Phenotypic Divergence During The Invasion Of Phyla Canescens In Australia And France: Evidence For Selection-Driven Evolution, Cheng-Yuan Xu, Mic H. Julien, Mohammad Fatemi, Christophe Girod, Rieks D. Van Klinken, Caroline L. Gross, Stephen J. Novak Jan 2010

Phenotypic Divergence During The Invasion Of Phyla Canescens In Australia And France: Evidence For Selection-Driven Evolution, Cheng-Yuan Xu, Mic H. Julien, Mohammad Fatemi, Christophe Girod, Rieks D. Van Klinken, Caroline L. Gross, Stephen J. Novak

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Rapid adaptive evolution has been advocated as a mechanism that promotes invasion. Demonstrating adaptive evolution in invasive species requires rigorous analysis of phenotypic shifts driven by selection. Here, we document selection-driven evolution of Phyla canescens, an Argentine weed, in two invaded regions (Australia and France). Invasive populations possessed similar or higher diversity than native populations, and displayed mixed lineages from different sources, suggesting that genetic bottlenecks in both countries might have been alleviated by multiple introductions. Compared to native populations, Australian populations displayed more investment in sexual reproduction, whereas French populations possessed enhanced vegetative reproduction and growth. We partitioned …

Holding The High Ground: The Operational Calculus Of Torture And Coercive Interrogation, Joseph L. Falvey Jr., Brian D. Eck Jan 2010

Holding The High Ground: The Operational Calculus Of Torture And Coercive Interrogation, Joseph L. Falvey Jr., Brian D. Eck

Campbell Law Review

In Part I of this Article, we first consider some of the strengths and weaknesses of the partially adequate objections. In Part II, we explore torture in light of the biological distinction between pain and suffering and consider the implications of that distinction for our understanding of free will and the fighting spirit. Finally, in Part III, we suggest a more fundamental view of torture that navigates between the Scylla of naive moralizing and the Charybdis of ticking time-bombs. We propose that the debate should focus on torture's effect on our country's moral certainty, on the fighting spirit of our …

The Meaning Of Just Cause In North Carolina Public Employment Law: Caroll And Its Progeny Provide For A Heightened Multifactor Standard For State Employee Disciplinary Cases, J. Michael Mcguinness Jan 2010

The Meaning Of Just Cause In North Carolina Public Employment Law: Caroll And Its Progeny Provide For A Heightened Multifactor Standard For State Employee Disciplinary Cases, J. Michael Mcguinness

Campbell Law Review

This Article explores the doctrine of just cause in North Carolina public employment law. After a review of the leading North Carolina Supreme Court case of N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources v. Carroll and its progeny, this Article examines applicable just cause standards and analytical tests so that the true meaning of just cause can be better understood. Multi-factor tests are applied in order to employ a more objective just cause standard and to avoid unprincipled conclusions not founded upon established criteria.

Not Only Innovation But Also Collaboration, Funding, Goodwill And Commitment: Which Role For Patent Laws In Post-Copenhagen Climate Change Action, 9 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 657 (2010), Estelle Derclaye Jan 2010

Not Only Innovation But Also Collaboration, Funding, Goodwill And Commitment: Which Role For Patent Laws In Post-Copenhagen Climate Change Action, 9 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 657 (2010), Estelle Derclaye

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

Patent laws can do their bit to help reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. In 2009, accelerated grant procedures and reduction of fees have been put in place by among others the UK and US patent offices. Private initiatives such as the eco-patent commons to licence technology free of charge have been taken. But greening patent law is only a small part of the solution. However well-intentioned all these initiatives are, for several reasons, they may not be sufficient or even at all used. More than intellectual property-related solutions, what will be needed is non- intellectual property-related solutions such as using …

Consumer Protection In The Eco-Mark Era: A Preliminary Survey And Assessment Of Anti-Greenwashing Activity And Eco-Mark Enforcement, 9 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 742 (2010), Eric L. Lane

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

We stand at the dawn of the Eco-mark Era—a period in which green branding, advertising environmentally friendly products and services, and touting sustainable business practices will be pervasive and profitable. However, with the rise of green branding comes the temptation of greenwashing—making false or misleading claims regarding environmentally friendly products, services or practices. Instances of greenwashing appear to be on the rise, but we are seeing more activity to combat greenwashing by public enforcement and consumer class actions. In addition, green brand owners are protecting and enforcing their eco-marks, and trademark litigation involving green brands is becoming commonplace. How is …

The Eminence Of Imminence And The Myopia Of Markets, 9 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 674 (2010), Teneille R. Brown

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

This article questions the privileging of disaster, or imminent threat, over more distant threats to public health. In many cases, this privileging makes sense as we do not have time to evaluate the threat under traditional frameworks. But in some cases, we privilege disaster in ways that may be ethically and legally unsound. Here, I am interested in a particular type of public health threat—the negative consequences that stem from climate change. In this article, I view the climate change discussion through the lens of distributive justice. I analyze the ethical as well as legal arguments in support of encouraging …

The Wisdom Of Legislating For Anticipated Technological Advancements, 10 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 154 (2010), Yvette Joy Liebesman

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

The past four decades have been witness to the realization of ideas which, when first contemplated, seemed to resemble the prose of science fiction writers. Some seemingly far-fetched notions, such as robot pets, anti-sleeping pills, and ugly unisex jumpsuits, are now readily available. However, there are currently no colonies on the moon, and we are all still waiting to order our personal jetpacks from Amazon.com. Some are likely to remain in the realm of science fiction and will only be realized with the help of movie and television special effects artists. Yet through these entertaining glimpses into a potential future, we …

Influence Of Selenium And Mercury Chemistries On The Progression Of Cardiomyopathy In Pygmy Sperm Whales, Kogia Breviceps, Colleen E. Bryan Jan 2010

Influence Of Selenium And Mercury Chemistries On The Progression Of Cardiomyopathy In Pygmy Sperm Whales, Kogia Breviceps, Colleen E. Bryan

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Pygmy sperm whales (Kogia breviceps) are the second most frequently stranded toothed whale along the U.S. Atlantic and Gulf coasts. More than half of documented cases exhibit signs of cardiomyopathy (CMP). Many factors may contribute to the development of idiopathic CMP in K. breviceps, including genetics, infectious agents, contaminants, biotoxins, and dietary intake (vitamins, selenium, mercury, and pro-oxidants). Nutritional deficiencies of selenium (Se) have been shown in mouse and bovine models to contribute to CMP. The K. breviceps diet, consisting mainly of squid, imparts a high dose of mercury (Hg), which requires detoxification, and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) that require …

During the last decade, the use of herbal medicine has expanded globally and gained popularity. With the tremendous expansion in the use of herbal medicine worldwide, safety and efficacy as well as quality control of herbal medicines have become more and more issues of concern for both health authorities and the public. Although herbal medicine has been in use for hundreds to thousands years, very limited science-based data exist to explicit its chemical constituents, pharmacological activities and toxicity. Therefore, lack of scientific evidence for herbal medicine usage elicits the need for systematic studies of herbal medicine, including phytochemical, analytical, and …

The Gaza Strip: Israel, Its Foreign Policy, And The Goldstone Report, Milena Sterio Jan 2010

The Gaza Strip: Israel, Its Foreign Policy, And The Goldstone Report, Milena Sterio

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

At the end of 2008, Israel launched a three-week military offensive in the Gaza Strip (Operation Cast Lead), during which Israel carried out over 2,360 air strikes and numerous ground assaults over Gaza, causing the death of approximately 1,300 Palestinians, and wounding over 5,000 individuals. The Gaza conflict sparked numerous allegations of war crimes and international humanitarian law violations by both Israel and Hamas. Thus, the Human Rights Council (HRC) appointed a U.N. Fact Finding Mission on the Gaza Conflict (Goldstone Mission) led by prominent international jurist Richard Goldstone. The Goldstone Mission issued the Goldstone Report in September 2009, concluding …

Affect Comprehension In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Visual Field Isolation Intervention, Erica L. Schmidt Jan 2010

Affect Comprehension In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Visual Field Isolation Intervention, Erica L. Schmidt

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

Children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) tend to show under-activation of the right fusiform face area of the ventral temporal cortex when viewing emotional faces, which may explain their affect comprehension deficits. This left hemisphere dominance, indicative of a piecemeal processing strategy, has been shown a less effective method of understanding true emotion. The present study aimed to condition the left-visual-field-to right-FFA pathway by allowing children with ASD to work through an emotion-matching computer program. One group completed the experiment with both eyes uncovered, while the other worked with only their left visual field open. Though no significant differences …

Roles Of The Sarcoplasmic/Endoplasmic Reticulum Ca2+-Atpase, Plasma Membrane Ca2+-Atpase And Na+/Ca2+ Exchanger In Regulation Of Heart Rate In Larval Drosophila, Mohati Desai-Shah, A. R. Papoy, M. Ward, Robin L. Cooper Jan 2010

Roles Of The Sarcoplasmic/Endoplasmic Reticulum Ca2+-Atpase, Plasma Membrane Ca2+-Atpase And Na+/Ca2+ Exchanger In Regulation Of Heart Rate In Larval Drosophila, Mohati Desai-Shah, A. R. Papoy, M. Ward, Robin L. Cooper

Biology Faculty Publications

We investigated the roles of three regulatory proteins that impact [Ca2+]i within cardiac myocytes of Drosophila melanogaster. The NCX (Na+/Ca2+ exchanger), PMCA (plasma membrane Ca2+-ATPase) and SERCA (sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase) were compromised by ionic, pharmacological, mutationalmanipulation, and with a combination of approaches, while heart rate (HR) was monitored. A decrease in SERCA function reduced HR more for intact larva in comparison to a dissected larva. Dissected preparations were used to expose the heart directly to agents. A compromised PMCA also reduced HR; however, attenuated NCX function by low [Na+ …

Analysis Of Pulse Transit Time With The Inclusion Of A Microvascular Component In Head-Up Tilt And Blood Withdrawal Induced Central Hypovolemia, Mark D. Schlangel

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The pulse transit time (PTT) has been investigated as an early noninvasive marker of hypovolemia, reflecting a combination of changes in the pre-ejection period (PEP) and vascular transit time (VTT). The use of photoplethysmography (PPG) has limited the analysis to the macrovascular peripheral circulation by nature of the detection mechanism of the PPG itself. Excluded is the richly innervated microcirculation that may have a significant influence on the vasomotor response to a hypovolemic challenge. Therefore the time required for the blood to travel from the PPG to the microvasculature (VTTm) under a laser Doppler flowmeter (LDF) would provide …
