The Relationship Between Teacher Efficacy And Multiple Learning Competencies With Arts And Non-Arts Educators, Lavinia Hallowell Draper Nov 2009

The Relationship Between Teacher Efficacy And Multiple Learning Competencies With Arts And Non-Arts Educators, Lavinia Hallowell Draper

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

The National Commission on Excellence in Education (1983) published A Nation at Risk to relay the academic performance level of American students. The results revealed that Americans students were performing considerably below other countries. Consequently, accountability through testing became the focus for policy makers to promote educational reform and educational equality (Linn, 2000). The focus on testing, however, has hindered student achievement and led to more (a) social promotion; (b) remedial courses; (c) retention rates; (d) teachers leaving the field; (e) dropout rates; and (f) invalid achievement results (Hoffinan, 2001).

As more schools have reassigned staff members to meet the …

The Prospects For Regime Change In Iran And The Controversy About U.S. Policy, Patrick Clawson Nov 2009

The Prospects For Regime Change In Iran And The Controversy About U.S. Policy, Patrick Clawson

The Islamic Republic of Iran: Multidisciplinary Analyses of its Theocracy, Nationalism, and Assertion of Power

The protest movement following the 12 June 2009 Iranian presidential election raised the question of what should be the European and American policy towards democratic forces in Iran. Another way of framing the issue is: should the West support "regime change" in Iran as an objective? Serious arguments can be made that the West should instead concentrate on resolving the nuclear standoff, even if Iran has an odious government. But there are two serious complications to any effort to reassure Tehran that the West is prepared to accept the regime so long as it agrees to a nuclear deal: Iranian …

Iranian Incitement To Genocide, Kenneth L. Marcus Nov 2009

Iranian Incitement To Genocide, Kenneth L. Marcus

The Islamic Republic of Iran: Multidisciplinary Analyses of its Theocracy, Nationalism, and Assertion of Power

Over the last several years, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was repeatedly proclaimed that Israel "should be wiped off the map." This has not been empty rhetoric, or political posturing, or a figure of speech. Rather, Ahmadinejad has directly and publicly urged the annihilation of the people of Israel. What gives weight and urgency to his words is the steady accumulation of nuclear capabilities in Iran. Ahmadinejad has proclaimed Iran to be a "nuclear state," announcing that it has attained the capacity to enrich uranium to weapons grade if it chooses to do so. This paper argues that Ahmadinejad's conduct, taken …

The University of New Mexico International Studies Institute has a relationship with the German government in which the Institute runs a summer program at a castle near Dusseldorf known as Schloss-Dyck. In summer 2010, I am going to have the privilege of teaching in the program with a Jason Wilby, a UNM visiting Professor of German. We put a joint proposal together. He will teach about the culture, political environment and constitutional framework right after the Weimar Republic was created as a result of WWI. I will teach about the Nuremberg trials, with a particular focus on the trial of …

Loving You Saved My Life, Laine Bowen Nov 2009

Loving You Saved My Life, Laine Bowen

Theses and Dissertations

When I create art it is as though I am building a metaphorical cathedral. Although there is serenity and faith within the process, there simultaneously exists an equal measure of frustration and mystery in the final outcome. At times I am like an ancient Chinese monk who, scrambling to please a merciless emperor, stumbles at last upon his pet cricket’s cage and using this accidental inspiration designs the perfect plan for the Forbidden City. My art then, at its best, possesses the rigidity of ritual, the flexibility of enlightenment and the joy of invention. I believe in the power of …

(R)Evolution In The Information Industry: What The Information Industry Can Learn From The Music Industry, Amy M. Elliott Nov 2009

(R)Evolution In The Information Industry: What The Information Industry Can Learn From The Music Industry, Amy M. Elliott

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

A failure to adapt to and adopt new and changing technology caused the music industry to crash, a fate that the information industry currently faces. This proposal is an overview of the music industry's crash, as a result of changing technology, and the lessons that the information industry can learn from the music industry's mistakes in order to avoid its own crash now that technology allows for quicker, easier, and cheaper publication. In the 80s & 90s record companies refused to effectively adapt to and adopt the new technologies of CDs, MP3s, and digital recording. This resulted in a slow …

Facing Faces, John Luck Nov 2009

Facing Faces, John Luck

Theses and Dissertations

I am a surrealist at heart. I enjoy the creative process of making a visual story that uses unusual imagery. Every work is a reflection of some part of my aesthetic belief: an outgrowth of my individuality. The art I produce is a direct reflection of my personality, beliefs, values, and experiences. I wear my emotions on my sleeve and I have a strong sense of identity. My work exhibits intense colors and strong contrasts. Each has its own underlying subtleties that express the inner depth of the concept. A little attention-deficient and a little bipolar, I am an erratic …

Global Warming, Convective Threshold And False Thermostats, Ian N. Williams, Raymond T. Pierrehumbert, Matthew Huber Nov 2009

Global Warming, Convective Threshold And False Thermostats, Ian N. Williams, Raymond T. Pierrehumbert, Matthew Huber

Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences Faculty Publications

We demonstrate a theoretically expected behavior of the tropical sea surface temperature probability density function (PDF) in future and past (Eocene) greenhouse climate simulations. To first order this consists of a shift to warmer temperatures as climate warms, without change of shape of the PDF. The behavior is tied to a shift of the temperature for deep convection onset. Consequently, the threshold for appearance of high clouds and associated radiative forcing shifts along with temperature. An excess entropy coordinate provides a reference to which the onset of deep convection is invariant, and gives a compact description of SST changes and …
