Trilling R'S, Shannon. O'Brien
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Immigration has become a hot button issue across the United States. Television newsmen dedicate hours of time to excoriate the "illegal invasion." I viewed the immigration debate as something not directly concerning me. I am a legal citizen of Hispanic descent. My mother is a naturalized citizen from Mexico. However, as the government conducted raids looking for illegal immigrants, my mother became more aware of her place as a Mexican woman living in the Midwest. She wondered whether people would assume she was illegal because of her accent and appearance. Our discussions prompted me to think about of my place …
Understanding In Healthcare Professional Involvement In Patient Internet Use, Neil. Morton
Understanding In Healthcare Professional Involvement In Patient Internet Use, Neil. Morton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Use of the Internet can increase patients' understanding about their medical conditions and offers opportunities to strengthen the patient-physician relationship, increase patient satisfaction, and improve health outcomes. However, physicians vary widely in the extent to which they accept patient online medical information seeking and make it part of the patient-physician relationship. This paper explores factors impacting the extent to which physicians advocate (encourage, speak in favor, or are supportive of) patient internet use. Specifically, using social cognitive theory as a theoretical base, this study develops a model of the determinants of physician advocation of patient use of the internet for …
Understanding Narcissism And Self-Esteem In Children, Rachel. Evans
Understanding Narcissism And Self-Esteem In Children, Rachel. Evans
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This study examined the empirical relationship between narcissism and self-esteem in an attempt to evaluate competing conceptualizations of narcissism. Participants were 236 children (mean age 11.3 years) in the fourth through eighth grades. Counter to earlier conceptions, which characterized narcissism as very high self-esteem, narcissism and self-esteem were slightly negatively correlated. Also, narcissism predicted several adjustment variables, including aggression. None of these relationships was mediated by self-esteem. Lastly, self-esteem moderated the relationship between narcissism and aggression in boys. Taken together, these lines of evidence point to a new conceptualization of narcissism, modeled after self-discrepancy theory, in which narcissism is conceptualized …
Using Emotion-Inducing Film Clips To Measure Emotional Coordination, Maureen Jane Leong-Kee
Using Emotion-Inducing Film Clips To Measure Emotional Coordination, Maureen Jane Leong-Kee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Synchronization research reveals that those who are able to coordinate behavior in time are more likely to feel positively towards one another. Unlike previous research that has taken a linear approach, I examine the dynamical nature of individuals' emotional coordination by investigating the overlap in their moment-to-moment emotional responses to positive and negative events in the form of film clips. By using the mouse program, I develop a new relationship paradigm and find that this measure is able to capture the nuances of emotional responses, and, more importantly, it is able to distinguish between relationship partners versus pairs of strangers. …

Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (Vegf), Bcl-2, And Bax Expression In Fibropapilloma Tumor Tissue And Skin Tissue Of Sea Turtles, Angela. Bancalari-Schmidlapp
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
In sea turtles, the study of the etiology and development of fibropapillomatosis is not fully understood. Sea turtle fibropapillomatosis is a disease characterized by the proliferation of skin fibropapillomas and occasional internal fibromas. In this study, sea turtle fibropapilloma tumor and healthy tissue samples were used to look at VEGF, BCL-2 and Bax expression. Cancer tumors have a well established pattern of protein expression that involves overexpression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), responsible for the growth of new blood vessels, and a high BCL-2 to Bax ratio that leads to uncontrolled cell proliferation. Real time PCR was used to …

Vibration, Buckling And Impact Of Carbon Nanotubes, Demetris. Pentaras
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Natural frequencies of the double and triple-walled carbon nanotubes are determined exactly and approximately for both types. Approximate solutions are found by using Bubnov-Galerkin and Petrov-Galerkin methods. For the first time explicit expressions are obtained for the natural frequencies of double and triple-walled carbon nanotubes for different combinations of boundary conditions. Comparison of the results with recent studies shows that the above methods constitute quick and effective alternative techniques to exact solution for studying the vibration properties of carbon nanotubes. The natural frequencies of the clamped-clamped double-walled carbon nanotubes are obtained; exact solution is provided and compared with the solution …

We Are What We Eat, Marlena Kay Dates
We Are What We Eat, Marlena Kay Dates
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
In the modern United States, capitalism is the predominant cultural value that structures the food system. The current American relationship to food is strained, at best, as two-thirds of Americans experience overweight and obesity and are at risk for a number of serious health complications. An understanding of the historic and political-economic aspects of the American food system is necessary to address the effects of our modern food habits on our ideas of our selves. This thesis analyzes the types of foods Americans eat, why they make the food choices that they do, how they feel about their eating habits …
What Keeps Nurses In Nursing, Dorothy J. Dunn
What Keeps Nurses In Nursing, Dorothy J. Dunn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The purpose of this study was to explore what keeps nurses in nursing by examining the impact of the relational experiences between the nurse and her or his patient in the context of the nursing situation. Heideggerian hermeneutic phenomenology grounded the study and was the method used to interpret the registered nurse participants' meaning of their everydayness. The nurses' first hand perspectives elicited implications for nursing practice. This qualitative research study examined what keeps nurses in nursing. The eight registered nurse participants provided rich descriptive data from which four relational themes emerged: Practicing from Inner Core Beliefs, Understanding the Other …
Wool And Water, Kira. Frederick
Wool And Water, Kira. Frederick
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Wool and Water is a creative work of 36 poems. This collection examines the relationship between the silent and vocal, between the pastoral and urban. By reconfiguring and retelling the fairy tales and nursery rhymes, this collection seeks to challenge the status quo through trickster-like diction. Themes that are prevalent include: alienation, nourishment, anonymity, and the female body. From the concrete to the lyric, Wool and Water relies upon the process of questioning patriarchal guises. These poems intersect in order to rectify the past and make amends with the present. The female voices that drive these poems are multi-generational.

You're Too Late!", Colleen. Supanich
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
In this thesis I explore the circumstances in which pregnant Guatemalan Mayan women in South Florida communities found themselves. A local non-profit organization, the Guatemalan Maya Center (GMC), offered assistance to pregnant Mayan women to secure biomedical prenatal care, yet many continued to underutilize these services. The decision to utilize this form of care largely depended on whether a woman received care from a traditional midwife in the community. Women receiving care from a midwife generally did not seek biomedical care until late in their pregnancies. Women unable to locate a midwife often incorporated biomedical care once they suspected pregnancy. …
Value-Based Mandated Health Benefits, Amy B. Monahan
Value-Based Mandated Health Benefits, Amy B. Monahan
University of Colorado Law Review
Mandated health benefit laws figure prominently in health reform debates. These laws, which are primarily enacted by the states, require health insurers to cover specific medical treatment, services, or supplies such as mental health treatment, mammograms, or diabetes testing supplies. Critics argue that mandated health benefit laws increase health insurance costs, decrease consumer choice, and often are the product of rent-seeking, rather than sound public policy. This Article seeks to further the discussion of mandated health benefit laws by systemically identifying permissible rationales for such laws. The justifications identified include addressing (1) market failure that leads to nonavailability of coverage, …
The Solitary Attempt: International Trade Law And The Insulation Of Domestic Greenhouse Gas Trading Schemes From Foreign Emissions Credit Markets, Elias Leake Quinn
The Solitary Attempt: International Trade Law And The Insulation Of Domestic Greenhouse Gas Trading Schemes From Foreign Emissions Credit Markets, Elias Leake Quinn
University of Colorado Law Review
This Comment examines the influence of international trade agreements on the implementation of a hypothetical, domestically- scaled cap-and-trade scheme to facilitate greenhouse gas emissions reductions in the United States. Several areas of intersection are examined, including the contemplation of the credits as commodities for trade and the construction of measures designed to offset any competitive disadvantage such a system might put on domestic companies. The Comment concludes that a domestically-scaled cap-and-trade scheme, while an important step in mitigating global climate change, is vulnerable to challenges under existing international trade agreements. Such challenges, if successful, may in turn drive the convergence …
A Neglected Option: The Contributions Of State Responsibility For Genocide To Transitional Justice, Saira Mohamed
A Neglected Option: The Contributions Of State Responsibility For Genocide To Transitional Justice, Saira Mohamed
University of Colorado Law Review
Despite the pervasive involvement of government bureaucracies in perpetrating genocide and other atrocities, the international community's efforts to assist societies emerging from these horrors have relied primarily on establishing the guilt of individuals in criminal tribunals, rather than addressing the wrongs committed by governments through other means. The International Court of Justice diverged from this approach to transitional justice when it decided in 2007 that states themselves can be held civilly responsible for committing genocide. Characterizing the decision as reviving the concept of collective guilt in contravention of accepted principles of transitional justice, some warned that holding states responsible for …
Aliens In The Garden, Jared A. Goldstein
Aliens In The Garden, Jared A. Goldstein
University of Colorado Law Review
This Article examines environmental rhetoric and argues that a nationalist conception of nature has long distorted environmental policies. Environmental discourse frequently seeks to explain the natural world by reference to the world of nations, a phenomenon that can be characterizeda s the "nationalizationo f nature." A contemporary example of the nationalization of nature is the rhetoric of "Invasive species," which depicts harmful foreign plants and animals in ways that bear an uncanny resemblance to the demonization of foreigners by opponents of immigration. A typical newspaper article about invasive species, bearing the headline "Eeeeek! The eels are coming!," warned about an …
Adapting To Post-Oil Futures: Community Action, The Urban Sustainability Retrofit, And The Writings Of James Howard Kunstler, Brian Muller
Adapting To Post-Oil Futures: Community Action, The Urban Sustainability Retrofit, And The Writings Of James Howard Kunstler, Brian Muller
University of Colorado Law Review
James Howard Kunstler has written prolifically about the problems of sustainability and livability in the modern American city. This Essay discusses Kunstler's view of adaptation and compares it to the various efforts underway in cities across the United States to address problems of climate change and resource depletion, which I generally term the urban "sustainability retrofit." Kunstler describes an adaptive path that is brutal, driven by resource scarcity, social collapse, and environmental disaster. Although Kunstler presents an extreme view, this Essay argues that his books are important because they demand that readers reflect about the conditions under which sustainable and …

Amorous Doctor, Elsa. Cantor
Amorous Doctor, Elsa. Cantor
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The anonymous French seventeenth-century play le Docteur Amoureux (1691) was written for theThéâtre Italien, the Italian troupe acting in Paris. It incorporated the techniques of both Old French farce and the commedia dell'arte into mainstream comic modes, in the manner of Moliáere but with some amusing twists. Le Docteur Amoureux remains a significant part of the French comic canon and the historical corpus of drama, yet it has never been translated into English. With prefatory commentary on the text and the period, the genres of stage performance, and the challenges involved in translating historical texts, this first translation of le …
Adaptive Power Control In 802.11 Networks, Serkan. Dural
Adaptive Power Control In 802.11 Networks, Serkan. Dural
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
IEEE 802.11 networks successfully satisfy high data demands and are cheaper compared to cellular networks. Modern mobile computers and phones are equipped with 802.11 and are VoIP capable. Current network designs do not dynamically accommodate changes in the usage. We propose a dynamic power control algorithm that provides greater capacity within a limited geographic region. Most other power algorithms necessitate changes in 802.11 requiring hardware changes. Proposed algorithm only requires firmware updates to enable dynamic control of APs transmit power. We use earlier studies to determine the limit of the number of users to optimize power. By lowering transmit power …
Acoustic Far Field Of A Turbulent Boundary Layer Flow Calculated From Rans Simulations Of The Flow, Jean-Baptiste. Blanc
Acoustic Far Field Of A Turbulent Boundary Layer Flow Calculated From Rans Simulations Of The Flow, Jean-Baptiste. Blanc
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Boundary layers are regions where turbulence develops easily. In the case where the flow occurs on a surface showing a certain degree of roughness, turbulence eddies will interact with the roughness elements and will produce an acoustic field. This thesis aims at predicting this type of noise with the help of the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation of a wall jet using the Reynolds Average Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations. A frequency spectrum is reconstructed using a representation of the turbulence with uncorrelated sheets of vorticity. Both aerodynamic and acoustic results are compared to experimental measurements of the flow. The CFD simulation …

My study's objective was to assess cardiac function during the development of diastolic dysfunction and to gain insight into the pathophysiological impact of the RCM cTnI mutation. Cardiac function was monitored in cTnI193His mice and wild-type littermates for a period of 12 months. It progressed gradually from abnormal relaxation to diastolic dysfunction characterized with micro- echocardiography by a reversed E/A ratio, increased deceleration time, and prolonged isovolumetric relaxation time. The negative impact of cTnI193His on cardiac function was further demonstrated …
Attitudinal Study Of Older Adult African Americans' Interaction With Computers, Nigel Leon Lovell-Martin
Attitudinal Study Of Older Adult African Americans' Interaction With Computers, Nigel Leon Lovell-Martin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
It was estimated that 35 million people age 65 or older lived in the United States in 2000. Of that number 2.8 million were Black/African American. The U.S. Census Bureau's (2000) population projections show that there will be 70 million older adults age 65 or older by 2030 and African Americans are expected to comprise over 12% of that population. In 1993 older adults had made less elective use of computers than younger adults, accounting for 24.2% of those age 55 to 64 and 4.9% of adults over age 65. By 2003 adults over age 65 recorded a 20.1% increase …

"Stop-It Anti-Fidgeting Device, Scott A. Barnard
"Stop-It Anti-Fidgeting Device, Scott A. Barnard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Fidgeting and otherwise constant movements in individuals can be beneficial in those who suffer from Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder or Generalized Anxiety Disorder as well as others. However this constant movement can also be a distraction to others as well as protrude an air of no self confidence. It is the drawbacks from these actions that we wish to address. By developing an intelligent system that can detect these motions and alert the user, it will allow the wearer of the device to self correct. It is in this self control that one may exhibit more confidence or simply reduce the …

Assessment Of The Effect Of Adult Education On Sustainable Development In Jamaica, Pauline. Mclean
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
An assessment of the knowledge and the behaviors associated with sustainable development was conducted to determine the effect of adult education on sustainable development in Jamaica. The discourse for leadership commitment and governance, as well as continuous learning has its tenets in the discovery that the programs do not significantly address sustainable development (SD). While knowledge was significantly addressed, the programs failed to motivate useful action. The study has provided an explanation of the barriers, costs, and limits to sustainability so that program planners can devise transfer of learning strategies that foster adaptation and mitigation. The investigation involved 35 adult …
Bleeding Roots, Tinea. Williams

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Scholars of the literary depictions of lynching have given the majority of their attention to the emasculation of the black male, but the representation of the black female lynch victim has been overlooked. My thesis examines the deaths of black women that had the same effect as lynching practices used against men. This specific literary form of lynching will concentrate on two plays: Mary P. Burrill's They That Sit in Darkness (1919) and Marita Bonner's Exit: An Illusion (1929) and two novels by Toni Morrison, Beloved and Sula. Considering the contours of these black female deaths we can expand the …
