Adaptive Housing: Transformation And Growth In The Urban Environment, Kevin Mowatt Jan 2010

Adaptive Housing: Transformation And Growth In The Urban Environment, Kevin Mowatt

Architecture Theses and Projects

The proposal for an adaptive housing project and its chosen location arose from two obstacles that all modern cities and the world as a whole, face. The urban environment is revered for its cultural amalgam of people and wide range of demographics; however with this density and diversity comes a shortage of one type or another of commodious housing. Additionally and consequentially, the city must expand and build new buildings, leaving older, unsuitable building vacant. An adaptive architecture would allow families to grow and demographics to shift within the established community, all the while reinvigorating that second obstacle the city …

Creating Community: Mixed Use Development In New Bedford, Ma, Matthew J.B. Cate Jan 2010

Creating Community: Mixed Use Development In New Bedford, Ma, Matthew J.B. Cate

Architecture Theses and Projects

In creating a new type of community for New Bedford, MA, there was an awareness of both the existing community, context, and people, while realizing a need for change. The design uses the concept of adapting the existing density into two modes. First, merging the existing residential fabric and merging it with a public program including both commercial and retail development. Second, focusing that new typology into a smaller more refi ned space, while creating new public areas for communal enjoyment and development. Creating such an idea of living takes the existing unused exterior spaces allotted to the typical housing …

Contradiction And Duality Within The City: The House Of Arts And Culture, Andrei Sdrula Jan 2010

Contradiction And Duality Within The City: The House Of Arts And Culture, Andrei Sdrula

Architecture Theses and Projects

This project aims to apply the concepts of contradiction and duality as described in the manifesto to reinvigorate and reconnect a portion of the city Bucharest: the capital of Romania. This city has a long history of architectural achievements and disasters, and this intervention gets to the heart of that legacy when it confronts the House of Parliament: a massive megalomaniacal building constructed under the Ceausescu regime in the 1980s. The project addresses the parliament, sector, city, country, and people with first: a master plan, and then a civic building within that master plan that is located in front of …

However, the guidelines and options used in this exercise are meant to exceed this site’s immediate relevance and provide a model approach for similar sites across the nation.

Roadway Not Improved: Exploring Temporary Uses And Community-Based Alternatives For Unimproved Streets, Leah Hyman, Al Klein, Rani Boyle, Katie Lynd, Emily Lieb Jan 2010

Roadway Not Improved: Exploring Temporary Uses And Community-Based Alternatives For Unimproved Streets, Leah Hyman, Al Klein, Rani Boyle, Katie Lynd, Emily Lieb

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects

The Woodstock neighborhood of SE Portland is home to a high concentration of unimproved streets. Through conversations with the Woodstock Neighborhood Association and representatives at City of Portland agencies, LARKE Planning identified a disconnect between City street policies and residents' desires and concerns surrounding unimproved streets. Through Roadway Not Improved, LARKE is exploring temporary uses and community-based alternatives that will provide more flexibility to respond to the variations that exist among streets' physical characteristics and residents' visions for how these streets can or should contribute to neighborhood character and livability. Although the project focuses specifically on the Woodstock neighborhood, LARKE …

Sotl In Online Education: Strategies And Practices For Using New Media For Teaching And Learning Online, Gila Kurtz, Barry Sponder

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Over the past two decades the research and dissemination of the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) in higher education has sought to improve the quality of the academic experience in face-to-face courses, online classes, and even on virtual reality campuses. Many scholars, including the authors of this essay, have utilized this public discourse to help inspire their practices and then subsequently contribute to the SoTL literature and research. What ideas from the SoTL literature did we find useful for using new media when teaching online? What new strategies and practices have we added to our teaching repertoire? How have …

A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Energy Independence, Robert Danziger Jan 2010

A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Energy Independence, Robert Danziger

Pioneering Sustainable Energy

Preface (Excerpt from the book):

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Energy Independence seeks readers on all sides of the energy/environmental debate who like to laugh. Energy is serious, but Mom taught me to look for the funny.

I’m one of the ghosts of alternative energy past. We ghosts were riding the Wild West putting in windmills and solar systems, cogeneration and biofuel plants, and picking a lot of the low-hanging energy-saving fruits and nuts. A pretty good case can be made that we are responsible for saving around 12 billion barrels of oil and 26 billion tons …

What About Race After Obama: Individualism, Multiculturalism, Or Assimilationism?, John Berteaux Jan 2010

What About Race After Obama: Individualism, Multiculturalism, Or Assimilationism?, John Berteaux

HCOM Faculty Publications and Presentations

I argue that we do not get an adequate picture of society from liberal conceptions of race and racism. What this analysis does, then, is call for a synthesis of historical, social, and cultural insights to inform and enrich the philosophical conception of race and racism.

Gabab Regulation Of Methamphetamine-Induced Associative Learning, Robin Michelle Voigt Jan 2010

Gabab Regulation Of Methamphetamine-Induced Associative Learning, Robin Michelle Voigt

Dissertations

Addiction is a chronic, relapsing disorder for which strikingly few effective therapies exist, and there are no FDA-approved pharmacotherapies for methamphetamine (Meth) addition. There is an immense need to identify the neurobiological underpinnings of psychostimulant addiction and develop efficacious drug therapies to compliment the current mainstay treatment of behavioral/cognitive therapy.

Re-exposure to cues associated with psychostimulants (e.g., drug paraphernalia) increase neuronal activity and can elicit drug-craving and -seeking; an effect which is profound and long-lasting. A mechanism to disrupt those brain processes which are necessary to maintain the association may reduce the incidence of cue-elicited relapse.

Conditioned place preference (CPP) …

Fragments Of Time, Jaclyn Didas Jan 2010

Fragments Of Time, Jaclyn Didas

Theses

Reminiscing upon my childhood in the countryside, I strive to find a visual resting place for these thoughts. By reinterpreting past moments through metal, my work becomes a tangible artifact of a personal history. I use metal to shape these abstract views into the past; often referring to the energy and feeling of a moment rather than a literal representation. It is my aim to immortalize special symbolic memories like this, giving them tangible form. This thesis reveals a collection of important moments in my life interacting with the natural world. These instances are not the so-called momentous occasions, but …

Using Competition Law To Promote Access To Knowledge, Sean Flynn Jan 2010

Using Competition Law To Promote Access To Knowledge, Sean Flynn

Contributions to Books

One of the points of convergence among the many strands of the A2K movement is resistance to the one-size-fits-all ratcheting up of intellectual property provisions around the world. The resistance is grounded in analysis showing that intellectual property rules often create social costs that far outweigh their intended benefits. Much of the A2K movement’s advocacy for limitations of intellectual property rights is located within the field of intellectual property law – promoting the inclusion and use of balancing mechanisms within the laws granting intellectual property rights. But intellectual property rights are also shaped and limited by their interaction with other …

Psychological Science Faculty Works

Cognitive functions show many alternative outcomes and great individual variation during normal aging. We examined learning over the adult life span in CBA mice, along with morphological and electrophysiological substrates. Our aim was to compare cerebellum-dependent delay eyeblink classical conditioning and hippocampus-dependent contextual fear conditioning in the same animals using the same conditioned and unconditioned stimuli for eyeblink and fear conditioning. In a subset of the behaviorally tested mice, we used unbiased stereology to estimate the total number of Purkinje neurons in cerebellar cortex and pyramidal neurons in the hippocampus. Several forms of synaptic plasticity were assessed at different ages …
