"The Life And Miracles Of Fisher Alumna Katie Kreutter, 2009", Katie Kreutter

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"I still find it difficult to believe that I am writing this submission for Verbum as a Fisher alumnus, and that soon a full semester will have passed since I was enrolled as a full-time student. Looking back on my time at Fisher, I fondly recall courses and professors that positively impacted the quality of my educational experience, as well as clubs and students that similarly supported my social experience. While I do not consider myself to have any sage advice to offer current students, I will say that …

The Parent Child Connection, Aisha Arshad Dec 2009

The Parent Child Connection, Aisha Arshad

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"The parent and child relationship is a very unique and interesting one. It is also a topic that has been highly researched and written on. It is one that has puzzled many since such a relationship was first established and it has been exemplified time and time again in various religious texts. Why is this relationship so unique and different than others? Why is it one that demands so much attention? Why is it important enough to have religious significance in the Bible, the Quran, the Torah and many …

Scattering Flowers, Eileen Admo James Cotter Dec 2009

Scattering Flowers, Eileen Admo James Cotter

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"One of the most important missions we have as parents is to instill in our children those values that we view as critical to living a successful life. Although the early parent-child years are filled with countless, explicit small lessons and recommendations, it is our unspoken values that teach the most during that time. Children are very keen observers and can see through (and often make their best attempt to ignore) our verbal recommendations, especially if they do not align with our non-verbal actions. For example, teaching children to …

Developing One's Character: An Aristotelian Defense Of Sportsmanship, Tim Madigan Dec 2009

Developing One's Character: An Aristotelian Defense Of Sportsmanship, Tim Madigan

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"While he lived long ago, the ethical writings of the Ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle (384-322 B.C.) still have relevance to the present day, particularly when we try to understand the meaning of the term “sportsmanship.” For Aristotle, the purpose of ethical training was to help human beings achieve personal excellence, what he called “eudaimonia” or “self-fulfillment.” Since we are by nature social animals, such fulfillment can only occur within a communal setting. One judges an individual by the way in which that individual excels, and one judges a community …

"Clocking Koufax", Ron A. Ambrosetti Dec 2009

"Clocking Koufax", Ron A. Ambrosetti

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"Walking out of the tunnels of Baltimore’s Memorial Stadium, even after the roaring crowds had departed in compressed streams of red taillights, was the best part of the evening, John Angelina had decided early in the baseball season. Especially now that the Orioles were headed for a pennant and possibly the World Series, the line of groupies would wait for the pitchers. Not that the other players or positions were any less attractive, it was just something about the pitchers. Particularly that battery of pitchers that year that would …

Object Oriented Program Correctness With Oosiml, José M. Garrido Dec 2009

Object Oriented Program Correctness With Oosiml, José M. Garrido

Faculty Articles

Software reliability depends on program correctness and robustness and these are extremely important in developing high-quality software. Correctness is also essential when considering aspects of software security. However, experience applying these concepts, associated methods, and supporting software with Eiffel and Java have shown that students find some diffculty learning program correctness and in learning the software tools provided. We have developed an experimental language, OOSimL, that includes an assertion notation similar to that of Eiffel but which has much more flexibility, and that provides the same semantics as Java.

The first part of this paper provides an overview of concepts …

Audit Committee Material Weaknesses In Smaller Reporting Companies, Audrey A. Gramling, Dana R. Hermanson, Heather M. Hermanson Dec 2009

Audit Committee Material Weaknesses In Smaller Reporting Companies, Audrey A. Gramling, Dana R. Hermanson, Heather M. Hermanson

Faculty Articles

One of the critical elements of internal control over financial reporting is an effectively functioning audit committee. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX) defines an audit committee as " committee (or equivalent body) established by and amongst the board of directors of an issuer for the purpose of overseeing the accounting and financial reporting processes of the issuer and audits of the financial statements of the issuer." Recent SOX section 404 filings by smaller reporting companies ("nonaccelerated filers," or registrants with less than $75 million of public float), however, indicate that some small companies still are struggling to develop effective …

Meeting The Demand For Accountability: Case Study Of A Teacher Education Program In China, Tak Cheung Chan Dec 2009

Meeting The Demand For Accountability: Case Study Of A Teacher Education Program In China, Tak Cheung Chan

Faculty Articles

To meet the demand for accountability, a teacher education program in a university located in South China has established processes at the college, the program, and the faculty levels to assure its program quality. Highlights of the processes are: involvement of stakeholders and the examination of program effectiveness. Although much has been done to help program candidates succeed, more effort is needed in the areas of program assessment and continuous improvement to assure program quality. An accountability implementation plan, a beginning teacher mentoring program, and a comparative study of beginning teacher performance were recommended to further enforce its strategies toward …

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

River by nature is a unity, but there is a tendency to separate river management based on administrative areas. River is also related to the community living in its surrounding area. This paper discusses watershed issues related to the management and community condition, especially within the framework of interrelationship between upstream and downstream areas. Department of Public Works as the institution was responsible for the national water resource management has proposed the idea of "one river one plan one management." However, in reality this idea is not consistent with the regulations issued by the government, especially in the context of …

Realitas Dan Tatanan Urban Kota-Kota Di Jepang, Evawani Ellisa

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

Despite the highly praised for technology achievements and prosperities, the morphology and appearance of Cities in Japan are often criticized as dull, uninteresting, brutal, and chaos. The question is, how do cities in Japan gain stability while the reality of the urban condition is in a chaos? Is there something behind the chaos that makes urban dwellers of Japanese cities able to relatively live comfortably and safely? This paper analyses some aspects which shaped Japan urbanism, from disorderly addressing system to the speed of building transformations that considerably high. Climate Change Impacts On Water Resources Of The Upper Blue Nile River Basin, Ethiopia, U. Kim, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi, V. U. Smakhtin Dec 2009

Climate Change Impacts On Water Resources Of The Upper Blue Nile River Basin, Ethiopia, U. Kim, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi, V. U. Smakhtin

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Climate change affects water resources availability of international river basins that are vulnerable to runoff variability of upstream countries especially with increasing water demands. The upper Blue Nile River Basin is a good example because its downstream countries, Sudan and Egypt, depend solely on Nile waters for their economic development. In this study, the impacts of climate change on both hydrology and water resources operations were analyzed using the outcomes of six different general circulation models (GCMs) for the 2050s. The outcomes of these six GCMs were weighted to provide average future changes. Hydrologic sensitivity, flow statistics, a drought index, …

Human Rights & Human Welfare

We were warned to temper our high hopes for a bold new Obama era of human rights. After all, President Obama would have “a lot on his plate”: a serious economic crisis, high unemployment, over forty million people without health insurance, “two wars,” global volatility. But it’s very hard not to be dismayed by some of the continuities from the Bush to the Obama administration, as well as by some Janus-faced policy decisions with damning human rights implications. When it comes to US-Latin America relations, such decisions include: professing support for progressive immigration reform while expanding regressive anti-immigration measures; claiming …
