Site-Specific Effects On Respiratory Rhythm And Pattern Of Ibotenic Acid Injections In The Pontine Respiratory Group Of Goats, Joshua M. Bonis, Suzanne Neumueller, Katie L. Krause, T. Kiner, A. Smith, B. D. Marshall, B. Qian, Lawrence Pan, Hubert Forster

Physical Therapy Faculty Research and Publications

To probe further the contributions of the rostral pons to eupneic respiratory rhythm and pattern, we tested the hypothesis that ibotenic acid (IA) injections in the pontine respiratory group (PRG) would disrupt eupneic respiratory rhythm and pattern in a site- and state-specific manner. In 15 goats, cannulas were bilaterally implanted into the rostral pontine tegmental nuclei (RPTN; n = 3), the lateral (LPBN; n = 4) or medial parabrachial nuclei (MPBN; n = 4), or the Kölliker-Fuse nucleus (KFN; n = 4). After recovery from surgery, 1- and 10-μl injections (1 wk apart) of IA were made bilaterally through the …

Politics Of Pansies: D. H. Lawrence's Philosophical Vision Of Reform, Andrew Keese Jul 2010

Politics Of Pansies: D. H. Lawrence's Philosophical Vision Of Reform, Andrew Keese

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The primary purpose of this study was to reassess the usefulness of D. H. Lawrence's book of poetry called Pansies, especially regarding his political philosophy. Often dismissed as an inferior work, the poems lead to a greater understanding of Lawrence's political thinking. Due to the application of a new historical critical perspective, any stylistic objections to these highly experimental poems could be avoided. In order to achieve the understanding sought with new historicism, it was necessary to look at Lawrence's biographies and letters, as well as his other works, before attempting to interpret his poetry. The poems show that Lawrence …

Using Micro-Simulation To Evaluate Transit Signal Priority For Lrt Operations In A Downtown Environment, Faisal Mahmud Jul 2010

Using Micro-Simulation To Evaluate Transit Signal Priority For Lrt Operations In A Downtown Environment, Faisal Mahmud

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Transit Signal Priority or TSP is an operational strategy that facilitates the movement of transit vehicles such as buses, light rail or streetcars, through traffic-signal controlled intersections. The benefits of TSP operations include improved schedule adherence and improved transit travel times with minimal impact to normal traffic operations. New advances in Global Positioning Systems, detection and communication, and control strategies have helped overcome many problems with early systems and increased interest in implementing TSP for Light Rail Transit (LRT) and other transit operations. The increased capabilities of these advanced systems have led to a dramatic increase in operational and planned …

Carrion Beetles Of The Blackwater Ecologic Preserve: Community Structure Seasonal Patterns And Habitat Use, Amy L. Simons Jul 2010

Carrion Beetles Of The Blackwater Ecologic Preserve: Community Structure Seasonal Patterns And Habitat Use, Amy L. Simons

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Carrion beetles (Silphidae) are important in the decomposition of carcasses in ecosystems. Two subfamilies, Nicrophorinae and Silphinae, differ in reproductive behaviors. The Nicrophinae, burying beetles, bury small carcasses to serve as food for the adults and their offspring. The Silphinae oviposit near larger carcasses. There is intense competition among all carrion beetles and other carrion feeders for carcasses, and beetle species have evolved seasonal activity patterns that minimize competition, such as when they are active and when they reproduce. Northern Silphidae communities are more diverse than southern communities, probably due to increased competition for carrion in the south.

This research …

Nanoindentation Creep Analysis For A Spherical Indenter, Phani K. Praturi Jul 2010

Nanoindentation Creep Analysis For A Spherical Indenter, Phani K. Praturi

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this work is to determine the strain rate sensitivity of the hardness in indentation creep and to investigate the relationship between the strain rate sensitivity of the hardness vH and the strain rate sensitivity of the flow stress vCT. A finite element model of nanoindentation creep was constructed and a parametric analysis was performed using Abaqus/Standard analysis software. It is found that the ratio vH / vCT does not maintain a unique relation with HIE• and varies with the increase in the ratio of depth of penetration to the radius of the indenter a/ R . Simulations …

An Inverse Kinematic Mathematical Model Using Groebner Basis Theory For Arm Swing Movement In The Gait Cycle, Kimberly D. Kendricks, Adam M. Fullenkamp, Robert Mcgrellis, Jonathan Juhl, Ronald F. Tuttle Jul 2010

An Inverse Kinematic Mathematical Model Using Groebner Basis Theory For Arm Swing Movement In The Gait Cycle, Kimberly D. Kendricks, Adam M. Fullenkamp, Robert Mcgrellis, Jonathan Juhl, Ronald F. Tuttle

Faculty Publications

Two important indicators in the gait cycle: arm swing and foot placement, when isolated, provide key information about future behaviors in the gait cycle. Through video captured data, the INSPIRE (Integration of a Sensor Package for Identifying Radical Extremists) project seeks to identify gait characteristics in arm and leg swing movement to recognize threatening individuals. In particular, one approach discussed in this paper uses Groebner Basis Theory to model arm swing movement in the gait cycle. Through inverse kinematics, joint configurations of the shoulder and elbow are found to place the wrist at a specific position and orientation in the …

Evidence suggests that physical activity (PA) is associated with the maintenance of cognitive function across the lifespan. In contrast, the apolipoproteinE-ε4 (APOE-ε4) allele, a genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD), is associated with impaired cognitive function. The objective of this study was to examine the interactive effects of PA and APOE-ε4 on brain activation during memory processing in older (ages 65–85) cognitively intact adults. A cross-sectional design was used with four groups (n = 17 each): (1) Low Risk/Low PA; (2) Low Risk/High PA; (3) High Risk/Low PA; and (4) High Risk/High PA. PA level was based on …

Faculty Publications

Many organophosphorus (OP) based compounds are highly toxic and powerful inhibitors of cholinesterases that generate serious environmental and human health concerns. Organothiophosphates with a thiophosphoryl (P=S) functional group constitute a broad class of these widely used pesticides. They are related to the more reactive phosphoryl (P=O) organophosphates, which include very lethal nerve agents and chemical warfare agents, such as, VX, Soman and Sarin. Unfortunately, widespread and frequent commercial use of OP-based compounds in agricultural lands has resulted in their presence as residues in crops, livestock, and poultry products and also led to their migration into aquifers. Thus, the design of …

Mollusk Species At A Pliocene Shelf Whale Fall (Orciano Pisano, Tuscany), S Danise, S Dominici, U Betocchi

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The recovery of an intact, 10 m long fossil baleen whale from the Pliocene of Tuscany (Italy) offers the first opportunity to study the paleoecology of a fully developed, natural whale-fall community at outer shelf depth. Quantitative data on mollusk species from the whale fall have been compared with data from the sediments below and around the bones, representing the fauna living in the muddy bottom before and during the sinking of the carcass, but at a distance from it. Although the bulk of the fauna associated with the fossil bones is dominated by the same heterotrophs as found in …

Situational Analysis Of Household Energy And Biomass Use And Associated Health Burden Of Indoor Air Pollution And Mitigation Efforts In Pakistan, Zafar Fatmi, Asma Rahman, Ambreen Kazi, Muhammad Masood Kadir, Nalini Sathiakumar

Community Health Sciences

Biomass fuel burning leads to high levels of suspended particulate matter and hazardous chemicals in the indoor environment in countries where it is in common use, contributing significantly to indoor air pollution (IAP). A situational analysis of household energy and biomass use and associated health effects of IAP was conducted by reviewing published and un-published literature about the situation in Pakistan. In addition to attempt to quantify the burden of ill health due to IAP, this paper also appraises the mitigation measures undertaken to avert the problem in Pakistan. Unfortunately, IAP is still not a recognized environmental hazard in Pakistan …

Scientometric Study Of Doctoral Dissertations In Biochemistry In The University Of Kerala, India, K.G. Pillai Sudhier, V. Dileep Kumar

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Biochemistry is the most fascinating subject as it deals with the chemical language of life. The ultimate goal of biochemistry is to describe the phenomena that distinguish living from non-living in the language of chemistry and physics. Researchers in biochemistry use specific techniques native to biochemistry, but increasingly combine these with techniques and ideas from genetics, molecular biology and biophysics. In India at present around 75,000 students are enrolled in research and nearly 11,000 are awarded PhDs every year, of which 50 percent are from science and technology disciplines. Theses and dissertations reflect the scholarly communication process. Scientometrics and citation …

Assessing The Export Competitiveness Of Chinese Industries, Marc Fetscherin, Ilan Alon, James P. Johnson

Faculty Publications

This article presents a framework for measuring, illustrating and comparing industry export competitiveness that takes into account (i) industry specialization, (ii) industry export growth rate and (iii) relative industry size. We apply the framework to a data set of 97 different industries from China over a 5-year period (2001–2005). According to our results, over 70 per cent of Chinese industries are ‘dynamic’, meaning that their export growth is higher than the world average export growth. Almost 50 per cent of the Chinese industries examined are competitive in global markets, with 20–25 per cent of the world export market share in …

The Decontamination Of Methamphetamine Labs - A Search For Best Practices, Robert Perry Jun 2010

The Decontamination Of Methamphetamine Labs - A Search For Best Practices, Robert Perry

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

The use of methamphetamine as a drug of abuse in the United States has skyrocketed in recent years, with much of the drug being manufactured in primitive makeshift laboratories clandestinely located in residential dwellings. The contamination of these environments with methamphetamine, its precursors, and its by-products can be severe. Often, after being contaminated, these dwellings are re-occupied by people unaware of the former use as a methamphetamine production site, and unaware of the contaminant load they now find themselves living in. This paper discusses the extent of contamination of the lab area and how this contaminant loading may affect the …

Identification Of Markers Associated With Sow Lifetime Productivity For Whole Genomic Selection, Daniel Ciobanu Jun 2010

Identification Of Markers Associated With Sow Lifetime Productivity For Whole Genomic Selection, Daniel Ciobanu

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Sows are more productive today than ever before. However, concurrent with increased prolificacy, high sow death losses and replacement rates are serious economic and welfare issues facing producers. Reproductive failure is the most frequent reason for culling sows. Length of productive life is moderately heritable and has high variance; thus, substantial genetic variation is expected to exist in most populations. Genetic improvement in the swine industry occurs from selection in nucleus herds and is then transmitted through the breeding pyramid in the multiplication process. Thus, it is critical to identify selection methods that can be applied in nucleus herds that …

Rapid Multi-Class Multi-Residue Method For The Confirmation Of Chloramphenicol And Eleven Nitroimidazoles In Milk And Honey By Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry, Mark Cronly, Patrice Behan, Barry Foley, Liam Regan, Sheila Martin, Michael Doyle, Edward Malone

Articles

A confirmatory method has been developed to allow for the analysis of eleven nitroimidazoles and also chloramphenicol in milk and honey samples. These compounds are classified as A6 compounds in annex IV of council regulation 2377/90 and therefore prohibited for the use in animal husbandry. Milk samples are extracted by acetonitrile with addition of NaCl, while honey samples are first dissolved in water before a similar extraction. Honey extracts undergo a hexane wash to remove impurities. Both milk and honey extracts are evaporated to dryness and reconstituted in initial mobile phase. These are then injected onto an LC-MS/MS system and …
