New Insights From The Archives: Historicizing The Political Economy Of Navajo Weaving And Wool Growing, Kathy M'Closkey
New Insights From The Archives: Historicizing The Political Economy Of Navajo Weaving And Wool Growing, Kathy M'Closkey
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
After the formation of the reservation in 1868, the government issued licenses to regulate trade in wool, textiles, and pelts that traders acquired from Navajos. In 1890, blanket sales were 10% of wool sales; by 1930, weavers processed one-third of the clip, their textiles were valued at $1 million, and provided one-third of reservation income. Only Navajos raised hardy coarse-wooled churros whose wool is ideal for hand processing. Recently analyzed archival evidence reveals that blankets were transformed into rugs when tariff removal (1894-97) triggered imports of one billion pounds of duty-free wool, much of it from China. Thus Navajos underwent …
Woven Color In China/ The Five Colors In Chinese Culture And Polychrome Woven Textiles, Zhao Feng
Woven Color In China/ The Five Colors In Chinese Culture And Polychrome Woven Textiles, Zhao Feng
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
There existed the yin-yang theory and the five color system, including red, blue, yellow, black and white, in ancient Chinese culture. Each color refers to one of the five directions, east, west, north, south and middle, also one of the five planets, Venus, Jupiter, Mercury, Mars and Saturn, as well as one of the five materials, metal, wood, water, fire and earth. This idea was also widely used in the Chinese polychrome woven textiles from the Han dynasty (2c. BC-2c. AD), to the Ming dynasty (14-17c). Based on the analysis of all available samples of polychrome woven silks with cloud …

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database
Bovine tuberculosis (bovine TB), caused by Mycobacterium bovis, has reemerged in northern Michigan, USA, with detections in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in 1994 and in cattle in 1998. Since then, significant efforts have been directed toward reducing deer densities in the area in the hopes of reducing the bovine TB prevalence rate in deer and eliminating spillover of the disease into cattle. Despite the success of the efforts to reduce deer densities, additional cattle herds have become infected. Other mammals can be infected with M. bovis, and some carnivores and omnivores had been found to be infected …

Starch-Entrapped Microspheres Show A Beneficial Fermentation Profile And Decrease In Potentially Harmful Bacteria During In Vitro Fermentation In Faecal Microbiota Obtained From Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Devin J. Rose, Koen Venema, Ali Keshavarzian, Bruce R. Hamaker
Devin Rose Publications
The purpose of this research was to test the hypothesis that starch-entrapped microspheres would produce favourable fermentation profiles and microbial shifts during in vitro fermentation with the faecal microbiota from patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In vitro fermentation was carried out using a validated, dynamic, computer-controlled model of the human colon (Toegepast Natuurwetenschappelijk Onderzoek gastrointestinal model-2) after inoculation with pooled faeces from healthy individuals, patients with inactive IBD (Crohn’s disease (CD)) or patients with active IBD (ulcerative colitis (UC)). Starch-entrapped microspheres fermented more slowly and produced more butyrate than fructooligosaccharides (FOS) when fermented with the faecal microbiota from patients …

Short Communication: Detection Of Yeast Dna In Omasal Digesta Of Dairy Cows Consuming Dried Distillers Grains And Solubles, E. Castillo-Lopez, Paul J. Kononoff, Jess L. Miner
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Purine analysis is widely used to estimate microbial crude protein (MCP) flow, and the method assumes that all purines contained in feed are degraded in the rumen and that purines detected are of microbial origin. The objectives of our experiment were (1) to determine if DNA from yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) contained in dried distillers grains and solubles (DDGS) escapes degradation in the rumen and (2) to estimate the proportion of yeast DNA compared with total bacterial DNA in omasal samples. Two ruminally fistulated Holstein dairy cows averaging 649 kg (SD = 42.0) and 126 d in milk (SD …

Effect Of Pen Mates On Growth, Backfat Depth, And Longissimus Muscle Area Of Swine, W. L. Hsu, Rodger K. Johnson, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Records on final BW (kg), backfat depth (cm), and LM area (cm2) of pigs from a University of Nebraska Large White/Landrace composite population were analyzed to estimate the effects of pen mates. Measurements were at approximately 180 d of age for 3,524 pigs in 351 pens (9 to 11 pigs per pen) farrowed from 1999 to 2005. The area of each pen was 8.13 m2. The full model (M1) included the fixed effects of contemporary group, sex, line, and the covariates of age and inbreeding coefficient, and included random direct genetic, genetic pen-mate, permanent environmental, pen, …

Validation Of Live Animal Ultrasonic Measurements Of Body Composition In Market Lambs, J. C. Emenheiser, S. P. Greiner, Ronald M. Lewis, D. R. Notter
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Market lambs from the state fair of Virginia (n = 172) were ultrasonically evaluated by 4 scan technicians and 3 image interpreters to determine accuracy of ultrasonic estimates of loin muscle area (ULMA), backfat thickness (UBF), and body wall thickness (UBW). Lambs were initially scanned at the preferred magnification setting of each technician; 2 chose 1.5× and 2 chose 2.0×. Lambs were then scanned a second time for ULMA and UBF with machine magnification settings changed from 1.5 to 2.0×, or vice versa, midway through the second scan. Lambs were then slaughtered, and analogous measurements [carcass loin muscle area, …
Longitudinal Changes In Ultrasonic Measurements Of Body Composition During Growth In Suffolk Ram Lambs And Evaluation Of Alternative Adjustment Strategies For Ultrasonic Scan Data, J. C. Emenheiser, S. P. Greiner, R. M. Lewis, D. R. Notter
Longitudinal Changes In Ultrasonic Measurements Of Body Composition During Growth In Suffolk Ram Lambs And Evaluation Of Alternative Adjustment Strategies For Ultrasonic Scan Data, J. C. Emenheiser, S. P. Greiner, R. M. Lewis, D. R. Notter
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Four equations were used to compare alternative procedures to adjust ultrasonic estimates (y) of backfat thickness (BF) and LM area (LMA) for BW using data from a series of 7 scans on 24 Suffolk ram lambs born in 2007. Equations were linear, linear + quadratic, allometric (y = αBWβ), and allometric + BW (ABW; y = αBWβeγW). Goodness of fit was very similar between equations over the range of the data. Resulting adjustment equations were tested using 3 serial scans on winter-born Suffolk (n = 150), Hampshire (n = 36), and Dorset (n = 43) rams and 52 fall-born Dorset …
Feed Intake Of Sheep As Affected By Body Weight, Breed, Sex, And Feed Composition, R. M. Lewis, G. C. Emmans
Feed Intake Of Sheep As Affected By Body Weight, Breed, Sex, And Feed Composition, R. M. Lewis, G. C. Emmans
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
The hypotheses tested were that genetic size-scaling for mature BW (A, kg) would reduce variation in intake between kinds of sheep and that quadratic polynomials on u = BW/A with zero intercept would provide good descriptions of the relationship between scaled intake (SI, g/A0.73 d) and degree of maturity in BW (u) across feeds of differing quality. Both sexes of Suffolk sheep from 2 experimental lines (n = 225) and from 3 breed types (Suffolk, Scottish Blackface, and their cross; n = 149) were recorded weekly for ad libitum feed intake and BW; recording of intake was from weaning through, …
What Feminists Have To Lose In Same-Sex Marriage Litigation, Mary Anne Case
What Feminists Have To Lose In Same-Sex Marriage Litigation, Mary Anne Case
Articles
This Article highlights both the rewards in accepting and the risks in rejecting a claim of sex discrimination as one constitutional basis for invalidating restrictions on marriage for same-sex couples. It argues that recognition of same-sex marriage and elimination of enforced sex roles are as inextricably intertwined as the duck is with the rabbit in the famous optical illusion. As the Article demonstrates, this has long been clear to opponents, from the pope to David Blankenhorn, but needs to become as clear to proponents and to judges deciding same-sex marriage cases if we are to preserve and extend the liberty …
Reunifying Privacy Law, Lior Strahilevitz
Reunifying Privacy Law, Lior Strahilevitz
Articles
In the years since Samuel Warren and Louis Brandeis proposed a unified theory of invasion of privacy tort liability, American information privacy law became increasingly fragmented and decreasingly coherent. William Prosser's 1960 article, Privacy, which heavily influenced the Restatement of Torts, endorsed and hastened this trend toward fragmentation, which spread from tort law to the various statutory branches of information privacy law. This Article argues for the reunification of information privacy law in two connected ways. First, Prosser's fragmented privacy tort should be replaced with a unitary tort for invasion of privacy that looks to the private or public nature …

Facilitating Intergovernmental Dialogue: Judicial Review Of The Division Of Powers In The Supreme Court Of Canada, Wade K. Wright
The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
This article provides a novel account of the the ory of judicial review that is evident in the Supreme Court of Canada’s recent division of powers decisions (2000-2009). Under this the ory, the Supreme Court encourages the political branches to take the lead in defining the division of powers, by working out a mutually acceptable allocation of jurisdiction in each regulatory area. The Supreme Court limits itself primarily to facilitating intergovernmental dialogue about the division of powers, and managing the conflicts that result where the political branches fail to agree. The Supreme Court does not completely refuse to play a …

"All persons held as slaves ... are and henceforth free."' The orders from President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation first issued on September twenty-second in 1862 while limited in scope freeing certain slaves, served to ignite imagination and pride in those who now look back in history at this defining event.
