Vascular Plants Of The High Sierra San Pedro Mártir, Baja California, Mexico: An Annotated Checklist, Robert F. Thorne, Reid V. Moran, Richard A. Minnich

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

The Sierra San Pedro Mártir (SSPM) is the highest mountain range in Baja California, Mexico, the summit of Picacho del Diablo peak attaining 3095 meters. An annotated checklist describes the vascular flora of the SSPM high country, defined here as above 1800 m. It comprises almost 500 species in 251 genera and 78 families. The high country is dominated by coniferous forest species known from montane California and Arizona whose southern ranges terminate in the SSPM. The annotated checklist identifies 453 species in 236 genera as indigenous, of which 23 species and one variety are endemic to the SSPM. Over …

Reduction Of Sympathetic Activity Via Adrenal-Targeted Grk2 Gene Deletion Attenuates Heart Failure Progression And Improves Cardiac Function After Myocardial Infarction., Anastasios Lymperopoulos, Giuseppe Rengo, Erhe Gao, Steven N. Ebert, Gerald W. Dorn, Walter J. Koch

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Chronic heart failure (HF) is characterized by sympathetic overactivity and enhanced circulating catecholamines (CAs), which significantly increase HF morbidity and mortality. We recently reported that adrenal G protein-coupled receptor kinase 2 (GRK2) is up-regulated in chronic HF, leading to enhanced CA release via desensitization/down-regulation of the chromaffin cell alpha(2)-adrenergic receptors that normally inhibit CA secretion. We also showed that adrenal GRK2 inhibition decreases circulating CAs and improves cardiac inotropic reserve and function. Herein, we hypothesized that adrenal-targeted GRK2 gene deletion before the onset of HF might be beneficial by reducing sympathetic activation. To specifically delete GRK2 in the chromaffin cells …

High Amino Acid Diversity And Positive Selection At A Putative Coral Immunity Gene (Tachylectin-2), Marshall L. Hayes, Ron I. Eytan, Michael E. Hellberg

Faculty Publications

Background. Genes involved in immune functions, including pathogen recognition and the activation of innate defense pathways, are among the most genetically variable known, and the proteins that they encode are often characterized by high rates of amino acid substitutions, a hallmark of positive selection. The high levels of variation characteristic of immunity genes make them useful tools for conservation genetics. To date, highly variable immunity genes have yet to be found in corals, keystone organisms of the world's most diverse marine ecosystem, the coral reef. Here, we examine variation in and selection on a putative innate immunity gene from Oculina, …

Signaling Pathways Coupled To Melatonin Receptor Mt1 In Gastric Smooth Muscle, Rashad Ahmed May 2010

Signaling Pathways Coupled To Melatonin Receptor Mt1 In Gastric Smooth Muscle, Rashad Ahmed

Theses and Dissertations

The Melatonin, a close derivative of serotonin, is involved in physiological regulation of circadian rhythms. In the gastrointestinal (GI) system, melatonin exhibits endocrine, paracrine and autocrine actions and is implicated in the regulation of GI motility. Generally, melatonin actions oppose the stimulatory actions of serotonin on motility. However, it is not known whether melatonin can also act directly on GI smooth muscle cells. The aim of the present study was to determine the expression of melatonin receptors in smooth muscle and identify their signaling pathways. Muscle cells were isolated from rabbit distal stomach by enzymatic digestion, filtration and centrifugation and …

Evaluation Of Freshwater Mussel Conservation Strategies At Multiple Scales: Macro-Molecules,Behavior, Habitat, And Policy., Andrew J. Peck May 2010

Evaluation Of Freshwater Mussel Conservation Strategies At Multiple Scales: Macro-Molecules,Behavior, Habitat, And Policy., Andrew J. Peck

Student Theses and Dissertations

Freshwater mussels are the second most imperiled taxonomic group in North America. In the United States, the most threatened mussel species receive special protection under the Endangered Species Act, among others, which requires implementation of a conservation action strategy to ameliorate potential impacts to protected populations and their habitats. This dissertation evaluates the response of freshwater mussels, through condition indicators, individual behavior, and community metrics, to conservation strategies. The first strategy evaluated is the effect of relocation on an endangered mussel species, Potamilus capax (Green 1832). As relocation requires identification of safe harbor habitats, a methodology is proposed to identify …

The Nomenclatural Status Of Ten Names In The Genus Pieris (Lepidoptera: Pieridae), Crispin S. Guppy, Norbert G. Kondla

The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

The nomenclatural status of ten names in the genus Pieris are reviewed. The dates and locations of publication of pseudobryoniae Verity, 1908 and adalwinda Fruhstorfer, 1909 are corrected; they are infrasubspecific unavailable names. The names pseudobryoniae Barnes and McDunnough, 1916 and arctica Barnes and McDunnough, 1916 are newly identified as available species-group names with at least four and six syntypes respectively. A lectotype of pseudobryoniae Barnes and McDunnough is selected, with the type locality being Nulato, Alaska; browni Eitschberger, 1983 is a subjective synonym. A lectotype of arctica Barnes and McDunnough is designated, with the type locality being northern Norway. …

The Nhanes Iii Database: Design And A Retrospective Study To Identify Associations Between Vitamin D And Hypertension, Brandon J. Marzullo

Theses

The results from government surveys are often available wholly or in part to the general public. However the format of this information is not always optimal for distribution or analysis, the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III, NHANES III, is one such example. This survey is released as data sets containing a Statistical Analysis Software (SAS) program, a column delimited data file, and documentation. This limits access to the data by requiring a license to read in and query the data. By taking the data in its available format and parsing it into a MySQL database the wealth of …

The Clinical Utility Of Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing In Patients With Suspected Myocardial Ischemia, Sherry Pinkstaff May 2010

The Clinical Utility Of Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing In Patients With Suspected Myocardial Ischemia, Sherry Pinkstaff

Theses and Dissertations

Heart disease is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States with coronary artery disease (CAD) representing more than half of all cardiovascular events. Stable patients presenting with symptoms suggestive of CAD are likely to undergo either an exercise ECG and/or imaging study as a first line diagnostic assessment. A cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPX) is an ECG stress test plus ventilatory gas analysis. Recently CPX has been used to detect exercise-induced myocardial ischemia suggestive of underlying CAD. Currently there are a number of diagnostic tests available for the identification of CAD with the most widely used being …

Verbal Disputes And The Internalism/Externalism Debate In Epistemology, John M. Fraiser May 2010

Verbal Disputes And The Internalism/Externalism Debate In Epistemology, John M. Fraiser

Theses

Looking at those debates which are commonly regarded as verbal disputes we can detect two kinds of verbal disputes: (STDC) cases in which disputing parties apply the Same Term or phrase to Different Concepts; (DTSC) cases in which disputing parties apply Different Terms or phrases to the Same Concept. While cases of (STDC) or (DTSC) may be verbal disputes, I will argue that (STDC) and (DTSC) are neither necessary nor sufficient conditions for a verbal dispute. I will explore the identity of a verbal dispute, the conditions for its occurrence, and methods for detecting it. I develop a condition for …
