Deception Analysis In Interpersonal Communication, Loren E. Schwarzwalter Dec 2009

Deception Analysis In Interpersonal Communication, Loren E. Schwarzwalter

Theses and Dissertations

The art of magic reigns as the premiere form of entertainment made possible through the strategic means of deception. An untrained individual (civilian) who desires personal gain at the expense of others, however, may use the same strategic gimmicks and manipulations that magicians employ. This study considered the theatrical elements used by magicians during the performance of magic but in an interpersonal civilian context. In order to examine civilian use of the premeditated theatrical elements, and to determine their presence in deceptive interpersonal communication, this study examined low versus high self-monitors and male versus female genders.

An experiment was conducted …

Views Of Student Nurses On Caring And Technology In Nursing, Elizabeth Gail Brodell Dec 2009

Views Of Student Nurses On Caring And Technology In Nursing, Elizabeth Gail Brodell

Theses and Dissertations

Nurses entering the workforce are faced with many challenges, but today the multiple demands of patient care are complicated by a nurse's need to keep abreast of fast-changing technology. This research is universally relevant to nursing practice in educational settings and practice areas because nursing education needs to develop strategies to teach students the skills to manage technology, while keeping the elements of caring in learning and clinical practices.

This quantitative study examined the perceptions of nursing students on caring, technology as caring, the technological influences on caring practice, and their confidence level of PDA use. Participants were students accepted …

The Influence Of Spirituality Within Older Adults During Relocation In Long Term Care, Cheryl M. Lantz Dec 2009

The Influence Of Spirituality Within Older Adults During Relocation In Long Term Care, Cheryl M. Lantz

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative research study was to develop a model focused on spiritual influences within older adults undergoing relocation to long term care (LTC) facilities. Today, there are 1.5 million Americans aged 65 or older who experienced relocation and reside in LTC facilities. Nothing has been done to qualitatively study the spiritual aspects of this experience. While the profession of nursing has a diagnosis for Relocation Stress Syndrome, as found in the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA) reference, it does not incorporate the specific spiritual stressors older adults undergo during relocation; rather addressing only physiological and psychosocial …

Weight Loss Surgery Decision Process: A Grounded Theory Study, Martha Lystad Dec 2009

Weight Loss Surgery Decision Process: A Grounded Theory Study, Martha Lystad

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate the decision making process of morbidly or severely obese individuals who engage in weight loss surgery and the role of nurses in this process using a grounded theory research design. Morbid or severe obesity is a chronic illness that is increasing in prevalence throughout the United States. The Center for Disease Control (2007) reported the obesity population of adults doubled from 15.1% in 1976-80 to 30.9% in 1999-2000. The current most effective long-term treatment for morbid or severe obesity is weight loss surgery, most commonly gastric bypass or gastric banding. Furthermore, …

Der Weg Zur Erinnerungin W. G. Sebalds Austerlitz, Cristina Andronescu Dec 2009

Der Weg Zur Erinnerungin W. G. Sebalds Austerlitz, Cristina Andronescu

The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal

The following essay provides a look into the role of the unconscious in the protagonist’s process of remembering in W.G. Sebald’s novel, Austerlitz. It aims to show that objects and places can reveal more than the actual information to which they are a repository or the purpose they were designed to serve. Rather, they function as connectors to the hidden world of repressed experiences. Recurring with obstinacy in the protagonist’s path, such connectors both show the way and obscure the view toward that which makes the real end of the search, that which has been lost. Thus, they not only …

Die Entstehung Von Der Endstellung Des Finiten Verbs In Deutschen Nebensätzen, Freya Plower Dec 2009

Die Entstehung Von Der Endstellung Des Finiten Verbs In Deutschen Nebensätzen, Freya Plower

The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal

In this paper I try to explain why the verb comes at the end of German subordinate clauses. I aim to show that this word order did not come from Latin, as was formerly believed, but rather is a native element of German. As a means to this end, I trace morphological and syntactic developments within German, which show that it has gradually changed from a synthetic to a largely analytic language. In its earlier stages, German had a more flexible word order. This was made possible by inflectional endings, which indicate the syntactic relationships between words. Due to features …

L’Italia Degli Anni Sessanta E Settanta Attraverso Il Mio Fratello È Figlio Unico Di Danielle Luchetti, Jimmy Schiemann

The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal

For this project, I have chosen to study the 1970s and 80s through the movie "My Brother Is An Only Child by Danielle Luchetti." The movie covers twenty years of turbulent Italian history, focusing also on the human and emotional relationships between the two brothers. This movie acts as a “laboratory” to analyze the people’s behavior in a specific context of crisis and opposition.

Ddr Erziehung In Der Ansicht Von Christa Wolf In Der Geteilte Himmel, Timothy Walker Dec 2009

Ddr Erziehung In Der Ansicht Von Christa Wolf In Der Geteilte Himmel, Timothy Walker

The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal

In this paper I examined Christa Wolf’s portrayal of education in East Germany through a study of her book Der geteilte Himmel. The goal of education in the GDR was to create faithful socialist workers. Rita Seidel, the main character in Der geteilte Himmel, chose to study education in order to be with her boyfriend, Manfred, in the city. As she continued her socialist studies, her goal changed to forwarding socialism in the GDR. Additionally, through my research on education in the GDR, it becomes clear that teachers were valuable to the state; this is not portrayed in Wolf’s story. …

Le Parti Socialiste À Paris: La Victoire De Bertrand Delanoë En 2001 Et La Présence Du Parti Jusqu’À Aujourd’Hui, Raisa Simōes, Samantha Asbury, Cynthia Rojo

The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal

The following essay provides an in-depth analysis of the consecutive victories of the Socialist Party in Paris elections in 2001 and 2008. Socialist Bertrand Delanoë has served as mayor of Paris since 2001. This remarkable victory signaled a substantial change in the modern political history of Paris, for Delanoë took over the position after 24 years of domination by the political right. As the right became mired in allegations of corruption and in party divisions in 2001, Delanoë capitalized to push forth with a social and environmental platform characteristic of the left that proved to appeal to modern Parisian voters. …

Horacio Castellanos Moya: El Cinismo Salvadoreño, Matthew Squires Dec 2009

Horacio Castellanos Moya: El Cinismo Salvadoreño, Matthew Squires

The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal

This essay examines the theme of cynicism used by the Salvadoran author Horacio Castellanos Moya in El Asco,Insensatez y El Gran Masturbador. He uses this theme as a narrative strategy to reveal that nothing has changed politically or culturally in his country even after years of devastating civil war. Inside of this cynicism we can see two sub-themes, eroticism and violence, used as expressions of a political transition from civil war to the fractured post-civil war era in El Salvador. Castellanos Moya’s prose contains very few moments of optimism attempting to represent Central America in its raw form, focusing on …

A Case Study: Third Party Performance-Based Navigation Instrument Flight Procedure Design Regulations At The Federal Aviation Administration, The Civil Aviation Safety Authority Of Australia, And The Civil Aviation Authority Of New Zealand, Matthew Vacanti

Theses and Dissertations

The Instrument Flight Procedure (IFP) [A listing of all acronyms and definitions is provided in Appendix A] is an essential component to the aviation system. Every day and during every flight, thousands of aircraft around the world are flying instrument departure, arrival, or approach procedures (International Civil Aviation Organization, 2008). Historically, Civil Aviation Authorities (CAA) have relied on internal resources to produce and implement (develop, publish, flight inspect, perform quality assurance functions, and maintain) IFPs (Federal Aviation Administration, 2009). Today safety, access, environmental and capacity concerns have, in some cases, driven the demand for Performance-Based Navigation (PBN) IFPs beyond the …

Assessment Of Internationalised Domain Name Homograph Attack Mitigation, Peter Hannay, Christopher Bolan Dec 2009

Assessment Of Internationalised Domain Name Homograph Attack Mitigation, Peter Hannay, Christopher Bolan

Australian Information Security Management Conference

With the advent of internationalised domains the threat posed by non-english character sets has eventuated. Whilst this phenomenon remains well known in the development and internet industry the actual implementations of popular applications have been tested to determine their resilience to homograph based attack. The research found that most provided features that overcome such attacks, but there remain a few notable exceptions. Should an attacker take advantage of such oversights a victim would likely not be able to spot a fraudulent site or email and thus provide a perfect platform for subsequent attack.

The 2009 Personal Firewall Robustness Evaluation, Ken Pydayya, Peter Hannay, Patryk Szewczyk Dec 2009

The 2009 Personal Firewall Robustness Evaluation, Ken Pydayya, Peter Hannay, Patryk Szewczyk

Australian Information Security Management Conference

The evolution of the internet as a platform for commerce, banking, general information and personal communications has resulted in a situation where many individuals who may not have previously required internet access now require this connectivity as part of their everyday lives. In addition to this the widespread adoption of mobile broadband has lead to an increasing number of individuals having public facing IP addresses with no firewall appliances present. This situation has dramatically increased reliance on personal firewalls as the first and often last defence against intruders (human and malware alike). The evaluation performed demonstrates the capabilities of current …

Electronic-Supply Chain Information Security: A Framework For Information, Alizera Bolhari Dec 2009

Electronic-Supply Chain Information Security: A Framework For Information, Alizera Bolhari

Australian Information Security Management Conference

Over the last few years, the materials and distribution management has developed into a broader strategic approach known as electronic supply chain management by means of information technology. This paper attempts to visibly describe supply chain management information security concepts which are necessary for managers to know about. So, the depth of information presented in this paper is calibrated for managers, not technical security employees or agents. Global supply chains are exposed to diverse types of risks that rise along with increasing globalization. Electronic supply chains will be more vulnerable from information security (IS) aspect among other types of supply …

Exploring The Relationship Between Organizational Culture And Information Security Culture, Joo S. Lim, Shanton Chang, Sean Maynard, Atif Ahmad Dec 2009

Exploring The Relationship Between Organizational Culture And Information Security Culture, Joo S. Lim, Shanton Chang, Sean Maynard, Atif Ahmad

Australian Information Security Management Conference

Managing Information Security is becoming more challenging in today’s business because people are both a cause of information security incidents as well as a key part of the protection from them. As the impact of organizational culture (OC) on employees is significant, many researchers have called for the creation of information security culture (ISC) in organizations to influence the actions and behaviour of employees towards better organizational information security. Although researchers have called for the creation of ISC to be embedded in organizations, nonetheless, literature suggests that little past research examining the relationship between the nature of OC and ISC. …
