Philosophy Of Intellect And Vision In The De Anima Of Themistius, John Shannon Hendrix Jan 2010

Philosophy Of Intellect And Vision In The De Anima Of Themistius, John Shannon Hendrix

Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications

Themistius (317–c. 387) was born into an aristocratic family and ran a paripatetic school of philosophy in Constantinople in the mid-fourth century, between 345 and 355. He made use of Alexander’s De anima in his commentary on the De anima of Aristotle, which is considered to be the earliest surviving commentary on Aristotle’s work, as Alexander’s commentary itself did not survive. Themistius may also have been influenced by Plotinus, and Porphyry (232–309), whom he criticizes. Themistius refers often to works of Plato, especially the Timaeus, and attempts a synthesis of Aristotle and Plato, a synthesis which was continued in …

Post-Mortem Pregnancy: A Proposed Methodology For The Resolution Of Conflicts Over Whether A Brain Dead Pregnant Woman Should Be Maintained On Life-Sustaining Treatment, Alexis Gregorian Jan 2010

Post-Mortem Pregnancy: A Proposed Methodology For The Resolution Of Conflicts Over Whether A Brain Dead Pregnant Woman Should Be Maintained On Life-Sustaining Treatment, Alexis Gregorian

Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences

In this article, the author examines conflicts over whether to maintain a brain dead pregnant woman on life-sustaining treatment. The author cautions that on the rare occasions when courts are confronted with such a conflict, they should employ a consistent methodology for resolution of the conflict and attempt to honor the wishes of the post-mortem mother and her family. The author draws on relevant areas of law to demonstrate the existence of a legal fiction that protects the interests of post-mortem pregnant women in refusing medical treatment. This article then proceeds to propose a methodology that enables courts to account …

Pharmaceutical Pricing: A Review Of Proposals To Improve Access And Affordability Of Prescription Drugs, Paula Tironi Jan 2010

Pharmaceutical Pricing: A Review Of Proposals To Improve Access And Affordability Of Prescription Drugs, Paula Tironi

Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences

This article discusses how pharmaceutical innovation achieves remarkable improvements in human health but a significant portion of the U.S. population cannot afford prescription drugs. The author examines ways that patent protection, generics, supply chain complexity, and the cost of innovation and promotion affect access and affordability. The author then looks at the influences of marketing strategies and industry trends such as the patent cliff and pipeline for new drugs, innovations in biotechnology and genomics, comparative effectiveness analysis, and payor and employer strategies on drug prices. An analysis of reform proposals in the context of industry trends suggests that promoting generic …

Social Justice Feminism, Kristin (Brandser) Kalsem, Verna L. Williams Jan 2010

Social Justice Feminism, Kristin (Brandser) Kalsem, Verna L. Williams

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

For the past three years, women leaders from national groups, grassroots organizations, academia and beyond have gathered to address dissonance in the women's movement, particularly dissatisfaction with the movement's emphasis on women privileged on account of their race, class, or sexuality. At these meetings of the New Women's Movement Initiative (NWMI), advocates who no longer want to do feminism have articulated a desire for social justice feminism. This article analyzes what such a shift might mean for feminist practice and legal theory.

Drawing on history, specifically the work of the women behind the Brandeis brief in the Muller v. Oregon …

No. 04: Urban Food Production And Household Food Security In Southern African Cities, Jonathan Crush, Alice Hovorka, Daniel Tevara Jan 2010

No. 04: Urban Food Production And Household Food Security In Southern African Cities, Jonathan Crush, Alice Hovorka, Daniel Tevara

African Food Security Urban Network

Optimism about the role of household food production (urban agriculture) in improving the food security of the urban poor has given way to pessimism and even scepticism. This paper critically examines the views of advocates of urban agriculture and suggests that it cannot be isolated from a broader consideration of the changing nature of urban food supply systems in Southern African cities. Urban food production by poor households is currently very limited across the region and even fewer produce for market. While food production is a useful livelihood supplement in some cities and a source of income to some wealthier …

Catalog Of The Coreidae, Or Leaf-Footed Bugs, Of The New World, Richard J. Packauskas Jan 2010

Catalog Of The Coreidae, Or Leaf-Footed Bugs, Of The New World, Richard J. Packauskas

Fort Hays Studies Series

Studies on the New World Coreidae have languished for more than a century. Neglect of these often large, abundant, and occasionally economically important bugs has been due, I believe, to the lack of means to identify them. Most literature treating the New World Coreidae has been restricted to the North American fauna, except for the recent efforts of Brailovsky (1975 to 2007).

The Influence Of Sexual Selection On Behavioral And Physiological Mechanisms Underlying Reproductive Success In Male Cape Ground Squirrels (Xerus Inauris), Mary Beth Manjerovic Jan 2010

The Influence Of Sexual Selection On Behavioral And Physiological Mechanisms Underlying Reproductive Success In Male Cape Ground Squirrels (Xerus Inauris), Mary Beth Manjerovic

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sexual selection is considered a powerful evolutionary force responsible for the enormous diversity found in reproductive morphology, physiology, and behavior. I addressed questions related to selection in the Cape ground squirrel (Xerus inauris), a species characterized as highly social and promiscuous. These attributes often are responsible for variance in male reproductive success and as such, sexual selection theory predicts increased opportunity for sexual selection. I confirm that the predominant mechanism underlying genital evolution and competition for paternity in X. inauris is sperm competition. I find evidence that investment in sperm competition is costly and may reflect immunocompetence. I quantify reproductive …

Alfred Russel Wallace, Geographer, Charles H. Smith Jan 2010

Alfred Russel Wallace, Geographer, Charles H. Smith

DLPS Faculty Publications

Among the great explorers and thinkers who advanced geography in the nineteenth century and helped it evolve into the subject that exists today is a man who is not always connected with the field, Alfred Russel Wallace (1823–1913). Most commonly recognized as ‘the other man’ in the history of the discovery of the principle of natural selection, Wallace’s commitment to the study of landscape and its physical, biological, and human elements was lifelong, and resulted in a wide range of contributions to biogeography, physical geography, human geography, and ethnography. In this year of the double anniversaries of Charles Darwin’s birth …

Landscape Assessment Of A Stable Aspen Community In Southern Utah, Usa, Paul C. Rogers, A. Joshua Leffler, R. Ryel Jan 2010

Landscape Assessment Of A Stable Aspen Community In Southern Utah, Usa, Paul C. Rogers, A. Joshua Leffler, R. Ryel

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Recent reports of rapid die-off of aspen (Populus tremuloides), coupled with vigorous debate over longterm reduction of aspen cover in western North America, has prompted considerable research given the importance of this forest type for economic and non-economic interests. Despite this interest, indicators of aspen conditions are poorly understood, and there is a lack of systematic monitoring of stable aspen landscapes. Stable aspen are defined here as being predominantly aspen overstorey (>80% basal area) with little or no conifer regeneration. We examined a putative stable aspen landscape in southern Utah and addressed (1) stand structure and (2) indicators of …

Scale: A Scalable Framework For Efficiently Clustering Transactional Data, Hua Yan, Keke Chen, Ling Liu, Zhang Yi Jan 2010

Scale: A Scalable Framework For Efficiently Clustering Transactional Data, Hua Yan, Keke Chen, Ling Liu, Zhang Yi

Kno.e.sis Publications

This paper presents SCALE, a fully automated transactional clustering framework. The SCALE design highlights three unique features. First, we introduce the concept of Weighted Coverage Density as a categorical similarity measure for efficient clustering of transactional datasets. The concept of weighted coverage density is intuitive and it allows the weight of each item in a cluster to be changed dynamically according to the occurrences of items. Second, we develop the weighted coverage density measure based clustering algorithm, a fast, memory-efficient, and scalable clustering algorithm for analyzing transactional data. Third, we introduce two clustering validation metrics and show that these domain …

What Is The Taxonomic Identity Of Minnesota Wolves?, L. David Mech Jan 2010

What Is The Taxonomic Identity Of Minnesota Wolves?, L. David Mech

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

The taxonomic identity of the historical and current wolf (Canis lupus L., 1758 or Canis lycaon Schreber, 1775 or their hybrids) population in Minnesota (MN) and the Great Lakes region has been, and continues to be, controversial. So too does its legal status under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. This review summarizes the morphological and genetic information about that population and concludes that historically the MN population consisted of a gray wolf (C. lupus) in the west and an eastern type (Canis lupus lycaon or C. lycaon) in the east with intergrades or hybrids between …

Synthesis, Antiviral And Contraceptive Activities Of Nucleoside–Sodium Cellulose Sulfate Acetate And Succinate Conjugates, Hitesh K. Agarwal, Anil Kumar, Gustavo F. Doncel, Keykavous Parang Jan 2010

Synthesis, Antiviral And Contraceptive Activities Of Nucleoside–Sodium Cellulose Sulfate Acetate And Succinate Conjugates, Hitesh K. Agarwal, Anil Kumar, Gustavo F. Doncel, Keykavous Parang

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Chemical conjugates between sodium cellulose sulfate (CS), displaying contraceptive and HIV-entry inhibiting properties, and nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) (3′-azido-2′,3′-dideoxythymidine (AZT), 3′-fluoro-2′,3′-dideoxythymidine (FLT), or 2′,3′-dideoxy-3′-thiacytidine (3TC)) were designed to simultaneously provide contraceptive and anti-HIV activity. Two linkers, acetate and succinate, were used to conjugate the nucleoside analogs with CS. The conjugates containing cellulose sulfate-acetate (CSA) (e.g., AZT–CSA and FLT–CSA) were found to be more potent than CS and other conjugates (e.g., AZT–succinate–CS, and FLT–succinate–CS). The presence of both sulfate and the acetate groups on cellulose were critical for generating maximum anti-HIV activity. In addition to showing equal potency against wild-type …

Dexamethasone Transcriptionally Increases The Expression Of The Pregnane X Receptor And Synergistically Enhances Pyrethroid Esfenvalerate In The Induction Of Cytochrome P450 3a23, Deshi Shi, Dongfang Yang, Bingfang Yan Jan 2010

Dexamethasone Transcriptionally Increases The Expression Of The Pregnane X Receptor And Synergistically Enhances Pyrethroid Esfenvalerate In The Induction Of Cytochrome P450 3a23, Deshi Shi, Dongfang Yang, Bingfang Yan

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

The pregnane X receptor (PXR) is recognized as a key regulator for the induction of a large number of genes in drug metabolism and transport. The transactivation of PXR is enhanced by the glucocorticoid dexamethasone and the enhancement is linked to the induction of PXR in humans and rats. The present study was undertaken to determine the mechanism for the induction and ascertain the synergistic effect on the expression of CYP3A23, a rat PXR target. In primary hepatocytes, significant induction of PXR was detected as early as 2 h after the treatment and the maximal induction occurred at 1 μM …

Plasma Pharmacokinetics And Tissue Disposition Of Novel Dextran–Methylprednisolone Conjugates With Peptide Linkers In Rats, Suman Penugonda, Hitesh K. Agarwal, Keykavous Parang, Reza Mehvar Jan 2010

Plasma Pharmacokinetics And Tissue Disposition Of Novel Dextran–Methylprednisolone Conjugates With Peptide Linkers In Rats, Suman Penugonda, Hitesh K. Agarwal, Keykavous Parang, Reza Mehvar

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

The plasma and tissue disposition of two novel dextran prodrugs of methylprednisolone (MP) containing one (DMP‐1) or five (DMP‐5) amino acids as linkers were studied in rats. Single 5‐mg/kg doses (MP equivalent) of each prodrug or MP were administered intravenously, and blood and tissue samples were collected. Prodrug and drug concentrations were quantitated using HPLC, and noncompartmental pharmacokinetic parameters were estimated. Whereas conjugation of MP with dextran in both prodrugs substantially decreased the clearance of the drug by ∼200‐fold, the accumulations of the drug in the liver, spleen, and kidneys were significantly increased by conjugation. However, the extent of accumulation …

Pregnane X Receptor Is Required For Interleukin-6-Mediated Down-Regulation Of Cytochrome P450 3a4 In Human Hepatocytes, Jian Yang, Chunshu Hao, Dongfang Yang, Deshi Shi, Xiulong Song, Xiaofei Luan, Gang Hu, Bingfang Yan Jan 2010

Pregnane X Receptor Is Required For Interleukin-6-Mediated Down-Regulation Of Cytochrome P450 3a4 In Human Hepatocytes, Jian Yang, Chunshu Hao, Dongfang Yang, Deshi Shi, Xiulong Song, Xiaofei Luan, Gang Hu, Bingfang Yan

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) is the most abundant cytochrome P450 enzyme in human liver and metabolizes more than 60% of prescribed drugs in human body. Patients with liver conditions such as cirrhosis show increased secretion of cytokines (e.g., interleukin-6) and decreased capacity of oxidation of many drugs. In this study, we provided molecular evidence that cytokine secretion directly contributed to the decreased capacity of oxidative biotransformation in human liver. After human hepatocytes were treated with IL-6, the expression of CYP3A4 decreased at both mRNA and protein levels, so did the CYP3A4 enzymatic activity. Meanwhile, the repression of CYP3A4 by IL-6 …
