It has been estimated that one third of the world's population does not have access to "adequate" health care. Some 1.6 billion people live in countries experiencing "concentrated" acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemics. Many countries in Africa--and other low-income countries--are in dire need of help providing adequate health care services to their citizens. They require more hands-on care from Western health workers--and training so more African health workers can eventually care for their own citizens. But these countries also need assistance acquiring and implementing both texts--the body of medical information potentially available to them--and technology--the means by which that …

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
Central to ethnographic construction and production of knowledge(s) is the fieldwork experience and the location of the knower. Anthropological fieldwork conventionally privileged knowing the Other and the going elsewhere. As a spatial practice, fieldwork refers to "a specific style, quality, and duration of dwelling"; that is distinguished from travel (Clifford 1997: 22). Territoriality of the field and prolonged immersion in the locality defined this fieldworker conducting fieldwork in the field (Gupta and Ferguson 1997). The growing acceptance and recognition of mobility among communities and the interface of the local and the global in everyday life of an individual …

Object Knowledge: Researching Objects In The Museum Experience, Elizabeth Wood, Kiersten F. Latham
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
This paper investigates an interdisciplinary perspective on museum research, offering a new orientation and methodology for fieldwork. It begins from the stance of "object knowledge", which describes the ways of knowing that come from human interaction with and study of physical objects. Next, is the documentation of the power of objects to define the lived experience of time, place, and identity, presented with an applied and theoretical perspective on tangible objects and their relationship to lived experience. Through object knowledge we argue that museums can better understand their impact and influence on visitors and define the ways that objects and …
Making Theatre-Making: Fieldwork, Rehearsal And Performance-Preparation, Kate Rossmanith
Making Theatre-Making: Fieldwork, Rehearsal And Performance-Preparation, Kate Rossmanith
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
In a large rented room in Sydney, Australia, on hot January days, a small group of practitioners have only three weeks to rehearse for a large production. 'Let's run that scene again. Let's just push through,” I hear them say over and over. As metaphors, ‘running' and ‘pushing' are not only articulated verbally, but the movement within the space and the presence of the Realpolitik of production create an adrenaline-like pulse. The director spends rehearsals barefoot with an unlit cigarette in his hand, which he might use as a bookmark or he shoves it behind his ear or plays with …
Forsaken Generation: Stress, Social Suffering And Strategies Among Working-Class Pensioners In Post-Socialist Moldova, Romania, Gerard A. Weber
Forsaken Generation: Stress, Social Suffering And Strategies Among Working-Class Pensioners In Post-Socialist Moldova, Romania, Gerard A. Weber
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation examines the lives of working-class pensioners in post-socialist, Galati, Romania. Its central thesis is that the transformation of Romania from socialism to capitalism beginning in 1989 has led to an "epidemic of stress" among retired, working-class people in the city. Marginalized by their age, class and location in the relatively economically underdeveloped region of Moldova, they have been among the hardest hit by the changes brought about with the introduction of neoliberal capitalism. Long familiar with life in a relatively stable economy, they have faced dramatic changes in this area since the revolution, including massive price instability and …

Reading And Responding To Children’S Books About Bullying, Kathy Everts Danielson, Jan Labonty
Teacher Education Faculty Publications
Which of the following scenarios is an example of bullying?
A. Older boys repeatedly steal a second-grader’s lunch money.
B. A group of girls start and perpetuate vicious rumours about a shy classmate.
C. On a daily basis, a boy makes fun of a peer’s old-fashioned clothes.
D. During recess, bigger kids push, shove, and taunt smaller children.
E. All of the above.
If you guessed E, you not only know a lot about test construction, you also understand the classic definition of bullying: “Bullying is a deliberate attempt to hurt another that is repeated over time,” (Craig, 1997, p. …

The Influence Of Aerobic Exercise On State Anxiety In College Students, Emily Carruth, Nadine Taylor
The Influence Of Aerobic Exercise On State Anxiety In College Students, Emily Carruth, Nadine Taylor
The Journal of Undergraduate Research
Many college students have feelings of state anxiety, a temporary emotional response that is described by subjective, perceived feelings of concern, stress, and apprehension. The present study measured state anxiety across participants separated into a control and experimental group, which performed an exercise routine. Participants were also designated as regular or non-exercisers. Individuals in the experimental group and those who do not normally exercise were predicted to show larger decreases in state anxiety. All participants completed the Beck Anxiety Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory, and Zung Self-rating Anxiety Scale at three separate sessions over a two-week time span. Results showed no …

Dancing In The Ashes, Vytautas Adolph Malesh
Dancing In The Ashes, Vytautas Adolph Malesh
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The following novel is the third draft of my creative thesis entitled Dancing in the Ashes . It is an exploration of the Detroit rave scene in its dying days, and it mixes real and imagined places and events in order to portray the essence of that time, if not the factuality. The bulk of the novel follows just over two weeks in the life of Thomas Kowalski, a drug dealer living with his parents in suburban Detroit. He parties constantly and seldom works except as necessary to keep his job at a local record store - an invaluable source …
Justifications Of A 21st Century Wind Ensemble Transcription Of Mozart's "Overture To The Magic Flute" Based Upon Late Eighteenth Century Ideology, Teresa Corinne Stewart
Justifications Of A 21st Century Wind Ensemble Transcription Of Mozart's "Overture To The Magic Flute" Based Upon Late Eighteenth Century Ideology, Teresa Corinne Stewart
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
I will create a transcription for wind ensemble of the "Overture to The Magic Flute " by WA Mozart. By completing this transcription, a standard orchestral work will be available in comparable quality and difficulty for wind ensemble. Although several simplified and one large concert band transcriptions have been made available during the 20th century, these arrangements were not consistent with late 18th century ideals of size and balance. This transcription will remain loyal to the original work through embracing the ideology of the 18th century musical mind. Through treatises, period writings and performance practice of Mozart's time, I will …
Artistic Distance And The Comedia: Lessons From Don Quijote, Matthew D. Stroud
Artistic Distance And The Comedia: Lessons From Don Quijote, Matthew D. Stroud
Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research
Don Quijote is a novel, perhaps even the first modern novel (Fuentes 15, Bloom 145). Practically from the date of its writing, however, it has been almost irresistibly viewed through the lens of theater—"Como casi es comedia la historia de don Quixote de la Mancha [ ... ]"in the words of Avellaneda (fol.lllr)—and a growing body of scholarship acknowledges the importance of theatricality to both the structure of the work and the way one interprets it. "Theatricality," as it turns out, is a very flexible term in many of these studies and the widely varying definitions of it have given …

Commanding The Green Centre Line In Normandy: A Case Study Of Division Command In The Second World War, Angelo N. Caravaggio
Commanding The Green Centre Line In Normandy: A Case Study Of Division Command In The Second World War, Angelo N. Caravaggio
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
This thesis examines the experiences of the 4th Canadian Armoured Division as it prepared for and carried out its role in the battle of Normandy and the libeation of France in 1944. The factors that limmited opportunities to practice the formation in large-scale exercises are noted as are the methods used by the General Officer Commanding, Major-General George Kitching, to compensate for the limitations. This thesis argues that through the development of an effective commander-staff dynamic Kitching, his staff and his subordinates commanders, were able to meet the challenges and chaos of combat in the final stages of the Normandy …

Bringing Down The Walls: How Technology Is Being Used To Thwart Parallel Importers Amid The International Confusion Concerning Exhaustion Of Rights, Ryan L. Vinelli
Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law
The note examines the tension between intellectual property rights and free trade, highlighting the conflict arising from market segmentation strategies employed by companies like Sony. It argues that the lack of a uniform international standard on the exhaustion of rights exacerbates this issue, suggesting that an international regime under the WTO could mitigate market segmentation and promote free trade.
