The projectile electron loss and capture are important ionization components collision channels in dressed ion-atom and ion-molecule collisions. They play important roles in several processes connected to the penetration of neutral and charged projectiles in gases, in radiation damage and upper atmospheric physics. in this work, cross sections for total single and multiple electron loss and capture of O-, Oo, O+, O2+ projectiles impinging on the methane molecule were measured in the 15 keV ≤ E ≤ 1000 keV energy range. in addition, an extended version of the free-collision model was employed for the calculation …

Photoassociation Spectroscopy Of Purely Long-Range Krypton Molecules, Z. Smith, J. Banister, R. Norman, K. Hoogeboom

Photoassociation spectra for purely long-range (PLR) krypton molecules are both computed and measured. The photoassociation laser is tuned just red of the 5s[3/2]2-5p[5/2]2 transition at 810.6 nm, over a frequency range in which fourteen different PLR potential wells support hundreds of vibrational bound states. In the experiment, laser light is directed into a cloud of magneto-optically trapped 84Kr atoms, and the emission of both ultraviolet photons and ions is monitored. Peaks in these signals are observed for laser frequencies within 200 MHz of the atomic resonance. Ongoing work is aimed at improving the experimental signal and understanding the degree of …

Ecology Of Urban Bees: A Review Of Current Knowledge And Directions For Future Study, J. L. Hernandez, G. W. Frankie, R. W. Thorp
Cities and the Environment (CATE)
Urban bee ecology is an emerging field that holds promise for advancing knowledge of bee community dynamics and promoting bee conservation. Published studies of bee communities in urban and suburban habitats are fewer than those documenting bees in agricultural and wildland settings. As land lost to urbanization is predicted to increase in coming years the necessity of studying urban bee populations is growing. We reviewed 59 publications on urban bee ecology with the following goals, to assess current knowledge, to highlight areas in need of further research, and to suggest applications of study findings to bee conservation. Identifying the mechanisms that regulate neural precursor cell (NPC) proliferation and differentiation is important for understanding CNS development among different vertebrates. My work has focused specifically on understanding how mitogenic factors, like basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF2), regulate the NPC cell cycle. Mitogenic factors and serum are thought to drive cell cycle and therefore proliferation mainly by activating G1-type cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs). The general hypothesis being addressed here is that FGF2 also promotes cell cycle progression of NPCs through the degradation of the cell cycle inhibitor p27Kip1. The recent implementation of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) in January 2005 created new financial risks for emitting firms. To deal with these risks, options are traded since October 2006. Because the EU ETS is a new market, the relevant underlying model for option pricing is still a controversial issue. This article improves our understanding of this issue by characterizing the conditional and unconditional distributions of the realized volatility for the 2008 futures contract in the European Climate Exchange (ECX), which is valid during Phase II (2008-2012) of the EU ETS. The Antimicrobial Triclocarban Stimulates Embryo Production In The Freshwater Mudsnail Potamopyrgus Antipodarum, Ben D. Giudice, Thomas M. Young

Recent research has indicated that the antimicrobial chemical triclocarban (TCC) represents a new type of endocrine disruptor, amplifying the transcriptional activity of steroid hormones and their receptors while itself exhibiting little affinity for these receptors. The effects of TCC were studied in the freshwater mudsnail Potamopyrgus antipodarum. Specimens were exposed to concentrations ranging from 0.05 to 10.5 mg/L dissolved TCC and were removed and dissected, and embryos contained within the brood pouch were counted and classified as shelled or unshelled after two and four weeks of exposure. After four weeks, environmentally relevant TCC concentrations of 1.6 to 10.5 mg/L resulted …

Sequential Sharing Rules For River Sharing Problems, Erik Ansink, Hans-Peter Weikard

We analyse the redistribution of a resource among agents who have claims to the resource and who are ordered linearly. A well known example of this particular situation is the river sharing problem. We exploit the linear order of agents to transform the river sharing problem to a sequence of two-agent river sharing problems. These reduced problems are mathematically equivalent to bankruptcy problems and can therefore be solved using any bankruptcy rule. Our proposed class of solutions, that we call sequential sharing rules, solves the river sharing problem. Our approach extends the bankruptcy literature to settings with a sequential structure …
