Evaluating User Modality Preference Effect On Cognitive Load In A Multimedia, Justin V. Scott Jun 2010

Evaluating User Modality Preference Effect On Cognitive Load In A Multimedia, Justin V. Scott

Purdue Polytechnic Masters Theses

Meaningful learning is defined as a deep understanding of the material, which includes attending to important aspects of the presented material, mentally organizing it into a coherent cognitive structure, and integrating it with relevant existing knowledge (Mayer & Moreno, 2003). Mayer and Moreno (2003) defines multimedia learning as learning from words and pictures, and multimedia instruction as presenting words and pictures that are intended to foster learning. The emergence of numerous learning style models over the past 25 years has brought increasing attention to the idea that students learn in diverse ways and that one approach to teaching does not …

Alternative Trans-Splicing Of Caenorhabditis Elegans Sma-9/Schnurri Generates A Short Transcript That Provides Tissue-Specific Function In Bmp Signaling, Jianghua Yin, Ling Yu, Cathy Savage-Dunn Jun 2010

Alternative Trans-Splicing Of Caenorhabditis Elegans Sma-9/Schnurri Generates A Short Transcript That Provides Tissue-Specific Function In Bmp Signaling, Jianghua Yin, Ling Yu, Cathy Savage-Dunn

Publications and Research

Background Transcription cofactors related to Drosophila Schnurri facilitate the transcriptional programs regulated by BMP signaling in C. elegans, Drosophila, Xenopus, and mouse. In different systems, Schnurri homologs have been shown to act as either agonists or antagonists of Smad function, and as either positive or negative regulators of transcription. How Schnurri proteins achieve this diversity of activities is not clear. The C. elegans sma-9/schnurri locus undergoes alternative splicing, including an unusual trans-splicing event that could generate two non-overlapping shorter transcripts.

Results We demonstrate here that the shorter transcripts are expressed in vivo. Furthermore, we find that one of the short …

Organellar Dna Polymerases Gamma I And Ii In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Jeffrey M. Brammer Jun 2010

Organellar Dna Polymerases Gamma I And Ii In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Jeffrey M. Brammer

Theses and Dissertations

Plants have two organelles outside the nucleus which carry their own DNA, mitochondria and chloroplasts. These organelles are descendants of bacteria that were engulfed by their host according to the endosymbiotic theory. Over time, DNA has been exchanged between these organelles and the nucleus. Two polymerases, DNA Polymerases Gamma I and II, are encoded in the nucleus and remain under nuclear control, but are transported into the mitochondria and chloroplasts. DNA polymerases gamma I and II are two organelle polymerases which have been studied through sequence analysis and shown to localize to both mitochondria and chloroplasts. Little has been done …

Días Inolvidables (Cápitulo 1-1) [9th-12th Grade], Carol Arnold

Understanding by Design: Complete Collection

This unit was designed utilizing the Realidades 3 Textbook from Prentice Hall for a Spanish 3 level class. I also included some differentiation for Spanish 3 Pre-AP along with supplemental activities at the end of the unit. The goal of the unit was to have students investigate in an authentic manner the positive and negative effects of tourism on Spanish-speaking countries.

Throughout their investigations, students are exposed to and expected to use the preterite and imperfect tense in a real-world context through camping and tourism. One of the other goals of the unit is to have students create a presentation …

You Are Unique /Tú Eres Único [9th-12th Grade], Jennifer Falcon, Jodi Ingersoll

Understanding by Design: Complete Collection

Identity is a question that we are all faced with. Students struggle with this question as it is one that is multi-faceted and is ever changing. Adolescence is a time in which the opinions of our self as well as that of others can change on a daily basis.

In the Spanish curriculum the idea of identity or knowing who you are is begun in beginning level and continues to develop in the upper level coursework. The purpose of this unit is to transform the novice understanding of identity into an understanding of grammatical concepts, vocabulary, and a deeper understanding …

Loss In Joyce’S Dubliners [11th-12th Grade], Lauren Lee

Understanding by Design: Complete Collection

This unit, written for a primarily senior college preparatory English Literature class, uses several short stories from James Joyce’s Dubliners to focus on the thematic idea of loss, grief, and coping to build on students’ understanding of research, creative writing, discussion, reading, making connections, and literary terms. At the unit’s conclusion, students will demonstrate their mastery of these skills and understandings in a Wikispace in which they conduct first-person research on a culture, as Joyce did, and emulate some of his creative writing skills to develop vignettes about that culture working independently or in groups. Some activities that will lead …

A Photogrammetry-Based Hybrid System For Dynamic Tracking And Measurement, Daniel P. Magree Jun 2010

A Photogrammetry-Based Hybrid System For Dynamic Tracking And Measurement, Daniel P. Magree

Theses and Dissertations

Noncontact measurements of lightweight flexible aerospace structures present several challenges. Objects are usually mounted on a test stand because current noncontact measurement techniques require that the net motion of the object be zero. However, it is often desirable to take measurements of the object under operational conditions, and in the case of miniature aerial vehicles (MAVs) and deploying space structures, the test article will undergo significant translational motion. This thesis describes a hybrid noncontact measurement system which will enable measurement of structural kinematics of an object freely moving about a volume. By using a real-time videogrammetry system, a set of …

Architectural Considerations For Single Operator Management Of Multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Gabriel T. Bugajski Jun 2010

Architectural Considerations For Single Operator Management Of Multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Gabriel T. Bugajski

Theses and Dissertations

Recently, small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) have become ubiquitous in military battlefield operations due to their intelligence collection capabilities. However, these unmanned systems consistently demonstrate limitations and shortfalls with respect to size, weight, range, line of sight and information management. The United States Air Force Unmanned Aircraft Systems Flight Plan 2009-2047 describes an action plan for improved UAS employment which calls out single operator, multi-vehicle mission configurations. This thesis analyzes the information architecture using future concepts of operations, such as biologically-inspired flocking mechanisms. The analysis and empirical results present insight into the engineering of single-operator multiple-vehicle architectures.

Regulatory Mechanism Of Myeloid Derived Suppressor Cell Activity, Cesar Alexander Corzo Jun 2010

Regulatory Mechanism Of Myeloid Derived Suppressor Cell Activity, Cesar Alexander Corzo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC) are a major component of the immune suppressive network that develops during cancer. MDSC down-regulate immune surveillance and antitumor immunity and facilitate tumor growth. The ability of MDSC to suppress T cell responses has been documented; however the mechanisms regulating this suppression remain to be understood. This work proposes a biological dichotomy of MDSC regulated by the tumor microenvironment. In peripheral lymphoid organs MDSC cause T-cell non-responsiveness that is antigen-specific. These MDSC have increased expression of NOX2, enabling them to produce large amounts of reactive oxygen species. Since the transcription factor STAT3 is substantially activated in …
