Learning From Experience In Urban Programming: The Case Of Shahar Project In Bangladesh, S Rahman Jan 2009

Learning From Experience In Urban Programming: The Case Of Shahar Project In Bangladesh, S Rahman

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The article offers a reflective analysis of various problems encountered and lessons learned in implementing a programme to improve the livelihood security of the urban poor in secondary cities of Bangladesh. The study is based on the author's involvement as an external action-research partner, and a review of relevant secondary literature. A number of key lessons emerge for the success of project operations. These are the need for (1) a clear understanding of the links between project activities and project objectives by all staff; (2) capacity building for all staff tailored to their needs; (3) clear targeting criteria and programme …

Impact Of Land Fragmentation And Resource Ownership On Productivity And Efficiency: The Case Of Rice Producers In Bangladesh, S Rahman, M Rahman Jan 2009

Impact Of Land Fragmentation And Resource Ownership On Productivity And Efficiency: The Case Of Rice Producers In Bangladesh, S Rahman, M Rahman

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The paper analyzes the impact of land fragmentation and ownership of resources on productivity and technical efficiency in rice production in Bangladesh using farm level survey data. Results reveal that land fragmentation has a significant detrimental effect on productivity and efficiency as expected. The elasticity estimates of land fragmentation reveal that a 1% increase in land fragmentation reduces rice output by 0.05% and efficiency by 0.03%. On the other hand, ownership of key resources (land, family labour, and draft animals) significantly increases efficiency. The mean elasticity estimates reveal that a 1% increase in family labour and owned draft animal improve …

Farm Productivity And Efficiency In Rural Bangladesh: The Role Of Education Revisited, Mn Asadullah, S Rahman Jan 2009

Farm Productivity And Efficiency In Rural Bangladesh: The Role Of Education Revisited, Mn Asadullah, S Rahman

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

This article reassesses the debate over the role of education in farm production in Bangladesh using a large dataset on rice producing households from 141 villages. Average and stochastic production frontier functions are estimated to ascertain the effect of education on productivity and efficiency. A full set of proxies for farm education stock variables are incorporated to investigate the 'internal' as well as 'external' returns to education. The external effect is investigated in the context of rural neighbourhoods. Our analysis reveals that in addition to raising rice productivity and boosting potential output, household education significantly reduces production inefficiencies. However, we …

Cauda Equina Syndrome Following A Lumbar Puncture., Alexandra J. Sinclair, Camille Carroll, Brendan Davies Jan 2009

Cauda Equina Syndrome Following A Lumbar Puncture., Alexandra J. Sinclair, Camille Carroll, Brendan Davies

Peninsula Medical School

Lumbar puncture (LP), a common diagnostic procedure, is usually associated with low morbidity. We describe the case of a 29-year-old woman who underwent a non-traumatic LP in the setting of normal coagulation. Cauda equina syndrome subsequently developed secondary to an extradural spinal haematoma. Avoidance, identification and management of this uncommon complication are discussed. Iatrogenic cauda equina syndrome following LP is rare, but can cause significant morbidity. Our patient's experience and our review of the literature highlight that: (i) normal coagulation and a non-traumatic LP do not exclude this diagnostic possibility; (ii) early recognition determines the management and prognosis, as 50% …

Regulation Of The Fibrosis And Angiogenesis Promoter Sparc/Osteonectin In Human Adipose Tissue By Weight Change, Leptin, Insulin, And Glucose., Katrina Kos, Steve Wong, Bee Tan, Anders Gummesson, Margareta Jernas, Niclas Franck, David Kerrigan, Fredrik H. Nystrom, Lena M.S. Carlsson, Harpal S. Randeva, Jonathan H. Pinkney, John P.H. Wilding

Peninsula Medical School

OBJECTIVE: Matricellular Secreted Protein, Acidic and Rich in Cysteine (SPARC), originally discovered in bone as osteonectin, is a mediator of collagen deposition and promotes fibrosis. Adipose tissue collagen has recently been found to be linked with metabolic dysregulation. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that SPARC in human adipose tissue is influenced by glucose metabolism and adipokines. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Serum and adipose tissue biopsies were obtained from morbidly obese nondiabetic subjects undergoing bariatric surgery and lean control subjects for analysis of metabolic markers, SPARC, and various cytokines (RT-PCR). Additionally, 24 obese subjects underwent a very-low-calorie diet of 1,883 kJ …

Longitudinal Evaluation Of South West Peninsula Deanery F1 Doctors, Nicola Brennan, Oonagh Corrigan Jan 2009

Longitudinal Evaluation Of South West Peninsula Deanery F1 Doctors, Nicola Brennan, Oonagh Corrigan

Peninsula Medical School

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY.BackgroundIn 2007 and 2008, the first and second cohorts of Peninsula Medical School (PMS) students graduated. Of the 232 graduates, 75% (174) gained Foundation Year 1 (F1) positions in the South West Peninsula Deanery (SWPD).ObjectivesThe objectives of the study are:1. to provide a systematic evaluation of the performance and preparedness of the first and second cohorts of PMS graduates based in the F1 programme in the SWPD;2. to compare the performance and preparedness of PMS graduates with graduates of other medical schools based in the F1 programme in the SWPD;3. to explore F1 doctors’ experience of transition from medical …
