Age And Amount Of Experience On Children’S Representations Of Repeated Events, Una Glisic
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The current study examined how children’s event representations changed with increasing experience with an event. There were 81 children (40 4-to-5-year-olds, and 41 7-to-8-year-olds) who participated in either 2 (n = 41) or 4 (n = 40) repeated event sessions, which consisted of activities such as playing a counting game, and/or doing a puzzle. Event sessions included three different item types; variable items (which changed at every occurrence), fixed items (which stayed constant throughout the event), and new items (which only occurred once throughout the series). Children were interviewed 5-7- days following their last event session using free-recall, …
Distribution Of Stamped Dressel 20 Amphorae Produced At Axati In Roman Baetica: A Quantitative Study Of Olive Oil Consumption Levels At Military And Civilian Sites, Ryan Hughes
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The Roman province of Baetica in southern Spain produced vast amounts of olive oil during the first three centuries CE. The small town of Axati is situated in an area now known as Lora del Rio along the Baetis River, the modern Guadalquivir. This town exported large amounts of olive oil which was distributed throughout the Roman Empire from northern Britain to Alexandria. This study will look at the stamped olive oil amphorae, Dressel 20 type, which were produced there and transported throughout the Empire. The distribution and consumption levels evidenced by these stamped amphorae are quantified here in order …
Tundra Snow Cover Properties From In-Situ Observation And Multi-Scale Passive Microwave Remote Sensing, Andrew Rees
Tundra Snow Cover Properties From In-Situ Observation And Multi-Scale Passive Microwave Remote Sensing, Andrew Rees
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Tundra snow cover is important to monitor as it influences local, regional, and global scale surface water balance, energy fluxes, and ecosystem and permafrost dynamics. Moreover, recent global circulation models (GCM) predict a pronounced shift in high latitude winter precipitation and mean annual air temperature due to the feedback between air temperature and snow extent. At regional and hemispheric scales, the estimation of snow extent, snow depth and, snow water equivalent (SWE) is important because high latitude snow cover both forces and reacts to atmospheric circulation patterns. Moreover, snow cover has implications on soil moisture dynamics, the depth, formation and …

Textualist Canons: Cabining Rules Or Predilective Tools, Stephen M. Durden
Textualist Canons: Cabining Rules Or Predilective Tools, Stephen M. Durden
Campbell Law Review
This Article uses canons of construction to demonstrate that textualism, particularly plain language or plain meaning textualism, cannot be applied without the use of non-textual personal choices. But, this Article does not seek to demonstrate that interpreting the Constitution requires ignoring the text of the Constitution; nor does this Article seek to demonstrate that textualist approaches lack relevance or value. Rather, this Article seeks to demonstrate that textualism cannot create rules that avoid personal predilections and does not create neutral principles or eliminate predilective interpretation. In order to accomplish this goal, this Article reviews a variety of canons of construction …

Analysis And Occurrence Of Disinfection By-Products In Fresh And Salt Water, Honglan Shi
Doctoral Dissertations
"Haloacetic acids, trihalomethanes, and bromate are important toxic water disinfection by-products (DBPs) that the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) regulates in drinking water. Iodoacetic acids and halonitromethanes (HNMs) are the unregulated emerging DBPs that have been recently found in the disinfected drinking waters, and which have much higher toxicity than the regulated DBPs. The purpose of this study was to develop new analytical methods for analysis of these emerging DBPs, to study their occurrence in Missouri drinking water systems, and to investigate the occurrence and formation of these DBPs in saltwater and seawater based marine park aquaria. A new rapid …
Biologically Inspired Sensing And Mimo Radar Array Processing, Murat Akcakaya
Biologically Inspired Sensing And Mimo Radar Array Processing, Murat Akcakaya
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
The contributions of this dissertation are in the fields of biologically inspired sensing and multi-input multi-output: MIMO) radar array processing. In our research on biologically inspired sensing, we focus on the mechanically coupled ears of the female Ormia ochracea. Despite the small distance between its ears, the Ormia has a remarkable localization ability. We statistically analyze the localization accuracy of the Ormia's coupled ears, and illustrate the improvement in the localization performance due to the mechanical coupling. Inspired by the Ormia's ears, we analytically design coupled small-sized antenna arrays with high localization accuracy and radiation performance. Such arrays are essential …

Perception And Nonconceptual Apprehension, Arnon Cahen
Perception And Nonconceptual Apprehension, Arnon Cahen
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
My dissertation articulates and resolves a problem at the heart of debates about how perception guides our actions and deliberations. The problem arises from the independent plausibility but mutual inconsistency of the following theses: * Some perceptions provide us reasons * Only belief-like states provide us reasons * No perception is belief-like I argue that this problem is deeper than has been acknowledged. Simply rejecting any one thesis leads to serious challenges. Nonetheless, I argue that we can unravel the link between having reasons and having belief-like states in a way that explains the initial plausibility of the first thesis. …
The Hematopoietic Compartment Regulates Osteoblast Differentiation And Apoptosis During Cytokine Treatment, Matthew Christopher
The Hematopoietic Compartment Regulates Osteoblast Differentiation And Apoptosis During Cytokine Treatment, Matthew Christopher
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Adult hematopoiesis normally occurs in bone marrow, where hematopoietic stem cells: HSC) reside within a specialized microenvironment. At steady state, hematopoiesis state is regulated such that immature hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells: HSPC) are restricted to the bone marrow and are rarely observed in peripheral blood. Under certain circumstances, however, this regulation is loosened and significant numbers of HSPC are released to the circulation, a process termed "mobilization." Mobilization can be induced pharmacologically by a wide range of agents. Of these, the best characterized and most widely used mobilizing agent is Granulocyte-colony stimulating factor: G-CSF). G-CSF is widely used clinically …
Ionic Mechanisms Of Action Potential Rate Dependence, Conduction And Block In Normal Epicardium And In Remodeled Epicardium Post-Infarction, Keith Decker
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
In this work, detailed computational models are used to study the electrophysiology of normal epicardium and the arrhythmogenic effects of epicardial cell remodeling post-infarction. The canine epicardial myocyte model described here reproduces a wide range of experimentally observed rate dependent phenomena in cell and tissue. Model behavior depends on updated formulations for the 4-AP sensitive transient outward current: Ito1), the slow component of the delayed rectifier potassium current: IKs), the L-type Ca2+ channel: ICa,L) and the sodium-potassium pump: INaK) fit to data from canine ventricular myocytes. The model shows that Ito1 plays a limited role in potentiating peak ICa,L and …

P38 Phoshporylates Rb On Ser567 By A Novel, Cell Cycle-Independent Mechanism That Triggers Rb-Hdm2 Interaction And Apoptosis, Rachel Delston
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
The retinoblastoma protein: Rb) inhibits both cell division and apoptosis, but the mechanism by which Rb alternatively regulates these divergent outcomes remains poorly understood. Cyclin dependent kinases: Cdks) promote cell division by phosphorylating and reversibly inactivating Rb by a hierarchical series of phosphorylation events and sequential conformational changes. The stress-regulated mitogen activated protein kinase: MAPK) p38 also phosphorylates Rb, but it does so in a cell cycle-independent manner that is associated with apoptosis rather than with cell division. Here, we show that p38 phosphorylates Rb by a novel mechanism that is distinct from that of Cdks. p38 bypasses the cell …
Use-Dependent Plasticity Regulates Sleep Need In Drosophila Melanogaster, Jeffrey Donlea
Use-Dependent Plasticity Regulates Sleep Need In Drosophila Melanogaster, Jeffrey Donlea
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Although the necessary functions of sleep have not been identified, sleep has been shown to play an important role in the consolidation of memories. Recent studies have shown that, in addition to playing a strong role in sleep regulation, the circadian clock also influences processes associated with learning and memory. Thus, the neural circuits that control circadian rhythms are uniquely positioned to play an important role in coordinating interactions between sleep and memory. Drosophila melanogaster exhibit increased sleep following several days of social experience and require sleep to consolidate long-term memories: LTM) after Courtship Conditioning, an associative memory assay. We …
Local And Systemic Consequences Of Reducing Notch Signaling In Skin Keratinocytes, Shadmehr Demehri
Local And Systemic Consequences Of Reducing Notch Signaling In Skin Keratinocytes, Shadmehr Demehri
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Notch is a transmembrane receptor that mediates short-range signaling between neighboring cells. Notch signaling has been implicated in various cellular and developmental processes essential in the life of metazoans. Specifically, Notch signaling plays a critical role in mammalian skin. Removal of Notch alleles in skin keratinocytes has been associated with an array of phenotypes with varying severity based on the identity and number of remaining Notch receptors. Phenotypes include carcinogenesis: in the case of Notch1 loss), transformation of hair follicles to epidermal cysts and neonatal lethality, the latter seen in the absence of all Notch signaling. Although these phenotypes were …

Roles Of Inhibitory Interneurons In Cerebellar Cortical Processing For Oculomotor Control, Shane Heiney
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
The cerebellar cortex is usually offered up as the prime example of a well-worked out circuit; indeed, its basic neuronal composition and organization has been known for over one hundred years. Yet mysteries still abound about the computations that are performed within its layers, and how these computations contribute to sensation and behavior. This project was an effort to look inside the cerebellar cortical circuit during behavior to see if I could shed some light on the computations being performed. The dissertation is divided into three main sections. In the first, I present the results of preliminary work performed by …
The Role Of Pax6 In Lens Placode Formation, Jie Huang
The Role Of Pax6 In Lens Placode Formation, Jie Huang
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
THE ROLE OF PAX6 IN LENS PLACODE FORMATION by Jie Huang Washington University in St. Louis, 2010 Professor David Beeebe, Chairperson Although placodes are ubiquitous precursors of tissue invagination, the mechanism of placode formation and its importance for invagination are unclear. We tested the "restricted expansion hypothesis" of lens placode formation by conditionally deleting the transcription factor, Pax6, or the matrix component, Fn1. Deletion of Pax6 from the lens-forming ectoderm prevented placode formation without altering cell proliferation or volume. Pax6CKO ectoderm expanded, rather than being constrained to a constant area, as normally occurs during lens placode formation, and expressed lower …
Optical-Resolution Photoacoustic Microscopy, Song Hu
Optical-Resolution Photoacoustic Microscopy, Song Hu
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Optical microscopy, providing valuable biomedical insights at the cellular and organelle levels, has been widely recognized as an enabling technology. Mainstream optical microscopy technologies, including single-/multi-photon fluorescence microscopy and OCT, have demonstrated extraordinary sensitivities to fluorescence and optical scattering contrasts, respectively. However, the optical absorption contrast of biological tissues, which encodes essential physiological/pathological information, has not yet been fully assessable. The emergence of biomedical photoacoustics has led to a new branch of optical microscopy--OR-PAM. As a valuable complement to existing optical microscopy technologies, OR-PAM detects optical absorption contrasts with exquisite sensitivity: i.e., 100%). Combining OR-PAM with fluorescence microscopy or optical-scattering-based …

Characterization Of Streptolysin O As The Translocator For The Cytolysin-Mediated Translocation Process In Streptococcus Pyogenes, N'Goundo Magassa
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Secretion of toxins into host cells is an important component of microbial pathogenesis. In order to gain access to the host cell cytosol, toxins must cross the plasma membrane, traverse the membrane of endocytic vesicles, or cross the membrane of organelles. The process cytolysin-mediated translocation: CMT) in Streptococcus pyogenes uses the pore-forming protein streptolysin O: SLO) to translocate the S. pyogenes NAD+-glycohydrolase: SPN) effector into the cytosol of eukaryotic host cells. Although, the fundamentals of this protein translocation process are established the details of the mechanism remain elusive. The current studies illustrate that the translocation process is more complex than …

Electrospray Methodologies For Characterization And Deposition Of Nanoparticles, Luis Balam Modesto Lopez
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Electrospray is an aerosolization method that generates highly charged droplets from solutions or suspensions and, after a series of solvent evaporation - droplet fission cycles, it results in particles carrying multiple charges. Highly charged particles are used in a variety of applications, including particle characterization, thin film deposition, nanopatterning, and inhalation studies among several others. In this work, a soft X-ray photoionization was coupled with an electrospray to obtain monodisperse, singly charged nanoparticles for applications in online size characterization with electrical mobility analysis. Photoionization with the soft X-ray charger enhanced the diffusion neutralization rate of the highly charged bacteriophages, proteins, …

Dual-Modality Thermoacoustic And Photoacoustic Imaging, Manojit Pramanik
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Diagnosis of early breast cancer is the key to survival. The combined contrasts from thermoacoustic and photoacoustic tomography: TAT and PAT) can potentially predict early stage breast cancer. We have designed and engineered a breast imaging system integrating both thermoacoustic and photoacoustic imaging techniques to achieve dual-contrast: microwave and light absorption), non-ionizing, low-cost, high-resolution, three-dimensional breast imaging. We have also developed a novel concept of using a negative acoustic lens to increase the acceptance angle of an unfocused large-area ultrasonic transducer: detector), leading to more than twofold improvement of the tangential resolution in both TAT and PAT when the object …
The Mechanisms And Roles Of Neural Feedback Loops For Visual Processing, Debajit Saha
The Mechanisms And Roles Of Neural Feedback Loops For Visual Processing, Debajit Saha
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Feedback pathways are widely present in various sensory systems transmitting time-delayed and partly-processed information from higher to lower visual centers. Although feedback loops are abundant in visual systems, investigations focusing on the mechanisms and roles of feedback in terms of micro-circuitry and system dynamics have been largely ignored. Here, we investigate the cellular, synaptic and circuit level properties of a cholinergic isthmic neuron: Ipc) to understand the role of isthmotectal feedback loop in visual processing of red-ear turtles, Trachemys scripta elegans. Turtle isthmotectal complex contains two distinct nuclei, Ipc and Imc, which interact exclusively with the optic tectum, but are …
High-Speed Photoacoustic Microscopy In Vivo, Liang Song
High-Speed Photoacoustic Microscopy In Vivo, Liang Song
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
The overarching goal of this research is to develop a novel photoacoustic microscopy: PAM) technology capable of high-speed, high-resolution 3D imaging in vivo. PAM combines the advantages of optical absorption contrast and ultrasonic resolution for deep imaging beyond the quasi-ballistic regime. Its high sensitivity to optical absorption enables the imaging of important physiological parameters, such as hemoglobin concentration and oxygen saturation, which closely correlate with angiogenesis and hypermetabolism--two hallmarks of cancer. To translate PAM to the clinic, both high imaging speed and high spatial resolution are desired. With high spatial resolution, PAM can detect small structural and functional changes early; …
Pacemaker Heterogeneity In The Suprachiasmatic Nucleus: Origins And Network Implications, Alexis Webb
Pacemaker Heterogeneity In The Suprachiasmatic Nucleus: Origins And Network Implications, Alexis Webb
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
In mammals, the suprachiasmatic nuclei: SCN) in the ventral hypothalamus function as a circadian pacemaker, controlling daily rhythms in behavior and physiology. Together the SCN contain approximately 20,000 neurons that maintain rhythms in firing rate and gene expression. Previous studies led to the assumption that single SCN neurons are capable of self-sustained circadian rhythms. Whether and which SCN neurons can maintain cell-autonomous daily oscillations has not been extensively tested. We measured PERIOD2::LUCIFERASE expression in isolated SCN neurons over multiple days to determine if all SCN neurons were circadian. We then examined neuropeptide content of the recorded neurons. We found that …

Stroke is the leading cause of disability in the industrialized world. The disabilities caused by stroke can significantly impact the quality of daily life for stroke survivors. Studies show that a high number of daily body movement repetitions can help recover lost motor functionality. However, many stroke patients do not perform the home exercises needed to reach this high number of repetitions. Games for rehabilitation have been shown to provide motivation to perform home exercises. However, because stroke can leave survivors with different levels of disability, custom games are required. Creating custom games, though, is time consuming and requires advanced …
