Internet-Based Surveys And Urban Design Education: A Community Outreach Graduate Project In Redding, Ca, Vincente Del Rio, Daniel Levi
City and Regional Planning
This paper is a contribution to the discussion on how to incorporate community participation into the urban design process within a pedagogical context. It is based on an outreach project by a class in the city planning graduate program at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. The project included an Internet survey to gather community input for a contentious riverfront site in Redding, CA. The responses permitted a study of perceptions, attitudes and expectations about the city and the project area, and an examination of design alternatives. The Internet survey provided 864 responses and generated a rich amount of …

Revision Of The Genus Chalcasthenes Arrow (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Dynastinae: Oryctoderini) From The Solomon Islands, Mary Liz Jameson, Brett C. Ratcliffe
University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers
Abstract The genus Chalcasthenes Arrow (Dynastinae: Oryctoderini), a scarab beetle genus endemic to the Solomon Islands, is reviewed. Based on examination of type specimens, the genus Strehlia Frey (Rutelinae: Rutelini: Parastasiina) is a new junior synonym of Chalcasthenes. The historical classification of these genera (either in the subfamily Dynastinae or Rutelinae) and character-based criteria for assigning the taxa to the Dynastinae are provided. We discuss character states that support the monophyly of members of the genus Chalcasthenes, comment on the distribution and biogeography of species in the genus and provide a key to species. The genus includes four …

Mattel's Barbie doll is more than just a trademarked toy produced for child consumption-Barbie has entered public discourse and taken on a life of her own as a cultural phenomenon. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has referred to Mattel's Barbie doll as "possibly the most famous toy in history." With this popularity, also comes unwanted attention. She has become an American icon and taken on additional meanings and status at a societal level; attracting the attention of artists, writers, academics, and commentators in a way that is beyond the scope of Mattel's trademark property rights. The tension between Mattel's …

Natural History Of Coastal Peruvian Solifuges With A Redescription Of Chinchippus Peruvianus And An Additional New Species (Arachnida, Solifugae, Ammotrechidae), Alessandro Catenazzi, Jack O. Brookhart, Paula E. Cushing
Publications
Two species of Chinchippus (Ammotrechidae) were studied in central Peru. Both species are endemic to the hyper-arid coastal desert and appear to derive most of their energy and nutrients from maritime prey, such as intertidal amphipods feeding on beach-cast algae or as arthropod scavengers feeding upon seabird and pinniped carcasses. Data on the spatial distribution of the two species were obtained from analyzing stomach contents of one common predator, the gecko Phyllodactylus angustidigitus, and suggest that both species are more abundant in insular than in mainland habitats. We redescribe Chinchippus peruvianus Chamberlin 1920, known only from a female specimen …

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are single base pair mutations that provide new approaches to studies of allele transcript abundances. High-resolution DNA melting curve (HRM) analysis using a LightScanner (Hi-Res Melting system with Idaho's LC Green) provides post-PCR detection of mutations and SNPs in genomic DNA. This study investigated whether the HRM analysis can distinguish alleles among potato (Solanum tuberosum) transcript abundances. Transcript properties of genes encoding seven carbohydrate metabolism enzymes/proteins in various tissues and cold storage durations were studied. The HRM assay measured differential expression of alleles between different organs, between different storage treatments and stages of tubers from the …

Multigeneic QTL present significant problems to analysis. Resistance to soybean (Glycine max (L) Merr.) sudden death syndrome (SDS) caused by Fusarium virguliforme was partly underlain by QRfs2 that was clustered with, or pleiotropic to, the multigeneic rhg1 locus providing resistance to soybean cyst nematode (SCN; Heterodera glycines ). A group of five genes were found between the two markers that delimited the Rfs2/rhg1 locus. One of the five genes was predicted to encode an unusual diphenol oxidase (laccase; EC 1.10.3.2). The aim of this study was to characterize this member of the soybean laccase gene-family and explore its involvement in …

In soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) combining resistance to cyst nematode (SCN; Heterodera glycines I.) with high seed yieldremains problematic. Molecular markers linked to quantitative trait loci (QTL) have not provided a solution. Sets of markers describing a collection of favorable alleles (linkats) may assist plant breeders seeking to combine both traits. The objective of this analysis was to identify linkats in genomic regions underlying seed yield and root SCN resistance QTL. Used were groups of cultivars selected from a single recombinant inbred (RIL) population derived from 'Essex' by 'Forrest' (ExF). The yield was measured at four locations. SCN resistance …

Mesohaline Submerged Aquatic Vegetation Survey Along The U.S. Gulf Of Mexico Coast, 2001 And 2002: A Salinity Gradient Approach, Joy H. Merino, Jacoby Carter, Sergio L. Merino
Gulf of Mexico Science
Distribution of marine submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV; i.e., seagrass) in the northern Gulf of Mexico coast has been documented, but there are nonmarine submersed or SAV species occurring in estuarine salinities that have not been extensively reported. We sampled 276 SAV beds along the gulf coast in Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas in 2001 and 2002 in oligohaline to polyhaline (0 to 36 parts per thousand) waters to determine estuarine SAV species distribution and identify mesohaline SAV communities. A total of 20 SAV and algal species was identified and habitat characteristics such as salinity, water depth, pH, conductivity, turbidity, …

Mesohaline Submerged Aquatic Vegetation Survey Along The U.S. Gulf Of Mexico Coast, 2000: A Stratified Random Approach, Jacoby Carter, Joy H. Merino, Sergio L. Merino
Gulf of Mexico Science
Estimates of submerged aquatic vegetative (SAV) along the U.S. Gulf of Mexico (Gulf) generally focus on seagrasses. In 2000, we attempted a synoptic survey of SAV in the mesohaline (5–20 ppt) zone of estuarine and nearshore areas of the northeastern Gulf. Areas with SAV were identified from existing aerial 1992 photography, and a literature review was used to select those areas that were likely to experience mesohaline conditions during the growing season. In 2000, a drought year, we visited 217 randomly selected SAV beds and collected data on species composition and environmental conditions. In general, sites were either clearly polyhaline …
The Effects Of Flooding On Four Common Louisiana Marsh Plants, Jenneke M. Visser, Elin R. Sandy
The Effects Of Flooding On Four Common Louisiana Marsh Plants, Jenneke M. Visser, Elin R. Sandy
Gulf of Mexico Science
The marshes of the Louisiana coastline have been deteriorating for decades as plants experience increasing levels of flooding. In this study, we determined the effects of flood duration on four of the most common marsh plants in Louisiana—Spartina alterniflora, Spartina patens, Panicum hemitomon, and Sagittaria lancifolia—by exposing them to different flooding regimes: 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100% of the time flooded. Cumulative plant height, soil redox, and soil pH were measured weekly. At the end of the experiment, above- and belowground biomass were measured. Redox measurements showed that the saturated soil (0% flooded) …
A New Sighting Network Adds To 20 Years Of Historical Data On Fringe West Indian Manatee (Trichechus Manatus) Populations In Alabama Waters, Claire M. Pabody, Ruth H. Carmichael, Lauren Rice, Monica Ross
A New Sighting Network Adds To 20 Years Of Historical Data On Fringe West Indian Manatee (Trichechus Manatus) Populations In Alabama Waters, Claire M. Pabody, Ruth H. Carmichael, Lauren Rice, Monica Ross
Gulf of Mexico Science
Recent findings suggest increased use of fringe habitats by the endangered West Indian manatee. To begin collecting fundamental data on population dynamics and ecology of fringe manatees in the northern Gulf of Mexico, we established the Mobile Manatees Sighting Network (MMSN), the first formal network to receive and track manatee sightings in Alabama waters. Comparison of MMSN data with compiled historical data indicated that West Indian manatees are regular seasonal visitors to Alabama waters. Historical (1985–2006) and newly collected data shared consistent distributions, seasonal patterns of abundance in sighting number, and group size frequencies. These data indicate that MMSN was …
A Land-Based Thalassia Testudinum Nursery Near Tampa Bay, Florida, Clinton J. Dawes, Michael Meads
A Land-Based Thalassia Testudinum Nursery Near Tampa Bay, Florida, Clinton J. Dawes, Michael Meads
Gulf of Mexico Science
An experimental, land-based seagrass nursery, built near Tampa Bay, FL, produced cultivars of Thalassia testudinum Banks and Solander ex König (turtle grass). The nursery was a rectangular basin measuring 6.1 X 12.2 m that graded from 1.5 to 2.0 m in depth constructed inside a fiberglass-covered pole building. The basin had a vinyl liner covered with 10–20 cm of sand and 1.0–1.3 m of water. The nursery ran for 26 mo and focused on producing cultivars of T. testudinum using differing planting techniques. Survival rates were 84% after 3–12 mo in the first planting and 91% after 4 mo in …
Seasonal Responses Of Phyloplankton Productivity To Water-Quality Variations In A Coastal Karst Ecosystem Of The Yucatan Peninsula, Israel Medina-Gómez, Jorge A. Herrera-Silveira
Seasonal Responses Of Phyloplankton Productivity To Water-Quality Variations In A Coastal Karst Ecosystem Of The Yucatan Peninsula, Israel Medina-Gómez, Jorge A. Herrera-Silveira
Gulf of Mexico Science
Dzilam Lagoon (DL) is a shallow, semienclosed, coastal ecosystem located on the north coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. With 9.4 km3 surface area, this system is influenced by groundwater (GD) supply and inorganic nutrients drained from the nearby mangrove. DL is highly preserved and provides a unique site to address the seasonal responses of phytoplankton production to environmental variability in a karstic and pristine scenario. Twelve monthly sampling trips were undertaken during Sep. 1998–Aug. 1999 to record in situ physicochemical parameters and collect water for inorganic nutrients, chlorophyll a (Chl a), and phytoplankton production at seven stations plus …

Age, Growth, Mortality, And Reproduction Of Roughtongue Bass, Pronotogrammus Martinicensis (Serranidae), In The Northeastern Gulf Of Mexico, Richard S. Mcbride, Kenneth J. Sulak, Paul E. Thurman, Adam K. Richardson
Gulf of Mexico Science
The inaccessibility of outer continental shelf reefs has made it difficult to investigate the biology of Pronotogrammus martinicensis, a small sea bass known to be numerous and widely distributed in such habitat. This study takes advantage of a series of cruises in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico that collected 1,485 individuals. Fish were collected over or in the vicinity of reef habitats with hook and line, otter trawl, and rotenone. We present a preliminary validation of an otolith ageing method and report that P. martinicensis reached a maximum size of 143 mm standard length (SL), grew to about 50% …
