Working Report #7: Helping Relationships In Child Welfare (Parent Perspectives), Lirondel Hazineh, Gary Cameron, Karen Frensch Dec 2009

Working Report #7: Helping Relationships In Child Welfare (Parent Perspectives), Lirondel Hazineh, Gary Cameron, Karen Frensch

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

This report examines the nature of first contacts in child welfare, the level of contact between families and service providers, and the quality of relationships over time across central, integrated, and accessible service delivery models.

I. First Contacts Clarity, consultation, use of power, and positive shifts in perception were central issues identified by parents when discussing their experiences of first contacts with child welfare. More parents in accessible sites had experiences with workers who were clear and provided a sense that they would be supported. Within the accessible sites a strong philosophy of collaboration emerged between worker and participant. Participants …

Life Domain Research Report Series: Family (2010 Update), Gary Cameron, Lirondel Hazineh, Karen Frensch, Michele Preyde

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

A key consideration in understanding the long term community adaptation of children and youth involved with residential treatment or intensive family services is the role that family plays in sustaining or eroding gains made by children and youth in treatment (Frensch & Cameron, 2002). This report includes a summary of family descriptive information, the nature of family relationships, and indicators of family functioning for children and youth who have participated in children’s mental health services.

Data were collected about youth who had been involved with children’s mental health residential treatment (RT) or intensive family service programs (IFS), designed as an …

Working Report #2: Client And Community Relations (Service Provider Perspectives), Lirondel Hazineh, Gary Cameron Dec 2009

Working Report #2: Client And Community Relations (Service Provider Perspectives), Lirondel Hazineh, Gary Cameron

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

This report addresses two important questions: how much emphasis is placed on building positive relationships with families and communities across agency based, integrated service, and community and school based models of service delivery? And, how successful is each model at building relationships, minimizing stigma for families, and improving the image of child welfare in the community?

Educating clients and the community about child welfare services was identified as an important role for workers in some sites and not in others. While families’ fears of child protection services were a concern, some workers also expressed a fear of their clients and …

Working Report #1: Service Model Accessibility (Service Provider Perspectives), Lirondel Hazineh, Gary Cameron Dec 2009

Working Report #1: Service Model Accessibility (Service Provider Perspectives), Lirondel Hazineh, Gary Cameron

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

This report examines the differences in service accessibility across central, integrated, and school/community based child welfare service delivery models including geographic proximity to families, acceptability of the setting to families, and accessibility expectations of service providers. Results suggest that accessibility characteristics of the model can make a significant difference to front-line service delivery from the perspective of front-line protection workers.

A defining feature of the community and school based child welfare models was increased accessibility for families and workers. Through making themselves more accessible, the community and school based settings had some significant service delivery advantages including more regular, varied, …

Working Report #3: Use Of Legal Measures And Formal Authority (Service Provider Perspectives), Lirondel Hazineh, Gary Cameron Dec 2009

Working Report #3: Use Of Legal Measures And Formal Authority (Service Provider Perspectives), Lirondel Hazineh, Gary Cameron

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

The focus of this report is, across service delivery models, how front-line protection workers viewed their formal authority role and the extent to which they relied on legal measures in order to achieve protection goals. The analysis is guided by several overarching questions including (1) how does each model view the use of legal measures and formal authority? (2) How does each model impact service providers’ actual use of legal measures? (3) What value do workers place on the authority figure role? And (4) how effective is the use of formal authority in reaching child protection goals?

Type of program …

Perturbation Theory Analysis Of Attosecond Photoionization, Anthony F. Starace, Evgeny A. Pronin, M. V. Frolov, N. L. Manakov Dec 2009

Perturbation Theory Analysis Of Attosecond Photoionization, Anthony F. Starace, Evgeny A. Pronin, M. V. Frolov, N. L. Manakov

Anthony F. Starace Publications

Ionization of an atom by a few-cycle attosecond xuv pulse is analyzed using perturbation theory (PT), keeping terms in the transition amplitude up to second order in the pulse electric field. Within the PT approach, we present an ab initio parametrization of the ionized electron angular distribution (AD) using rotational invariance and symmetry arguments. This parametrization gives analytically the dependence of the AD on the carrier envelope phase (CEP), the polarization of the pulse, and on the ionized electron momentum direction, p^ . For the general case of an elliptically polarized pulse, we show that interference of the first- and …

Directed Coverage In Wireless Sensor Networks: Concept And Quality, Xiaole Bai, Lei Ding, Jin Teng, Sriram Chellappan, Changqing Xu, Dong Xuan

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we introduce a new type of coverage for wireless sensor networks, called Directed Coverage (D-Coverage). Basically, D-Coverage is the coverage provided by a sensor network monitoring an area between two boundaries, through which the intruder attempts to penetrates the area. We also study how to measure the quality of D-Coverage. Our first evaluation approach is a projection-Based simple approach, while our second approach is a more comprehensive Markov chain-based approach. Our evaluation approaches can accurately evaluate the quality and provide good guidelines for sensor network deployment and run-time repair. ©2009 IEEE.

Disentangling The Performance And Entrenchment Effect Of Family Shareholding: A Study Of Indian Corporate Governance, Manoranjan Pattanayak Dec 2009

Disentangling The Performance And Entrenchment Effect Of Family Shareholding: A Study Of Indian Corporate Governance, Manoranjan Pattanayak

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Using an econometric framework, we examine the nature of relation between Tobin's Q and family shareholding in India. While there is no obvious causality laid down by theoretical literature, empirical evidences show a wide range of findings. In the present work, by controlling for a host of factors, we document a non-linear relation between family share holding and firm value. In the literature, the issue of endogenous problem is highlighted in the context of ownership-performance relation. We address this concern via the instrumental variable regression method. Even though the curvilinear aspect of the relation between firm value and insider share …

Recursive Decomposition Of Progress Graphs, David A. Cape, Bruce M. Mcmillin, Benjamin W. Passer, Mayur Thakur

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Search of a state transition system is traditionally how deadlock detection for concurrent programs has been accomplished. This paper examines an approach to deadlock detection that uses geometric semantics involving the topo-logical notion of dihomotopy to partition the state space into components; after that the reduced state space is exhaustively searched. Prior work partitioned the state space inductively. in this paper we show that a recursive technique provides greater reduction of the size of the state transition system and therefore more efficient deadlock detection. If the preprocessing can be done efficiently, then for large problems we expect to see more …

L’Écriture De La Perte Chez Assia Djebar, Lila Kermas Dec 2009

L’Écriture De La Perte Chez Assia Djebar, Lila Kermas

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

This study proposes a reflexion on the feeling of “loss” as a source of literary creation. The different tensions generated by an hybrid identity of a character in a quest, especially in La disparition de la langue française (“disappearance of the French language”) by Assia Djebar ; what matters here is to see how the feeling of crisis and the split reveals itself and how it dissolves in and through (the process of) writing.

Le « Français De Rue » Et L’Écriture De La Guerre : Portée Et Signification, Jean-Fernand Bédia.

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

Louis-Ferdinand Céline, Ahmadou Kourouma, Emmanuel Dongala and Ken Saro-Wiwa made speeches of street, stigmatized like a “language with hooligan” (Quefellec, 2006), a model, at least an agent of the aesthetics of the language of writing of their romantic fictions on the wars. The occurrence of “French of street” whose vulgarity and indocility narratively build the “mythèmes” violence, hatred and horror, reveals the transgression of the linguistic standard, without deteriorating the significant intentionality of works.

Mutations Politiques Et Processus De Légitimation Culturelle : Considérations Sur Le Théâtre Populaire Camerounais, Pierre Fandio

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

All forms of theatre have never been perceived the same way in contemporary Cameroon. Whereas the written theatre relatively received an acceptable treatment from the official instances of recognition, the non-written one has always been excluded. This communication sets out to show how, from this marginalized position and palpably inspired at the same time from the Italian commedia dell’arte, the French vaudeville and the African traditional dramaturgic shape, a new and popular form of theatre came to existence. Thanks to the exceptional capacity of adaptation and innovation of its discourse and thematic, the offer of this “street dramaturgy” rather matches …

Damner Le Damier Ou Rédimer La Danse De La Terre Dans Le Meurtre Du Samedi Gloria De Raphaël Confiant, Hanétha Vété-Congolo

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

The value of the “damier”, a traditional dance from Martinique, is significant because it evokes cohesion, order and balance and symbolizes distinctive attributes from Martinique’s society at large. Martinique enters in a new era which characteristics are defined by regional development. This development is a break between the past and the present or with population’s intelligible referents and landmarks, and is represented between tradition and modernity, as a transformation led by urbanization. Traditions become shaky and in the novel, the city is unable to take on those rural values, symbolized by the “damier”.

Sparql Query Re-Writing For Spatial Datasets Using Partonomy Based Transformation Rules, Prateek Jain, Cory Andrew Henson, Amit P. Sheth, Peter Z. Yeh, Kunal Verma Dec 2009

Sparql Query Re-Writing For Spatial Datasets Using Partonomy Based Transformation Rules, Prateek Jain, Cory Andrew Henson, Amit P. Sheth, Peter Z. Yeh, Kunal Verma

Kno.e.sis Publications

Often the information present in a spatial knowledge base is represented at a different level of granularity and abstraction than the query constraints. For querying ontology’s containing spatial information, the precise relationships between spatial entities has to be specified in the basic graph pattern of SPARQL query which can result in long and complex queries. We present a novel approach to help users intuitively write SPARQL queries to query spatial data, rather than relying on knowledge of the ontology structure. Our framework re-writes queries, using transformation rules to exploit part-whole relations between geographical entities to address the mismatches between query …

A Local Qualitative Approach To Referral And Functional Trust, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Dharan Althuru, Cory Andrew Henson, Amit P. Sheth Dec 2009

A Local Qualitative Approach To Referral And Functional Trust, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Dharan Althuru, Cory Andrew Henson, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Trust and confidence are becoming key issues in diverse applications such as ecommerce, social networks, semantic sensor web, semantic web information retrieval systems, etc. Both humans and machines use some form of trust to make informed and reliable decisions before acting. In this work, we briefly review existing work on trust networks, pointing out some of its drawbacks. We then propose a local framework to explore two different kinds of trust among agents called referral trust and functional trust, that are modelled using local partial orders, to enable qualitative trust personalization. The proposed approach formalizes reasoning with trust, distinguishing between …
