Connecting Youth And Communities: Customized Career Planning For Youth With Psychiatric Disabilities, Kim Brown, University Of Montana Rural Institute Dec 2009

Connecting Youth And Communities: Customized Career Planning For Youth With Psychiatric Disabilities, Kim Brown, University Of Montana Rural Institute

Employment

Young people with psychiatric disabilities are significantly overrepresented in the juvenile justice system, tend to be employed sporadically if at all, and frequently have negative connections within and to their communities. Recent research conducted in Montana with youth who have developmental and/or physical disabilities demonstrates the effectiveness of using a customized career planning model to increase linkages to resources and access to community- based employment. Side benefits include improved self-esteem and positive community connections. The customization model holds promise as a way to reduce the risk factors young people with psychiatric disabilitiesf ace and increase the resiliency factors that can …

Changes In Self-Schema Structure In Cognitive Therapy For Major Depressive Disorder: A Randomized Clinical Trial., David J A Dozois, Peter J Bieling, Irene Patelis-Siotis, Lori Hoar, Susan Chudzik, Katie Mccabe, Henny A Westra Dec 2009

Changes In Self-Schema Structure In Cognitive Therapy For Major Depressive Disorder: A Randomized Clinical Trial., David J A Dozois, Peter J Bieling, Irene Patelis-Siotis, Lori Hoar, Susan Chudzik, Katie Mccabe, Henny A Westra

Psychology Publications

Negative cognitive structure (particularly for interpersonal content) has been shown in some research to persist past a current episode of depression and potentially to be a stable marker of vulnerability for depression (D. J. A. Dozois, 2007; D. J. A. Dozois & K. S. Dobson, 2001a). Given that cognitive therapy (CT) is highly effective for treating the acute phase of a depressive episode and that this treatment also reduces the risk of relapse and recurrence, it is possible that CT may alter these stable cognitive structures. In the current study, patients were randomly assigned to CT+ pharmacotherapy (n = 21) …

Adding A Motivational Interviewing Pretreatment To Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Generalized Anxiety Disorder: A Preliminary Randomized Controlled Trial., Henny A Westra, Hal Arkowitz, David J A Dozois

Psychology Publications

Seventy-six individuals with a principal diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) were randomly assigned to receive either an MI pretreatment or no pretreatment (NPT), prior to receiving CBT. Significant group differences favoring the MI-CBT group were observed on the hallmark GAD symptom of worry and on therapist-rated homework compliance, which mediated the impact of treatment group on worry reduction. Adding MI pretreatment to CBT was specifically and substantively beneficial for individuals with high worry severity at baseline. There was evidence of relapse at 6-month follow-up for high severity individuals who received MI-CBT, but significant moderator effects favoring the high severity …

Voting Behavior And Political Participation, James Lai Dec 2009

Voting Behavior And Political Participation, James Lai

Ethnic Studies

Asian Americans have been labeled as the "next sleeping giant" in American politics in key geopolitical states such as California, Texas, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, and Washington. 1 Much of this perception is fueled by the dramatic growth of Asian American communities in these and other states as a result of federal immigration reforms beginning in 1965. This section highlights the major areas of Asian American political participation and behavior that will likely determine whether Asian American politics will live up to this label. These include voter behavior and turnout in local, state, and federal elections as recently as …

Acquiring Capacity And Acquiring Behavior Of Chinese Firms, Jianguo Chen, Jing Chi, Shu Zhu Dec 2009

Acquiring Capacity And Acquiring Behavior Of Chinese Firms, Jianguo Chen, Jing Chi, Shu Zhu

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

China's short stock market history has already seen three merger waves, yet little is known of the performance drivers of acquirers. Using an acquirer's announced target value as the proxy of the firm's acquiring capacity, the link between that and its operational and/or financial conditions was investigated. Cash reserve ratio was significant in determining capacity: a firm with a higher cash ratio will, on average, take a larger target firm in both absolute value and relative measure. A larger acquirer size is associated with a larger takeover size, but a lesser target ratio is relative to the size of the …

Croatian Smes: Current Stage And Prospect, Ljiljana Viducic, Snjezana Pivac, Ana Rimac Smiljanic, Sandra Pepur

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Small businesses in Croatia are recognized as a locomotive for economic restructuring and increase of rate of employment. Bank credits have become more accessible in Croatia for the SME sector following privatization by foreign banks, which now participate with more than 90 percent in total bank assets of the country. Although foreign banks had a positive impact on the domestic banking market they tended to prefer household and large scale enterprise lending. Besides creating an equity gap, especially for the earlier stage non-technology based SMEs, asymmetric information leads to imperfect lending (credit rationing) even for prospective SMEs with fast revenue …

Risk Aversion, Entrepreneurial Risk, And Portfolio Selection, Hongyan Fang, John R. Nofsinger Dec 2009

Risk Aversion, Entrepreneurial Risk, And Portfolio Selection, Hongyan Fang, John R. Nofsinger

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Do entrepreneurs consider the risk of their business equity when making investment portfolio allocations? Many people compartmentalize different risks and consider them separately, called mental accounting. Alternatively, the risk substitution hypothesis suggests that entrepreneurs would offset high business income risk by selecting a more conservative investment portfolio. we examine these two hypotheses which have implications for measuring risk tolerance. We find that households with proprietary income show higher risk tolerance than non-entrepreneurs do. Further evidence suggests that a comprehensive measure of relative risk aversion that incorporates households' business income is more reliable and more consistent with their reported risk preference …

Clustering Research Activity In Communication Doctoral Programs: Relationship Of Publication Productivity And Department Size, Timothy D. Stephen Dec 2009

Clustering Research Activity In Communication Doctoral Programs: Relationship Of Publication Productivity And Department Size, Timothy D. Stephen

Communication Faculty Scholarship

This study extends previous work relating contemporary approaches to the comparative evaluation of doctoral programs, focusing on the 2004 NCA study (based on perceptual measures) and the ComVista system (based on publication patterns). Coding and analyzing the ComVista data for topical content revealed 17 clusters of intellectual activity in the field, grouped doctoral programs into nine categories of publication frequency and distribution, and found substantial prediction of NCA ratings for perceived quality of doctoral faculty. Results suggest that these data are principally based on peer perceptions of faculty publication activity, that more specialized publication activities tend to be perceived more …

Proposed Framework For Understanding Information Security Culture And Practices In The Saudi Context, Mohammed Alnatheer, Karen Nelson

Australian Information Security Management Conference

An examination of Information Security (IS) and Information Security Management (ISM) research in Saudi Arabia has shown the need for more rigorous studies focusing on the implementation and adoption processes involved with IS culture and practices. Overall, there is a lack of academic and professional literature about ISM and more specifically IS culture in Saudi Arabia. Therefore, the overall aim of this paper is to identify issues and factors that assist the implementation and the adoption of IS culture and practices within the Saudi environment. The goal of this paper is to identify the important conditions for creating an information …

Review Of The Evidence Used In The Description Of Currently Recognized Cetacean Subspecies, William F. Perrin, James G. Mead, Robert L. Brownell Jr. Dec 2009

Review Of The Evidence Used In The Description Of Currently Recognized Cetacean Subspecies, William F. Perrin, James G. Mead, Robert L. Brownell Jr.

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

We reviewed the subspecies listed by Rice (1998) and those described since (a total of 49, in 19 species), assessing them against the criteria recommended by the recent Workshop on Shortcomings of Cetacean Taxonomy in Relation to Needs of Conservation and Management (Reeves et al., 2004). The workshop suggested that the subspecies concept can be construed to cover two types of entities: a) lineages diverging but not quite far along the continuum of divergence (still having significant gene flow with another lineage or lineages) to be judged as species, and b) lineages that may well be species but for which …

Modified Stage-Gate: A Conceptual Model Of Virtual Product Development Process, N. Ale Ebrahim, S. Ahmed, Z. Taha

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

In today’s dynamic marketplace, manufacturing companies are under strong pressure to introduce new products for long-term survival with their competitors. Nevertheless, every company cannot cope up progressively or immediately with the market requirements due to knowledge dynamics being experienced in the competitive milieu. Increased competition and reduced product life cycles put force upon companies to develop new products faster. In response to these pressing needs, there should be some new approach compatible in flexible circumstances. This paper presents a solution based on the popular Stage-Gate system, which is closely linked with virtual team approach. Virtual teams can provide a platform …

Bipolar Affective Disorder With Co-Morbid Substance Abuse In Relation To Criminal Offending, E.A. Sorketti Dec 2009

Bipolar Affective Disorder With Co-Morbid Substance Abuse In Relation To Criminal Offending, E.A. Sorketti

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

High rates of co-morbid alcohol and drug disorders have previously been found among individuals with severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorders. Clinical and social outcomes have been reported to be worse in this group and service costs greater than in individuals with severe mental illness only. Men with schizophrenia who also had a record of substance misuse were over eight times more likely to appear among the violent offenders, and four times more likely to be convicted of homicide, than those without co morbid substance misuse. A similar pattern was found in affective disorders. The prevalence …

Financing Channels And The Performance Of Chinese Small And Medium High-Tech Enterprises, Yanwei Chen, Liang Lei Dec 2009

Financing Channels And The Performance Of Chinese Small And Medium High-Tech Enterprises, Yanwei Chen, Liang Lei

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

China's astonishing economic growth in recent years has attracted many research interests. It is well documented that small and medium-sized enterprises have become a major driving force making China's economic miracle. Financing is critical to small business; however, there are limited studies on financing sources for Chinese small business and how different financing sources affect the performance of small business. This paper investigates the influence of different financing channels on the performance of Chinese small and medium sized high-tech enterprises. We find that small firms in China rely heavily on individual financing due to the difficulty in obtaining external financing. …

Qualitative Factors As Determinants Of Continued Success:An Examination Of Ebusiness Entrepreneurial Firms Using The Newventure Template, Ervin L. Black, F. Greg Burton, Peter M. Johnson

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

In this study, we analyze eBusiness entrepreneurs nominated by the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award program to ascertain whether qualitative factors are correlated with success. We find qualitative factors are incrementally informative above and beyond the information provided by quantitative factors. More specifically, firms that are able to maintain their innovative strategies by improving upon the product (or service) they offer and are able to meet the long-term needs of the customer are more likely to experience increased sales growth and have greater access to capital which results in a successful harvest strategy.

Spatio-Temporal Relationship Between Water Depletion And Root Distribution Patterns Of Centaurea Solstitialis And Two Native Perennials, Stephen L. Young, Guy B. Kyser, Jacob N. Barney, Victor P. Claassen, Joseph M. Ditomaso Dec 2009

Spatio-Temporal Relationship Between Water Depletion And Root Distribution Patterns Of Centaurea Solstitialis And Two Native Perennials, Stephen L. Young, Guy B. Kyser, Jacob N. Barney, Victor P. Claassen, Joseph M. Ditomaso

West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte

In a 2-year field study, we quantified lateral root growth patterns and soil water depletion dynamics in the invasive annual Centaurea solstitialis and two native perennials, Elymus glaucus and Grindelia camporum. Centaurea solstitialis produced lateral roots most actively from early April to mid-June, during the late rosette to spiny seedhead stage while both root growth and water depletion were completed before flowering. In the wet year, roots were evenly distributed throughout the soil profile to 180 cm deep. Lack of deep soil moisture recharge in the second year restricted root distribution to shallow soil depths (< 60 cm). In contrast to C. solstitialis, …

Towards Optimal Effort Distribution In Process Design Under Uncertainty, With Application To Education, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Dec 2009

Towards Optimal Effort Distribution In Process Design Under Uncertainty, With Application To Education, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In most application areas, we need to take care of several (reasonably independent) participants. For example, in controlling economics, we must make sure that all the economic regions prosper. In controlling environment, we want to guarantee that all the geographic regions have healthy environment. In education, we want to make sure that all the students learn all the needed knowledge and skills.

In real life, the amount of resources is limited, so we face the problem of "optimally" distributing these resources between different objects.

What is a reasonable way to formalize "optimally"? For each of the participants, preferences can be …
