An Investigation Into Student Reactions Towards Rad Versus Traditional Programming Environments For Novice Developers, Pansy Colkers Jan 2009

An Investigation Into Student Reactions Towards Rad Versus Traditional Programming Environments For Novice Developers, Pansy Colkers

Theses : Honours

The traditional approach to programming using text editors is widely used in many institutions to teach introductory programming. These types of traditional programming environments provide fundamental programming concepts for learning, especially in the context of novice developers. In recent years, teaching institutions have seen a trend towards the introduction of visual "drag-and-drop" rapid application development (RAD) environments for teaching novice programmers. These 'environments capture student interest in programming by allowing the construction of workable programs within a short time frame based on minimal pre-existing coding knowledge. However, some have argued that these visual RAD environments might not be suitable for …

Making The Invisible, Visible : Exploring Liminality Of Mind And Body Through Glass, Naomi Hunter Jan 2009

Making The Invisible, Visible : Exploring Liminality Of Mind And Body Through Glass, Naomi Hunter

Theses : Honours

It is through the discipline of visual arts that I research the subject of the mind-body relationship and the notion of liminality- this is the space in-between. To that end, the aim of this research is to investigate and construct a visible means of exhibiting liminal space. This creative work will be used as a metaphor for the synergy between body and mind, which I contend occurs within an internal liminal space. I investigate these concepts through the double articulation of creative practice and a written exegesis, based on the following research questions: 'In what ways can glass be used …

Using Decision Analytic Modelling To Simulate Pregnancy, Jeffrey Cannon Jan 2009

Using Decision Analytic Modelling To Simulate Pregnancy, Jeffrey Cannon

Theses : Honours

Decision analytic modelling enables decision makers to assess the cost-effectiveness associated with a proposed change in a cunent system without physically implementing the changes. This can be achieved by formulating a mathematical model that represents all the major events occuning in the system through fmmulas and algorithms, and estimating the likely outcomes along with their costs. This type of modelling has been identified by the State Health Research Advisory Council (SHRAC) of the Western Australian Depmiment of Health as an asset for the plmming of health care investments in the future. One such area in which the Western Australian Department …

Quc-Tree: Integrating Query Context Information For Efficient Music Retrieval, Jialie Shen, Dacheng Tao, Xuelong Li Jan 2009

Quc-Tree: Integrating Query Context Information For Efficient Music Retrieval, Jialie Shen, Dacheng Tao, Xuelong Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we introduce a novel indexing scheme-query context tree (QUC-tree) to facilitate efficient query sensitive music search under different query contexts. Distinguished from the previous approaches, QUC-tree is a balanced multiway tree structure, where each level represents the data space at different dimensionality. Before the tree structure construction, principle component analysis (PCA) is applied for data analysis and transforming the raw composite features into a new feature space sorted by the importance of acoustic features. The PCA transformed data and reduced dimensions in the upper levels can alleviate suffering from dimensionality curse. To accurately mimic human perception, an …

SDRC Publications

For virtually all Filipinos, a college diploma symbolizes the attainment of a major life's goal, along with the hard work that led to its attainment, and the promise of professional success, financial stability, and personal stature.  Completion of a college education being a developmental milestone in actuality or from the perception of students and their families, it behooves human developmental specialists studying the transition from adolescence to adulthood to examine the Filipino college experience.  In particular, it is important to characterize, in the context of school experience, how Filipino youth develop the competencies and outlook for effectively recognizing and assuming …

A Framework For Temperature Imaging Using The Change In Backscattered Ultrasonic Signals, Yuzheng Guo Jan 2009

A Framework For Temperature Imaging Using The Change In Backscattered Ultrasonic Signals, Yuzheng Guo

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Hyperthermia is a cancer treatment that elevates tissue temperature to 40 to 43oC. It would benefit from a non-invasive, safe, inexpensive and convenient thermometry to monitor heating patterns. Ultrasound is a modality that meets these requirements. In our initial work, using both prediction and experimental data, we showed that the change in the backscattered energy: CBE) is a potential parameter for TI. CBE, however, was computed in a straightforward yet ad hoc manner. In this work, we developed and exploited a mathematical representation for our approach to TI to optimize temperature accuracy. Non-thermal effects of noise and motion confound the …

Factors Affecting Size And Swelling Of Poly(Ethylene Glycol) Hydrogel Microspheres Formed In Aqueous Sodium Sulfate Solutions, Michael Nichols Jan 2009

Factors Affecting Size And Swelling Of Poly(Ethylene Glycol) Hydrogel Microspheres Formed In Aqueous Sodium Sulfate Solutions, Michael Nichols

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The lower critical solution temperature: LCST) behavior of poly(ethylene glycol): PEG) in aqueous sodium sulfate solutions was exploited to fabricate hydrogel microspheres under mild conditions without the use of other monomers, polymers, surfactants or organic solvents. Reactive PEG derivatives underwent thermally induced phase separation to produce spherical PEG-rich domains that coarsened pending gelation, resulting in stable hydrogel microspheres that were polydisperse in size. The degree of reaction prior to phase separation, reaction rate within the PEG-rich domains, and duration of the reaction were independently varied to elucidate their effects on final microsphere size and gain insight regarding the mechanism of …

Improving Biocompatibility By Controlling Protein Adsorption: Modification And Design Of Biomaterials Using Poly(Ethylene Glycol) Microgels And Microspheres, Evan Scott

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Guided by the clinical needs of patients and developments in biology and materials science, the primary focus of the biomaterials field remains at the solid/liquid interface between biomaterial surfaces and biological fluids. For blood-contacting devices, biological responses are initially elicited and directed by proteins that adsorb from this multicomponent solution to form thin films on their surfaces. The identity, conformation, and quantity of adsorbed proteins are related to the properties of a material's surface. For example, hydrophobic surfaces tend to be thrombotic via interactions between platelets and adsorbed fibrinogen, while surface-activation of specific enzymes initiates the coagulation cascade on hydrophilic …

Investing In Culture: Underwater Cultural Heritage And International Investment Law, Valentina S. Vadi Jan 2009

Investing In Culture: Underwater Cultural Heritage And International Investment Law, Valentina S. Vadi

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

Underwater cultural heritage (UCH), which includes evidence of past cultures preserved in shipwrecks, enables the relevant epistemic communities to open a window to the unknown past and enrich their understanding of history. Recent technologies have allowed the recovery of more and more shipwrecks by private actors who often retrieve materials from shipwrecks to sell them. Not all salvors conduct proper scientific inquiry, conserve artifacts, and publish the results of the research; more often, much of the salvaged material is sold and its cultural capital dispersed. Because states rarely have adequate funds to recover ancient shipwrecks and manage this material, however, …

Multicast Encryption Infrastructure For Security In Sensor Networks, Richard R. Brooks, Brijesh Pillai, Matthew Pirretti, Michele C. Weigle Jan 2009

Multicast Encryption Infrastructure For Security In Sensor Networks, Richard R. Brooks, Brijesh Pillai, Matthew Pirretti, Michele C. Weigle

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Designing secure sensor networks is difficult. We propose an approach that uses multicast communications and requires fewer encryptions than pairwise communications. The network is partitioned into multicast regions; each region is managed by a sensor node chosen to act as a keyserver. The keyservers solicit nodes in their neighborhood to join the local multicast tree. The keyserver generates a binary tree of keys to maintain communication within the multicast region using a shared key. Our approach supports a distributed key agreement protocol that identifies the compromised keys and supports membership changes with minimum system overhead. We evaluate the overhead of …

The overall goal of the thesis was to develop tools to advance Investigations of stem cells in tissue engineering therapeutics for neurodegenerative disease and spinal cord injury. Two tools to characterize cell fate and a tool to separate a subset of neural cells were developed and evaluated. In the first study, a digital PCR technology, called polonies, was applied to measure mRNA from several key stem cell genes in small numbers of ES cells. Due to its properties, we hypothesized that polonies would be uniquely poised to profile stem cells. Polonies were counted for Oct3 in a sample of 10 …

Improving The Cathode Conditions By Pressurizing And Carbon Dioxide Addition To Enhance The Practicality Of Mfc Treatment Of Wastewater, Jeffrey Fornero Jan 2009

Improving The Cathode Conditions By Pressurizing And Carbon Dioxide Addition To Enhance The Practicality Of Mfc Treatment Of Wastewater, Jeffrey Fornero

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

An increasing global energy demand coupled with a more rigorous governmental regulatory environment: including identifying carbon dioxide as a pollutant) is becoming more and more incompatible with engineering practices that were developed in an era of lower energy costs and less regulation. It is, therefore, not a surprise that researchers are looking towards bioelectrochemical systems: BESs) as a potential superior technology to produce environmentally-benign and sustainable energy, replace energy intensive processes, and/or produce chemical products. The overall tenet of my thesis-based research was to understand the important mechanisms that limit the power output for BESs during wastewater treatment and to …

Oxygen-Enhanced Combustion: Theory And Applications, Scott Skeen Jan 2009

Oxygen-Enhanced Combustion: Theory And Applications, Scott Skeen

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

In the broadest sense, oxygen-enhanced combustion: OEC) refers to the use of oxygen to improve combustion and/or process characteristics. When a stream of oxygen is available, a wide range of flame configurations is possible. This work considers two specific configurations of OEC and is divided into two parts. In Part I, fundamental experimental and numerical flame studies explore the combustion of gaseous fuel/inert mixtures in oxygen-enriched air or pure oxygen under well-defined conditions. Part II targets a more practical application by considering the combustion of solid fuels in a variety of oxygen/carbon dioxide mixing scenarios. For gaseous non-premixed flames, combining …

Zeolites For Cleaner Processes: Alkylation Of Isobutane And N-Butene, Subramanya Nayak Jan 2009

Zeolites For Cleaner Processes: Alkylation Of Isobutane And N-Butene, Subramanya Nayak

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Large pore beta zeolite with straight and zig-zag channels and USY zeolite with super cages have shown potential to replace toxic and hazardous mineral acids as catalysts in alkylation processes. However, due to rapid deactivation of these zeolites, their acceptance in industrial alkylation has been delayed. In this study we seek a deeper understanding of the kinetics, transport, and sorption of organic molecules used in alkylation processes in nano-porous zeolites. A six lump kinetic model that considers the key reactions for the zeolite catalyzed alkylation process is presented. The influence of different reactions and rate limiting steps on catalyst, and …

Advances In Computational Solvation Thermodynamics, Matthew Wyczalkowski Jan 2009

Advances In Computational Solvation Thermodynamics, Matthew Wyczalkowski

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The aim of this thesis is to develop improved methods for calculating the free energy, entropy and enthalpy of solvation from molecular simulations. Solvation thermodynamics of model compounds provides quantitative measurements used to analyze the stability of protein conformations in aqueous milieus. Solvation free energies govern the favorability of the solvation process, while entropy and enthalpy decompositions give insight into the molecular mechanisms by which the process occurs. Computationally, a coupling parameter λ modulates solute-solvent interactions to simulate an insertion process, and multiple lengthy simulations at a fixed λ value are typically required for free energy calculations to converge; entropy …

The Association Between Bubble Trails And Folia: A Morphological And Sedimentary Indicator Of Hypogenic Speleogenesis By Degassing, Example From Adaouste Cave (Provence, France), Philippe Audra, Ludovic Mocochain, Jean-Yves Bigot, Jean-Claude Nobécourt Jan 2009

The Association Between Bubble Trails And Folia: A Morphological And Sedimentary Indicator Of Hypogenic Speleogenesis By Degassing, Example From Adaouste Cave (Provence, France), Philippe Audra, Ludovic Mocochain, Jean-Yves Bigot, Jean-Claude Nobécourt

International Journal of Speleology

Bubble trails are subaqueous features in carbonate caves, which are made by the corrosion of ascending carbon dioxide bubbles. Folia are calcite deposits resembling inverted rimstone dams in saturated pools. Based on morphological studies in Adaouste Cave (Provence, France) and on studies elsewhere in the world, we propose a new genetic model for folia, close to the model of Green (1991). The association of bubble trails and folia, occurring on overhanging walls, is interpreted to be an indicator of hypogenic degassing occurring just below the water table. The association is the result of juxtaposed processes composed of corrosion along bubble …
