Objectives: Spreading odontogenic infections (SOI) are the commonest type of serious infections encountered in the orofacial region. A prospective multi-centre study was conducted in the West of Scotland to investigate the contributing role of social, systemic and microbial factors in the pathogenesis of SOI. Methods: Twenty-five patients with severe odontogenic infections were recruited over a period of six months. At admission, clinical assessment included temperature rise, haematological and biochemical investigations. Demographic data, social and past medical histories were obtained. Microbiology samples were collected to identify causative microorganisms and the clinical management of each infection was recorded. Results: Most infections were …

Many cucurbits, such as cucumbers, squashes and pumpkins, depend on pollinating bees in order to set fruit. However, fruit yield and progeny vigor in these plants generally decreases as heterospecific pollen deposition increases. We studied how the spatial area dedicated to cucumbers (Cucumis sativis), versus other flowering plants, influenced the deposition of conspecific and heterospecific pollen on cucumber plants in New York City community gardens. We also examined the effect of garden size on conspecific and heterospecific pollen deposition on cucumber plants. Educational theories have roots. They have roots in broader philosophies, conceptions of the nature of reality, and the theories utilized in classrooms to teach have implications for broader society. The author takes a presuppostitional view and shows that all systems have most basic beliefs that are un-provable. So at the heart of any form of interpretive schema or paradigm is faith in that schema. The author discusses the role of theories of truth, how fact-constructivism embraces a relativist position that is self-refuting, and ultimately is untenable absent a suspension of laws of logic. The techniques of using meaningful touch, speaking words of honor, encouragement, and affirmation, and making an active commitment to student success are supported both by Scripture and research in educational best practices.

There is a shortage of material which teaches children and pre–teens how to read and study the Bible. It is important for educators to help them become good Bible readers and interpreters. This paper presents five crucial steps that are important to instruct children and pre–teens in the skills necessary to work out the appropriate meaning and application of the Biblical text. Because children and adolescents learn by “doing,” this article suggests core activities to help them understand and develop Bible interpretation skills.

While the preponderance of online learning is geared toward adult learners, its use in the United States for secondary education students has been around for over a decade and has a growing literature. As online learning for adolescents gains popularity, questions are being raised about the quality, strategies, and effectiveness of the programs being offered. There are several delivery methods of online learning from the full-time virtual school to the ‘blended’ model. This review of the literature will provide an understanding of current theory and practice online learning for secondary students, recommendations for implementation, and where it may lead.

The Relationship Between Selected Predictor Variables And Successful Completion Of Online Courses At A Selected Theological Institution, Murray J. Williams

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between selected variables (age, gender, ethnicity, marital status, financial assistance, student status, number of previous online courses, current online course load) and grade achievement of nontraditional, online students at a selected theological institution. The participants consisted of 899 students who enrolled in 37 online courses offered by the institution during Spring 2007. Logistic regression and descriptive analysis were used to analyze the data. The findings from the study showed that three of the independent variables (age, ethnicity, and number of previous online courses) were predictors of grade of achievement. These …

While the admissions rate for Black students is now equivalent to that of White students, there is still a large gap in persistence and graduation rates. Among Black students there is a significant graduation rate gap between Black male and female students. The writer used a qualitative research design to make preliminary observations of the decisions to persist in college of a small sample of first-generation African American male students. As students in a Christian university, the dominant role of faith in decisions to persist emerged as an important theme.

Community gardens are heterogeneous environments that integrate environmental restoration, community activism, social interactions, cultural expression, and food security. As such, they provide a context for learning that addresses multiple societal goals, including a populace that is scientifically literate, practices environmental stewardship, and participates in civic life. Several theories are useful in describing the learning that occurs in community gardens, including those focusing on learning as acquisition of content by individuals, learning as interaction with other individuals and the environment and as increasingly skilled levels of participation in a community of practice, and social learning among groups of stakeholders leading to …

A variety of crops are grown in New York City community gardens. Although the production of many crops benefits from pollination by bees, little is known about bee abundance in urban community gardens or which crops are specifically dependent on bee pollination. In 2005, we compiled a list of crop plants grown within 19 community gardens in New York City and classified these plants according to their dependence on bee pollination. In addition, using mark-recapture methods, we estimated the abundance of a potentially important pollinator within New York City urban gardens, the common eastern bumble bee (Bombus impatiens). …

The study of measurement invariance in polytomous items that targets individual score levels is known as differential step functioning (DSF; Penfield, 2007, 2008). DSF methods provide specific information describing the manifestation of the invariance effect within particular score levels and therefore serve a diagnostic role in identifying the individual score levels involved in the item's invariance effect. The analysis of DSF requires the creation of a set of dichotomizations of the item response variable. Persons with spinal cord injury (SCI) suffer life-long consequences including paralysis, loss of involuntary bodily functions, and chronic pain. A subset of SCI patients develop neuropathic pain (NP), a chronic condition resulting from damage to the spinal cord. Hyperexcitability of spinal cord sensory neurons near damaged tissue is believed to underlie SCI-related NP. Although many therapies have been employed clinically to combat SCI-NP, few give satisfactory long-term relief. Transplantation of cells that release GABA, a molecule that inhibits neuronal activity, is being explored as an alternative to current SCI-NP therapies. This dissertation utilizes data from four sub-watersheds in the Little River Experimental Watershed, GA to develop models to improve forecast predictions related to the management of surface-water pollution due to non-point source runoff. Non-point source pollution is the primary cause of US surface-water quality impairment and a main transport mechanism for pathogens and other pollutants into receiving surface water bodies (US EPA 2008). Marc-Antoine Charpentier's setting of the Messe pour Monsieur Mauroy is the only composition in his oeuvre which was dedicated to a particular person. Each of Charpentier's twelve mass settings is unique; this mass setting is his longest at over 1,500 measures. Charpentier masses are diverse: one composition for women's voices, a mass for instruments only, a Christmas mass, as well as settings of the Requiem text. This document traces the history of the missa concertata up until the time of Charpentier. It examines the intricacies of Charpentier's compositional process: form, melody, harmony, and self-borrowing. This paper also analyzes recent findings …

Tropical cyclones (TCs) often change intensity as they move over mesoscale oceanic features, as a function of the oceanic mixed layer (OML) thermal response (cooling) to the storm's wind stress. For example, observational evidence indicates that TCs in the Gulf of Mexico rapidly weaken over cyclonic cold core eddies (CCEs) where the cooling response is enhanced, and they rapidly intensify over anticyclonic warm features such as the Loop Current (LC) and Warm Core Eddies (WCEs) where OML cooling is reduced. Sequence stratigraphy relates changes in vertical and lateral facies distribution to relative changes in sea level. These relative changes in carbonates effect early diagenesis, types of pores, cementation and dissolution patterns. As a result, in carbonates, relative changes in sea level significantly impact the lithology, porosity, diagenesis, bed and bounding surfaces which are all factors that control fracture patterns. This study explores these relationships by integrating stratigraphy with fracture analysis and petrophysical properties.
