Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications
Reduced brain levels of docosahexaenoic acid (C22:6n-3), a neurotrophic and neuroprotective fatty acid, may contribute to cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease. Here, we investigated whether the liver enzyme system that provides docosahexaenoic acid to the brain is dysfunctional in this disease. Docosahexaenoic acid levels were reduced in temporal cortex, mid-frontal cortex and cerebellum of subjects with Alzheimer's disease, compared to control subjects (P = 0.007). Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores positively correlated with docosahexaenoic/α-linolenic ratios in temporal cortex (P = 0.005) and mid-frontal cortex (P = 0.018), but not cerebellum. Similarly, liver docosahexaenoic acid content was lower in Alzheimer's …

Community-Based Adaptation: Lessons From The Development Marketplace 2009 On Adaptation To Climate Change, Rasmus Heltberg, Radhika Prabhu, Habiba Gitay
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
The Development Marketplace 2009 focused on adaptation to climate change. This paper identifies lessons from the Marketplace and assesses their implications for adaptation support. Our findings are based on: statistical tabulation of all proposals; in-depth qualitative and quantitative analysis of the 346 semi-finalists; and interviews with finalists and assessors. Proposals were fuelled by deep concerns that ongoing climate change and its impacts undermine development and exacerbate poverty, migration and food insecurity. Proposals addressed both local poverty and climate change challenges, and offered a wide range of approaches to render local development more resilient to current climate variability. Therefore, support to …

Environmental Disturbance Of Oligotrophic Bacteria And Effects On Water Quality In Deep Karstic Pools, Andrea Hunter
Environmental Disturbance Of Oligotrophic Bacteria And Effects On Water Quality In Deep Karstic Pools, Andrea Hunter
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
Active intervention of humans in pristine water resource environments has caused both surface and ground waters to degrade in quality and natural purification capacity (Geldreich 1996). Groundwater is often considered to be less impacted than that of surface water due to the absence of climate changes and storm water migrations (Geldreich 1996). Shallow karstic limestone areas (less than 30 m deep) have a greater change of surface contamination since surface water runoff can rapidly percolate through areas lacking a protective bedrock layer.

Selecting Glp-1 Agonists In The Management Of Type 2 Diabetes: Differential Pharmacology And Therapeutic Benefits Of Liraglutide And Exenatide., J Pinkney, T Fox, L Ranganath
Selecting Glp-1 Agonists In The Management Of Type 2 Diabetes: Differential Pharmacology And Therapeutic Benefits Of Liraglutide And Exenatide., J Pinkney, T Fox, L Ranganath
Peninsula Medical School
Failure of secretion of the incretin hormone glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) plays a prominent role in type 2 diabetes, and restoration of GLP-1 action is an important therapeutic objective. Although the short duration of action of GLP-1 renders it unsuited to therapeutic use, 2 long-acting GLP-1 receptor agonists, exenatide and liraglutide, represent a significant advance in treatment. In controlled trials, both produce short-term glucose-lowering effects, with the reduction in hemoglobin A(1c) of up to 1.3%. These responses are often superior to those observed with additional oral agents. However, unlike sulfonylureas, thiazolidinediones, or insulin, all of which lead to significant weight gain, …

Effect Of Some Species Of Bacteria On Viability Of Human Hydatid Cysts, Ismail Abdel –Wahab Al –Hadithi, Maisam Balasm Al-Khamesi, Mushtak Talib Al-Ouqaili
Baghdad Science Journal
A total of 50 fertile human hydatid cases {33(66%) females and (34%) males}, obtained from Al-Ramadi public Hospital during the period from December 2003 to July 2004 were examined to study any bacterial infections. The specimens were obtained from hydatid fluid and then cultured on appropriate culture media to distinguish some species of bacteria which resulted in obtaining: Staphylococcus aureus (18%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa(12%), Escherichia coli(6%) and Streptococcus pneumonia (4%). These bacteria were confirmed by isolation from interacyst fluid and blood culture technique. The possible routs of infection may be through blood, biliary ducts and bronchioles .The selectivity permeable of the …

Removal Of Zinc Ions From Industrial Wastewater With Wool Fibers, Ayad H. Jassim, Salwa Shamran Jassim, Ammar W. Ahmed
Baghdad Science Journal
In this research, the efficiency of low-cost unmodified wool fibers were used to remove zinc ion from industrial wastewater. Removal of zinc ion was achieved at 99.52% by using simple wool column. The experiment was carried out under varying conditions of (2h) contact time, metal ion concentration (50mg/1), wool fibers quantity to treated water (70g/1), pH(7) & acid concentration (0.05M). The aim of this method is to use a high sensitive, available & cheep natural material which applied successfully for industrial wastewater& synthetic water, where zinc ion concentration was reduced from (14.6mg/l) to (0.07mg/l) & consequently the hazardous effect of …

Improving Requirements Elicitation By Leveraging The Discipline Of Screenwriting, Albert Gardella
Improving Requirements Elicitation By Leveraging The Discipline Of Screenwriting, Albert Gardella
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
As the field of Engineering has expanded, researchers and practitioners have shown increasing interest in the role of high quality Requirements Engineering (RE) in the System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and its impact in determining project success. Traditionally, the literature has been dominated by an effort to establish a wider acceptance of the scenario based approach. New ideas, however, are emerging within the past decade which shows researchers presenting various ways that narrative storytelling might be applied to the scenario based approach. This project contributes to the latest wave of literature that looks at narrative and the scenario based approach …

Can A Scalable System Be Built To Capture Web Page Thumbnails?, Feras Hirzalla
Purdue Polytechnic Masters Theses
Hirzalla, Feras M. M.S., Purdue University, December 2010, Can a Scalable
System be Built to Capture Web Page Thumbnails? Major Professor: John
Springer.
Screenshots of web pages are a novel user interface improvement that
can be used in various systems. Several software packages can be used to
generate a visual representation of a web page, but none of these packages are
designed to capture web pages in a scalable way.
The goal of this research is to build and test a web page thumbnailer that
can simultaneously capture screenshots of multiple web pages using multiple
threads, thus maximizing the throughput …
