The Blog Election: An Analysis Of The Source Interaction Between Traditional News Media And Blogs In Their Coverage Of The 2006 Congressional Midterm Elections, Marcus Messner

Open Access Dissertations

Political blogs have emerged as a new journalistic format that has gained influence on the political discourse in the United States. Previous research has shown that this influence stems mainly from attention given to blogs by traditional news media. Based on the concepts of intermedia agenda setting and agenda building, this study explored the source interaction between 10 elite traditional news media and 10 political filter blogs during the 2006 Congressional Midterm Elections. An analysis of 2587 sources used in the election context found that traditional news media frequently cited blogs in their election coverage, but that the source attributions …

Comparison Of Single-Use And Multiple-Use Electrodes For Sensory, Motor Threshold Amplitudes And Force Production, Lucia Maloy Dec 2009

Comparison Of Single-Use And Multiple-Use Electrodes For Sensory, Motor Threshold Amplitudes And Force Production, Lucia Maloy

Theses and Dissertations

Context: Electrodes play an important role in interfacing tissue with electrical stimulation devices. Manufacturers recommend that adhesive metallic mesh cloth electrodes be used no more than 10 times before they are discarded, however, clinically the electrodes are often used up to 30 times. Another concern is sanitation. When electrodes are used on different patients, there is a chance for cross-contamination and bacterial growth on the electrode. Objective: To compare amplitudes of perceived sensation, motor twitch and force produced at specific amplitudes using single-use electrodes that run no risk of cross-contamination, and multiple-use electrodes. Design: Mixed model ANOVA with the subject …

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Offshore wind power is an increasingly viable resource that is being considered by many coastal States in the U.S for development. This thesis provides a recommendation concerning the foundations that will be needed for the construction of offshore wind farms off the coast of Virginia. To accomplish this I reviewed current and prototype underwater foundation technologies in order to establish viable options for developers to use. I was also able to analyze a case study that conducted “an analysis and survey of the experiences and lessons learned by developers of offshore wind farms” in Europe. Scalable Multi-Core Model Checking Fairness Enhanced Systems, Yang Liu, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong Dec 2009

Scalable Multi-Core Model Checking Fairness Enhanced Systems, Yang Liu, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Rapid development in hardware industry has brought the prevalence of multi-core systems with shared-memory, which enabled the speedup of various tasks by using parallel algorithms. The Linear Temporal Logic (LTL) model checking problem is one of the difficult problems to be parallelized or scaled up to multi-core. In this work, we propose an on-the-fly parallel model checking algorithm based on the Tarjan’s strongly connected components (SCC) detection algorithm. The approach can be applied to general LTL model checking or with different fairness assumptions. Further, it is orthogonal to state space reduction techniques like partial order reduction. We enhance our PAT …

Secure Ad Hoc Routing Protocols With Detection, Identification And Self-Healing Capabilities, Sivakumar Ayeegoundanpalayam Kulasekaran Dec 2009

Secure Ad Hoc Routing Protocols With Detection, Identification And Self-Healing Capabilities, Sivakumar Ayeegoundanpalayam Kulasekaran

Theses and Dissertations

Devices taking part in mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) co-operate with each other to route packets by strictly adhering to the ad hoc routing protocol in use. Malicious nodes taking part in co-operative routing can launch a wide variety of attacks to reduce the utility of MANETs. The aim of secure routing protocols is to ensure that MANETs can continue to function even in the face of malicious nodes. Secure routing protocols should have measures to dissuade attackers by detecting inconsistencies, identifying the perpetrator responsible for the inconsistency, and provide means to inhibit the role of misbehaving nodes. Most existing …

Decision-Based Data Fusion Of Complementary Features For The Early Diagnosis Of Alzheimer's Disease, Metin Ahiskali Dec 2009

Decision-Based Data Fusion Of Complementary Features For The Early Diagnosis Of Alzheimer's Disease, Metin Ahiskali

Theses and Dissertations

As the average life expectancy increases, particularly in developing countries, the prevalence of Alzheimer's disease (AD), which is the most common form of dementia worldwide, has increased dramatically. As there is no cure to stop or reverse the effects of AD, the early diagnosis and detection is of utmost concern. Recent pharmacological advances have shown the ability to slow the progression of AD; however, the efficacy of these treatments is dependent on the ability to detect the disease at the earliest stage possible. Many patients are limited to small community clinics, by geographic and/or financial constraints. Making diagnosis possible at …

The Effects Of Switching Impulses On The Partial Discharge Activity And Breakdown Voltage Of 15 Kv Xlpe And Epr Cables, Jacob C (Jacob Curtis) Fulper

Theses and Dissertations

A growing trend in the electrical industry is to move away from overhead lines and towards underground distribution. The cables necessary for underground distribution are stressed in various ways, and one of the most ignored stresses is that of overvoltage caused by switching. The focus of this research is to determine the effects that high voltage switching impulses have on the electrical strength of medium voltage cable insulation. Accelerated aging was performed on multiple samples of XLPE and EPR cables by applying multitudes of switching impulses. At various stages of the aging process, partial discharge measurements were taken. At the …

Saving Energy In Network Hosts With An Application Layer Proxy: Design And Evaluation Of New Methods That Utilize Improved Bloom Filters, Miguel Jimeno

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

One of the most urgent challenges of the 21st century is to investigate new technologies that can enable a transition towards a society with a reduced CO2 footprint. Information Technology generates about 2% of the global CO2, which is comparable to the aviation industry. Being connected to the Internet requires active participation in responding to protocol messages. Billions of dollars worth of electricity every year are used to keep network hosts fully powered-on at all times only for the purpose of maintaining network presence. Most network hosts are idle most of the time, thus presenting a huge …
