Concerto For Violoncello And Orchestra, Op. 27 By Paul Wranitzky: A Critical Edition, Sharon Meilstrup
Concerto For Violoncello And Orchestra, Op. 27 By Paul Wranitzky: A Critical Edition, Sharon Meilstrup
Theses and Dissertations
The Czech composer Paul Wranitzky (1756–1808) worked primarily in Vienna during the height of musical Classicism. He was well-respected among the higher artistic circles during his day as a composer, violinist, and conductor. His excellence in conducting was recognized by Haydn and Beethoven. His compositions were favored by Empress Marie Therese. Despite his contemporary fame and esteem, his works are relatively unknown today. His works are being revived today, bringing these once popular compositions back to the public. This thesis presents a critical edition of Wranitzky's cello concerto in C Major, appearing for the first time in a scholarly edition. …

Immigrant Granite Installer Killed After Falling With Homemade Construction Box, Kentucky Injury Prevention And Research Center
Fatality Case Reports--Falls
On a summer day in 2009, a 50-year-old granite installer and his two sons were working alone at a construction site when the granite installer fell out of a second story window and was killed. The three granite installers worked for a subcontractor hired to install granite vanity tops and sinks in a newly constructed hotel. Work had commenced at 7:00 AM that morning. They were installing the second set of ten vanities for the day. All ten vanities, with back and side splash pieces, had been loaded onto a homemade three-sided construction box and lifted via a forklift to …

Optical Transparency Of Graphene As Determined By The Fine-Structure Constant, Daniel E. Sheehy, Jörg Schmalian
Optical Transparency Of Graphene As Determined By The Fine-Structure Constant, Daniel E. Sheehy, Jörg Schmalian
Faculty Publications
The observed 97.7% optical transparency of graphene has been linked to the value 1/137 of the fine structure constant, by using results for noninteracting Dirac fermions. The agreement in three significant figures requires an explanation for the apparent unimportance of the Coulomb interaction. Using arguments based on Ward identities, the leading corrections to the optical conductivity due to the Coulomb interactions are correctly computed (resolving a theoretical dispute) and shown to amount to only 1%-2%, corresponding to 0.03%-0.04% in the transparency. © 2009 The American Physical Society.
Beauty, Ugliness, And Meaning: A Study Of Difficult Beauty, Christine Anne Palmer
Beauty, Ugliness, And Meaning: A Study Of Difficult Beauty, Christine Anne Palmer
Theses and Dissertations
The emergence of modern art, and subsequently contemporary art, has brought with it a deep-rooted deliberation of the definition of beauty and its role in the realm of art. Unlike many representational artworks, contemporary art less often contains a beauty that is readily available on the surface of an artwork- an easy beauty. Instead, it often possesses a beauty that requires substantial reasoning and understanding- a difficult beauty. Just as the definition of beauty has and will continue to be culturally and historically changing, so must our methodological and pedagogical practices in regards to beauty and Aesthetics. As Art Educators, …
Picking A Present Value Estimate Of Future Earnings: The Role Of Simulation, Scott Gilbert
Picking A Present Value Estimate Of Future Earnings: The Role Of Simulation, Scott Gilbert
Economics Discussion Papers
In a classic paper, Dulaney (1987) proposes a historical simulation- based method for evaluating measures of the present value of future earnings. This method compares a given ex ante estimate of present value with an ex post simulated value, in each time period. A key issue is the interpretation of what it means to have a good fit, when matching historical simulated present values. With best fit defined in standard statistical terms, I find that the total offset approach - whereby projected growth in wages is assumed equal to the projected interest rate - works best in the examples considered …

Ceramide Kinase Regulates Phospholipase C And Phosphatidylinositol 4, 5, Bisphosphate In Phototransduction, Ujjaini Dasgupta, Takeshi Bamba, Salvatore Chiantia, Pusha Karim, Ahmad N. Abou Tayoun
Dartmouth Scholarship
Phosphoinositide-specific phospholipase C (PLC) is a central effector for many biological responses regulated by G-protein-coupled receptors including Drosophila phototransduction where light sensitive channels are activated downstream of NORPA, a PLCbeta homolog. Here we show that the sphingolipid biosynthetic enzyme, ceramide kinase, is a novel regulator of PLC signaling and photoreceptor homeostasis. A mutation in ceramide kinase specifically leads to proteolysis of NORPA, consequent loss of PLC activity, and failure in light signal transduction. The mutant photoreceptors also undergo activity-dependent degeneration. Furthermore, we show that a significant increase in ceramide, resulting from lack of ceramide kinase, perturbs the membrane microenvironment of …

Titania-Based Coating For Capillary Microextraction, Abdul Malik, Tae-Young Kim
Titania-Based Coating For Capillary Microextraction, Abdul Malik, Tae-Young Kim
USF Patents
A method is presented describing in situ preparation of the titania-based sol-gel PDMS coating and its immobilization on the inner surface of a fused silica microextraction capillary. Sol-gel titania-poly (dimethylsiloxane) (TiO2-PDMS) coating was developed for capillary microextraction (CME) to perform on-line preconcentration and HPLC analysis of trace impurities in aqueous samples. The sol-gel titania-based coatings demonstrated strong pH stability and enhanced extraction capability over other commercially availble GC coatings. Extraction characteristics of a sol-gel titania-PDMS capillary remained practically unchanged after continuous rinsing with a 0.1 M NaOH solution (pH=13) for 12 hours.

Micro-Patterned Sio2/Tio2 Films Through Photo And Chemical Reactions, Xiaoling Ding, David P. Fries
Micro-Patterned Sio2/Tio2 Films Through Photo And Chemical Reactions, Xiaoling Ding, David P. Fries
USF Patents
A method for making a patterned SiO2 films over TiO2 (Si02/Ti02) under ambient atmospheric conditions, including room temperature, through photo and chemical reactions. The method is simple, convenient and can be performed in a short period of time, typically less than two hours. The patterned TiO2 film is fabricated through photo-irradiation of a photosensitive organic-titanium film using a mask. Silica particles are generated from silicate solution by adjusting pH values to 10 to 8 with hydrochloric acid. The pre-deposited TiO2 film has a strong attraction for the SiO2 particles, leading to the instant formation of SiO2 film over the TiO2 …

Multi-Transducer/Antenna Surface Acoustic Wave Device Sensor And Tag (Cip Of 11/203,260), Donald Malocha
UCF Patents
A surface acoustic wave sensor or tag having multiple transducer/antenna pairs each having a different center frequency. The bandwidth of each transducer/antenna pair is inversely proportional to the number of transducer/antenna used and the bandwidth is the sum of the bandwidth transducer/antenna pairs. Implementing a SAW sensor or tag with multiple transducer/antenna pairs significantly reduces devices losses and improves the performance of the device since the individual transducer/antenna pair's fractional bandwidth is reduced by the ratio of the system bandwidth to the number of transducer/antenna pairs used in the sensor.

Tiling is a crucial loop transformation for generating high performance code on modern architectures. Efficient generation of multilevel tiled code is essential for maximizing data reuse in systems with deep memory hierarchies. Tiled loops with parametric tile sizes (not compile-time constants) facilitate runtime feedback and dynamic optimizations used in iterative compilation and automatic tuning. Previous parametric multi-level tiling approaches have been restricted to perfectly nested loops, where all assignment statements are contained inside the innermost loop of a loop nest. Previous solutions to tiling for imperfect loop nests have only handled fixed tile sizes. In this paper, we present an …
