Lichen Recovery Following Heavy Grazing By Reindeer Delayed By Climate Warming, David R. Klein, Martha Shulski Jan 2009

Lichen Recovery Following Heavy Grazing By Reindeer Delayed By Climate Warming, David R. Klein, Martha Shulski

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Introduced reindeer, Rangifer tarandus, over exploited lichen-rich plant communities on St. Matthew Island in the Bering Sea. A die-off of the reindeer followed, exacerbated by extreme weather in 1964, resulting in extirpation of the reindeer. A similar pattern of removal of lichens as major components of plant communities has occurred following introductions of reindeer to other islands at high latitudes. By 1985, two decades following die-off of the reindeer, total lichen biomass was only 6% of that in similar plant communities on adjacent Hall Island, not reached by the reindeer. By 2005, 41 y after the reindeer die-off, lichen …

Correlating Student Mathematics Diagnostic Testing And High School Mathematics Grades With Performance In The Fanshawe College Pre-Health Science Program, Susan Cluett, Julian Jarosh, Wendi Roscoe

Faculty and Staff Publications - CRI

A diagnostic mathematics test has been administered to incoming Fanshawe College Pre-Health Science (PHS) students for many years. A perception that this test was a good predictor of incoming students’ success in the PHS mathematics curriculum has traditionally been the basis for justifying the necessity of this test. In addition, the PHS program required students to have completed Grade 11 University, Grade 11 University/College, Grade 12 University or Grade 12 College level math upon completing high school. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between mathematics diagnostic test scores and final grades in all PHS courses, as well as overall …

United States: The Emergence Of Environmental Considerations, Sandra Zellmer Jan 2009

United States: The Emergence Of Environmental Considerations, Sandra Zellmer

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

This essay traces the emergence of environmental considerations in U.S. water law, beginning with colonial America and proceeding through the Gilded Age of industrialization, the Progressive Era of wise use, the New Deal and the rise of the federal administrative state, and the modern environmental era. Early on, environmental challenges were addressed haphazardly. The federal government influenced water policy through navigational enhancements, reclamation works, and flood control, while state and local law governed water rights and public health issues. The 1970s brought uniform federal effluent limitations and protections for endangered species. The dawn of the twenty-first century increasingly sees collaborative …

Developing Online Training Materials In Molecular Biology: Enhancing Hands-On Lab Skills., Rachel Boulay, Cynthia Anderson, Alex Parisky, Chris Campbell

Education Conference Papers

A well-accepted form of educational training offered in molecular biology is participation in active research laboratories. However, this approach to learning severely restricts access. Addressing this need, the University of Hawaii launched a project to expand this model to include newly developed online training materials in addition to a hands-on laboratory experience. This paper explores the process of material development and assessment plans. A pilot case study of a science teacher who embarks on learning molecular biology over a four-month period through online training materials and working side-by-side with medical researchers in a laboratory is described. Feedback suggested that the …

Host Density And Human Activities Mediate Increased Parasite Prevalence And Richness In Primates Threatened By Habitat Loss And Fragmentation, David N. M. Mbora, Mark A. Mcpeek Jan 2009

Host Density And Human Activities Mediate Increased Parasite Prevalence And Richness In Primates Threatened By Habitat Loss And Fragmentation, David N. M. Mbora, Mark A. Mcpeek

Biology

1. Habitat loss and fragmentation are the principal causes of the loss of biological diversity. In addition, parasitic diseases are an emerging threat to many animals. Nevertheless, relatively few studies have tested how habitat loss and fragmentation influence the prevalence and richness of parasites in animals. 2. Several studies of nonhuman primates have shown that measures of human activity and forest fragmentation correlate with parasitism in primates. However, these studies have not tested for the ecological mechanism(s) by which human activities or forest fragmentation influence the prevalence and richness of parasites. 3. We tested the hypothesis that increased host density …

A Transcriptional Network Associated With Natural Variation In Drosophila Aggressive Behavior, Shannon Roulet Jan 2009

A Transcriptional Network Associated With Natural Variation In Drosophila Aggressive Behavior, Shannon Roulet

Psychiatry Publications

Background Aggressive behavior is an important component of fitness in most animals. Aggressive behavior is genetically complex, with natural variation attributable to multiple segregating loci with allelic effects that are sensitive to the physical and social environment. However, we know little about the genes and genetic networks affecting natural variation in aggressive behavior. Populations of Drosophila melanogaster harbor quantitative genetic variation in aggressive behavior, providing an excellent model system for dissecting the genetic basis of naturally occurring variation in aggression.

Results Correlating variation in transcript abundance with variation in complex trait phenotypes is a rapid method for identifying candidate genes. …

Proteomic And Network Analysis Characterize Stage-Specific Metabolism In Trypanosoma Cruzi, Seth B. Roberts, Jennifer L. Robichaux, Arvind K. Chavali, Patricio A. Manque, Vladimir Lee, Ana M. Laura, Jason A. Papin, Gregory A. Buck

Study of Biological Complexity Publications

Trypanosoma cruzi is a Kinetoplastid parasite of humans and is the cause of Chagas disease, a potentially lethal condition affecting the cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems of the human host. Constraint-based modeling has emerged in the last decade as a useful approach to integrating genomic and other high-throughput data sets with more traditional, experimental data acquired through decades of research and published in the literature.

Preparation And Characterization Of Protein-Nanotube Conjugates, Jonathan S. Dordick, Dhiral A. Shah, Ravindra C. Pangule, Shyam Sundhar Bale, Prashanth Asuri, Amit Joshi, Akhilesh Banerjee, David Vance, Ravi S. Kane

Bioengineering

This chapter describes methods of immobilizing proteins on carbon nanotubes, using two different routes—physical adsorption and covalent attachment. We also provide an overview on how such conjugates can be characterized with the help of various techniques, such as Raman, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), circular dichroism (CD), and fluorescence spectroscopies, in addition to the standard enzyme kinetic analyses of activity and stability. Both the attachment routes—covalent and noncovalent—could be used to prepare protein conjugates that retained a significant fraction of their native structure and function; furthermore, the protein conjugates were operationally stable, reusable, and functional even under harsh denaturing conditions. These …

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Callipyge sheep exhibit extreme postnatal muscle hypertrophy in the loin and hindquarters as a result of a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the imprinted DLK1-DIO3 domain on ovine chromosome 18. The callipyge SNP up-regulates the expression of surrounding transcripts when inherited in cis without altering their allele-specific imprinting status. The callipyge phenotype exhibits polar overdominant inheritance since only paternal heterozygous animals have muscle hypertrophy. Two studies were conducted profiling gene expression in lamb muscles to determine the down-stream effects of over-expression of paternal allele-specific DLK1 and RTL1 as well as maternal allele-specific MEG3, RTL1AS and MEG8, using Affymetrix bovine expression …

Toward A Theory Of Morality: An Empirical Study Of Cognitive Moral Development In Market Channel Dyads In The Construction Industry Using The Defining Issues Test, James Nicholas Reischl Jan 2009

Toward A Theory Of Morality: An Empirical Study Of Cognitive Moral Development In Market Channel Dyads In The Construction Industry Using The Defining Issues Test, James Nicholas Reischl

HCBE Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation tackles the ageless human debate of the body versus the soul. Based on Kohlbergian theory, the multidisciplinary literature review advances the proposition that moral development proceeds in waves of referential egoism leading to nonreferential altruism that is couched in power--the apple of the eye.

Many inter organizational studies using the Defining Issues Test have compared moral maturity levels coming from various academic backgrounds. Previous studies have purported that education is the chief moderating variable for moral maturity, with little regard for paradigmatic bases of power. Yet, in this study noncoercive power is carefully controlled because of the highly …
