This thesis addresses issues relating to the development of a robotic capability to assist a human in performing a complex task. It describes research and experiments involving a robot that assists a human to herd an animal. The novel focus of this work is that the robot is able to perceive the human's intentions by interpreting the human's movements without any explicit communication from the human. Furthermore, the robot is able to detect if the human is absent or unable to herd, and in that case, it herds the animal autonomously. A herding framework is developed based on low-stress herding …

The major purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which two job resources, autonomy and supervisor support, and two personality traits, openness to experience and extraversion, were related to job engagement and whether they interact with each other to influence job engagement. In particular, this study examined whether personality traits moderate the relationship between job resources and job engagement. Using a sample of 162 full-time employees, the results showed that only autonomy and supervisor support related significantly to job engagement even when personality traits were taken into consideration. The Left-Isolation (LI) construction is a clausal construction that licenses long-distance dependencies and is responsible for a noun phrase object, indirect object or object of a preposition appearing before the subject of a sentence instead of in its canonical position after the verb. It is used in many different types of sentences, all of which have the pragmatics of drawing attention to the left-isolated element. Rapid dissolved oxygen (DO) depletion, caused by inorganic chemical oxygen demand (COD) of re-suspended sediment compounds, has been documented in few studies, yet fish kills occur often from the process. Pescadero Lagoon, California, USA, a bar-built lagoon that suffers annual fish kills caused by rapid mixing-induced hypoxia upon sandbar breach, was studied to investigate the potential for COD of re-suspended sediment to deplete oxygen. In-situ chamber mixing trials demonstrated that re-suspended sediment can exert powerful oxygen demand on receiving waters. Surface DO depletion upon bar breach was too severe to be explained solely by mixing of the anoxic hypolimnion into …

This thesis is a qualitative case study about two children with autism spectrum disorder and the role of music in their lives. It explores how music serves as a non-threatening medium for learning and developing skills necessary to function successfully in life. The stories of the children and their parents are shared through their personal account and the author's observations. The literature in the field reveals that a structured/functional use of music helps communication, social interaction, appropriate behavior, motor skills, and academics in children with autism. This study examined the Job Demands-Resources theory in relation to engagement using a longitudinal design. The main purpose of this longitudinal study was to investigate the nature of work engagement over time. Specifically, it examined if role stressors (a job demand) were predictive of work engagement measured one year later. Additionally, this study investigated the possible moderating or buffering effect of coworker support (a job resource) on the relationship between role stressors and later work engagement. A total of 96 (70% full-time and 30% part-time) library employees participated in this study. A moderated hierarchical regression analysis indicated that baseline engagement …

Structure Of The Skagit Gneiss Complex In Diablo Lake Area, North Cascades, Wa, Niki Everette Wintzer

The crystalline core of the North Cascades is part of a thick (>55 km) 96-45 Ma continental magmatic arc. The highest-grade part of the arc is the Skagit Gneiss Complex, composed mostly of partially migmatitic amphibolite-facies orthogneiss, banded biotite gneiss, and paragneiss. The typically NW-striking foliation and mostly gently SE-plunging lineation formed dominantly between 69 and 51 Ma. Four-fold generations are recorded in the study area, some of which formed from 51 to 46 Ma. The prominent upright km-scale folds are similar to Eocene folds in the southern part of the Skagit Gneiss Complex and suggest at least a …

The input objection to reflective equilibrium (RE) claims that the method fails as a method of moral justification. According to the objection, considered moral judgments (CMJs) are not truth-conducive. Because the method uses inputs that are not credible, the method does not generate justified moral beliefs. The objection is solved by reinterpreting RE using contemporary developments in ethical intuitionism. The first half of the thesis sets up the input objection, explores potential responses to the objection, and uncovers the best way to solve the objection. Photonic crystals are periodic nanostructures used to control the propagation of electromagnetic waves. Depending on geometry and refractive index contrast between adjacent regions, periodic variation of the refractive index can result in a photonic band gap or non-allowed set of frequencies that cannot propagate through the crystal. Defects can be introduced at photonic crystal lattice sites, resulting in localized modes that lie within the photonic gap. Such defect cavities can be tuned to resonant frequencies of a defect mode and whole planes or lines of defects can be fabricated in photonic crystals resulting in optical confinement of defect modes. As the rest of the papers in this symposium issue demonstrate, aggregate litigationi raises difficult, often intractable choice-of-law issues for judges, as well as for litigants and their lawyers. Typically, judges must choose among rules governing not only substantive law, but also statutes of limitations, allocation of damages, and punitive damages. 2 What is less well-recognized is that aggregate litigation may also present difficult choice-of-law issues regarding the ethical conduct of the lawyers involved in these cases. Modern scholars regularly assert that Islamic law contains privacy protections similar to those of the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Two Quranic verses in particular - one that commands Muslims not to enter homes without permission, and one that commands them not to 'spy' - are held up, along with reports from the Traditions (Sunna) that repeat and embellish on these commands, as establishing rules that forbid warrantless searches and seizures by state actors and require the exclusion of evidence obtained in violation of these rules.
