“Some Of Them, They Do Right; Some Of Them, They Do Wrong”: Moral Ambiguity And The Criteria For Help Among Street Sex Workers, Jill Mccracken Jun 2010

“Some Of Them, They Do Right; Some Of Them, They Do Wrong”: Moral Ambiguity And The Criteria For Help Among Street Sex Workers, Jill Mccracken

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

Debates surrounding criminalization and legalization are often polarized and occur without including the experiences and expertise of street workers. This article places street sex workers at the center of this conversation and offers perspectives on how these women can “get help” in the context of a system that criminalizes sex work. Drawing on an ethnographic study conducted in a large city in the southwestern United States, I rhetorically analyze how street workers talk about these issues, which brings to the surface the contradictions and complicated existence of sex work while providing insights into how these systems might be rehabilitated.

Negotiating Contradictory Expectations: Stories From ‘Secret’ Sex Workers In Andhra Pradesh, Annie George Jun 2010

Negotiating Contradictory Expectations: Stories From ‘Secret’ Sex Workers In Andhra Pradesh, Annie George

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

Drawing upon research in rural coastal Andhra Pradesh, this article analyzes sex workers’ negotiations of family and social life with their work in a highly stigmatized profession. Such women routinely described the double bind presented by their work, which simultaneously provides these relatively low status individuals with a sense of personal worth while exposing them to severe violence and stigma. Findings presented here accordingly document the processes by which sex workers collude with members of their social networks to purposefully foreground their actions as “good” woman and to underplay or even hide their sex work.

Soulful Voices: Birds, Language And Prophecy In Amazonia, Harry Walker Jun 2010

Soulful Voices: Birds, Language And Prophecy In Amazonia, Harry Walker

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

This paper explores the significance of human-bird interactions among Peruvian Urarina, focusing on bird speech and its relation to concepts of voice, power and prophecy. It suggests that while the potential status of birds as subjects remains complex and uncertain, this very ambiguity has stimulated the development and refinement of more abstract ideas of meaning, language, and what it means to be human. The ways in which bird sounds signify is not simply arbitrary, but rather indexical or analogic, leading to the impression of a privileged access to reality and a powerful claim to truth. Together with their vocal transparency …

Copyright And The First Amendment: Comrades, Combatants, Or Uneasy Allies?, Joseph P. Bauer Jun 2010

Copyright And The First Amendment: Comrades, Combatants, Or Uneasy Allies?, Joseph P. Bauer

Washington and Lee Law Review

The copyright regime and the First Amendment seek to promote the same goals. Both seek the creation and dissemination of more, better, and more diverse literary, pictorial, musical and other works. But, they use significantly different means to achieve those goals. The copyright Laws afford to the creator of a work the exclusive right to reproduce, distribute, transform, and perform that work for an extended period of time. The First Amendment, on the other hand, proclaims that Congress "shall make no Law... abridging the freedom of speech or of the press, " thus at least nominally indicating that limitations on …

Evaluating Ecosystem Response To Oyster Restoration And Nutrient Load Reduction With A Multispecies Bioenergetics Model, Richard S. Fulford, Denise L. Breitburg, Mark Luckenbach, Roger I.E. Newell

Faculty Publications

Many of the world's coastal ecosystems are impacted by multiple stressors each of which may be subject to different management strategies that may have overlapping or even conflicting objectives. Consequently, management results may be indirect and difficult to predict or observe. We developed a network simulation model intended specifically to examine ecosystem-level responses to management and applied this model to a comparison of nutrient load reduction and restoration of highly reduced stocks of bivalve suspension feeders (eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica) in an estuarine ecosystem (Chesapeake Bay, USA). Model results suggest that a 50% reduction in nutrient inputs from the watershed …

Gender And Health: A Social Movement’S Agenda For Big Pharma, Margaret Grieco Jun 2010

Gender And Health: A Social Movement’S Agenda For Big Pharma, Margaret Grieco

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

Social movements have an important new campaigning and organizing competence in new information communication technologies. These technologies also enable the members of social movements to readily research the accuracy of information: knowledge becomes globalized and readily accessible. In relation to Big Pharma, women’s social movements and social movements of the medicated intersect, and there is now a substantial challenge to Big Pharma both within developed and developing countries from the terrain of gender and health. This paper documents those challenges and looks towards their consequences in the future both in respect of Big Pharma but also in terms of 'academic' …

Development Towards A Protocol To Test For The Creation Of A “Diabetic” Environment In A Blood Vessel Mimic, Kaitlyn Kirk, Development Towards A Protocol To Test For The Creation Of A “Diabetic” Environment In A Blood Vessel Mimic

Biomedical Engineering

Diabetes mellitus affects a huge proportion of people; about 6% of the population in the US had diabetes in 2007 (16). Diabetes promotes dyslipidemia, an imbalance in the circulating levels of lipids and lipoproteins, and diabetes is one of the leading risk factors for coronary artery and peripheral vascular diseases (11, 51, 52).  There are two types of diabetes; type 1 diabetes accounts for about 10% of diagnosed cases and type 2 accounts for about 90% (11).  Diabetic patients react differently to stents and there is a great need to enhance the treatment.  The goal of this project was, and …

The Sexual Marketing Of Eastern European Women Through Internet Pornography, Karina Beecher Jun 2010

The Sexual Marketing Of Eastern European Women Through Internet Pornography, Karina Beecher

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Since the split of the Soviet Union, sexuality in Eastern Europe has developed a new direction in the growth of the sex industry on the Internet. Pornographic images of Eastern European women are internationally available through the Internet. This research analyzes how Russian and Ukrainian women are sexually marketed through Internet pornography. The Internet provides such images of women for economic purposes. The Internet advertises these women and their bodies as sexually available, and suggests that women's bodies have an economic value. These images help contribute to the sex industry by marketing these women as sexual objects and commodities. This …

Making The Grade In Memphis, Patrick J. Mccloskey Jun 2010

Making The Grade In Memphis, Patrick J. Mccloskey

Journal of Catholic Education

Catholic schools achieved the greatest social transformation in American history, pulling impoverished Irish immigrants out of the underclass and into the working and middle classes, writes Patrick McCloskey, author of The Street Stops Here —an account of a year in the life of a Catholic school in Harlem. These schools now provide a lifeline for disadvantaged, non-Catholic minorities in urban America, boosting graduation and college acceptance rates, and outperforming many equivalent public schools. But they are also disappearing from the very neighborhoods that need them most. McCloskey reports on how one diocese has bucked the trend, what it means to …

Prostaglandin E(2) Is Crucial In The Response Of Podocytes To Fluid Flow Shear Stress., Tarak Srivastava, Ellen T. Mccarthy, Ram Sharma, Patricia A. Cudmore, Mukut Sharma, Mark L. Johnson, Lynda F. Bonewald Jun 2010

Prostaglandin E(2) Is Crucial In The Response Of Podocytes To Fluid Flow Shear Stress., Tarak Srivastava, Ellen T. Mccarthy, Ram Sharma, Patricia A. Cudmore, Mukut Sharma, Mark L. Johnson, Lynda F. Bonewald

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Podocytes play a key role in maintaining and modulating the filtration barrier of the glomerulus. Because of their location, podocytes are exposed to mechanical strain in the form of fluid flow shear stress (FFSS). Several human diseases are characterized by glomerular hyperfiltration, such as diabetes mellitus and hypertension. The response of podocytes to FFSS at physiological or pathological levels is not known. We exposed cultured podocytes to FFSS, and studied changes in actin cytoskeleton, prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) production and expression of cyclooxygenase-1 and-2 (COX-1, COX-2). FFSS caused a reduction in transversal F-actin stress filaments and the appearance of cortical actin …

Evaluating Captive-Breeding Techniques And Reintroduction Success Of The California Condor (Gymnogyps Californianus), Amy C. Utt Jun 2010

Evaluating Captive-Breeding Techniques And Reintroduction Success Of The California Condor (Gymnogyps Californianus), Amy C. Utt

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In this dissertation, I present two original research studies on the behavior and survival of the critically endangered California Condor (Gymnogyps californianus). I also provide a comprehensive review of the role of captive-rearing to the conservation of birds.

The first study examined the behavioral differences of puppet- and parent-reared condor juveniles reared in captivity. This study further defined and examined the behaviors of adult conspecific mentors and their interactions with juveniles. Dominance hierarchy analyses for two cohorts of juveniles and their adult mentors indicated the establishment of a linear hierarchy. Although puppet-reared juveniles engaged in fewer social behaviors in …

Association Between Obesity, Depression, And Inflammation Among Seventh-Day Adventists In The Biopsychosocial Religion And Health Study, Michael Paalani Jun 2010

Association Between Obesity, Depression, And Inflammation Among Seventh-Day Adventists In The Biopsychosocial Religion And Health Study, Michael Paalani

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The effects of obesity and depression on morbidity and mortality may be mediated by inflammatory processes. Homeostasis within the immune system depends on a balance of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokine molecules, so chronic inflammatory diseases may result from cytokine dysregulation. The target population consisted of 508 Seventh Day Adventists (SDAs) who participated in the Biopsychosocial Religion and Health Study (BHRS), a sub-study of the Adventist Health Study-2. The study was a cross-sectional analysis of the association between obesity, depression, and inflammation after controlling for demographic, socioeconomic, health behavioral, and health status variables among BHRS participants.

Obesity was assessed by body …

Because of their role in mediating life-history trade-offs, hormones are expected to be strongly associated with components of fitness; however, few studies have examined how natural selection acts on hormonal variation in the wild. In a songbird, the dark-eyed junco (Junco hyemalis), field experiments have shown that exogenous testosterone alters individuals' resolution of the survival-reproduction trade-off, enhancing reproduction at the expense of survival. Here we used standardized injections of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) to assay variation in the testosterone production of males. Using measurements of annual survival and reproduction, we found evidence of strong natural selection acting on GnRH-induced …

The Interaction Of Roles, Resources, And Organizational Structures In Creative Work, Feichin, Ted Tschang Jun 2010

The Interaction Of Roles, Resources, And Organizational Structures In Creative Work, Feichin, Ted Tschang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Creativity is known to be located at both the individual and group levels. We look at the case of videogame development, as an instance of project level creativity. We focus in particular on the design of the artifact. By examining the loci of creativity at the individual and group levels, we shed light on the roles and tasks of the designer, and on the organizational group structure known as the design cabal. In comparing the two extremes, we discover that the lack of organizational resources (namely, well known designers) leads in certain projects to the adoption of cabals or cabal-like …

The Need For Effective Visual Communication: How Website Design Can Further The Success Of The Cal Poly Women’S Lacrosse Team, Bonnie J. Burtis Jun 2010

The Need For Effective Visual Communication: How Website Design Can Further The Success Of The Cal Poly Women’S Lacrosse Team, Bonnie J. Burtis

Journalism

This paper argues that an efficient and successfully built website is crucial to the future success of college sports websites. By focusing on the Cal Poly Women’s Lacrosse team and its website, visual communication research gives insight into what works and what does not. The fundamental and design elements examined include: text elements, site navigation, accessible links, presence of news, communication and graphics (visual design). These are the elements that promote success and efficiency. Compared to other websites built and maintained by teams in the women’s lacrosse league, Cal Poly’s lacks foundational website material. General website research proves this and …

Cervical Vascular And Upper Airway Asymmetry In Velo-Cardio-Facial Syndrome: Correlation Of Nasopharyngoscopy With Mra, Avi G. Oppenheimer, Susan Fulmer, Keivan Shifteh, Ja-Kwei Chang, Allan Brook, Alan L. Shanske, Robert J. Shprintzen Jun 2010

Cervical Vascular And Upper Airway Asymmetry In Velo-Cardio-Facial Syndrome: Correlation Of Nasopharyngoscopy With Mra, Avi G. Oppenheimer, Susan Fulmer, Keivan Shifteh, Ja-Kwei Chang, Allan Brook, Alan L. Shanske, Robert J. Shprintzen

Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

Purpose

Velo-cardio-facial syndrome (VCFS), the most common genetic syndrome causing cleft palate, is associated with internal carotid and vertebral artery anomalies, as well as upper airway asymmetry. Medially displaced internal carotid arteries, often immediately submucosal, present a risk of vascular injury during pharyngeal flap surgery for velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI). We evaluate the frequency and spectrum of cervical vascular anomalies in a large cohort of VCFS patients correlating MRA with nasopharyngolaryngoscopy in detecting at risk carotid arteries. Furthermore, we assess the relationship with respect to laterality between cervical vascular patterns and the asymmetric abnormalities of these subjects’ upper airways.

Methods

Cervical …
