Determination Of Palm Biodiesel/Petroleum Diesel Blend Ratio Through Spectroscopic Method / Alinda Samsuri, Alinda Samsuri
Student Works (2000-2009)
Biodiesel, defined as the alkyl esters (usually methyl esters) of vegetable oils, is miscible with conventional petroleum diesel fuel at all blend levels. Blends of biodiesel with conventional petroleum diesel fuel represent a common utilization of biodiesel. The Malaysian Government has initiated the implementation of palm biodiesel since 2007 and the proposed blend is B5. Accordingly, there is interest and need for the development of methods for determining or verifying the blend level of biodiesel in petroleum diesel. To date, the most widely used and acceptable method for determination of biodiesel blend levels is using IR spectroscopy. The present study …

Student Works (2000-2009)
Clostridium perfringens (CP) is an anaerobic, spore forming bacterium that is emerging as a preferred faecal pollution indicator. In the local scene, little is known about the density and toxinotype of CP in river water, and how does river discharge affects the density. Therefore, water samples were taken from three Malaysian rivers, Sungai Bernam, Sungai Selangor and Tengi Canal between April 2007 and January 2008 to examine the CP densities and toxinotypes. The rivers were selected because of their differences in adjacent land usage. Sungai Selangor reported lower CP isolation rate ranging between 0 to 25% but higher CP densities …

Student Works (2000-2009)
Per capita generation of municipal solid waste (MSW) in Malaysia has reached 1.3kg per day giving a total generation of more than 31000 tonnes daily. All the MSW collected are disposed into 260 landfills or dumps with 90% of the landfills being non-sanitary. Due to lack of proper gas collection facilities, almost all the methane produced are released passively to the atmosphere.Malaysian landfills produce 1.3-7.5 L/kg/year of methane gas. Since methane is 23 times more harmful as greenhouse gas than CO2, it is essential to mitigate its emission from landfills. One option to reduce methane emissions is to oxidize the …

Estimation And Outlier Detection Of Random Coefficient Autoregressive Models / Norli Anida Binti Abdullah, Norli Anida Abdullah
Student Works (2000-2009)
The class of random coe±cient autoregressive (RCA) models has been con-sidered in many areas of science due to its rich applications. We review two methods of RCA parameter estimation, namely least squares and estimating functions. An iterative method based on the estimating functions is proposed to improve the existing RCA parameter estimation. This study is then fol-lowed by investigating the robustness of the three estimates when outliers exist in the RCA process. Simulation studies are carried out to investigate the per-formance of parameter estimation and robustness of the estimates.Further, the outlier detection procedure for the RCA process is proposed. In this …
