Foraging Strategies Are Related To Skull Morphology And Life History Traits Of Melanerpes Woodpeckers, David L. Leonard Jr., Julie A. Heath
Foraging Strategies Are Related To Skull Morphology And Life History Traits Of Melanerpes Woodpeckers, David L. Leonard Jr., Julie A. Heath
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Links between morphology and foraging strategies have been well established for many vertebrate groups. Foraging strategies of Melanerpes woodpeckers are especially variable, with at least six species being proficient flycatchers; the remainder of the better known species do not flycatch. Our objective was to examine variation in foraging tactics as it relates to skull morphology and other life history traits among these species to better understand the biology of these diverse woodpeckers. We measured eight skull characters from 241 individuals representing 19 species, but focused on eight species for which we had the most data. We used the log-geometric mean …
Continuity And Change In The Eastern Aleutian Archaeological Sequence, Richard S. Davis, R. A. Knecht
Continuity And Change In The Eastern Aleutian Archaeological Sequence, Richard S. Davis, R. A. Knecht
Anthropology Faculty Research and Scholarship
The eastern Aleutian prehistoric archaeological sequence is key for understanding population movements, cultural exchanges, and adaptations to environmental changes over a wide area of the north Pacific and Bering Sea during the Holocene. An important question is, Can the settlement history of the eastern Aleutians be understood as a single continuous tradition lasting some 9,000 years, or were there major population and cultural influxes along with periods of widespread population abandonment? We review the available archaeological evidence with reference to recent mtDNA and nucleic DNA studies of prehistoric and contemporary Arctic and Subarctic populations and conclude that the evidence points …

Analysis Of The Detection Of Organophosphate Pesticides In Aqueous Solutions Using Polymer-Coated Sh-Saw Devices, Arnold Kweku Mensah-Brown
Analysis Of The Detection Of Organophosphate Pesticides In Aqueous Solutions Using Polymer-Coated Sh-Saw Devices, Arnold Kweku Mensah-Brown
Dissertations (1934 -)
Organophosphate pesticides (OPs) have been found as contaminants in surface and ground waters, soil, and agricultural products. Because OPs are toxic compounds, rapid detection/monitoring of OPs in groundwater is necessary to allow for real-time remediation. Detection of OPs in water has already been demonstrated using poly(epichlorohydrin) [PECH] and polyurethane as the sensing layers. However, the response times were relatively long, hindering real-time monitoring. In this work, a hybrid organic/inorganic chemically sensitive layer [bisphenol A-hexamethyltrisiloxane (BPA-HMTS)] that shows a high degree of partial selectivity for OPs is synthesized, characterized (in terms of the glass transition temperature, Tg, water stability, …

Securities Law In The Roberts Court: Agenda Or Indifference?, Adam C. Pritchard
Securities Law In The Roberts Court: Agenda Or Indifference?, Adam C. Pritchard
Law & Economics Working Papers
Historically, securities law has not been a high priority for the Supreme Court. The first five years of the Roberts Court, however, suggest an upsurge of interest in the federal securities laws, with nine cases decided, a significant increase from the Rehnquist Court’s average. These numbers are deceptive. Analysis of the opinions deciding these cases – and more importantly, the issues debated by the justices – suggests that the Court is not interested in the substance of the securities laws or the policies that animate them. Instead, securities law serves as a backdrop for debates over statutory interpretation and the …

Review Of Reopening The Frontier: Homesteading In The Modern West By Brian Q. Cannon, Benjamin T. Arrington
Review Of Reopening The Frontier: Homesteading In The Modern West By Brian Q. Cannon, Benjamin T. Arrington
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Brian Q. Cannon has established himself as one of America's preeminent historians of agriculture and the modern West. Reopening the Frontier will only add to this well-deserved reputation. In it, he examines the rejuvenation of western homesteading- the idea of the federal government providing cost-free land to settlers willing to live on and cultivate it-after World War II. As Cannon demonstrates, the challenges of homesteading in 1950s Washington or Oregon were often just as severe as those of trying to "prove up" a claim in 1870s Nebraska or Kansas.
Review Of Nicholas Black Elk: Medicine Man, Missionary, Mystic By Michael F. Steltenkamp, Dale Stover
Review Of Nicholas Black Elk: Medicine Man, Missionary, Mystic By Michael F. Steltenkamp, Dale Stover
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
In Nicholas Black Elk: Medicine Man, Missionary, Mystic, Michael Steltenkamp explains that because of his chance acquaintance with Black Elk's daughter, Lucy Looks Twice, who "wanted people to know about his [Black Elk's] life as a catechist, I became the biographer of his life in the twentieth century." The author claims that his earlier book, Black Elk: Holy Man of the Oglala (1993), which reports Lucy's version of her father's life, "showed how this otherwise stereo typically Plains Indian medicine man assumed a Christian identity, and how this was the religious legacy for which he was most remembered within …

Review Of The Girl In Saskatoon: A Meditation On Friendship, Memory And Murder By Sharon Butala, Susan Maher
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
On a warm May evening in 1962, young Saskatoon resident Alexandra Wiwcharuk left her flat to mail some letters and enjoy a little time on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River before reporting in for her night shift as a nurse at City Hospital. Sitting near a weir, she was within sight of a parking area and city streets. Many others were out that evening, sharing Alex's delight in heat and late sun on a holiday weekend, walking the paths, laughing over jokes and shared gossip, watching children play, and soaking in the city scene. But none of them …
Wish List Wilderness Endgame In The Black Hills National Forest, Robert Wellman Campbell
Wish List Wilderness Endgame In The Black Hills National Forest, Robert Wellman Campbell
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
In January 1979 Dave Foreman loosened his tie, propped his cowboy boots up on his desk, and brooded awhile on RARE II. In a second try at Roadless Area Review and Evaluation (RARE), the u.s. Forest Service had just spent two years deciding once and for all how much of its undeveloped land should be designated Wilderness. To Foreman, a Washington executive of the Wilderness Society, RARE II tasted of bitter defeat, and he lonesomely "popped the top on another Stroh's" as he brooded. The Forest Service had just recommended increasing its Wilderness acres from 18 million to 33 million, …

The Expression Patterns Of Minor Fibrillar Collagens During Development In Zebrafish, Ming Fang, Jason S. Adams, B. Lane Memahhan, Raquel J. Brown, Julia Oxford
Biomedical Research Institute Publications and Presentations
Minor fibrillar collagens are recognized as the organizers and nucleators during collagen fibrillogenesis but likely serve additional functions. The minor fibrillar collagens include collagens type V and type XI. Mutations of collagen type V and XI can cause Ehlers Danlos, Stickler's, and Marshall's syndromes in human. We have characterized the spatiotemporal expression patterns of Col11a1, Col11a2, Col5a1 as well as Col5a3 in zebrafish embryos by in situ hybridization. Col5a1 is expressed in developing somites, neural crest, the head mesenchyme, developing cranial cartilage, pharyngeal arches and vertebrae. Col5a3 is detected in the notochord, mesenchyme cells in the eyes and lens. Both …
From Pseudoscience To Protoscience: Estimating Human Trafficking And Modern Forms Of Slavery, Amanda J. Gould
From Pseudoscience To Protoscience: Estimating Human Trafficking And Modern Forms Of Slavery, Amanda J. Gould
Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Human Trafficking: 2nd (2010)
Scholars and authors in the field of human trafficking and modern slavery are quick to note the problem of estimating the number of victims. Their works are usually devoid of an appropriate explanation, though, of why there is a problem. Many recognise victims are part of a hidden population and know that they cannot simply be counted. From this they assume that estimates are inherently unreliable. The problem here is not that there are only estimates, but that the estimates are based on either faulty grounds or no apparent methodology at all. Estimation techniques are common in many fields including …
A Revised Approach To Reducing Labor Abuses And Human Trafficking, Thomas Reuland
A Revised Approach To Reducing Labor Abuses And Human Trafficking, Thomas Reuland
Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Human Trafficking: 2nd (2010)
In this paper, I challenge current efforts to combat human trafficking. Trafficking is a problem that the law has difficulty preventing, in part, because of market forces. Moreover, the structure of many corporations responds to these market forces, implicates these enterprises in human trafficking, and encourages members of a company to remain complacent in the face of human rights abuses. As corporations strive to increase profit margins on each product they make, they demand low-cost labor and commodify the human beings who satisfy that demand. Meanwhile, branding provides a powerful tool that corporations use to prevent the consumer from recognizing …
