Automatic Exposure Control And Estimation Of Effective System Noise In Diffuse Fluorescence Tomography, Dax L. Kepshire, Hamid Dehghani, Frederic Leblond, Brian W. Pogue Dec 2009

Automatic Exposure Control And Estimation Of Effective System Noise In Diffuse Fluorescence Tomography, Dax L. Kepshire, Hamid Dehghani, Frederic Leblond, Brian W. Pogue

Dartmouth Scholarship

A diffuse fluorescence tomography system, based upon time-correlated single photon counting, is presented with an automated algorithm to allow dynamic range variation through exposure control. This automated exposure control allows the upper and lower detection levels of fluorophore to be extended by an order of magnitude beyond the previously published performance and benefits in a slight decrease in system effective noise. The effective noise level is used as a metric to characterize the system performance, integrating both model-mismatch and calibration bias errors into a single parameter. This effective error is near 7% of the reconstructed fluorescent yield value, when imaging …

Automated Methods For Fiber Diameter Measurement Of Fibrous Scaffolds, Anna Bulysheva Dec 2009

Automated Methods For Fiber Diameter Measurement Of Fibrous Scaffolds, Anna Bulysheva

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this work was to develop an automated method of measuring fiber diameters of electrospun scaffolds from scanning electron microscopy images of these scaffolds. Several automated methods were developed and evaluated by comparison to known values and data obtained via the standard manual method. Simulated images with known diameters were used as test images to evaluate the accuracy of each measurement technique. Eight scanning electron microscopy images were also used for the evaluation of the automated methods compared to the standard manual method. All diameter measurements were made in pixels. Five new automated methods coded in MATLAB were …

Noninvasive Estimation Of Pulmonary Artery Pressure Using Heart Sound Analysis, Aaron W. Dennis Dec 2009

Noninvasive Estimation Of Pulmonary Artery Pressure Using Heart Sound Analysis, Aaron W. Dennis

Theses and Dissertations

Right-heart catheterization is the most accurate method for estimating pulmonary artery pressure (PAP). Because it is an invasive procedure it is expensive, exposes patients to the risk of infection, and is not suited for long-term monitoring situations. Medical researchers have shown that PAP influences the characteristics of heart sounds. This suggests that heart sound analysis is a potential noninvasive solution to the PAP estimation problem. This thesis describes the development of a prototype system, called PAPEr, which estimates PAP noninvasively using heart sound analysis. PAPEr uses patient data with machine learning algorithms to build models of how PAP affects heart …

Unified Database Interface, Ravikumar Police

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

Now days every organization uses SQL plus tool to write SQL commands in oracle database or in some other databases. As an industry norms database must be under control of database administrator, which means no other user can access the database but sometimes organization will give permissions to all users in that organization to access the database for some projects and also organization has to give permissions for their clients to access database but sometimes manually it is not possible. To avoid these types of problems UNIFIED DATABASE INTERFACE was introduced. UNIFIED DAT ABASE INTERFACE is an industry-standard tool for …

Optical Properties Of Semiconducting Boron Carbide For Neutron Detection Applications, Ravi B. Billa Dec 2009

Optical Properties Of Semiconducting Boron Carbide For Neutron Detection Applications, Ravi B. Billa

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Solid state neutron detection devices based on semiconducting boron carbide have the potential for nearly ideal neutron detection effciency for thermal neutrons. The present work is focused on characterizing optical properties of this semiconducting boron carbide material as a step in further development of the material for neutron detection and other applications.

Semiconducting boron carbide films were grown on silicon substrates using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition and their optical properties were characterized using variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry over a wide spectral range, from mid-infrared to vacuum-ultraviolet wavelengths. The effects of deposition substrate temperature and of post-deposition heat treatments on …

Fused Visible And Infrared Video For Use In Wilderness Search And Rescue, Dennis Eggett, Michael A. Goodrich, Bryan S. Morse, Nathan Rasmussen

Faculty Publications

Mini Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (mUAVs) have the potential to assist Wilderness Search and Rescue groups by providing a bird’s eye view of the search area. This paper proposes a method for augmenting visible-spectrum searching with infrared sensing in order to make use of thermal search clues. It details a method for combining the color and heat information from these two modalities into a single fused display to reduce needed screen space for remote field use. To align the video frames for fusion, a method for simultaneously pre-calibrating the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters of the cameras and their mount using a …

Slow Isoinertial Cervical Strength Training Does Not Alter Dynamic Stabilization Of The Head And Neck During A Standard Football Tackle, Peter J. Lisman Dec 2009

Slow Isoinertial Cervical Strength Training Does Not Alter Dynamic Stabilization Of The Head And Neck During A Standard Football Tackle, Peter J. Lisman

Open Access Dissertations

The sternocleidomastoid (SCM) and upper trapezius (UT) muscles are the primary dynamic stabilizers of the head and neck and likely attenuate head acceleration with direct and indirect impacts. Increasing the strength of the SCM and UT through cervical resistance training has been recommended to prevent concussions in football players. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of an eight-week isoinertial cervical resistance training program on SCM and UT muscle activity (EMG) and kinematic responses of the head and neck during a standard football tackle in college-aged males. Sixteen college-aged males (21.6 ± 2.8 y, 94.6 ± 13.3 …

Seeing It, Knowing It, Elizabeth M. Glazer Dec 2009

Seeing It, Knowing It, Elizabeth M. Glazer

NULR Online

In When Obscenity Discriminates, I argued that the First Amendment’s obscenity doctrine has generated discriminatory collateral effects against gays and lesbians, and that those collateral effects generate a need to refine the obscenity doctrine in light of the Supreme Court’s decision in Lawrence v. Texas. In his response, If Obscenity Were to Discriminate, Professor Barry McDonald agrees with my essay’s “core insight—that the Miller obscenity test should be applied in a manner that is neutral as to the sexual orientation of the pertinent actors,” and notes that this insight “appears to have substantial support in basic principles …

Temporal Awareness And Rhythmic Performance, Daniel J. Colombo Dec 2009

Temporal Awareness And Rhythmic Performance, Daniel J. Colombo

Theses

The objective of this research was to study the conditions under which rhythmic behavior arises and its effects on task performance and mental workload. It has been demonstrated that temporal awareness (TA) in dynamic systems draws on high-level mental resources and contributes to superior performance on some task elements but not others. Elsewhere it has been demonstrated that TA in environments with high predictability can lead to superior task performance and reduced mental workload. This research sought to examine the behavior and subsequent performance that arises under highly predictable vs. dynamic conditions. Using a computer-based time-sharing task, we analyzed task …

Efficient Implementation Of Raid-6 Encoding And Decoding On A Field Programmable Gate Array (Fpga), David Jacob Dec 2009

Efficient Implementation Of Raid-6 Encoding And Decoding On A Field Programmable Gate Array (Fpga), David Jacob

Theses and Dissertations

RAID-6 is a data encoding scheme used to provide single drive error detection and dual drive error correction for data redundancy on an array of disks. Here we present a thorough study of efficient implementations of RAID-6 on field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). Since RAID-6 relies heavily on Galois Field Algebra (GFA), an efficient implementation of a GFA FPGA library is also presented. Through rigorous performance analysis, this work shows the most efficient ways to tradeoff FPGA resources and execution time when implementing GFA functions as well as RAID-6 encoding and decoding.
