Varroa Mites And Honey Bee Health: Can Varroa Explain Part Of The Colony Losses?, Yves Le Conte, Marion D. Ellis, Wolfgang Ritter
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Since 2006, disastrous colony losses have been reported in Europe and North America. The causes of the losses were not readily apparent and have been attributed to overwintering mortalities and to a new phenomenon called Colony Collapse Disorder. Most scientists agree that there is no single explanation for the extensive colony losses but that interactions between different stresses are involved. As the presence of Varroa in each colony places an important pressure on bee health, we here address the question of how Varroa contributes to the recent surge in honey bee colony losses.
The Subtle Arbitrios Of Cervantes: Don Quijote As A Cautionary Tale For Leaders, Jonathan Edwin Olson
The Subtle Arbitrios Of Cervantes: Don Quijote As A Cautionary Tale For Leaders, Jonathan Edwin Olson
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Miguel de Cervantes was clearly a man who had an interest in leadership. He sought leadership positions for himself during his life, and his works often include treatments of leadership issues. However, there are only three studies of leadership in his most important work, Don Quijote, and all are seriously flawed due to their failure to interpret passages from the novel in their context. This study uses a historical-grammatical hermeneutic to correct this error. Through a close reading of the text, this study demonstrates that Cervantes has encoded warnings for leaders in Don Quixote.

Direct And Indirect Effects Of Climate Change On Amphibian Populations, Andrew R. Blaustein, Susan C. Walls, Betsy A. Bancroft, Joshua J. Lawler, Catherine L. Searle, Stephanie S. Gervasi
Biology Faculty Scholarship
As part of an overall decline in biodiversity, populations of many organisms are declining and species are being lost at unprecedented rates around the world. This includes many populations and species of amphibians. Although numerous factors are affecting amphibian populations, we show potential direct and indirect effects of climate change on amphibians at the individual, population and community level. Shifts in amphibian ranges are predicted. Changes in climate may affect survival, growth, reproduction and dispersal capabilities. Moreover, climate change can alter amphibian habitats including vegetation, soil, and hydrology. Climate change can influence food availability, predator-prey relationships and competitive interactions which …

This paper originated as a lecture to students pursuing the Erasmus Mundus Master of Laws in Transnational Trade and Finance Law at the Universidad de Deusto, Bilbao, Spain. Although generally relevant for researchers in a variety of contexts up to and including writing book monographs, it is primarily aimed at graduate students doing major papers, theses or dissertations and undergraduate (including first-degree law) students doing research essays in upper-year seminars. The pointers found in the paper must accordingly be modified, mutatis mutandi, according to the nature of the research project, including the time available in which to complete it. The …
Exposure To Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (Pbdes) Suppresses The Release Of Pro-Inflammatory Products By Alveolar Macrophages In Vitro, Stephen R. Hennigar
Exposure To Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (Pbdes) Suppresses The Release Of Pro-Inflammatory Products By Alveolar Macrophages In Vitro, Stephen R. Hennigar
Master's Theses and Capstones
Endocrine disrupting chemicals have adverse effects on immune function that may result in respiratory conditions. Inhalation of dust is a major route of exposure to PBDEs; however, the impact of PBDEs on the immune response is unclear. The objective of this in vitro study was to determine the impact of PBDEs on the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines by activated alveolar macrophages. Porcine alveolar macrophages were grown in RPMI growth media supplemented with 10% porcine serum and incubated for 24-hours. After 24-hours, cells were activated by inoculation with PMA. In addition to PMA, different concentrations of the PBDE mixture DE-71 were …

The Effects Of Chlortetracycline, Lasalocid, And The Combination On Growth, Health, Apparent Total Tract Nutrient Digestibility, And Nitrogen Retention Of Post-Weaned Dairy Heifers, Kelly Anne Greenbacker
Master's Theses and Capstones
The experiment compared the effects of chlortetracycline (CTC), lasalocid (L), and the combination (LCTC) on dairy heifers. Forty calves, 12 wk of age, were assigned to control (C), L (1 mg/kg BW/d), CTC (350 mg/d), or LCTC. Individual DMI was measured daily. Skeletal measures, BW, BCS, blood urea N and glucose concentrations were measured weekly. Calves received an external marker to estimate apparent total tract nutrient digestibilities. Total collection of urine was obtained from 20 calves to determine N retention. The DMI was higher (P=0.01) for CTC versus L and C, and DMI was lower for L versus LCTC. ADG …
Spatial Learning And Stress Response Of Male Rats Prenatally Exposed To Dexamethasone, Joseph John Donohoe
Spatial Learning And Stress Response Of Male Rats Prenatally Exposed To Dexamethasone, Joseph John Donohoe
Master’s Theses
Dexamethasone is routinely administered to women at risk for a preterm birth in order to enhance fetal lung development and reduce uterine contractions. Research has demonstrated possible behavioral abnormalities in adulthood as a result of dexamethasone treatment. Using nonlinear mixed effects modeling, this study found thatprenatal dexamethasone treatment impaired spatial learning and memory of adult male Sprague-Dawley rats. Prenatal dexamethasone treatment also led to more anxiety related behaviors on Elevated Plus Maze testing 1.5 hours after a stress challenge. Because theassumptions underlying the independent samples t-test were violated, the randomization test was used to compare groups on the Elevated Plus …
Color Variation In Museum Specimens Of Birds: Effects Of Stress, Pigmentation, And Duration Of Storage, Eileen A. Kennedy
Color Variation In Museum Specimens Of Birds: Effects Of Stress, Pigmentation, And Duration Of Storage, Eileen A. Kennedy
Master’s Theses
Animal coloration often serves as a signal to others that may communicate traits about the individual such as toxicity, status, or quality. Colorful ornaments in many animals are often honest signals of quality assessed by mates, and different colors may beproduced by different biochemical pigments. Investigations of the mechanisms responsible for variation in color expression among birds are best when including a geographically and temporally broad sample. In order to obtain such a sample, studies such as this often use museum specimens; however, in order for museum specimens toserve as an accurate replacement, they must accurately represent living birds, or …
Fantasy Making The Invisible Visible: Liminality In Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere And American Gods, Courtney Linn Firman
Fantasy Making The Invisible Visible: Liminality In Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere And American Gods, Courtney Linn Firman
Master’s Theses
The purpose of this thesis was to examine the ways in which the fantasy genre is ideally positioned for discussing social issues, such as invisibility and liminality. Elements associated with invisibility, such as poverty, homelessness, and alienation, were explored within two novels by Neil Gaiman: Neverwhere and American Gods. Gaiman's application of these elements within the fantasy genre were juxtaposed with samples from other genres, including Plato's 'Parable of the Cave' and Jennifer Toth's The Mole People. Another aim was to contrast Gaiman's use of the 'beast in the sewer' metaphor with previous renditions of the myth, demonstrating how fantasy, …

Wom(B)Anism: Reading Relationships Between The Community And The Womb In Sankofa, The Women Of Brewster Place, And Corregidora , Belinda M. Waller-Peterson
Master’s Theses
This project attempts to contribute to the various discourses within the black womanist tradition. In 1983, Alice Walker published her landmark collection of essays entitled In Search of Our Mother Gardens: Womanist Prose. At the outset of the volume, Walker defines the core concept of womanism. After a poetic four-part definition of the term womanist, Walker concludes by stating, 'womanist is to feminist as purple to lavender' (Phillips 19). Although this analogy is critically engaged, the scholarly discourse that emerged in response to Walker's proposition shapes the intellectual inner workings of this project. Certain established concepts (such as ancestral mediation …
Effects Of Prenatal Dexamethasone On Hipopcampal Serotonin 1a Receptors In Adult Male Rats, Rahul Vijay
Effects Of Prenatal Dexamethasone On Hipopcampal Serotonin 1a Receptors In Adult Male Rats, Rahul Vijay
Master’s Theses
The main activation route for the stress response is the hypothalamo-pituitaryadrenal axis (HPA) and the sympatho-adrenomedullary system. The HPA axis is a neuroendocrine feedback loop mediated by an array of tissue specific hormones, receptors and neurotransmitters that regulate glucocorticoid (GC) release. GCs are steroidal hormones produced by the adrenal glands and are key players in a negativefeedback loop controlling HPA activity. They influence the HPA axis through glucocorticoid receptors in the hypothalamus and pituitary and through both glucocorticoid (GR) and mineralcorticoid receptors (MR) that are co-localized in the hippocampus. Repeated or chronic stress exerts a negative influence on these HPA …

Identifying Profitable Characteristics Of Steer Calves To Be Retained, Matthew Stockton, Brian Williams
Cornhusker Economics
A recent study done by the Department of Agricultural Economics, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, investigates the predictive power of physical characteristics exhibited by steer calves, at and prior to weaning, on profits associated with weaned calf retention. Historically, retained ownership of beef cattle calves owned from birth through the finishing stage of production by a single owner, has been found to be a profitable endeavor for cow-calf producers. Despite these findings, observed evidence indicates many producers choose not to retain ownership. Three reasons that may explain this include tradition, cash flow needs of the business and risk. Producers who choose to …
The Nebraska Citizen Initiative Process, J. David Aiken
The Nebraska Citizen Initiative Process, J. David Aiken
Cornhusker Economics
Nebraska is one of about half of the states that allow its citizens to initiate new statutes (legislative laws) or constitutional provisions by way of the citizen initiative petition process. Since 1992, over 30 constitutional amendments have been voted on under these provisions. In Nebraska, citizen initiatives have dealt with corporate farming restrictions, term limits, gambling, government spending limits and antiaffirmative action requirements. There is a chance that an animal welfare provision may be on the November 6, 2012 general election ballot. This newsletter takes a quick look at the initiative process. Webs In Vitro And In Vivo: Spiders Alter Their Orb-Web Spinning Behavior In The Laboratory, Andrew Sensenig, Ingi Agnarsson, Taylor M. Gondek, Todd A. Blackledge
Biology Faculty Research
Many studies of the elegant architectures of orb webs are conducted in controlled laboratory environments that remove environmental variability. The degree to which spider behavior in these circumstances resembles that of spiders in the wild is largely unknown. We compared web architecture and silk investment of furrowed orb weavers Larinioides corium's (Clerck 1757) building webs in laboratory cages and spinning webs on fences in the field and found significant differences. The volume of major ampullate silk in radii was 53% lower in cage webs, primarily because the silk was 50% thinner, but also because spiders tended to spin 14% fewer …

In the opening scene of Steven Spielberg’s 2002 film adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s short story The Minority Report, we see stylistically edited, disjointed images that appear to depict a man murdering two lovers. It is soon made clear that the images are the video representations of precognitive predictions of a future crime that were made by members of a futuristic crime prevention agency.
Later in the film, we see the same man, at home with his wife—the woman he is shown murdering in the earlier images—and it becomes clear that we are watching the last few moments …
Coincident Visual Retinotopy In Simultaneous Slow Cortical Potentials And Fmri Recordings, Hugo Sandoval
Coincident Visual Retinotopy In Simultaneous Slow Cortical Potentials And Fmri Recordings, Hugo Sandoval
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Slow Cortical Potentials (SCPs) and Evoked Potentials (EP) in combination with source reconstruction techniques can provide accurate and essential information about brain activity. Current techniques offer the necessary tools to study the human brain by providing detailed temporal and spatial information of the normal brain and its disorders. Human functional neuroimaging currently uses fMRI as the gold standard because of its high spatial localization and because of being non-invasive. This method's disadvantages are its high cost and unnatural environment. The purpose of this work was to determine if the combination of SCPs and traditional electroencephalography (EEG) provides a suitable technique …

Fair Measure Of The Right To Vote: A Comparative Perspective Of Voting Rights Enforcement In A Maturing Democracy, Janai S. Nelson
Fair Measure Of The Right To Vote: A Comparative Perspective Of Voting Rights Enforcement In A Maturing Democracy, Janai S. Nelson
Faculty Publications
Constitutional text and government action are at times discordant in important ways. This discrepancy occurs in both mature and emerging democracies. It can result in the underenforcement of constitutional norms and implicate the rule of law. When the constitutional norm involves the right to vote, the gap between constitutions and governance inevitably triggers concerns about democracy as well. There is rich and ample debate within American legal scholarship over the effect of the underenforcement of constitutional norms on the scope and meaning of the norm. The arguments generally fall into one of two camps. One strand of argument suggests that …

From Kosovo To Catalonia: Separatism And Integration In Europe, Christopher J. Borgen
Faculty Publications
In July 2010 the International Court of Justice rendered its Advisory Opinion on the legality of Kosovo's declaration of independence and the Constitutional Court of Spain rendered an opinion concerning the autonomy of Catalonia. Two very different cases, from very different places, decided by very different courts. Nonetheless, they each provide insights on the issue of separatism in the midst of European integration. Does the Kosovo opinion open the door for other separatist groups? Does the process of European integration increase or undercut separatism? In addressing these questions, this article proceeds in three main parts. Part A briefly recaps the …
Unto Perfect Manhood: An Instrumental Case Study Of Leadership Formation In An African American Boys High School, Daniel Ivan Mackinney
Unto Perfect Manhood: An Instrumental Case Study Of Leadership Formation In An African American Boys High School, Daniel Ivan Mackinney
Dissertations
This qualitative study investigates the influence of single-sex education on leadership formation at an all boys, urban Catholic high school where a majority of the students come from disadvantaged backgrounds. The researcher has found an association between graduation from a single-sex school and leadership attainment. In order to understand what it is about a single-sex education that might nurture leadership development the author completed an instrumental case study of the school seeking to identify those elements that might nurture leadership formation.
The theoretical framework for this study is based on the research of Wolf-Wendel (1998) who relies on institutional characteristics …

To Be Muslim Or "Muslim-Looking" In America: A Comparative Exploration Of Racial And Religious Prejudice In The 21st Century, Sheryll Cashin
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
This Essay begins with a confession. In taking implicit association tests ("IATs") designed to measure my unconscious attitude toward two particular demographic groups, I discovered that I, an African-American, harbored a "slight automatic preference" for Europeans over blacks and for "other people" over "Arab-Muslims." Both of these results were contrary to my professed or conscious assertions of neutrality. Why would a pro-integration scholar who seeks to promote cross-racial understanding and inclusion exhibit such implicit biases? And why is it that a majority of others who take these tests register similar implicit biases? The point of my confession is to underscore …
Pharmaceutical Patent Litigation Settlements: Implications For Competition And Innovation, John R. Thomas
Pharmaceutical Patent Litigation Settlements: Implications For Competition And Innovation, John R. Thomas
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Although brand-name pharmaceutical companies routinely procure patents on their innovative medications, such rights are not self-enforcing. Brand-name firms that wish to enforce their patents against generic competitors must commence litigation in the federal courts. Such litigation ordinarily terminates in either a judgment of infringement, which typically blocks generic competition until such time as the patent expires, or a judgment that the patent is invalid or not infringed, which typically opens the market to generic entry. As with other sorts of commercial litigation, however, the parties to pharmaceutical patent litigation may choose to settle their case. Certain of these settlements have …

Patrick J. Rohan’s connection to St. John’s reaches back more than half a century. He graduated from St. John’s University in 1954 and from the School of Law in 1956. Two years later, he joined the Law School faculty, where he served for fifty-two years until his retirement in June 2009. He died just a few months later, on November 26, 2009. The School of Law community mourns the passing of this man of St. John’s—Dean Emeritus, Professor of Law, alumnus, supporter, and friend.
