Bringing Librarianship Back Home: Information Literacy As A Return To Method, Kimberly A. Jones Nov 2009

Bringing Librarianship Back Home: Information Literacy As A Return To Method, Kimberly A. Jones

Communications in Information Literacy

Information literacy (IL) has arisen as a response to the reification of information. As information has been commodified, it has lost its fluidity as a term and an idea. Librarianship, as a result, has lost its footing, its philosophy. IL seeks to restore method to librarianship and, as a result, return subjectivity to information.

Surveying Libraries To Identify Best Practices For A Menu Approach For Library Instruction Requests, Candice Benjes-Small, Jennifer L. Dorner, Robert Schroeder

Communications in Information Literacy

A challenging situation has developed in regards to library instruction. With increases in both the quantity of information and the variety of information technologies being made available to researchers, the information literacy landscape is getting more complex. Simultaneously, the time allotted for library instruction is remaining essentially the same. In order to market the breadth of content available for library instruction sessions and to promote collaboration between librarians and teaching faculty in order to create optimal instruction sessions an 'a la carte menu' approach to library instruction requests was adopted by Radford University in 2004. Since the late 1990s a …

Exploring Wikis In A Library Credit Course, Vivien Elizabeth Zazzau Nov 2009

Exploring Wikis In A Library Credit Course, Vivien Elizabeth Zazzau

Communications in Information Literacy

Wiki is a type of software (also known as social software) that enables its users to create a website with only a minor knowledge of html. Many universities, schools, businesses, and libraries are currently using wiki software to great effect. Even so, there is very little literature addressing the use of wiki software in the university library instruction classroom. This report will focus on the use of wiki software in a university library instruction classroom and consider its feasibility as a tool for teaching critical thinking through team-based learning.

Addressing The Problem Of Land Motion At Tide Gauges, Kara J. Doran Nov 2009

Addressing The Problem Of Land Motion At Tide Gauges, Kara J. Doran

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Estimation of global mean sea level change has become an area of interest for scientists in recent decades because of its importance as an indicator of climate change. Climate models predict varying degrees of change in global temperature and global sea level over the next 100 years. One way to check the validity of the models is to estimate sea level change over the last century and constrain the models to match these estimates. Traditionally, sea level change estimates have been calculated using long time series from tide gauges. There are some disadvantages to this approach however, since tide gauges …

Ricci V. Destefano: End Of The Line Or Just Another Turn On The Disparate Impact Road?, Charles A. Sullivan Nov 2009

Ricci V. Destefano: End Of The Line Or Just Another Turn On The Disparate Impact Road?, Charles A. Sullivan

NULR Online

Reports of the death of Title VII’s disparate impact theory of discrimination in the wake of Ricci v. DeStefano may be exaggerated. Widely praised and widely criticized in the newspapers and the blogosphere, Ricci is the latest, but not the last, chapter in a long-running feud between Congress and the Supreme Court regarding disparate impact.

As the Supreme Court summarized the theory in International Brotherhood of Teamsters v. United States, disparate impact discrimination is the use of “employment practices that are facially neutral in their treatment of different groups but that in fact fall more harshly on one group than …

The Efficacy Of Dynamic Written Corrective Feedback On Intermediate-High Esl Learners' Writing Accuracy, Soon Yeun Lee Nov 2009

The Efficacy Of Dynamic Written Corrective Feedback On Intermediate-High Esl Learners' Writing Accuracy, Soon Yeun Lee

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the efficacy of dynamic written corrective feedback (DWCF) on intermediate-high students' writing accuracy when compared to a traditional grammar instruction approach. DWCF is an innovative written corrective feedback method that requires a multifaceted process and interaction between the teacher and the students in order to help the students improve their writing accuracy. The central principle of DWCF is that feedback should be manageable, meaningful, timely, and constant. The research question was raised based on the positive effects of DWCF found in advanced-low and advanced-mid proficiency level students (Evans et al., in press; Evans, Hartshorn, & Strong-Krause, 2009; …

Indirect Electrosynthesis Of Double Aldehyde Starch Using Pb-(Bro3-/Br-) As Electro-Catalytic Mediator, Ni-Na Chen, Ri-Yao Chen, Xi Zheng, Xiao Chen, Zhen Chen

Journal of Electrochemistry

In this paper,Nafion membrane was used as the separator in the electrolysis cell to indirectly electro-generating the double aldehyde starch(DAS) with BrO3-/Br-as a redox mediator and Pb as an anode.Effects of temperature, concentration of sulfuric acid and starch on the electro-oxidation of DAS were discussed. The steady state polarization curves were obtained. The experiment results showed that the current efficiency was over 50% when the electrolysis current density was 15mA/ cm2.

Preparation Of Polyaniline/Polyester Conductive Fabric Via In-Situ Polymerization, Fang Na, Wei Wang

Journal of Electrochemistry

The formation of PANI coating on the surface of PET fiber and fabric was obtained by in-situ polymerization method. The coating′s thickness was about 1~2 μm.Orthogonal test methodology was used to analyze the main factors of preparation of PANI / PET conductive fabric. The effects of the aniline monomer concentration, oxidant: aniline molar ratio, doping acid concentration and types, reaction time on the conductivities of the fabric were studied. The structure of the polymer were characterized by SEM,FTIR and XRD.The results indicated that there was uniform and continuous polyaniline film on the surface of polyester fabric. The contents of oxidation and reduction of polyaniline molecular chain structure …

Intersection Numbers, Embedded Spheres And Geosphere Laminations For Free Groups., Suhas Pandit Dr. Nov 2009

Intersection Numbers, Embedded Spheres And Geosphere Laminations For Free Groups., Suhas Pandit Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Topological and geometric methods have played a major role in the study of infinite groups since the time of Poincar´e and Klein, with the work of Nielsen, Dehn, Stallings and Gromov showing particularly deep connections with the topology of surfaces and three-manifolds. This is in part because a surface or a 3-manifold is essentially determined by its fundamental group, and has a geometric structure due to the Poincar´e-K¨obe-Klein uniformisation theorem for surfaces and Thurston’s geometrisation conjecture, which is now a theorem of Perelman, for 3-manifolds.A particularly fruitful instance of such an interplay is the relation between intersection numbers of simple …
