Critical Oxygen Levels And Metabolic Suppression In Oceanic Oxygen Minimum Zones, Brad A. Seibel
Critical Oxygen Levels And Metabolic Suppression In Oceanic Oxygen Minimum Zones, Brad A. Seibel
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
The survival of oceanic organisms in oxygen minimum zones (OMZs) depends on their total oxygen demand and the capacities for oxygen extraction and transport, anaerobic ATP production and metabolic suppression. Anaerobic metabolism and metabolic suppression are required for daytime forays into the most extreme OMZs. Critical oxygen partial pressures are, within a range, evolved to match the minimum oxygen level to which a species is exposed. This fact demands that low oxygen habitats be defined by the biological response to low oxygen rather than by some arbitrary oxygen concentration. A broad comparative analysis of oxygen tolerance facilitates the identification of …

Tracking The Oxidative Kinetics Of Carbohydrates, Amino Acids And Fatty Acids In The House Sparrow Using Exhaled 13Co2, Marshall D. Mccue, O. Sivan, Scott R. Mcwilliams, B. Pinshow
Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications
Clinicians commonly measure the 13CO2 in exhaled breath samples following administration of a metabolic tracer (breath testing) to diagnose certain infections and metabolic disorders. We believe that breath testing can become a powerful tool to investigate novel questions about the influence of ecological and physiological factors on the oxidative fates of exogenous nutrients. Here we examined several predictions regarding the oxidative kinetics of specific carbohydrates, amino acids and fatty acids in a dietary generalist, the house sparrow (Passer domesticus). After administering postprandial birds with 20 mg of one of seven 13C-labeled tracers, we measured rates …

Emerging Vaccine Informatics, Yongqun He, Rino Rappuoli, Anne S. De Groot, Robert T. Chen
Institute for Immunology and Informatics Faculty Publications
Vaccine informatics is an emerging research area that focuses on development and applications of bioinformatics methods that can be used to facilitate every aspect of the preclinical, clinical, and postlicensure vaccine enterprises. Many immunoinformatics algorithms and resources have been developed to predict T- and B-cell immune epitopes for epitope vaccine development and protective immunity analysis. Vaccine protein candidates are predictable in silico from genome sequences using reverse vaccinology. Systematic transcriptomics and proteomics gene expression analyses facilitate rational vaccine design and identification of gene responses that are correlates of protection in vivo. Mathematical simulations have been used to model host-pathogen interactions …

New Media Globalization In Asia: The Online Game Industries Of South Korea, Singapore, And China, Peichi Chung
Iowa Journal of Communication
This paper examines the emerging media flow in the new media economy of Asia by focusing on the networking of media exchange among three growing production centers. It argues that the nation-state has come to play an increasingly important role in the development of a pan-Asian cultural economy in the online gaming industries of Asia. New cultural production centers have created a rising regional growth corridor between South Korea, Singapore and China. This paper concludes that this emerging growth corridor in Asia redefines the power relationship between core and periphery in the global media industry in ways that affect the …

Financialization Of The Asian Game Industry: A New Business Model, Dal Young Jin
Iowa Journal of Communication
This study is a historical documentation of the recent trends of financialization, mainly to ascertain whether these trends are confirmation that financialization plays a pivotal role in the game market in the midst of the global economic crisis in the early 21st century. The major focus will not only be on capital flow but also on financing, which means that the paper is to map out the way in which the Asian game industry has been part of the transnationalization process in order to fully understand the nature of globalization. Eventually, it examines whether the financialization of the online game …

Setting The Rules Of Play: Network Video Game Policies And Regulations In China, Zixue Tai
Iowa Journal of Communication
By situating online game regulations against the backdrop of the grand scheme of Internet information control, this paper offers a comprehensive, in-depth overview of the regulatory framework wherein the Chinese online video game industry operates. The topics analyzed include the bureaucratic regulatory structure, the ground rules for Web cafes operations, the complicated set of controversial market entry conditions and qualifications for online game distribution services as well as the multitude of concerted official measures and state-centered initiatives with the intent to foster particular genres of patriotic, morally-uplifting game titles and to build a core list of national production clusters.
Dysrhythmia Monitoring Practices Of Nurses On A Telemetry Unit, Susan Jane Schultz
Dysrhythmia Monitoring Practices Of Nurses On A Telemetry Unit, Susan Jane Schultz
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Standards of practice for hospital electrocardiogram monitoring were recommended in 2004 by the American Heart Association; however they are not widely followed. Many nurses monitor in a single lead regardless of diagnosis and are unable to differentiate wide QRS complex tachycardias. The purpose of this project was to evaluate the effectiveness of an interactive web-based education program combined with unit-based collaborative learning activities on both telemetry staff nurses‘ knowledge of dysrhythmias and their monitoring practices for patients at risk for wide QRS complex tachycardias. This interventional, one group before-and-after cohort study design consisted of four components: interactive web-based educational program …
Arthropod Biodiversity In Response To The Restoration Of Former Pine Plantations, John Curtis Burkhalter
Arthropod Biodiversity In Response To The Restoration Of Former Pine Plantations, John Curtis Burkhalter
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The goal of ecological restoration is to return degraded or altered ecosystems to their pre-disturbed state with respect to ecosystem structure, function, and composition. In the current study the research objective was to reestablish high levels of biodiversity on two restored pine plantations as well as restore a native pine flatwoods ecosystem. Managed, even-aged pine flatwoods are now the most extensive ecosystem in North Florida, comprising approximately 70% of the forested landscape. Slash pine trees were thinned in the experimental plots to restore the natural slash pine density of native ecosystems. In addition to the thinning treatments, experimental plots have …
Seeking Generalities In Salt Stress Effects On Herbivores: A Multi-Species Approach, Christy Marie Foust
Seeking Generalities In Salt Stress Effects On Herbivores: A Multi-Species Approach, Christy Marie Foust
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Stress has been identified as one of the primary factors influencing the structure of food webs, but few conclusions about the effects of stress on community dynamics have emerged. This study examined generalities that exist between salt stress and insect herbivore responses. Ambient salinity was artificially increased by adding 1.3 kg/m2 of salt to six different plant species: Avicennia germinans, Baccharis halimifolia, Batis maritima, Borrichia frutescens, Iva frutescens, and Spartina alterniflora. By performing a multiple species examination, stress responses were examined to determine if consistencies within and between plant type, ambient salinity conditions, and host plant species (among other criteria) …

Whole Genome Wide Expression Profiles Of Vitis Amurensis Grape Responding To Downy Mildew By Using Solexa Sequencing Technology, Jiao Wu, Yali Zhang, Huiqin Zhang, Hong Huang, Kevin M. Folta, Jiang Lu
School of Information Faculty Publications
Background: Downy mildew (DM), caused by pathogen Plasmopara viticola (PV) is the single most damaging disease of grapes (Vitis L.) worldwide. However, the mechanisms of the disease development in grapes are poorly understood. A method for estimating gene expression levels using Solexa sequencing of Type I restriction-endonuclease-generated cDNA fragments was used for deep sequencing the transcriptomes resulting from PV infected leaves of Vitis amurensis Rupr. cv. Zuoshan-1. Our goal is to identify genes that are involved in resistance to grape DM disease.
Results: Approximately 8.5 million (M) 21-nt cDNA tags were sequenced in the cDNA library derived from PV pathogen-infected …

Review Of Understanding Labor And Employment Law In China, By Ronald C.Brown, Nicholas C. Howson
Review Of Understanding Labor And Employment Law In China, By Ronald C.Brown, Nicholas C. Howson
Reviews
Any attempt to analyze China’s comprehensive labor reform over the past three decades faces at least two dilemmas. First, the analyst must confront the task of describing how the Chinese state has dismantled the “work unit” (or danwei)- based “iron rice bowl” employment and entitlements system, replacing that comforting but low-production employment and social security scheme with formally-proclaimed legal rights and institutions apparently designed to protect employees in a functioning labor market. Second, the analyst must track how the state’s commitment (at all levels of government) to implementation of proclaimed legal and institutional protections has waxed and waned, based upon …

Book Review: What's Left? A Review Of International Law On The Left: Re-Examining Marxist Legacies By Susan Marks, Barbara Stark
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
In response to the American invasion of Iraq, a group of prominent European legal scholars convened a symposium to explore the causes of the “material economic woes of international society.” A revised and expanded version of that Symposium, including five new essays, was published by Cambridge, International Law on the Left: Re-examining the Marxist Legacies (Susan Marks, ed. 2008).
In What’s Left? I review the provocative, scholarly, and occasionally electrifying essays in this volume in two parts, each addressing a version of the question, “What’s Left?” Part I asks, “What‘s ‘Left?” That is, is there a coherent Left in international …
Transepithelial D-Glucose And D-Fructose Transport Across Lobster Intestine, Ijeoma Ebelechukwu Obi
Transepithelial D-Glucose And D-Fructose Transport Across Lobster Intestine, Ijeoma Ebelechukwu Obi
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The mechanisms of transepithelial absorption of dietary D-glucose and D-fructose in the American lobster, Homarus americanus, were investigated in this study in order to determine whether sugar transport proteins have been conserved throughout evolution. Whole lobster intestine was isolated and mounted in a perfusion chamber to determine transepithelial mucosal to serosal (MS) and serosal to mucosal (SM) mechanisms of 3H-D-glucose and 3H-D-fructose transport across the intestine. Unidirectional MS and SM fluxes were measured by adding variable concentrations of 3H-D-glucose and 3H-D-fructose (2.5 to 50uM) to either the perfusate or the bath respectively and sampling the …
Albany’S Dysfunction Denies Due Process, Eric Lane, Laura Seago
Albany’S Dysfunction Denies Due Process, Eric Lane, Laura Seago
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
The coup that shut down the New York State Senate for over a month last summer brought the State Legislature's dysfunction to the forefront of public consciousness. As the public waited for the approval of several critical budget bills and action on a long list of substantive legislation, two members of the newly elected Democratic majority deserted to the Republican side and then switched back again to caucus with the Democrats, destabilizing the already listing New York ship of state and spreading disgust among their colleagues and the public at large. These events were, unfortunately, not anomalous. The process by …

Making It Happily Ever After: Rectifying The Inherent Contradiction Between Suicide And Hollywood Endings, Mitchell Zoelzer
Making It Happily Ever After: Rectifying The Inherent Contradiction Between Suicide And Hollywood Endings, Mitchell Zoelzer
Iowa Journal of Communication
Hollywood movies often struggle to present depressing ideas realistically. This rhetorical analysis, using narrative criticism, analyzes the presentation of suicide in five Hollywood films: Thelma and Louise, Seven Pounds, Milk, What Dreams May Come, and Dead Poet's Society. This analysis suggests a test to tell how Hollywood will present the suicide by simply knowing when the suicide is committed or by whom. If the suicide is presented at the end of the film or committed by the protagonist, Hollywood will be forced to portray it as positive and unrealistic. The only exception to this rule …

The Role Of Socs Proteins In Hiv Immune Evasion, Lisa Nowoslawski Akhtar
The Role Of Socs Proteins In Hiv Immune Evasion, Lisa Nowoslawski Akhtar
All ETDs from UAB
Upon human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection the host mounts a robust and multifaceted immune response. To achieve successful replication, HIV must possess a powerful arsenal of immune evasion weapons. While a complex strategy for HIV immune evasion has been described in the periphery, little is known about the mechanism allowing HIV to overcome the simple interferon (IFN)-ß-mediated innate immune defenses of the central nervous system (CNS). In light of the devastating cognitive dysfunction that is caused by HIV replication within the CNS, a better understanding of this mechanism is critical. Recent studies have shown that viral pathogens can induce the …

The Combined Influence Of The Local Environment Andregional Enrichment On Bird Species Richness, Ethan P. White, A. H. Hurlbert
The Combined Influence Of The Local Environment Andregional Enrichment On Bird Species Richness, Ethan P. White, A. H. Hurlbert
Biology Faculty Publications
It is generally accepted that local species richness at a site reflects the combined influence of local and regional processes. However, most empirical studies evaluate the influence of either local environmental variables or regional enrichment but not both simultaneously. Here we demonstrate the importance of combining these processes to understand continental scale richness patterns in breeding birds. We show that neither regional enrichment nor the local environment in isolation is sufficient to characterize observed patterns of species richness. Combining both sets of variables into a single model results in improved model fit and the removal of residual spatial autocorrelation. At …

Loss Of Foundation Species Increases Population Growth Of Exotic Forbs In Sagebrush Steppe, J S. Prevey, M J. Germino, Nancy J. Huntly
Biology Faculty Publications
The invasion and spread of exotic plants following land disturbance threatens semiarid ecosystems. In sagebrush steppe, soil water is scarce and is partitioned between deeprooted perennial shrubs and shallower-rooted native forbs and grasses. Disturbances commonly remove shrubs, leaving grass-dominated communities, and may allow for the exploitation of water resources by the many species of invasive, tap-rooted forbs that are increasingly successful in this habitat. We hypothesized that exotic forb populations would benefit from increased soil water made available by removal of sagebrush, a foundation species capable of deep-rooting, in semiarid shrub-steppe ecosystems. To test this hypothesis, we used periodic matrix …
