A Realization And Application Of Appropriate French Baroque Ornamentation For The First Four Preludes Of “L'Art De Toucher Le Clavecin” By Francois Couperin, Andres Javier Lopez
A Realization And Application Of Appropriate French Baroque Ornamentation For The First Four Preludes Of “L'Art De Toucher Le Clavecin” By Francois Couperin, Andres Javier Lopez
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
In his work, L’Art de Toucher le Clavecin (1716-1717), Francois Couperin (1668-1733) details specific instructions for the correct playing of his ornamentation. In addition to the text, Couperin composes a series of didactic preludes in ascending order of difficulty to illustrate his ornamentation in the context of his work. I will focus on the proper interpretation of Couperin’s ornamentation and include a realization of four Couperin preludes. They contain the majority of issues presented by his ornamentation. I shall seek to properly realize Couperin’s ornamentation and use of unequal rhythms using the first four preludes of L’Art de Toucher le …
Rhetorics Of Fear, Deployment Of Identity, And Metal Music Cultures, Gregory Vance Smith
Rhetorics Of Fear, Deployment Of Identity, And Metal Music Cultures, Gregory Vance Smith
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to analyze the rhetorics of fear operating in public discourses surrounding metal music. This analysis focuses on how the public rhetorics deploy identity on listener populations through both the mediation and legislation of identities. Specifically, this mediation takes place using both symbols of fear and arguments constructed on potential threats. Texts for analysis in this study include film and television documentaries, newspaper articles, book-length critiques of and scholarship on heavy metal, and transcripts from the U.S. Senate Hearings on Record Labeling.
"Heavy metal" and "metal music" are labels that categorize diverse styles of music. …

Ron’S Right Arm: Tactility, Visualization, And The Synesthesia Of Audio Engineering, Eliot Bates
Ron’S Right Arm: Tactility, Visualization, And The Synesthesia Of Audio Engineering, Eliot Bates
Publications and Research
Most scholarship on audio engineering analyzes practices and practitioners in terms of musical and technical knowledges. The few references to sensory perception typically center on critical listening practices (“golden ears” engineers), audiophilia, and technologies of audition. However, particularly in light of computer-based workflows, the practice of audio engineering features carefully developed synesthesias of critical listening, visualization of digital audio, and tactile manipulations of interfaces, which can’t adequately be explained as cognitive processes or as conscious knowledge.
I draw on literature in the emerging field of sensory scholarship, in particular Brian Massumi’s theorization of synesthesia and affect and Charles Hirschkind’s analyses …
Music In Its Social Context: Fiji In A Microcosm, Alexander Greene
Music In Its Social Context: Fiji In A Microcosm, Alexander Greene
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The music of Fiji flows throughout the country as rich as the food and as omnipresent as the kava. Music touches all aspects of the Fijian way of life. Whether one is Indo-Fijian, Indigenous Fijian, from another pacific island, kylomo, or a kavailagi, there is no escaping music while in Fiji. This paper looks to explore the different social settings and context that music is created and then in turn listened to, and how the social setting of Fiji has shaped what music is created here. This paper also attempts to gather in a cohesive manner, what music is being …

Inconvenient Truths, And Changes To Believe In: Foreword To The Forum, Jeannie Ma. Guerrero
Gamut: Online Journal of the Music Theory Society of the Mid-Atlantic
This is a foreword to four papers that originated in the special session, “Ethnic Diversity in Music Theory: Voices from the Field,” at the November 2007 meeting of the Society for Music Theory (Baltimore). Inspired by the impassioned discussion period following the talks, the Committee on Diversity arranged to publish these papers to capture the session’s energy and channel it into a more permanent medium. This foreword, written by the moderator, highlights several issues that surfaced in the papers and in the ensuing discussion. The issues coalesce into a call for new action: diversity efforts have not worked in the …

Diversifying Music Theory, Youyoung Kang
Gamut: Online Journal of the Music Theory Society of the Mid-Atlantic
This article is part of a special forum titled “Ethnic Diversity in Music Theory: Voices from the Field.” It begins with a narrative description of the author’s qualifying exam in tonal analysis for the Ph.D. program in music theory at Yale University. During the exam, which he failed, the author produced a hermeneutic interpretation of Brahms’s song “Der Gang zum Liebchen,” op. 48/1. The author then uses this experience as a point of departure from which to reflect upon issues of racial/ethnic diversity within Anglo-American music theory. Navigating between racial essentialism and race-blind universalism, the author offers critiques of statements …

Nine Venezuelan Composers And A Catalogue Of Their Choral Works, Cristian Grases
Nine Venezuelan Composers And A Catalogue Of Their Choral Works, Cristian Grases
Open Access Dissertations
This document represents an initial endeavor in a long-lasting aspiration to pursue the study and collection of Latin American choral literature. This essay compiles the most complete and current catalogue possible of choral works written by nine Venezuelan composers born in the twentieth century and presents it in a simple and accessible format so it can be used by a variety of school teachers, choral conductors, church musicians, college directors, and professional musicians. Each composer entry presents a brief biographical note and a list of works organized in alphabetical order. The annotation for each composition includes information in eighteen categories. …

The Contributions Of Axel Jørgensen To The Solo Trombone Repertoire Of Denmark In The Twentieth Century, Andrew H. Converse
The Contributions Of Axel Jørgensen To The Solo Trombone Repertoire Of Denmark In The Twentieth Century, Andrew H. Converse
Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances
Axel Jørgensen is one of a few Danish composers who has contributed compositions to the solo trombone repertoire that gained an international and lasting reputation in the twentieth century. Jørgensen, like many Danish composers from the first part of the twentieth century, is often overlooked due to the imposing figure of Carl Nielsen. Jørgensen’s compositions, while not overly patriotic, give the trombonist a sense of the Danish Nationalistic Romantic style of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.
Jørgensen was one of the first composers to write for the emerging slide trombone idiom in Denmark at the beginning of the …
