The Amino Terminus Of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Glycoprotein K (Gk) Modulates Gb-Mediated Virus-Induced Cell Fusion And Virion Egress, Vladimir N. Chouljenko, Arun V. Iyer, Sona Chowdhury, Dmitry V. Chouljenko, Konstantin G. Kousoulas Dec 2009

The Amino Terminus Of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Glycoprotein K (Gk) Modulates Gb-Mediated Virus-Induced Cell Fusion And Virion Egress, Vladimir N. Chouljenko, Arun V. Iyer, Sona Chowdhury, Dmitry V. Chouljenko, Konstantin G. Kousoulas

Faculty Publications

Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1)-induced cell fusion is mediated by viral glycoproteins and other membrane proteins expressed on infected cell surfaces. Certain mutations in the carboxyl terminus of HSV-1 glycoprotein B (gB) and in the amino terminus of gK cause extensive virus-induced cell fusion. Although gB is known to be a fusogenic glycoprotein, the mechanism by which gK is involved in virus-induced cell fusion remains elusive. To delineate the amino-terminal domains of gK involved in virus-induced cell fusion, the recombinant viruses gKΔ31-47, gKΔ31-68, and gKΔ31-117, expressing gK carrying in-frame deletions spanning the amino terminus of gK immediately after the …

The Glycine Plus Serine Requirement Of Broiler Chicks Fed Low-Crude Protein, Corn-Soybean Meal Diets, A. M. Waguespack, S. Powell, T. D. Bidner, L. L. Southern

Faculty Publications

Low-protein, amino acid-supplemented, all-vegetable diets for broilers may not result in optimal FCR unless they are supplemented with Gly. Three experiments were conducted to determine the Gly + Ser requirement in a low-CP, corn- and soybean meal-based diet with 0.25% l-Lys·HCl, a level which previously had been shown to result in optimal growth performance of broilers as long as it is supplemented with Gly to maintain a minimum of 2.32% total Gly + Ser. Glycine addition to the diet did not affect ADG or ADFI but decreased FCR. When the FCR data from all 3 experiments were combined, the total …

High Frequency Of The D Allele Of The Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Gene In Arabic Populations, Abdel Halim Salem, Mark A. Batzer

Faculty Publications

Background. The angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) gene in humans has an insertion-deletion (I/D) polymorphic state in intron 16 on chromosome 17q23. This polymorphism has been widely investigated in different populations due to its association with the renin-angiotensin system. However, similar studies for Arab populations are limited. This study addresses the distribution of the ACE gene polymorphism in three Arab populations (Egyptians, Jordanians and Syrians). Findings. The polymorphisms of ACE gene were investigated using polymerase chain reaction for detection of an I/D mutation. The results showed a high frequency of the ACE D allele among the three Arab populations, Egyptians (0.67), Jordanians …

The Effect Of Plant Source Location On Restoration Success: A Reciprocal Transplant Experiment With Winterfat (Krascheninnikovia Lanata), Melanie G. Barnes Dec 2009

The Effect Of Plant Source Location On Restoration Success: A Reciprocal Transplant Experiment With Winterfat (Krascheninnikovia Lanata), Melanie G. Barnes

Biology ETDs

It is increasingly important that plant propagules used in revegetation projects are from a location that is geographically or ecologically similar to the planting site. To better understand the consequences of using non-local plant materials, I chose to study the population biology of the widespread shrub winterfat (Krascheninnikovia lanata, Chenopodiaceae) among five populations in New Mexico, USA. Winterfat plant morphology among the five populations was compared, and the rate of emergence and floral onset was measured in a greenhouse common garden. A reciprocal transplant experiment was planted in which individuals from different locations were planted in replicate common gardens. Transplant …

The Role Of Spatial And Genetic Modeling To Biogeography, Dolly Lyne Crawford Dec 2009

The Role Of Spatial And Genetic Modeling To Biogeography, Dolly Lyne Crawford

Biology ETDs

One of the most persistent challenges in biology is explaining the distribution of animal taxa. Quantitative explanations for the distribution of organisms are challenged by the complexity of factors that potentially limit a species range, including topography, ecology, climate and biology. Because of limits on data and approaches, early biogeographers were hampered in their ability to explain patterns. Here, I benefit from two primary developments in biogeography. My research draws from the accumulation of data across several scientific disciplines and advances in spatial and statistical approaches to examine the distribution of animal taxa within an integrative biogeography framework. I combine …

Statistical Tools For Linking Engine-Generated Malware To Its Engine, Edna Chelangat Milgo Dec 2009

Statistical Tools For Linking Engine-Generated Malware To Its Engine, Edna Chelangat Milgo

Theses and Dissertations

Malware-generating engines challenge typical malware analysts by requiring them to quickly extract and upload to their customers' machines, a signature for each of a possibly vast number of never-before-seen malware instances that an engine can generate in a short amount of time In this thesis we propose and evaluate two methods for linking variants of engine-generated malware to its engine. The proposed methods use the w-gram frequency vector (NFV) of the opcode mnemonics of an engine-generated malware in- stance as a feature vector for the instance. An NFV is a tuple that maps «-grams with their frequencies. The in-formation contained …

The Physiological Ecology And Evolution Of Freezing Tolerance In Diploid Larrea Sp., Juliana Sibylla Medeiros Dec 2009

The Physiological Ecology And Evolution Of Freezing Tolerance In Diploid Larrea Sp., Juliana Sibylla Medeiros

Biology ETDs

A basic understanding of vegetation responses to temperature and precipitation variability is paramount to the understanding of ecological adaptation, and comparisons across warm deserts are needed to increase our understanding of the controls on establishment in warm desert ecosystems. At the high latitude edges of warm deserts drought and freezing lower plant performance due to xylem dysfunction, as freeze-thaw embolism reduces stomatal conductance, or damage to leaf photosynthetic apparatus, as tissue desiccation reduces photosynthetic efficiency. Variation in these physiological responses can be observed across life-history stages, genetic background, climate gradients, and species, and this variation may be acted on by …

Statistical Methods In Microarrays And High-Throughput Flow Cytometry, Osorio Meirelles Dec 2009

Statistical Methods In Microarrays And High-Throughput Flow Cytometry, Osorio Meirelles

Biology ETDs

Abstract-I

Background: Heterogeneous cell populations have previously been described as noisy. However, recent studies have demonstrated that heterogeneity can be biologically significant. We present here an approach for rapid and complete identification of heterogeneous cell populations from high-throughput flow cytometry data. We have developed a novel measure Slope Differentiation Identification (SDI) using flow cytometry-based protein expression, quantifying the rate of change in protein expression between two conditions (exponential and stationary phase) of yeast cells, as a function of cell size or cell granularity.

Results: SDI had superior Gene Ontology enrichment when compared with other approaches such as k-means clustering and …

Nutrient Cycles And Marine Microbes In A Co2-Enriched Ocean, David A. Hutchins, Margaret R. Mulholland, Feixue Fu Dec 2009

Nutrient Cycles And Marine Microbes In A Co2-Enriched Ocean, David A. Hutchins, Margaret R. Mulholland, Feixue Fu

OES Faculty Publications

The ocean carbon cycle is tightly linked with the cycles of the major nutrient elements nitrogen, phosphorus, and silicon. It is therefore likely that enrichment of the ocean with anthropogenic CO2 and attendant acidification will have large consequences for marine nutrient biogeochemistry, and for the microbes that mediate many key nutrient transformations. The best available evidence suggests that the nitrogen cycle may respond strongly to higher CO2 through increases in global N2 fixation and possibly denitrification, as well as potential decreases in nitrification. These trends could cause nitrification to become a nitrogen cycle "bottleneck," by increasing the flux of N2 …

Recursive Methods In Discounted Stochastic Games: An Algorithm For Delta Approaching 1 And A Folk Theorem, Johannes Hörner, Takuo Sugaya, Satoru Takahashi, Nicolas Vieille Dec 2009

Recursive Methods In Discounted Stochastic Games: An Algorithm For Delta Approaching 1 And A Folk Theorem, Johannes Hörner, Takuo Sugaya, Satoru Takahashi, Nicolas Vieille

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We present an algorithm to compute the set of perfect public equilibrium payoffs as the discount factor tends to one for stochastic games with observable states and public (but not necessarily perfect) monitoring when the limiting set of (long-run players’) equilibrium payoffs is independent of the state. This is the case, for instance, if the Markov chain induced by any Markov strategy profile is irreducible. We then provide conditions under which a folk theorem obtains: if in each state the joint distribution over the public signal and next period’s state satisfies some rank condition, every feasible payoff vector above the …

A Specification Test For Instrumental Variables Regression With Many Instruments, Yoonseok Lee, Ryo Okui Dec 2009

A Specification Test For Instrumental Variables Regression With Many Instruments, Yoonseok Lee, Ryo Okui

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper considers specification testing for instrumental variables estimation in the presence of many instruments. The test proposed is a modified version of the Sargan (1958, Econometrica 26(3): 393-415) test of overidentifying restrictions. The test statistic asymptotically follows the standard normal distribution under the null hypothesis of correct specification when the number of instruments increases with the sample size. We find that the new test statistic is numerically equivalent up to a sign to the test statistic proposed by Hahn and Hausman (2002, Econometrica 70(1): 163-189). We also assess the size and power properties of the test.

Exploring Formation And Distribution Of Halonitromethanes In Drinking Waters, Jia Hu Dec 2009

Exploring Formation And Distribution Of Halonitromethanes In Drinking Waters, Jia Hu

All Dissertations

ABSTRACT
Nine halonitromethanes (HNMs) were among the more than fifty unregulated high-priority disinfection by-products (DBPs) that were monitored for and detected in drinking waters in a 2000-2002 nationwide occurrence study funded by the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). The toxicology studies conducted in recent years have shown that HNMs are one of the most cytotoxic and genotoxic classes among the emerging DBPs, with orders of magnitude higher cytotoxicity and genotoxicity than any of the regulated organic DBPs. Furthermore, brominated HNMs were found to be more toxic than their chlorinated analogs, with dibromonitromethane being the most cyto- and genotoxic. Today, our …
