairie Voles, Microtus Ochrogaster, Danielle N. Lee May 2010

Individuals Differences In Exploratory Behavior Of Prairie Voles, Microtus Ochrogaster, Danielle N. Lee

Dissertations

Individual differences in behavior are significant because they serve as the substrate for natural selection. Within the Behavioral Syndromes framework, researchers study individual differences in behavior of animals. Behavioral Syndromes are defined as correlations between behaviors in different environmental contexts or testing situations. In this study, I examined the effects of litter size and sex ratio, familial relationships, and age and sex on exploratory behavior of prairie voles, Microtus ochrogaster. Exploratory behavior, defined as spontaneous behavioral responses to unfamiliar stimuli, was examined in three novel situations: an open-field with novel objects, a two-way novel choice apparatus, and a complex maze. …

Numerical Simulation Of Unsteady Hydrodynamics In The Lower Mississippi River, Mallory Davis May 2010

Numerical Simulation Of Unsteady Hydrodynamics In The Lower Mississippi River, Mallory Davis

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Alterations along the Mississippi River, such as dams and levees, have greatly reduced the amount of freshwater and sediment that reaches the Louisiana coastal area. Several freshwater and sediment diversions have been proposed to combat the associated land loss problem. To aid in this restoration effort a 1-D numerical model was calibrated, validated, and used to predict the response of the river to certain stimuli, such as proposed diversions, channel closures, channel modifications, and relative sea level rise. This study utilized HEC-RAS 4.0, a 1-D mobile-bed numerical model, which was calibrated using a discharge hydrograph at Tarbert Landing and a …

Molecular Probes For Biologically Important Molecules: A Study Of Thiourea, Hydroxyl Radical, Peroxynitrite And Hypochlorous Acid, Sourav Chakraborty

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Numerous chemical species are important to the health of biological systems. Some species can be beneficial at low doses and harmful at high doses. Other species are highly reactive and trigger serious cell damage. Improved methods to detect the presence and activity of such species are needed. In this work, several biologically important species were studied using appropriate analytical techniques. Fluoride is an important species in human physiology. It strengthens teeth and gives protection against dental caries. However, elevated concentrations of fluoride in the body can lead to health problems such as dental and skeletal fluorosis. Reported fluoride sensors used …

The Embedded American Artist, Jason Edward Chaffin

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

As our world ramps up the speed of its connections, our identities merge with increasing speed and angles of confluence. Not only are new identities created, but also the more fringe social and cultural elements of our world are exposed to mainstream consciousness. My work is a product of my own fringe background (namely its sheer breadth of experiences not normally visited upon a single person's life). My aim is to add variables to our social and cultural speed of combination and new variety by creating work that is derived from my own experiences to speak to those who are …

Earthbound Humors: An Ecocritical Approach To Melancholy In As You Like It And Hamlet, Angela Brown May 2010

Earthbound Humors: An Ecocritical Approach To Melancholy In As You Like It And Hamlet, Angela Brown

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Ecocriticism explores the way in which artists interact with, interpret and represent the natural world. The concept of “nature,” according to ecocriticism, goes beyond simply flora and fauna, extending to human nature as well. In Shakespeare's England, a person's nature was determined by his bodily humors, so the melancholy humor particularly lends itself to an ecocritical approach because it is inextricably linked to the natural world. Transcending genre, melancholy is not limited to the green world of comedy but rather appears in tragedy as well. In As You Like It, the melancholy Jaques offers a foil for the forest teeming …

Floating Bath Houses: Public Health And Recreation For The Working Class In Nineteenth-Century New Orleans, Christina Offutt May 2010

Floating Bath Houses: Public Health And Recreation For The Working Class In Nineteenth-Century New Orleans, Christina Offutt

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

One seemingly lost aspect of working-class life in antebellum New Orleans stems from the effort of entrepreneurs to provide bathing and swimming facilities for the city's working poor. In exchange for a relatively inexpensive fee per use, working-class New Orleanians served as the customer base for “floating pools” moored along the Mississippi riverfront. Beginning in 1836, these pools represented a transitional phase between the long extant tradition of bathing and swimming for free in the river and the development of commercialized, waterfront pleasure resorts for the masses in the late 1800s. Close proximity of working class neighborhoods to the river …

Red Drum (Sciaenops Ocellatus) Habitat Use In An Urban System; Behavior Of Reintroduced Fish In Bayou St. John, New Orleans, Sunny Brogan May 2010

Red Drum (Sciaenops Ocellatus) Habitat Use In An Urban System; Behavior Of Reintroduced Fish In Bayou St. John, New Orleans, Sunny Brogan

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Bayou St. John is a degraded water-body located within the City of New Orleans and is the focus of restoration efforts. I tested the ability of reintroduced red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) to survive in this system and assessed their habitat use and behavior. I tracked 29 red drum fitted with external acoustic radio transmitters to determine if they could survive the degraded habitats and determine their general dispersion within the Bayou. All 29 tagged red drum exhibited post-stocking movement (i.e., survival) and occurred primarily in the northern section of the Bayou (nearest Lake Pontchartrain). To assess habitat use and behavior …

Synthesis And Sar Study Of Meperidine Analogues As Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (Ssris), Xiaobo Gu

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Meperidine has been shown to have potent binding affinity for serotonin transporters (SERT) (Ki = 41 nM) and be an inhibitor of serotonin reuptake. Based upon these pharmacological results meperidine has been identified as a lead compound for the development of a novel class of serotonin-selective reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). A variety of potent analogues of meperidine have been synthesized and evaluated in vitro as potential ligands for the serotonin transporter. Substitutions have been made on the aryl ring, the ester moiety and the piperidine nitrogen of meperidine. Potent analogues of the aryl substituted series that included 4-iodophenyl, 2-naphthyl, 3,4-dichlorophenyl and …

Identification And Characterization Of A Second Wolfram Syndrome Gene, Sami Amr May 2010

Identification And Characterization Of A Second Wolfram Syndrome Gene, Sami Amr

Theses and Dissertations

Wolfram Syndrome (WFS) is a debilitating autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by juvenile onset insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (DM) and optic atrophy (OA) as well as a number of neurological and endocrine complications that result in early death due to respiratory complications. Previous research has mapped Wolfram syndrome to chromosome 4p16.1 and the disease has been attributed to mutations in the WFS1 gene affecting the WFS1 protein (wolframin), an ER membrane glycoprotein that plays an important role in the unfolded protein response (UPR) and in intracellular Ca2+ homeostasis. An additional locus for WFS on chromosome 4q22-24 was identified by linkage …

Opioid Addiction And Pregnancy: Potential Effects Of Substitution Therapies On Developmental Myelination, Andrew Eschenroeder May 2010

Opioid Addiction And Pregnancy: Potential Effects Of Substitution Therapies On Developmental Myelination, Andrew Eschenroeder

Theses and Dissertations

While most cells of the central nervous system (CNS) express opioid receptors, the role of the endogenous opioid system in CNS development remains poorly understood. Identification of opioid functions during brain maturation is particularly crucial in light of the increasing trend in opioid abuse and the use of opioid drugs during pregnancy. New substitution therapies in pregnant opioid addicts include buprenorphine, a mu opioid receptor partial agonist and kappa opioid receptor antagonist. However, while clinical studies demonstrated buprenorphine efficacy in reducing neonatal withdrawal symptoms, there is a lack of information on the potential effects of this drug on brain development. …

Examining The Interface Between Alcohol Expectancies, Psychophysiological Reactivity To Alcohol Picture Cues, And Risk For Substance Use Disorders, Ashlee C. Carter May 2010

Examining The Interface Between Alcohol Expectancies, Psychophysiological Reactivity To Alcohol Picture Cues, And Risk For Substance Use Disorders, Ashlee C. Carter

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The study examined the overlap between cognitive and affective measures of alcohol expectancies as they related to risk for developing alcohol use disorders. It was hypothesized that cognitive-based, paper-and-pencil measures and appetitive psychophysiological reactivity to alcohol cues would correlate and independently correlate to drinking behavior in a sample of college drinkers. It was also hypothesized that genetic risk would impact the relationship between upstream and downstream expectancy measures, given that children of alcoholics displayed blunted reactivity to appetitive cues.

A sample of 137 college drinkers (67 males; mean age = 20.23 ± 1.61) reporting a range of drinking behavior (mean …
