Nip/Duoxa Is Essential For Drosophila Embryonic Development And Regulates Oxidative Stress Response., Xiaojun Xie, Jack Hu, Xiping Liu, Hanjuan Qin, Anthony Percival-Smith, Yong Rao, Shawn S C Li
Biochemistry Publications
NIP/DuoxA, originally cloned as a protein capable of binding to the cell fate determinant Numb in Drosophila, was recently identified as a modulator of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in mammalian systems. Despite biochemical and cellular studies that link NIP/DuoxA to the generation of ROS through the dual oxidase (Duox) enzyme, the in vivo function of NIP/DuoxA has not been characterized to date. Here we report a genetic and functional characterization of nip in Drosophila melanogaster. We show that nip is essential for Drosophila development as nip null mutants die at the 1(st) larval instar. Expression of UAS-nip, but not …
Effects Of Propionic Acid On Locomotor Activity, Anxiety- Related Behaviour, Social Interaction, And Its Induction Of Aversive Internal Cues, In Male & Female Rats: Support For An Animal Model Of Autism, Jessica Benzaquen
Digitized Theses
Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are characterized by altered motor activity, restricted interests and social impairment, and are four times more prevalent in males. Co-morbidities such as anxiety disorder, sickness behaviour and gastrointestinal symptoms are present in a subset of patients. Propionic acid (PPA) is a short-chain fatty acid and end-product of enteric bacteria that has been implicated in autism symptoms. Experiment one examined the effects of 14 days of twice daily intraperitoneal (IP) injections of PPA (500mg/kg, 0.26 M, pH 7.5) on locomotor activity and social interaction in juvenile male and female Long-Evans rats. Male and female PPA treated rats …
Investigations Into The Fatigue-Related Reduction In Torque, Shortening Velocity, And Joint Range Of Motion In Humans, Arthur J. Cheng
Investigations Into The Fatigue-Related Reduction In Torque, Shortening Velocity, And Joint Range Of Motion In Humans, Arthur J. Cheng
Digitized Theses
Studies in humans and animals have derived much understanding of neuromuscular function from isometric (static) contractions. In comparison, fewer studies have evaluated dynamic contractions, which are relevant to everyday movements and activities of daily living. The primary purpose of this thesis was to investigate and compare the contributing factors to fatigue during different voluntary contraction tasks. The interpolated twitch technique is commonly used to assess voluntary activation, but with changes in muscle length, musculotendinous slackness can diminish the amplitude of electrically-evoked twitches used to calculate voluntary activation. This might result in erroneous measurements of voluntary activation. Chapter 2 describes an …
Molecular Investigation Of Heme Acquisition In Staphylococcus Aureus, Catherine Chung
Molecular Investigation Of Heme Acquisition In Staphylococcus Aureus, Catherine Chung
Digitized Theses
Staphylococcus aureus is a notorious, Gram-positive, coccoid-shaped bacterium that is pathogenic to humans and animals. It is the culprit of many infectious diseases ranging from boils, impetigo, and food poisoning to more serious diseases such as endocarditis, osteomyelitis,‘ and toxic shock syndrome. However, for S. aureus to survive in the host, nutrients and especially iron must be acquired. S. aureus expresses iron-regulated surface determinant (Isd) proteins that, together, function in the acquisition of heme iron. However, mutants devoid of IsdA or IsdE have only subtle defects in growth on heme as a sole iro» source. Here I demonstrate that an …
Microrna-200b Modulates Vegf Expression In Diabetic Retinopathy, Kara Mcarthur
Microrna-200b Modulates Vegf Expression In Diabetic Retinopathy, Kara Mcarthur
Digitized Theses
Despite the identification of multiple pathogenetic mechanisms in a complex problem like diabetic retinopathy (DR), limited success has been achieved in its medical treatment. Vascular endothelial cells (ECs) undergo a series of metabolic changes in response to sustained hyperglycaemia in diabetes. These metabolic derangements cause the activation of transcription factors and augmented expression of several growth factors and vasoactive factors including vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), resulting in structural and functional alteration in the retina. Small, non-protein coding miRNAs are endogenous regulators of gene expression and have been implicated in a variety of cellular physiologic and pathologic processes. In this …

Evaluating Delays In Prospectively Gated Cardiac Micro-Computed Tomography, Maryam Shirmohammad
Evaluating Delays In Prospectively Gated Cardiac Micro-Computed Tomography, Maryam Shirmohammad
Digitized Theses
Objective: To identify and quantify all sources of time delay affecting prospectively gated cardiac micro-CT imaging in order to select an optimum trigger delay for prospectively gated cardiac imaging. The physiological motion of the heart is a challenge in cardio-thoracic small animal imaging. Prospective and retrospective gating techniques have been developed to freeze cardiac motion and to enable imaging of the heart at different phases of the cardiac cycle. In prospectively gated cardiac micro-CT, there exist several time delays that are inherent in the different processes of prospective gating. Specifically, delays due to the recording of the ECG signal, processing …
The Dehumanization Of Refugees, Stelian Medianu
The Dehumanization Of Refugees, Stelian Medianu
Digitized Theses
The frequent use of animalistic metaphors to depict refugees in Western societies - both by the media and politicians - raises an interesting question: Do people implicitly associate refugees with animals? The current study investigated this research question, and the relation between implicit and explicit measures of dehumanization. Furthermore, the current study looked at how implicit and explicit measures of the dehumanization of refugees relate to individual difference variables such as Social Dominance Orientation and Essentialism, emotions toward refugees, willingness to have contact with refugees, and willingness to provide help to refugees. Using sequential priming and self report measures, the …
Sensory And Physiological Gating Deficits: Long-Term Loss Of Gabaergic Inhibition Following Early Life Seizures, Melanie Claire Crutchley
Sensory And Physiological Gating Deficits: Long-Term Loss Of Gabaergic Inhibition Following Early Life Seizures, Melanie Claire Crutchley
Digitized Theses
It was hypothesized that neuronal inhibition in the hippocampus is altered following repeated seizures in immature rats. To test this, seizures were induced by i.p. injections of GABAb antagonist CGP56999A in postnatal day (PND) 15 Long-Evans rats. Following surgery at ~PND 50 to implant electrodes and cannulae into four locations within the CAl area of the hippocampus, awake adult (PND 60+) rats were tested on paired pulse responses to auditory stimuli and direct electrical stimulation of the hippocampus. Gating of the auditory evoked potential and the electrically induced population excitatory postsynaptic potential was measured by the ratio of the 2nd …
Leibniz And The Wind Machines, Andre Wakefield
Leibniz And The Wind Machines, Andre Wakefield
Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research
Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz visited the Harz Mountains more than thirty times and spent almost three full years there between 1680 and 1686. His aim was to install wind machines for draining the Harz silver mines. Despite Leibniz’s best efforts—his commitment bordered on obsession—the enterprise ultimately failed. There is still disagreement about exactly what happened. Biographers and historians have mostly asserted that Leibniz, a universal genius dedicated to the greater good of science and society, was thwarted by stubborn mining officials. Historians of mining, on the other hand, have generally sided with the “professionals” in the Hannoverian mining administration. This essay …

Élan Vital, Sharon Mealey
CGU MFA Theses
My art explores the inner qualities of life, focusing on adaptability and resiliency. I am interested in the mysterious vital force philosophers call élan vital that animates human beings. I investigate the transitory nature of life where it intersects with élan vital. My paintings accommodate the ephemeral and the perpetual. Assessing Interpretability Of Visual Symbols Of Varied Colors Across Demographic Profiles, Brendan Parker
Assessing Interpretability Of Visual Symbols Of Varied Colors Across Demographic Profiles, Brendan Parker
Theses
Visual symbols are often ambiguous. An icon is meant to convey a particular meaning, but viewers may interpret the image differently. This thesis shows how a viewer`s demographic background and icon color can affect their interpretation of a symbol. A website survey, featuring a library of icons, asked users of varied demographic profiles to interpret each figure presented randomly in one of five colors: black, blue, red, green, and orange. The qualitative text data from the participants` interpretations were compared to the quantitative data from icon and demographic information by means of multinomial logit analysis. The experiment found numerous noteworthy …

A Gift In Exile: Leadership And Creativity In Babette’S Feast, Daniel Loftin
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
I am a storyteller. One of my friends said about me that I think all sorrows can be borne if you put them into a story or tell a story about them, and perhaps this is not entirely untrue. To me, the explanation of life seems to be its melody, its pattern. And I feel in life such an infinite, truly inconceivable fantasy. -Isak Dinesen Isak Dinesen considered any work of art as a manifestation of its own unique inner laws (Whissen, 1973, p. 67). If we accept the quotation above as given, it is germane to ask what constitutes …

On a hot fall afternoon Chad Tillberg and six students grab nets, notebooks, small containers and vials, and tramp up a steep hill in the Coast Range. Loung Ly '11 pounds a round cylinder into the ground every 50 meters along the trail. Carson Moscoso '11 follows, inserting an open vial into each hole, making sure that it is at ground level. When they return in a week, their traps will contain a sampling of the insects that thrive in that environment.
The Role Of Retrieval And Translocation In A Reintroduced Population Of Migratory Whooping Cranes, Sara E. Zimorski, Richard P. Urbanek
The Role Of Retrieval And Translocation In A Reintroduced Population Of Migratory Whooping Cranes, Sara E. Zimorski, Richard P. Urbanek
Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop
Beginning in 2001, a reintroduction project was initiated using captive-reared whooping cranes (Grus americana) to establish a migratory flock in eastern North America. From May 2003 to August 2008, 23 of these birds were retrieved and translocated in 15 separate events. These individuals consisted of 14 cranes that had been led to Florida by ultralight aircraft on their first autumn migration (UL) and 9 cranes that had been directly released in autumn in Wisconsin (DAR). Of 104 (86 UL and 18 DAR) reintroduced individuals that eventually departed from their release location, 22% were later retrieved 1-3 times. Lake …
