In-Plane, All-Photonic Transduction Method For Silicon Photonic Microcantilever Array Sensors, Jong Wook Noh Nov 2009

In-Plane, All-Photonic Transduction Method For Silicon Photonic Microcantilever Array Sensors, Jong Wook Noh

Theses and Dissertations

We have invented an in-plane all-photonic transduction method for photonic microcantilever arrays that is scalable to large arrays for sensing applications in both bio- and nanotechnology. Our photonic transduction method utilizes a microcantilever forming a single mode rib waveguide and a differential splitter consisting of an asymmetric multimode waveguide and a Y-branch waveguide splitter. The differential splitter's outputs are used to form a differential signal that has a monotonic response to microcantilever deflection. A differential splitter using an amorphous silicon strip-loaded multimode rib waveguide is designed and fabricated to demonstrate the feasibility of the in-plane photonic transduction method. Our initial …

An Evaluation Of Quikscat Uhr Wind Product's Effectiveness In Determining Selected Tropical Cyclone Characteristics, Faozi Said Nov 2009

An Evaluation Of Quikscat Uhr Wind Product's Effectiveness In Determining Selected Tropical Cyclone Characteristics, Faozi Said

Theses and Dissertations

While the standard wind product (L2B) available operationally in near-real time from SeaWinds on QuikSCAT is only 25 km in resolution, QuikSCAT data can be enhanced to yield a 2.5 km ultra-high resolution (UHR) product. The latter can be used to help estimate Tropical Cyclone (TC) characteristics such as TC eye center and wind radii. Two studies are conducted in this thesis, in which QuikSCAT UHR wind product's effectiveness in estimating these TC characteristics is evaluated. First, a comparison is made between the analyst's choice of eye location based on UHR images and interpolated best-track position. In this analysis, the …

Ballistic-Ohmic Quantum Hall Plateau Transition In A Graphene P-N Junction, Tony Low Nov 2009

Ballistic-Ohmic Quantum Hall Plateau Transition In A Graphene P-N Junction, Tony Low

Birck and NCN Publications

Recent quantum Hall experiments conducted on disordered graphene p-n junction provide evidence that the junction resistance could be described by a simple Ohmic sum of the n and p mediums’ resistances. However in the ballistic limit, theory predicts the existence of chirality-dependent quantum Hall plateaus in a p-n junction. We show that two distinctively separate processes are required for this ballistic-Ohmic plateau transition, namely, (i) hole/electron Landau states mixing and (ii) valley isospin dilution of the incident Landau edge state. These conclusions are obtained by a simple scattering theory argument, and confirmed numerically by performing ensembles of quantum magnetotransport calculations …

Dihomotopic Reduction Used In Deadlock Detection, David A. Cape, Bruce M. Mcmillin Nov 2009

Dihomotopic Reduction Used In Deadlock Detection, David A. Cape, Bruce M. Mcmillin

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Deadlock detection for concurrent programs has traditionally been accomplished by symbolic methods or by search of a state transition system. We examine an approach that uses geometric semantics involving the topological notion of dihomotopy to partition the state-space into components, after which the reduced state-space is exhaustively searched. Prior work partitioned the state-space inductively, but in this paper, we show that a recursive technique provides greater reduction of the size of the state transition system. as a result, we expect to see more efficient deadlock detection and eventually more efficient verification of some temporal properties for large problems if the …

The Role Of Cannabinoids And Cannabinoid Receptors In Enteric Neuronal Survival, Yan Li Nov 2009

The Role Of Cannabinoids And Cannabinoid Receptors In Enteric Neuronal Survival, Yan Li

Theses and Dissertations

The Endocannabinoid system has been found in the gastrointestinal tract, where it plays an important role in gut under both physiological and pathological conditions. Although the major effects of cannabinoids in the gut are mediated through effects on enteric neurons, the role of cannabinoids in the enteric nervous system is poorly understood. In the present study, we have used the primary cultures of myenteric ganglia and a newly developed fetal enteric neuronal cell line to identify whether the endocannabinoid, anandamide, affects ganglionic and neuronal survival and the pathways involved. Anandamide had a biphasic effect on ganglionic survival, increasing survival at …

Preparation And Characterization Of Stable Macroporous Titania Nano-Wells, Hema Santhi Aluri Nov 2009

Preparation And Characterization Of Stable Macroporous Titania Nano-Wells, Hema Santhi Aluri

Theses and Dissertations

Silica based sol-gel thin films have been extensively studied because of their advantages that include optical transparency, high biodegradability and low intrinsic fluorescence. However, one concern with silica based sol-gel derived materials is their long term stability in aqueous solutions. Another concern is their limited porosity. These two concerns limit the application of these materials in catalysis and separations. The main objective of this study is to prepare porous, thin films using titanium alkoxides as precursors and evaluate their long term stability in aqueous solutions. Colloidal crystal templating will be used to introduce macrosized pores into the titania network. The …

Neural Network Control Of Quadrotor Uav Formations, Travis Dierks, Sarangapani Jagannathan Nov 2009

Neural Network Control Of Quadrotor Uav Formations, Travis Dierks, Sarangapani Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, a novel framework for leader-follower formation control is developed for the control of multiple quadrotors unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) based on spherical coordinates. the control objective for the follower UAV is to track its leader at a desired- separation, angle of incidence, and a bearing by using an auxiliary velocity control. Then, a novel neural network (NN) control law for the dynamical system is introduced to learn the complete dynamics of the UAV including unmodeled dynamics like aerodynamic friction. Additionally, the interconnection dynamic errors between the leader and its followers are explicitly considered, and the stability of …

Development Of A Novel Biofedelic Skull-Neck-Thorax Model Capable Of Quantifying Motions Of Aged Cervical Spine, Naseem Neon Beauchman Nov 2009

Development Of A Novel Biofedelic Skull-Neck-Thorax Model Capable Of Quantifying Motions Of Aged Cervical Spine, Naseem Neon Beauchman

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

ABSTRACT Study Design. An in vitro biomechanical study. Objectives. The objectives were to: develop a new biofidelic skull-neck-thorax model capable of quantifying motion patterns of the cervical spine in the presence of a halo-vest, investigate the effects of vest loosening, superstructure loosening, and removal of the posterior uprights, and evaluate the ability of the halo-vest to stabilize the neck within physiological motion limits. Summary of Background Data. Previous clinical and biomechanical studies have investigated neck motion with the halo-vest only in the sagittal plane or only at the injured spinal level. No previous studies have quantified three-dimensional intervertebral motion patterns …

User Survey Regarding The Needs Of Network Researchers In Trace-Anonymization Tools, Jihwang Yeo, Keren Tan, David Kotz

Computer Science Technical Reports

To understand the needs of network researchers in an anonymization tool, we conducted a survey on the network researchers. We invited network researchers world-wide to the survey by sending invitation emails to well-known mailing lists whose subscribers may be interested in network research with collecting, sharing and sanitizing network traces.
