The Islamic Missionary work method of the contemporary actual life of the United Arab Emirates was due to complete and enormous efforts of the different effective institutions in the society to reach the best positive and vocational way in which young people are involved. I also stated in my research the phenomenon of the Islamic mission before and after the Emirates union in all its aspects; its ways, activities and its thinkers. I also dealt with the ways used during the new era and the institutions that work with youth in all fields: religious, cultural and sport. In addition to …

What Scholarship Of Teaching? Why Bother?, Daphne Pan
What Scholarship Of Teaching? Why Bother?, Daphne Pan
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Excerpt: Since its ‘launch’ a couple of decades ago, “scholarship of teaching” has been increasingly acknowledged on many campuses in and beyond North America. It has been incorporated into mission statements and strengthened the professionalisation of teaching and concomitant interest in faculty development, peer review and the teaching portfolio. Boyer (1997) reported that the need to recognise and find an appropriate balance between different forms of scholarship has led the majority of campuses in the United States to revise their standards for tenure and promotion, while there have also been changes...

Two Minute Training In Class Significantly Increases The Use Of Professional Formatting In Student To Faculty Email Correspondence, Nancy Aguilar-Roca, Adrienne Williams, R Warrior, Diane O’Dowd
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Many university faculty value email as an important tool for communicating with colleagues, but express frustration with a high incidence of unprofessional email correspondence from students. The goals of this study were to document the frequency of specific formatting mistakes that contribute to faculty’s unfavorable perception of student emails and to determine if training could reduce these errors. We analyzed emails from students to three instructors of different rank and gender co-teaching two sections of a large introductory biology class: one section received two minutes of basic email etiquette training, the second section served as the control. We report a …
Personal Reflection:From Regional University To Premier Research Institution: Multiple Forms And Applications Of Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning, Jeffery Galle
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
This reflective essay describes the distinct ways that the scholarship of teaching and university has been integrated into the academic culture at two very different universities with the suggestion that universities who actively study their own relationship and history with SoTL can make some empowering discoveries.

‘Additional Comments’: The Final Word In Assessment For Humanities Undergraduates, Despina Michael
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
A key component to the scholarship of teaching and learning (SOTL) is reflection on teaching methodology and, in particular, assessment practices and how they impact on undergraduate students. The aim of this article is to explore how one particular technique—the written expression of ‘additional comments’ in a generic assessment criteria-based form—can be utilised effectively as a means of clear, constructive feedback and simultaneously as a means of engagement in dialogue with students. Dialogue is, in fact, postulated as one of the most important pedagogical tools underpinning and informing deep learning. Understanding how our words leave an impact on our students …

Faith And Politics In The Post-Secular Age: The Promise Of President Obama, Francis J. Mootz Iii
McGeorge School of Law Scholarly Articles
If the modern era is properly characterized as the 'age of secularism' - a time when constitutional democracies finally have shed the last vestiges of church authority from the political realm and embrace a rationalist and humanist perspective - then the United States appears to be outside the Western mainstream. In this paper I explore how the relationship between politics and religious faith in the United States might be seen as part of the narrative of secularism that defines most other Western countries, even as the differences in the American experience might suggest an evolution of this narrative. My thesis …

Benthic Microalgae On The Louisiana Inner Continental Shelf: Biomass, Distribution, And Contribution To Benthic Food-Webs, Mark Alan Grippo
Benthic Microalgae On The Louisiana Inner Continental Shelf: Biomass, Distribution, And Contribution To Benthic Food-Webs, Mark Alan Grippo
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Phytoplankton and benthic microalgae (BMA) may both contribute to the sediment organic matter pool available to benthic consumers. Recent studies have highlighted the presence and ecological roles of benthic microalgae (BMA) on the continental shelf but studies from the north-central Gulf of Mexico are limited. Here we use photosynthetic pigment analysis and microscopic examination of sediment microalgae to investigate how the biomass, composition, and degradation state of sediment-associated microalgae varies along the Louisiana inner shelf across a continuum of water column and sediment conditions. The contribution of microalgae to higher trophic levels was also examined. Three sandy shoals and surrounding …
Biogenesis Of Iron-Sulfur Clusters And Intracellular Iron Metabolism, Jacob Philip Bitoun
Biogenesis Of Iron-Sulfur Clusters And Intracellular Iron Metabolism, Jacob Philip Bitoun
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Iron-sulfur ([Fe-S]) clusters represent one of natures most diverse and ubiquitous protein prosthetic groups. [Fe-S] proteins are integral for diverse biological processes. Reconstitution of apo-proteins can occur by exogenously adding excess iron and sulfide. However, due to the toxicity of iron and sulfide, it is most likely that proteins coordinate [Fe-S] cluster assembly in cells. The first part of this dissertation addressed the iron donor for [Fe-S] cluster assembly. Recently, it has been shown that IscA is capable of binding iron with an association constant of 3.0 x 1019M-1. In addition, iron-loaded IscA is capable of …

This essay addresses the question whether one should support regulatory proposals that one believes are, standing alone, bad public policy in the hope that they will do such harm that they will ultimately produce (likely unintended) good results. For instance, one may regard a set of proposed regulations as foolish and likely to hobble the industry regulated, but perhaps desirable if one believes that we would be better off without that industry. I argue that television broadcasting is such an industry, and thus that we should support new regulations that will make broadcasting unprofitable, to hasten its demise. But it …

BACKGROUND: Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors are known to improve clinical outcome and ventricular function in adults with heart failure. Infants with single-ventricle physiology show abnormalities in ventricular function as well as poor growth. The ability of an ACE inhibitor to preserve ventricular function and improve growth in these infants is unknown.
METHODS: The Pediatric Heart Network designed a randomized, double-blind trial to compare outcomes in infants with single-ventricle physiology receiving enalapril or placebo. Neonates < or =45 days old were eligible. The primary outcome is weight-for-age Z-score at 14 months of age. Secondary outcomes include other measures of somatic growth, laboratory and functional measures of heart failure, developmental indices, measures of ventricular size and function, and the relationship of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system genotype to the response to enalapril. The incidence and spectrum of adverse events will also be compared between treatment groups.
RESULTS: A total of 1,245 neonates were screened and 533 (43%) were eligible. The consent rate was 43%; 230 subjects were enrolled. Parental reluctance to …

Information and communication technologies have permeated almost all areas of society and become an important component of daily functioning for most Australians. This is particularly true for Internet and mobile phone technology. The majority of Australian households (67% in 2007 – 2008) have access to the Internet and over 11 million Australians use the Internet as an integral part of their personal, social and occupational activities. By mid-2008, there were over 22 million active mobile phones being used in Australia, which equates to more than one phone for every citizen. There are many benefits associated with Internet and mobile phone …

Fitting Weibull Acd Models To High Frequency Transactions Data : A Semi-Parametric Approach Based On Estimating Functions, Kok Haur Ng, David E. Allen, Shelton Peiris
Research outputs pre 2011
Autoregressive conditional duration (ACD) models play an important role in financial modeling. This paper considers the estimation of the Weibull ACD model using a semiparametric approach based on the theory of estimating functions (EF). We apply the EF and the maximum likelihood (ML) methods to a data set given in Tsay (2003, p203) to compare these two methods. It is shown that the EF approach is easier to apply in practice and gives better estimates than the MLE. Results show that the EF approach is compatible with the ML method in parameter estimation. Furthermore, the computation speed for the EF …

A Semiparametric Approach To A Nonlinear Acd Model, Pipat Wongsaart, Jiti Gao, David E. Allen
Research outputs pre 2011
We introduce in this paper a new semiparametric approach to a nonlinear ACD model, namely the Semiparametric ACD (SEMI-ACD) model. This new model is more flexible in the sense that the data are allowed to speak for themselves, without a hypothetical assumption being imposed arbitrarily on its key component. Moreover, it enables a much more thorough examination of the intertemporal importance of the conditional duration on the ACD process. Our experimental analysis suggests that the new model possesses a sound asymptotic character, while its performance is also robust across data generating processes and assumptions about the conditional distribution of the …

Untangling The Net: The Scope Of Content Caught By Mandatory Internet Filtering, Catharine Lumby, Lelia Green, John Hartley
Research outputs pre 2011
The following report considers a number of key challenges the Australian Federal Government faces in designing the regulatory framework and the reach of its planned mandatory internet filter. Previous reports on the mandatory filtering scheme have concentrated on the filtering technologies, their efficacy, their cost and their likely impact on the broadband environment. This report focuses on the scope and the nature of content that is likely to be caught by the proposed filter and on identifying associated public policy implications.
We recognise that the Federal Government faces real challenges in balancing the risks posed by the online media environment …

The safety of members of the school community is essential to enhance the academic, social development and well being of young people. In line with the United Nations' Convention on the Rights of the Child, the National Safe Schools Framework (NSSF) is regarded as.a highly innovative, collaborative effort on behalf of the Commonwealth, State and Territory Governments to foster the development and implementation of a series of whole-of-school initiatives to produce an integrated national policy for the prevention and early intervention of bullying and other aggressive and violent behaviours.
Yet despite the impact of the NSSF in terms of reducing …

I am asked to present on the "shortcomings of the Western model of legality based on a professionalized, individualistic and highly formalistic approach to justice" as a way to understanding if "the West can develop today a form of legality which is relational rather than based on litigation as a zero sum game, learning from face to face social organizations in which individuals understand the law" - presumably in the context of the imperial and modem Chinese legal systems which I know best as a scholar and have lived for many years as a resident of the modem identity of …

As consumers, we assume that the automobiles, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and other products we purchase are generally safe for their intended uses. We rely on manufacturers to design and produce safe products, and we assume that federal regulators are conscientious watchdogs of the marketplace. In most instances, our assumptions are valid and we safely go about our lives. But the regulatory system is now frayed to the point that dangerous products sometimes slip through the cracks. Vioxx, Firestone/ATX tires, and toxics-laden children’s toys have endangered and harmed millions. In these cases, society depends on the state courts as a venue …
How Globalization Affects Tax Design, James R. Hines Jr., Lawrence H. Summers
How Globalization Affects Tax Design, James R. Hines Jr., Lawrence H. Summers
Articles
The economic changes associated with globalization tighten financial pressures on governments of high-income countries by increasing the demand for government spending while making it more costly to raise tax revenue. Greater international mobility of economic activity, and associated responsiveness of the tax base to tax rates, increases the economic distortions created by taxation. Countries with small open economies have relatively mobile tax bases; as a result, they rely much less heavily on corporate and personal income taxes than do other countries. The evidence indicates that a ten percent smaller population in 1999 is associated with a one percent smaller ratio …

Objectives: Structured association tests ( SAT), like any statistical model, assumes that all variables are measured without error. Measurement error can bias parameter estimates and confound residual variance in linear models. It has been shown that admixture estimates can be contaminated with measurement error causing SAT models to suffer from the same afflictions. Multiple imputation (MI) is presented as a viable tool for correcting measurement error problems in SAT linear models with emphasis on correcting measurement error contaminated admixture estimates. Methods: Several MI methods are presented and compared, via simulation, in terms of controlling Type I error rates for both …

Obstacles In Investigating The Role Of Restructuring In Insightful Problem Solving, Ivan K. Ash, Patrick J. Cushen, Jennifer Wiley
Psychology Faculty Publications
In the present article, we articulate three assumptions underlying theories proposing that restructuring processes play a key role in insightful problem solving: representational difficulty, representational change, and discontinuity in solution processes. We argue that these assumptions need empirical validation to justify the proposition of restructuring mechanisms that are unique from those involved in classic information-processing theories of problem solving. To this end, we review some theoretical and methodological obstacles that are inherent in the investigation of the existence and nature of restructuring processes. We then offer some recommendations on how to overcome or avoid these obstacles in future studies. Finally, …
