The importance of lotic systems as sinks for nitrogen inputs is well recognized. A fraction of nitrogen in streamflow is removed to the atmosphere via denitrification with the remainder exported in streamflow as nitrogen loads. At the watershed scale, there is a keen interest in understanding the factors that control the fate of nitrogen throughout the stream channel network, with particular attention to the processes that deliver large nitrogen loads to sensitive coastal ecosystems. We use a dynamic stream transport model to assess biogeochemical (nitrate loadings, concentration, temperature) and hydrological (discharge, depth, velocity) effects on reach-scale denitrification and nitrate removal …

Opinion Mining With The Sentwordnet Lexical Resource, Bruno Ohana

Dissertations

Sentiment classification concerns the application of automatic methods for predicting the orientation of sentiment present on text documents. It is an important subject in opinion mining research, with applications on a number of areas including recommender and advertising systems, customer intelligence and information retrieval. SentiWordNet is a lexical resource of sentiment information for terms in the English language designed to assist in opinion mining tasks, where each term is associated with numerical scores for positive and negative sentiment information. A resource that makes term level sentiment information readily available could be of use in building more effective sentiment classification methods. …

Phylogeography And Conservation Of The Arroyo Toad (Bufo Californicus), Robert Edward Lovich Mar 2009

Phylogeography And Conservation Of The Arroyo Toad (Bufo Californicus), Robert Edward Lovich

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The Arroyo Toad (Bufo cakfomicus) is an endangered species found in rivers of southern California, USA and northern Baja California, Mexico. It has experienced population declines throughout its range, as a result of urbanization, hydrologic alterations, and overall habitat loss. As part of the Recovery Plan for this species, it was determined that more research was needed to assist in management decisions. One of those research needs was to better understand the intraspecific genetic variation within the Arroyo Toad. I conducted a range wide genetic study of the Arroyo Toad to uncover lineages and genetic variation among and between all …

Role Of No In The Regulation Of Cortisol Synthesis In Long-Term Hypoxic Sheep Fetal Adrenal, Tshepo Rothi Monau Mar 2009

Role Of No In The Regulation Of Cortisol Synthesis In Long-Term Hypoxic Sheep Fetal Adrenal, Tshepo Rothi Monau

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Our laboratory has demonstrated that sheep fetuses adapt to long-term hypoxia (LTH) by maintaining normal level of basal plasma cortisol despite increased adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). But the mechanisms involved are not fully understood. Studies have shown that nitric oxide (NO) inhibits synthesis of steroid hormones in a variety of tissues, and in different animal species. Studies also showed that hypoxia increases both expression and activity levels of the nitric oxide (NO) generating enzyme, nitric oxide synthase (NOS), in certain tissues. We have here investigated the expression level and localization of NOS isoforms in sheep fetal adrenals. We also investigated the …

Elevated Levels Of Nr2a And Psd-95 In The Lateral Amygdala In Depression, Beata Karolewicz, Katalin Szebeni, Tempestt Gilmore, Dorota Maciag, Craig A. Stockmeier, Gregory A. Ordway

ETSU Faculty Works

Compelling evidence suggests that major depression is associated with dysfunction of the brain glutamatergic transmission, and that the glutamatergic N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor plays a role in antidepressant activity. Recent post-mortem studies demonstrate that depression is associated with altered concentrations of proteins associated with NMDA receptor signalling in the brain. The present study investigated glutamate signalling proteins in the amygdala from depressed subjects, given strong evidence for amygdala pathology in depression. Lateral amygdala samples were obtained from 1314 pairs of age- sex-, and post-mortem-interval-matched depressed and psychiatrically healthy control subjects. Concentrations of NR1 and NR2A subunits of the NMDA receptor, as …

The Unexamined Life Is Not Worth Living . . . Or Is It? Preserving The Sanctity Of Human Life In American Courtrooms, Stephanie R. Fueger Mar 2009

The Unexamined Life Is Not Worth Living . . . Or Is It? Preserving The Sanctity Of Human Life In American Courtrooms, Stephanie R. Fueger

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

This Comment argues that the ways in which disparities between wrongful pregnancy and wrongful birth claims are handled by judges has set up a subconscious bias against those who are born with genetic, developmental or other defects. This article proposes that the current distinctions among such claims be abolished in favor of other alternatives that actually carry out the stated goals of the judges making these decisions: respect for all human life. To do so, judges must abolish the distinctions between wrongful life and wrongful pregnancy claims because they ignore the benefits disabled children bestow on their parents. These distinctions …

National Study On Carless And Special Needs Evacuation Planning: Case Studies, John L. Renne, Thomas W. Sanchez, Robet C. Peterson

Planning and Urban Studies Reports and Presentations

The National Study of Carless and Special Needs Evacuation Planning has constructed an essential outline for carless and special needs evacuation planning. This outline is built from planning efforts in each of the five case study cities. Each city had its strengths and weaknesses. In this study, we have combined the strengths from every city involved to build the criteria used to evaluate their planning efforts. In this sense, we have based our evaluations upon real planning efforts that can and are being done around the United States.

Historical Account Of The Two Family-Group Names In Use For The Single Accepted Family Comprising The "Fish Blood Flukes", Stephen A. Bullard, Kirsten Jensen, Robin M. Overstreet

Faculty Publications

The family-group name for the "fish blood flukes" is unstable, with both "Aporocotylidae Odhner, 1912" and "Sanguinicolidae von Graff, 1907 "in use for the single family. Although "Sanguinicolidae von Graff, 1907" (or "Graff, 1907") has been a widely-accepted family-group name for the fish blood flukes subsequent to Yamaguti's 1954 and 1958 synoptical publications ("Systema Helminthum"), a critical examination of the relevant literature, much of it published in German during 1900 through 1926, reveals that "Aporocotylidae Odhner, 1912" is the earliest available family-group name for these flukes. The name Aporocotylidae, moreover, was in wide usage by alpha taxonomists before 1954 and …

Exercise-And Hypoxia-Induced Anaerobic Metabolism And Recovery: A Student Laboratory Exercise Using Teleost Fish, Bernard Rees Mar 2009

Exercise-And Hypoxia-Induced Anaerobic Metabolism And Recovery: A Student Laboratory Exercise Using Teleost Fish, Bernard Rees

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Anaerobic metabolism is recruitedin vertebrates under conditions of intense exercise or lowered environmental oxygen availability (hypoxia), typically resulting in the accumulation of lactate in blood and tissues. Lactate will be cleared over time after the reoxygenation of tissues, eventually returning to control levels. Here, we present a laboratory exercise developed as part of an upper-level vertebrate physiology class that demonstrates the effects of exercise and hypoxia exposure on blood lactate in fish and the subsequent decrease in lactate during recovery. Typically, the results obtained by students demonstrate that both treatments cause significant increases in blood lactate concentrations (two to three …

The five-coordinate iron-dithiolate complex (N,N′-4,7-bis-(2′-methyl-2′-mercatopropyl)-1-thia-4,7-diazacyclononane)iron(III), [LFe]+, has been isolated as the triflate salt from reaction of the previously reported LFeCl with thallium triflate. Spectroscopic characterization confirms an S = 1/2 ground state in non-coordinating solvents with room temperature μeff = 1.78 μΒ and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) derived g-values of g1 = 2.04, g2 = 2.02 and g3 = 2.01. [LFe]+ binds a variety of coordinating solvents resulting in six-coordinate complexes [LFe-solvent]+. In acetonitrile the low-spin [LFe-NCMe]+ (g1 = 2.27, g2 = …

Elders With Diabetes: Implications For Depression Screening, Cynthia Clinkingbeard Mar 2009

Elders With Diabetes: Implications For Depression Screening, Cynthia Clinkingbeard

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Diabetes has been concluded to be a global epidemic (Wild, Sicree, Roger, King & Green, 2004). By the year 2030, it is predicted that depression will become the second leading cause of disability worldwide (World Health Organization [WHO], 2007). The relationship between diabetes and depression is likely not casual.

Those with diabetes are twice as likely to develop depression (Eaton, Armenian, Gallo, Pratt & Ford, 1996; Kawakami, Shimizu, Takatsuka, & Ishibashi, 1999). Conversely, diabetes doubles the likelihood of comorbid depression (Anderson, Clouse, Freedland & Lustman, 2001). The intersection of these two devastating diseases is far from benign. Black, Markides and …

This research also seeks to discover and examine the lived experiences, meaning and consequent changes made in the lives of the research participants. The focus of this research asks how and in what ways the learning process differs prior to and after a diagnosis of MS and how these individuals reconstruct their lives after experiencing the day-to-day challenges brought about by this disease. …

Water Scarcity, Conflict, And Security In A Climate Change World: Challenges And Opportunities For International Law And Policy, Gabriel Eckstein Mar 2009

Water Scarcity, Conflict, And Security In A Climate Change World: Challenges And Opportunities For International Law And Policy, Gabriel Eckstein

Faculty Scholarship

Although climate change is expected to have major consequences that affect the global environment in its broadest sense, one of the earliest and most direct impacts will be on Earth’s fresh water systems. While some regions will experience increased precipitation, others will suffer serious scarcity. Among others, consequences are likely to include severe flooding, extreme droughts, and meandering border-rivers. This, in turn, will affect human migration patterns, population growths, agricultural activities, economic development, and the environment. This article explores the impact that climate change will have on regional and global freshwater resources and the resulting legal and policy implications that …

Argument Structure Effects In Action Verb Naming In Static And Dynamic Conditions, Dirk B. Den Ouden, Steve Fix, Todd B. Parrish, Cynthia K. Thompson Mar 2009

Argument Structure Effects In Action Verb Naming In Static And Dynamic Conditions, Dirk B. Den Ouden, Steve Fix, Todd B. Parrish, Cynthia K. Thompson

Faculty Publications

Argument structure, as in the participant roles entailed within the lexical representation of verbs, affects verb processing. Recent neuroimaging studies show that when verbs are heard or read, the posterior temporoparietal region shows increased activation for verbs with greater versus lesser argument structure complexity, usually bilaterally. In addition, patients with agrammatic aphasia show verb production deficits, graded based on argument structure complexity. In the present study, we used fMRI to examine the neural correlates of verb production in overt action naming conditions. In addition, we tested the differential effects of naming when verbs were presented dynamically in video segments versus …

From Gene Mutation To Protein Characterization, David A. Moffet Mar 2009

From Gene Mutation To Protein Characterization, David A. Moffet

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Works

A seven-week “gene to protein” laboratory sequence is described for an undergraduate biochemistry laboratory course. Student pairs were given the task of introducing a point mutation of their choosing into the well studied protein, enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP). After conducting literature searches, each student group chose the mutation they wanted to introduce into EGFP. Students designed their sequence-specific mutagenic primers and constructed their desired mutation. The resulting EGFP mutant proteins were expressed in E. coli, purified and characterized. This laboratory sequence connected the major concepts of molecular biology and biochemistry, while incorporating the thrill of novel discovery in …

‘Sometimes The Meaning Of The Text Is Unclear’: Making ‘Sense’ Of The Scum Manifesto In A Contemporary Swedish Context, Katherine Harrison Mar 2009

‘Sometimes The Meaning Of The Text Is Unclear’: Making ‘Sense’ Of The Scum Manifesto In A Contemporary Swedish Context, Katherine Harrison

Journal of International Women's Studies

In 2003 the first Swedish translation of the well-known second-wave feminist manifesto, the SCUM Manifesto by Valerie Solanas, was published. Publication of this text became intricately involved with a number of other contemporary events in Sweden which pose questions about that country’s widely perceived status as one of the most “gender equal” in the world. In this paper, I use the text’s own challenging content, provocative language and complicated history as a way into exploring its disruptive effects on Swedish society. I ask how and why the text retains its power to provoke and challenge some forty years after its …

Chronic Toxicological Effects Of High Diluted Solutions Of Aveloz (Euphorbia Tirucalli L.) On Healthy Mice: A Preliminary Study, Marcia Varricchio, Cristiane Pereira, Fernanda Sales, Teresa Gomes, Elaine Daudt, Carolina Aquino, Gleyce Barbosa, Nelson Gomes, Alexandre Dos Santos Pyrrho

Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy

The latex extracted from Euphorbia tirucalli, a plant popularly known as Aveloz, is used in complementary medicine to induce tumor regression. However, as this latex has toxic effects when administered orally in ponderal doses, the present study was designed to assess the effects of high dilutions in healthy mice over a period of 18 weeks. The Aveloz latex-high diluted solutions (latex-HD) were obtained through the interaction of two processes: 1:100 dilution in mass and succussion, using ethanol 70% as a solvent, in the homeopathic dilutions of 5, 15 and 30cH, following Farmacopéia Homeopática Brasileira. Control solutions without latex were compounded …

U.S. Economic Growth In The Gilded Age, Alexander J. Field Mar 2009

U.S. Economic Growth In The Gilded Age, Alexander J. Field

Economics

In the immediate postwar period, Moses Abramovitz and Robert Solow both examined data on output and input growth from the first half of the twentieth century and reached similar conclusions. In the twentieth century, in contrast with the nineteenth, a much smaller fraction of real output growth could be swept back to the growth of inputs conventionally measured. The rise of the residual, they suggested, was an important distinguishing feature of twentieth century growth. This paper identifies two difficulties with this claim. First, TFP growth virtually disappeared in the U.S. between 1973 and 1995. Second, TFP growth was in fact …
