Non-Planar Diamond Electrodes For Biomedical Neural Sensing And Stimulating, Jeffrey M. Halpern Jan 2010

Non-Planar Diamond Electrodes For Biomedical Neural Sensing And Stimulating, Jeffrey M. Halpern

Chemical Engineering

Abstract

Conductive diamond has exceptional chemical stability, making it an appealing candidate material for long-term medical device implants. This work describes the characterization, and fabrication of four diamond-based neural devices. A previously developed 30 µm diamond-disk in vitro needle electrode was characterized. The device could detect 1 nM concentration analytes in a flow cell using fast scan cyclic voltammetry, but the fabrication was not reproducible. A novel in vitro diamond device was developed with diamond selectively grown at the tip of a hollow quartz capillary, resulting in a 2-4 µm tip diameter. The diamond tip shape and size were geometrically …

Investigating The Protective Properties Of Milk Phospholipids Against Ultraviolet Light Exposure In A Skin Equivalent Model, Ashley Russell, Andrea Laubscher, Rafael Jiménez-Flores, Lily H. Laiho Jan 2010

Investigating The Protective Properties Of Milk Phospholipids Against Ultraviolet Light Exposure In A Skin Equivalent Model, Ashley Russell, Andrea Laubscher, Rafael Jiménez-Flores, Lily H. Laiho

Dairy Science

Current research on bioactive molecules in milk has documented health advantages of bovine milk and its components. Milk Phospholipids, selected for this study, represent molecules with great potential benefit in human health and nutrition. In this study we used confocal reflectance and multiphoton microscopy to monitor changes in skin morphology upon skin exposure to ultraviolet light and evaluate the potential of milk phospholipids in preventing photodamage to skin equivalent models. The results suggest that milk phospholipids act upon skin cells in a protective manner against the effect of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Similar results were obtained from MTT tissue viability assay …

Digester Selection And Operation For Heybeli Island, Spencer Fackler, Joseph Violetti

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

The Heybeli Digester project originated with Sema Alptekin in her personal research and was incorporated into a Senior Project opportunity at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. The aim of this project was to select and design a plan for the use of a digester for the island of Heybeli, Turkey. The objective of this plan was to incorporate economic, social, and environmental justifications to evaluate if a digester would be a benefit to the community.

Systems Engineering analysis is a vital tool when working with complicated projects that include multiple systems interfacing with one another. Through the use …

Ethics Of Human Enhancement: 25 Questions & Answers, Fritz Allhoff, Patrick Lin, James Moor, John Weckert Jan 2010

Ethics Of Human Enhancement: 25 Questions & Answers, Fritz Allhoff, Patrick Lin, James Moor, John Weckert

Philosophy

This paper presents the principal findings from a three-year research project funded by the US National Science Foundation (NSF) on ethics of human enhancement technologies. To help untangle this ongoing debate, we have organized the discussion as a list of questions and answers, starting with background issues and moving to specific concerns, including: freedom & autonomy, health & safety, fairness & equity, societal disruption, and human dignity. Each question-and answer pair is largely self-contained, allowing the reader to skip to those issues of interest without affecting continuity.

On The Relationship Between Pollen Size And Genome Size, Charles A. Knight, Rachel B. Clancy, Lars Götzenberger, Leighton Dann, Jeremy M. Beaulieu Jan 2010

On The Relationship Between Pollen Size And Genome Size, Charles A. Knight, Rachel B. Clancy, Lars Götzenberger, Leighton Dann, Jeremy M. Beaulieu

Biological Sciences

Here we test whether genome size is a predictor of pollen size. If it were, inferences of ancient genome size would be possible using the abundant paleo-palynolgical record. We performed regression analyses across 464 species of pollen width and genome size. We found a significant positive trend. However, regression analysis using phylogentically independent contrasts did not support the correlated evolution of these traits. Instead, a large split between angiosperms and gymnosperms for both pollen width and genome size was revealed. Sister taxa were not more likely to show a positive contrast when compared to deeper nodes. However, significantly more congeneric …

“Little Language” Project Modules, John Clements, Kathi Fisler Jan 2010

“Little Language” Project Modules, John Clements, Kathi Fisler

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Many computer science departments are debating the role of programming languages in the curriculum. These discussions often question the relevance and appeal of programming-languages content for today's students. In our experience, domain-specific, “little languages” projects provide a compelling illustration of the importance of programming-language concepts. This paper describes projects that prototype mainstream applications such as PowerPoint, TurboTax, and animation scripting. We have used these exercises as modules in non-programming languages courses, including courses for first year students. Such modules both encourage students to study linguistic topics in more depth and provide linguistic perspective to students who might not otherwise be …

Teaching And Learning With Traditional Indigenous Knowledge In The Tall Grass Plains, Kathleen J. Martin, James J. Garrett

Ethnic Studies

This article presents the work of American Indian and Indigenous college students in the United States on a native and heritage plant restoration project at a tribal college. It supports an interdisciplinary approach to studying the natural sciences, and situates the acquisition of knowledge within Dakota oral tradition. Students learned about the grass plains environment and Dakota environmental ethics, sovereignty and values from Traditional Indigenous and Ecological Knowledge (TIKlTEK). The "plant tribes" helped their human caretakers learn important qualities of care and respect. Also included is an educational model based on the project and recommendations for the use of narrative …

Do Animated Banner Ads Hurt Websites? The Moderating Roles Of Website Loyalty And Need For Cognition, Sweta Thota, Ji Hee Song, Val Larsen Jan 2010

Do Animated Banner Ads Hurt Websites? The Moderating Roles Of Website Loyalty And Need For Cognition, Sweta Thota, Ji Hee Song, Val Larsen

Marketing (Formerly Marketing and Law)

While extant research has examined the effectiveness of banner ads, relatively little is known about the effect of animated banner ads on consumers’ attitudes and revisit intentions toward the host website and the brand advertised in the ad. This research contributes to and enhances our understanding of this topic by exploring and identifying consumer responses to animated banner ads on websites and then empirically testing a conceptual model. Results show that exposure to animated banner ads on a website results in consumer skepticism toward the website, which negatively influences their attitudes toward the website and the brand in the ad …

Employees In Performing Nonprofits: Workers Adrift In The Ephemeral Arts, Paul Lorton Jr Jan 2010

Employees In Performing Nonprofits: Workers Adrift In The Ephemeral Arts, Paul Lorton Jr

Business Analytics and Information Systems

In this discussion, we will briefly look at the history of performing artists and at the divergence of performing art forms that could be engaged in "for-profit" from those for whom profit was left behind .. From this context we will examine the 21st century components of the nonprofit performing arts workforce (performers, designers, directors, technical staff, front of the house personnel and management) to delineate the elements and conditions they share with the broader workforce and those which are unique to their chosen careers which include the elements that impinge on their role as fully franchised members of the …

Dealing With Mycotoxin-Contaminated Feeds At Feeding Time, Alvaro Garcia, Bob Thaler Jan 2010

Dealing With Mycotoxin-Contaminated Feeds At Feeding Time, Alvaro Garcia, Bob Thaler

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Under ideal conditions, livestock should be fed grains and byproducts that are “clean” (i.e., free of fungi and/or mycotoxins). Although feeding clean grains and byproducts is ideal, there are times when clean grains are not available locally and farm finances do not allow for substitution of home-harvested grain with purchased grain. When grains or feeds test positive for mycotoxins, there are several approaches that can be taken to reduce the toxic effects to livestock.

The Protection Of Religious Liberty Under The American Constitution, Robert A. Sedler Jan 2010

The Protection Of Religious Liberty Under The American Constitution, Robert A. Sedler

Law Faculty Research Publications

Religious liberty is a favored value under the United States Constitution. The Constitution provides two-fold protection to religious liberty by means of the Establishment Clause and the Free Exercise Clause. The Establishment Clause, sometimes referred to as the separation of church and state, requires that the government maintain a course of complete official neutrality toward religion. The government cannot favor one religion over another, nor can it favor religion over non-religion. The Free Exercise Clause is a textual guarantee of peoples' right to practice their religion and to hold and act on religious beliefs. The First Amendment's guarantee of freedom …

Live Video Database Management Systems, Rui Peng Jan 2010

Live Video Database Management Systems, Rui Peng

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With the proliferation of inexpensive cameras and the availability of high-speed wired and wireless networks, networks of distributed cameras are becoming an enabling technology for a broad range of interdisciplinary applications in domains such as public safety and security, manufacturing, transportation, and healthcare. Today’s live video processing systems on networks of distributed cameras, however, are designed for specific classes of applications. To provide a generic query processing platform for applications of distributed camera networks, we designed and implemented a new class of general purpose database management systems, the live video database management system (LVDBMS). We view networked video cameras as …

Hot Water, Dry Streams: A Tale Of Two Trout, Jack R. Tuholske Jan 2010

Hot Water, Dry Streams: A Tale Of Two Trout, Jack R. Tuholske

All In-stream Flows Material

Norman Maclean’s timeless memoir A River Runs Through It begins with the reflection that in his household “there was no clear line between religion and fly fishing.”1 That zeal remains today; nearly 30 million Americans call themselves fishermen.2 Anglers devoted an aggregate of 517 million user-days pursuing their passion in 2006 and spent billions of dollars to support it.3 Fishing in the western United States holds a special place in fishing lore the world over and for good reason. From the great trout waters of Montana, to the salmon-laden rivers of the west coast, to the sparkling …

A Comparative Guide To The Western States' Public Trust Doctrines: Public Values, Private Rights, And The Evolution Toward An Ecological Public Trust, Robin Kundis Craig Jan 2010

A Comparative Guide To The Western States' Public Trust Doctrines: Public Values, Private Rights, And The Evolution Toward An Ecological Public Trust, Robin Kundis Craig

All In-stream Flows Material

In the arid West, balancing private needs for fresh water to consume against the public values-recreational, aesthetic, and ecological-served by leaving fresh water in situ has tended to favor the private use side. Evidence of this result is both massive and minor, ranging from California's multi-billion-dollar water transportation system,1 to the routine de-watering of the Colorado River so that little to no water reaches the Sea of Cortez,2 to water-related Endangered Species Act lawsuits in dozens of watersheds. 3
