Investigation Of A Neutrosophic Group, A. Elrawy, Florentin Smarandache, Ayat A. Temraz Jan 2009

Investigation Of A Neutrosophic Group, A. Elrawy, Florentin Smarandache, Ayat A. Temraz

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

We use a neutrosophic set, instead of an intuitionistic fuzzy because the neutrosophic set is more general, and it allows for independent and partial independent components, while in an intuitionistic fuzzy set, all components are totally dependent. In this article, we present and demonstrate the concept of neutrosophic invariant subgroups. We delve into the exploration of this notion to establish and study the neutrosophic quotient group. Further, we give the concept of a neutrosophic normal subgroup as a novel concept.

Annacarla Scenes, Michael Mauldin Jan 2009

Annacarla Scenes, Michael Mauldin

New Mexico Composers' Archive

After enjoying Annacarla (my composing and teaching retreat in northern New Mexico) for four years, I realized that I had written a number of pieces there and had never been "dry" while composing there. But, outside of "The Valley at Annacarla" for the Durango Youth Symphony, I had not written music "about" what I saw and experienced there. These five short scenes may seem like fleeting visions or quixotic journal entries, but they represent brief but eternal moments of connection with the sacred that is all around us, "All That Is."

Corporate Social Responsibility Of Architectural Design Firms Towards Sustainable Built Environment In South Africa, Ayman Ahmed Ezzat Othman Jan 2009

Corporate Social Responsibility Of Architectural Design Firms Towards Sustainable Built Environment In South Africa, Ayman Ahmed Ezzat Othman

Architectural Engineering

The construction industry makes a vital contribution to the social and economic development of every country. Buildings provide their users with places for housing, education, culture, medication, business, leisure and entertainment. None of these buildings will perform its function unless supported with efficient road networks, superlative telecommunications facilities, water and electricity. On the other hand, the construction industry has major impacts on the environment. It is a very large consumer of non-renewable resources, a substantial source of waste, pollution, land dereliction and energy consumption. This highlights the responsibility of present generations to use the available resources in a way that …

Offering Rss Feeds: Does It Help To Gain Competitive Advantage?, Dan Ma Jan 2009

Offering Rss Feeds: Does It Help To Gain Competitive Advantage?, Dan Ma

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Nowadays, many Websites have adopted the really simple syndication (RSS) technology to deliver online content to visitors. In this paper, I build an analytical model to examine how the offering of RSS feeds impact the number of visitors, total traffic load, and profit of Websites in a competitive setting. I show that although RSS can always attract more visitors, it may reduce the Website's profit. Interestingly, in a competitive market there are cases that the RSS feeds hurt the offering Website but benefit the competing Website instead. The conditions under which these will happen are derived. I also study the …

Tuning On-Air Signatures For Balancing Performance And Confidentiality, Baihua Zheng, Wang-Chien Lee, Peng Liu, Dik Lun Lee, Xuhua Ding Jan 2009

Tuning On-Air Signatures For Balancing Performance And Confidentiality, Baihua Zheng, Wang-Chien Lee, Peng Liu, Dik Lun Lee, Xuhua Ding

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we investigate the trade off between performance and confidentiality in signature-based air indexing schemes for wireless data broadcast. Two metrics, namely, false drop probability and false guess probability, are defined to quantify the filtering efficiency and confidentiality loss of a signature scheme. Our analysis reveals that false drop probability and false guess probability share a similar trend as the tuning parameters of a signature scheme change and it is impossible to achieve a low false drop probability and a high false guess probability simultaneously. In order to balance the performance and confidentiality, we perform an analysis to …

Dynamic Web Service Selection For Reliable Web Service Composition, San-Yih Hwang, Ee Peng Lim, Chien-Hsiang Lee, Cheng-Hung Chen Jan 2009

Dynamic Web Service Selection For Reliable Web Service Composition, San-Yih Hwang, Ee Peng Lim, Chien-Hsiang Lee, Cheng-Hung Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper studies the dynamic web service selection problem in a failure-prone environment, which aims to determine a subset of Web services to be invoked at run-time so as to successfully orchestrate a composite web service. We observe that both the composite and constituent web services often constrain the sequences of invoking their operations and therefore propose to use finite state machine to model the permitted invocation sequences of Web service operations. We assign each state of execution an aggregated reliability to measure the probability that the given state will lead to successful execution in the context where each web …

Integrated Resource Allocation And Scheduling In Bidirectional Flow Shop With Multi-Machine And Cos Constraints, Hoong Chuin Lau, Zhengyi Zhao, Shuzhi Sam Ge Jan 2009

Integrated Resource Allocation And Scheduling In Bidirectional Flow Shop With Multi-Machine And Cos Constraints, Hoong Chuin Lau, Zhengyi Zhao, Shuzhi Sam Ge

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

An integer programming (IP) model is proposed for integrated resource allocation and operation scheduling for a multiple job-agents system. Each agent handles a specific job-list in a bidirectional flowshop. For the individual agent scheduling problem, a formulation is proposed in continuous time domain and compared with an IP formulation in discrete time domain. Of particular interest is the formulation of the machine utilization function-- both in continuous time and discrete time. Fast heuristic methods are proposed with the relaxation of the machine capacity. For the integrated resource allocation and scheduling problem, a linear programming relaxation approach is applied to solve …

Synthesis Of Surface Composites Using Friction Stir Processing, Bharat Gattu Jan 2009

Synthesis Of Surface Composites Using Friction Stir Processing, Bharat Gattu

Masters Theses

"Composite materials have an edge over monolithic materials due to higher strength/stiffness - to - density ratios, improved fatigue and wear resistance and better high temperature properties. Surface composites provide improved tribological properties such as wear resistance, friction coefficient and corrosion resistance. Friction stir processing (FSP) which originated from friction stir welding (FSW - a method for joining aluminum alloys) is a solid state technique to modify the microstructure of the alloys. During FSP the frictional heat generated at the tool - work piece interface plasticizes the material allowing it to flow around the pin. The combined effect of the …

Preventing Chemical Product Failure, Kenneth Ombete Jan 2009

Preventing Chemical Product Failure, Kenneth Ombete

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate a research methodology to prevent chemical product failures. This methodology extends the risk in early design (RED) method for prevention of failure in electromechanical products to include products with chemical subsystems. Inclusion of this domain is demanded by the ever-growing semiconductor and energy industries. The RED method was extended by first identifying principal chemical failure modes and adding them to the failure mode taxonomy. The RED database was then augmented with historical failures of products that included chemical subsystems. Finally, the extension was validated with a case study of a fuel cell"--Abstract, …

Investigating The Impact Of Microbial Interactions With Geologic Media On Geophysical Properties, Caroline A. Davis Jan 2009

Investigating The Impact Of Microbial Interactions With Geologic Media On Geophysical Properties, Caroline A. Davis

Doctoral Dissertations

"The goals of this study were to investigate the effect of: (1) microbial metabolic byproducts, microbial growth, and biofilm formation on the low frequency electrical properties of porous media, (2) biofilm formation on acoustic wave properties, and (3) the natural electrical (self-potential) signatures associated with an in-situ biological permeable reactive barrier (PRB). The results suggest: (1) increases in electrolytic conductivity are consistent with increased concentrations of organic acids and biosurfactants; (2) mineral weathering promoted by organic acids causes increases in electrolytic conductivity, concomitant with increases in major cation concentrations; (3) interfacial conductivity generally parallels microbial cell concentrations and biofilm formation; …

Feminizing Capital: A Corporate Imperative, Darren Rosenblum Jan 2009

Feminizing Capital: A Corporate Imperative, Darren Rosenblum

Faculty Publications

(Excerpt)

Recent economic events have turned the relationship between the public sector and the corporate world upside-down. The as-yet-unnamed financial crisis led governments to intervene in the private sector at levels not seen since the Great Depression. This crisis has exposed the need for new leadership in the corporate world and a new influx of public ideas in the private sector. Gendered understandings of economic relations have surfaced, with some arguing that testosterone encourages excessive greed in boom cycles and fear in bust cycles and that "the meltdown's a guy thing." Beyond allegations of causing the crisis, men have received …

Using Keyword Search Terms In E-Discovery And How They Relate To Issues Of Responsiveness, Privilege, Evidence Standards, And Rube Goldberg, Gregory L. Fordham Jan 2009

Using Keyword Search Terms In E-Discovery And How They Relate To Issues Of Responsiveness, Privilege, Evidence Standards, And Rube Goldberg, Gregory L. Fordham

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

The emergence of digital evidence and the widespread implementation of e-discovery has brought both benefit and repercussion. In many respects, digital evidence has proven to be a better truth detector than its paper counterpart. At the same time, the volumes in which digital evidence exists make time-tested discovery techniques impractical. In fact, so significant are the technological differences between paper and digital evidence that even the handling procedures require considerable overhaul.

“Medical” Monitoring For Non-Medical Harms: Evaluating The Reasonable Necessity Of Measures To Avoid Identity Fraud After A Data Breach, James Graves Jan 2009

“Medical” Monitoring For Non-Medical Harms: Evaluating The Reasonable Necessity Of Measures To Avoid Identity Fraud After A Data Breach, James Graves

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

In July 2005, “reformed” hacker Albert Gonzalez noticed an insecure wireless network at a Marshalls department store in Miami. After exploiting the vulnerability, Gonzalez and his accomplices installed programs that captured credit card numbers. They stored the credit card numbers on servers in Latvia and Ukraine, created ATM cards using some of the numbers, and used those cards to withdraw hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash. Fifteen months later, Marshalls’ parent company, TJX, announced that forty-five million of its customers’ credit card numbers had been exposed to the thieves.

Ecology And Molecular Phylogenetics Of Hydnora (Hydnoraceae) In Southern Africa, Jay Francis Bolin Jan 2009

Ecology And Molecular Phylogenetics Of Hydnora (Hydnoraceae) In Southern Africa, Jay Francis Bolin

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The Hydnoraceae are a clade of root holoparasitic angiosperms that contain two small genera, Hydnora and Prosopanche. This study, focused on Hydnora, presents novel data regarding the pollination biology, germination ecology, parasite-host nutritional relationships, and the molecular systematics of this group. Experimental addition of the primary pollinator, Dermestes maculatus to Hydnora africana chamber flowers demonstrated beetle imprisonment during the carpellate stage. Changes in the inner surfaces of the androecial chamber allowed beetle escape after pollen release. Most beetles escaped, dusted with viable pollen, three days after pollen release. To investigate germination ecology, aqueous root extracts of host and …

Ecology Of Neotropical Arboreal Snakes And Behavior Of New World Mollusk-Eating Snakes, Julie M. Ray

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The Neotropics is a biologically diverse region that provides man opportunities for ecological and behavioral studies. I utilized the speciose ophidian fauna of central Panama to explore the general ecology of arboreal snakes, the defensive behaviors of the snake community, and the diet of mollusk-eating snakes. I studied arboreal species to understand interspecilic relationships in several morphometric characters and to examine preferences in habitat. There were significant morphometric differences in relative length of jaw, mass, tail length, and size at midbody. The arboreal realm was partitioned among species by distance to ground, distance to water, and diameter of the perch. …

A Meta-Analysis Of Supplemental Educational Services (Ses) Provider Effects On Student Achievement, Shanan L. Chappell

Teaching & Learning Theses & Dissertations

The 2001 renewal of the United States' Title I program, which provides federal funds to schools with large populations of low-income students, instituted the Supplemental Educational Services (SES) program in which schools in their third year of failing to make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) are required to offer after-school tutoring in core subjects to low-income students, provided by public or private tutoring agencies. States are responsible for implementing, overseeing, and evaluating the SES programs; currently, several states and large local school districts have performed evaluations, with many more in the process of publishing results from statewide SES studies. Although state …

The Impact Of Dual Enrollment Participation On Degree Attainment, Peggy Anne Westcott Jan 2009

The Impact Of Dual Enrollment Participation On Degree Attainment, Peggy Anne Westcott

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations

Dual enrollment programs continue to grow in the United States; however, little empirical research examines the relationship between this high school experience and future college success and degree attainment. This study examines degree attainment for first-time beginning students who began their postsecondary education at a Virginia Community College during the fall semester, 2002. It follows those students for six years across all institutions attended, comparing degree attainment for two identified groups; students with dual enrollment credit earned prior to fall 2002 (dual enrolled students) and students with no prior dual credit (traditional students). It explores the differences that exist between …

Selection Of Pressure Equation For Preliminary Planing Hull Design Using Modified Analytical Hierarchy Process, Pamela Sue Fergen Jan 2009

Selection Of Pressure Equation For Preliminary Planing Hull Design Using Modified Analytical Hierarchy Process, Pamela Sue Fergen

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In the early stages of design when data availability is limited, engineers often times rely upon experience and regression analysis to select the most suitable design equation among many competitive ones. This study presents an alternative that applies a modified Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) to select the most suitable design equation. The Analytical Hierarchy Process, a multi-criteria decision making method, has been utilized in the business and management world to collect and evaluate experts' opinions in order to arrive at a final decision. The Analytical Hierarchy Process employed here will treat each of the design equations as an expert and …

Analysis Of N-Linked Oligosaccharides Of Prostate-Specific Antigen And Prostatic Acid Phosphatase In Prostatic Fluids, Krista Yaudes White Jan 2009

Analysis Of N-Linked Oligosaccharides Of Prostate-Specific Antigen And Prostatic Acid Phosphatase In Prostatic Fluids, Krista Yaudes White

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Presently, prostate cancer is the most common cancer afflicting men in the United States, with serum PSA being the "gold standard" protein biomarker used in the clinic for detecting and diagnosing prostate cancer. Nonetheless, serum PSA levels can also be elevated in non-cancerous conditions as well, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Due to this overlap, many unnecessary biopsies and radical prostatectomies occur, leading to patient distress. Despite recent advances to clinical assays which consider other clinical parameters, there is still a great need for improved clinical detection methodologies for prostate cancer, including improved biomarkers. Therefore, this research project aims …

Neutron Structure Functions Measured With Spectator Tagging, Svyatoslav Tkachenko Jan 2009

Neutron Structure Functions Measured With Spectator Tagging, Svyatoslav Tkachenko

Physics Theses & Dissertations

We know much less about the neutron than the proton due to the absence of free neutron targets. Neutron information has to be extracted from data on nuclear targets like deuterium. This requires corrections for off-shell and binding effects which are not known from first principles and therefore are model-dependent. As a consequence, the same data can be interpreted in different ways, leading to different conclusions about important questions such as the value of the d/u quark ratio at large momentum fraction x. The Barely Off-shell NUcleon Structure (BONUS) experiment at Jefferson Lab addressed this problem by tagging spectator protons …

From Banners To Youtube: Using The Rear-View Mirror To Look At The Future Of Internet Advertising, Susan Barnes, Neil Hair Jan 2009

From Banners To Youtube: Using The Rear-View Mirror To Look At The Future Of Internet Advertising, Susan Barnes, Neil Hair

Articles

In twelve short years, Internet advertising has evolved from banners to experiential promotions. In the beginning advertisers viewed the Internet in similar ways as they considered traditional media (television, newspaper, magazines). The idea of using a new medium like an older one, was described by McLuhan's concept of the rear view mirror. This article describes the history of Internet advertising from 1994 to 2006 by looking back to understand the future direction of Internet advertising.

The Gendering Of Vulnerability And Protection Needs: Iraqi Male Refugees, Karin Fernandez Jan 2009

The Gendering Of Vulnerability And Protection Needs: Iraqi Male Refugees, Karin Fernandez

Theses and Dissertations

Refugees pass through various stages from preflight, flight to post flight. It is argued that refugees as a whole - regardless of gender, race or ethnicity - should be considered vulnerable due to their actual or fear of persecution, but this is not always the case. This thesis looks at the ways in which the interpretation of “vulnerability” in the principles and practice of humanitarian aid in the refugee regime is affecting male Iraqi refugees seeking protection, resettlement and rehabilitation. As part of the evidence for this argument, the thesis examines gender differentials in the death rates and levels of …

Efforts to reshape the life opportunities for working families in America face a critical juncture in 2009 and beyond, involving both new opportunities and new challenges. This critical juncture arises due to two recent changes. First, 2008 brought important changes in national political dynamics as a result of the economic meltdown and the election of President Barack Obama and a new Congress. Second, internal dynamics within community organizing efforts in poor, working-class and middle-class communities have changed, with significant progress made over the last decade in re-engaging working families in the political process. This report uses the recent experience of …

Taming Prophetic Religion? Faith-Based Activism And Welfare Provision, Richard L. Wood Jan 2009

Taming Prophetic Religion? Faith-Based Activism And Welfare Provision, Richard L. Wood

Sociology Faculty and Staff Publications

This article examines the current debate in the United States (primarily) and Britain regarding government-funded social service provision via faith-based institutions. By highlighting the tension between the priestly' and 'prophetic' roles of public religion, it argues for the critical importance of protecting religion's prophetic role even as society moves toward more extensive public financing of priestly social service provision. The article first outlines contemporary prophetic religion in the United States, especially faith-based community organizing (also known as broad-based community organizing) efforts, emphasizing three facets of the field: its scale, its role in building social capital, the issues it has addressed. …
